*Gerard’s POV*
As soon as I woke, I was in my chambers, watching Jade sleep. Her beauty will never cease to amaze me. It’s as if the gods themselves gave all of my desires human form in one vessel. There had been plenty of women that I’d loved, each with something I adored. But Jade was everything and, who knows, more.
She stirred and slowly opened her eyes. When she spied me, she tried to cover herself from my eyes. I can’t blame her for being paranoid; I’d heard the horrid stories of what mortal men did to their women.
“Did you sleep well?” I asked. She nodded and covered a yawn. “Are you hungry?” She nodded again and shivered. I pulled off my jacket and draped it around her shoulders. “I’m going to get you some food, I’ll be right back.” I tucked some hair behind her ear and left.
In the gathering place, I heaped a plate with pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs, and biscuits and gravy. A few women stopped me to ask about the mysterious girl who wore the queen star. I made it back to my chambers with the plateful of food and carried it in. I’d also gotten Jade some orange juice and a mug of coffee. I set it all down in front of her at my little table.
“What is all this?” she asked. “I’ve never seen food like this before.”
“Our scientists and chefs created new foods for us. We live a lot longer, so we have more time to learn things.”
“That’s understandable. But what are these things?” she asked, a confused look upon her face. Her eyebrows furrowed, and a small pout captured her lips. I fought back a grin; she was just too cute. Does she realize how flawless she is in my eyes?
“These are pancakes with syrup, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, and biscuits and gravy.” I explained, pointing to each. “This is orange juice, and coffee.”
“What does coffee do?” she picked up the mug and smelled the dark liquid.
“It helps you wake up in the morning.” I watched her take a sip and cringe. “It takes some getting used to. When I tried it the first time I hated it.” She slid the coffee mug across the small table, offering it to me. I gladly accepted it and downed the brew in two gulps.
Jade and I talked while she ate her breakfast. She told me it was all delicious. When she had eaten everything, we began to talk about the situation.
“First off, where are we?” Jade asked.
"Let's get comfortable for this. It could take a while." I picked her up bridal style and swept her across the room. I sat her down on my bed, and she bounced up and down lightly. “Sorry.” She said. I smiled; I love bouncing on my bed.
“It’s ok. My bed is really fun to jump on.” I paused. “You are underground in a vampire coven. I’m…kind of the prince of the vampires.” She looked up at me, her eyes big and childlike.
“A prince?” she asked uncertainly. I nodded. “Why am I here?”
“You know how I told you that the legend behind your necklace isn’t real?” she nodded. “Well…it’s true.” she gasped, her hand flew to her mouth. “Yeah, I know.”
“So…I was brought here…to marry you?” she sounded disappointed. My heart sank as her chin lowered and she stared at her hands. I noticed her eyes brim with tears, and my heart broke.
“Not right away…I’m sorry things are…I didn’t want it to happen this way.”
“How did you want it to happen?” she asked quietly, still looking at her knuckles.
“I wanted you to love me first.” The words were out of my mouth before I had time to think. I looked up at her, and my heart swelled. A pink blush had spread across the top of her cheeks, making her even more beautiful. Is that possible? I asked myself as I stared at her, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. God, she is so perfect.
“I’d like you to love me too.” She admitted quietly. I turned to her and sank to my knees in front of her, taking her hands in mine.
“I think I already do.” Simple words, complicated emotions. Somehow they evened out. My eyes were locked with Jade’s and I don’t know what came over me, but I leaned in and kissed her.
*Jade’s POV*
“I wanted you to love me first.” The words made my heart melt. Oh, if only he loved me…I wasn’t sure if I loved him, but I yearned for him. The thought of a man loving me, really loving me...it makes me think I might have a future beyond sewing and sitting like a prop by my husband's side, beyond living only for my husband's manly needs and wants, beyond being a ghost in a sumptuous manor. I knew what Gerard was, I’d seen him before a few times, and I thought he was gorgeous. He was, in one word, godly. His hair was black like a raven’s wing, and his eyes hazel, filled with wisdom and love trying to pretend it was really bloodlust. He wasn’t just a blood-sucking monster. He was a caring, kind-hearted vampire. I’ll admit I’ve swooned over him for almost a month now, since I first saw him in the woods as I'd cried. He hadn’t spoken, just stayed in his shady tree, out of the sun. His presence alone had comforted me.
“I’d like you to love me too.” I said, half hoping he didn’t hear. He kneeled in front of me and took my hands in his. They were like ice, but my heart beat faster at the contact.
“I think I already do.” He confessed. I swear my heart stopped beating at those words. His eyes were locked with mine, and he leaned in to kiss me. Our lips met in awkward perfection; we fit together perfectly, but I was so inexperienced that I needed his guidance. And he gave it to me, cradling my head in his hands, one hand on my neck, the other tangled in my hair, directing my tongue with his, showing me what to do. This was wrong, I knew. I was engaged to another man, and kissing before marriage was wrong. But it felt so good. I broke the kiss hesitantly.
“Gerard…this isn’t right.” He looked at me, trying to figure out what was bothering me.
“Forget the mortal laws. They don’t pertain to you anymore.” He said with a smile.
“But I’m engaged!” I said.
“That doesn’t matter. Your home is with me now.” He cupped my cheek in hishand, running his thumb over my skin, trying to comfort me.
“What if I don’t want to live here?” I asked. His face dropped, like I’d smacked him.
“You don’t want to stay with me?” he said, his voice choked with sadness.
“I just meant…what if I didn’t…” I stopped; his eyes were clouded with hurt. “Gerard…I…” I didn’t know what I wanted.
“Don’t.” he said with a wave of his hand. “You want to go back? To your fiancée that doesn’t love you? To a life that gives you nothing but hard work and tears?”
“No…”
“Then what’s wrong? I’m trying to make you happy, Jade, but I don’t know how.” I was silent, angry at myself for hurting him. “Tell me what you want, and I’ll give it to you.” I looked into his eyes and almost burst into tears. His eyes were so sad, so full of pain. I caused that, I think with a heavy heart. I wondered what it would be like to be with him forever. Is he what I’ve been searching for?
“I…I want freedom.” I said finally.
“I can easily give you that. But you have to live here to be free from the mortal laws. If you really want freedom, you have to stay here, with me, forever.” He said. “Is that what you want?” I paused, thinking hard.
“I don’t know what I want.” I said with a sigh. He nodded, acting calm, but I could tell he was very upset. “I just…need more time to get used to this. This is…really big.”
“I know. I shouldn’t have asked you to make a decision so soon. I’m sorry.”
“Gerard, please, it’s fine. I know you’re under a lot of stress from your father and your…people.”
“To make your decision…I’m sure you’d like to get to know this place and my people?” he gave a shy smile.
“I’d like that very much. But…I’d need some new clothes.” Gerard laughed. I liked his laugh. It was cute, befitting of his demeanor.
“I’ll take you to my cousin, she’s a seamstress.”
“Thank you.” I smiled and stifled a yawn, but Gerard caught it.
“Tired?” he asked as I yawned again, my eyelids getting heavy. I nodded and scooted myself under the blankets again as he turned to leave.
“Gerard?” I called. He turned to look back at me. I held my arms out to him, a silent plea to come back. He smiled and slid under the covers with me and wrapped his arms around me, placing a kiss on my forehead before I fell asleep with my head on his chest.
