Mikey jumped up from the pew he was sitting on as his sister stormed into the sanctuary, looking angry. Persephone shook her head at him and looked out of a broken window at the sky. She frowned, realizing that she had lost some time. She sighed and flopped onto a pew, jumping slightly as her brother threw his arm around her. “What’s wrong, Persy?”
“Nothing, Mikey. Why would anything be wrong?” Her sarcasm made him flinch and she sighed. “I have to leave at dawn to get help with the vampire and demon problems here. That means I’m going to have to kill my oldest brother and one of my best friends from high school. Not to mention the fact that I spent five years getting over the death of the one person I ever truly loved and he’s walking around in the back of the church. Is that enough?”
Mikey sighed and kissed his sister on the forehead, shaking his head. “You know that Frank and I will fight with you, right? As much as we can anyway. Isn’t that right, Frank?”
“We’re behind you 100%, Persy. Do you need us to go with you to get help? Because if you do, we can.” There was a desperation to his voice that Persephone had never heard in him and she looked at Mikey, raising her eyebrow in inquiry.
“Would you, Mikey? We could get you some new clothes, seeing as both of you guys look like you’ve been rolling in dirt for years. Not to mention, I hate to travel alone unless I have to.” Mikey looked at Frank, glare in his eyes. There was something going on here that was making Persephone very uncomfortable. “What is the deal, guys? Someone spit it out.”
“They don’t know if they can leave Contract Valley. None of us do.” Bob walked around the corner, anger and hurt apparent on his face. At one point in time, it might have made her feel guilty, but not now. “I’ll fight with you if only to get the vampires and demons out of town.”
Persephone knew that one of the main reasons he was offering to fight was that he thought he had a chance back into her good graces. Maybe he did, but it wouldn’t be any time soon. She shook her head and looked back up at the sky through the window. “There’s only one way to see if you can leave Contract Valley. My car is park just on the outside of town. As soon as the sun comes up, we’ll walk toward it. If you can cross the county line, we’ll know you can leave.”
The three nodded in turn, apparently Mikey and Frank agreeing that Bob should come with them as well, and Persephone nodded, standing and walking out the front door and standing alone in front of the church steps. She had had so much thrown on her in less than twelve hours, she just needed a moment to collect herself.
She pulled her cell phone out of her pocket and looked to see if she had a signal. Nothing. Until she could get out of town, she was on her own. Mikey, Frank, and Bob were there, yes, but what good could they really be in a fight? Mikey and Frank seemed stronger in their animal forms, and Bob … well, Bob just appeared to be stronger. He might be helpful, might be.
She sat on the steps and popped the clip from a pistol, frowning at the lack of bullets she had. Three more in each gun and then one extra clip with thirteen rounds each. How could she have gone through over thirty rounds and not realized it? Closing her eyes, she started to count how many she had shot the night before. She knew she had fired some shots into the group, so that would account for it, but it still didn’t bode well.
She had sat there, eyes closed, thinking of all the ways she could have prevented the previous night’s activities, when she felt the warm glow of the sun hit her skin. She relished the warmth, knowing that it meant she could wander freely without fear of being attacked. But now she had to worry about the guys. She moved to head into the church, but, hearing the guys talk, she stopped to listen.
“She’s not the same, Bob. You have to understand what she had to go through.”
“I know that, but I don’t seem to hold any clout with her anymore. She at least seems to be ok with you.”
“I’m her brother. I didn’t die in her arms. Think about that a minute before you start going off again.”
“I understand that, but I did so many things to get back here to her, and she just doesn’t seem to care. She’s no longer the sweet girl I fell in love with all those years ago. Do you two not see it?”
“You might have come back to her, but you waited four years after coming back to even try to leave Contract Valley. I know, because Frank and I have been watching you for the last four years. Since you fell.”
“If you knew I was here, why didn’t you tell Persephone? Why did you let me give her the shock treatment?”
“I’m her BROTHER! It’s my job to fucking protect her. She was so torn up over your death that I didn’t want to see her go through that again. And if I were you, I would get the fuck out of my face before you lose yours.” Persephone heard her brother’s normally gentle voice lower several octaves and knew that things were about to go south. She moved to head inside but sighed as Frank spoke.
“Calm down, Mikey. He’s not worth it. We can’t leave with Persephone if you’re all furry. Take a few deep breaths.”
“What the fuck is his deal anyway?”
“His fucking deal is that he went to purgatory, we both did, to keep your wife alive! If you don’t fucking chill out and quit treating us like it was our fault she was shocked, I’m going to fucking blow you away.” Frank’s voice was lowered several decibels as his anger grew.
Persephone leaned against the door jam and waited to see what would happen next, knowing it could be nothing good. She had felt a jolt in her heart as Frank mentioned going to purgatory to save her. It would explain so many things, yet she didn’t want to think about how she had risked her brother’s life to live.
“Maybe you should let the fucking leopard boy shift on me, Frank. See who could win in that fight. Or maybe you show me what you’ve got. I’m sure I could show you a thing or two about real fighting.”
A pew moved, screeching across the floor and Persephone was moving into the room. She had a blade pulled and tossed before she had even cleared the door. It hit just between Bob and Frank, who turned to look at her. She had another blade drawn and shook her head. “The next two go between your eyes. Trust me, I don’t miss.”
Mikey seemed to be having a panic attack in the back of the church while Bob and Frank had gone at each other like rabid dogs. Persephone moved to her brother and put an arm around him, blade still at the ready just in case the other two tried anything. “Are you okay, Mikey? Need anything?”
Mikey shook his head. “I’m fine, Persy. Just a little, um, pissed.”
Persephone nodded and sheathed her blade, moving between the other two boys. She balled her hand into a fist and cold cocked both of them quicker than they could move. “You assholes. You think any of this matters to me. It doesn’t. When I get out of here, I’m taking Mikey and leaving with him. I’m going to leave Contract Valley and only come back to destroy the evil here. Nothing else. If you two want to leave with me, stop acting like children.”
She walked back over to Mikey and helped him up, walking beside him out the front door of the church, heading out of the church yard. Frank and Bob exchanged an angry glance, both in pain because of the punch she had given them, and followed behind.
Their presence was a constant in the back of Persephone’s mind as she walked, gun at the ready, down the streets. She could feel her brother off to her left, Frank in the back toward the right, and Bob bringing up the rear directly behind her. She had never hunted with others, so it was a little weird having people at her back, but they were almost to the end of town so she wouldn’t have to worry about it for long.
She stopped at the county line, where the general store was, and looked back at the boys as they seemed to hesitate. She crossed the line easily and turned back to them. Mikey, always being one of the bravest, or stupidest depending on the situation, came forward first. Jumping back slightly as he hit the line. “What the fuck was that?”
“Describe it to me, Mikey.”
“It was like ants all over my skin. Like they were ripping me apart from the inside out.”
“Frank, you try it.” Persephone had a prediction as to what was going on and only knew of one way to fix it, but she needed to know for sure.
Frank stepped up and jumped back also nodding. “Definitely ants.”
Bob moved up without even trying and stepped through the barrier with no problem. He looked at Persephone, eyebrows raised. “I don’t know why it let’s me out.”
“Because you died in Contract Valley but you’re a fallen and can move between the planes. These guys were sent to purgatory in Contract Valley and are stuck unless …” She pulled a blade out of a sheath and stepped back over the barrier, cutting her finger open. “Open your mouth, Mikey.”
“You don’t know what blood does to me, Persy. I wouldn’t do that if I was you.” Her brother backed away a few steps, but she knew what she had to do.
“Trust me, Mikey. Open your mouth.”
Her brother moved to protest and she stuck her finger in his mouth, causing him to gag a little as the blood touched his tongue. He swallowed the blood and his eyes went completely leopard, though that was soon gone. He frowned and looked down at his hand. “What the Hell? Normally when blood gets into my mouth, I shift.”
Persephone shrugged and shoved her brother over the line. He shook for a minute but then nothing. “Healing blood, remember? Doesn’t have the same affects as normal blood. Now, Frank, it’s your turn.”
She held her hand out and Frank, frowning, licked a single drop of the blood, flinching at the coppery taste. She watched as he tentatively stepped toward the line, shoving him when he looked like he was about to chicken out. He went over with ease, glaring at her. “That was uncalled for, Persy. Yeah well, you didn’t look like you were moving fast enough.”
She crossed the line, feeling a slight tingling she hadn’t felt before, and headed to her car, ignoring any ominous feelings she had. She slipped into the driver’s side door and was surprised at the order the boys got in. Bob ended up beside her, Frank behind her, and Mikey behind Bob. She wasn’t happy about the seating arrangements, but she had to get back to New Haven before noon to let those in her firm know about the major problem they were facing in Contract Valley. A problem made worse by the fact that she had been injured in the fight and her blood and been freely spilled. If they found out what it could do … she shuttered at the thought.
Bob noticed the shutter and frowned. “What’s wrong, Persephone?”
“I was injured back there. You saw what my blood can do, Bob. If they find out, we’re shit out of luck. I just can’t believe I was stupid enough to get hurt.”
“You weren’t stupid, Persy. You didn’t know how many of them there were. It wasn’t your fault. It was ours for not telling you before you left.” Persephone felt Mikey’s hand on her shoulder and laid her hand on top of it.
She gave it a squeeze and nodded. “There is no blame for this. I have some friends who are more than willing to help us if we can just get to them.”
She pulled onto the highway and pulled her cell phone out, dialing as soon as she realized there was a signal. She put the phone to her ear and begged for someone to answer. An obviously male voice came onto the phone and she sighed in relief. “Oh, Freddie, thank the gods! I thought no one was in the office. We have a problem. I need you to get everyone together at the office by 11. I should be there around that time. We’ll discuss it then.”
She hung up the phone and shoved down on the gas pedal, speeding past several police cars who turned on their sirens and became her police escort. The guys in the car with her were looking at her like she had sprouted an extra head, obviously confused as to how she had friends in the police line that would look past her speeding. She pulled to a screeching halt outside a large office building and turned the car off, hopping out, guys close behind her.
At the front door she turned and smiled at them. “Welcome to Seigneur De Mort Incorporated.” She opened the front door and was automatically greeted with calls of others with weapons visibly showing. She could see the shock on Bob, Mikey, and Frank’s faces as they thought of their shy little Persephone becoming a popular bounty hunter. It was a little weird for them.
She walked into the elevator with them, took it to the top floor, and slipped into a conference room large enough to hold hundreds of people, which it was doing presently. She walked up to the podium, guys staying by the door, and spoke into the mike. “We have a serious problem.”
