*End of an Era: Fallyn *
Forcing a smile to her face, Tarja walked into the large building in which the photo shoot would take place- watching as people rushed around trying to prepare.
This shoot was to promote a charity event that would be taking place in a few weeks and featured only metal and rock bands. The event was focused on eliminating child abuse and only European bands were being featured, which was a fantastic thing really.
Even though Tarja hadn’t recorded any solo songs, the organisers had still gotten in touch with her and told her that she would help bring in the crowds. For this sort of thing, she’d been more than happy to help and so many other people she knew, like Cristina Scabbia and Anneke van Giersbergen, had agreed to sing. It would give her a chance to catch up with Ville Vallo and Christofer Johnsson as well.
It had been almost a year since Nightwish had broken up and things hadn’t been easy- she still missed the boys more than anything!
Nothing had been done about the lake house and she had left her only key behind in the house when she left. If they didn’t want to sell or buy her out then she wasn’t really bothered, she didn’t want to sell it either.
At least they would have some happy memories there.
On the other hand her novel, Sanctuary, had been released only yesterday under a pseudonym and the publishers were pleased- it was selling as well as can be expected for a first novel but the reviews coming back were good. At least something in her life was going right.
No one had asked her about ‘End of an Era’ and she had no idea what was going on- as far as she knew, the DVD was going to be released in two months. Pity if she wanted to add to it.
Tarja smiles as she sees the members of the band she’d be singing with. The organisers, having organised a metal/rock concert had arranged for her to sing with a new symphonic metal band called Fallyn (pronounced 'Fallen'). They hadn’t yet found a lead vocalist they were happy with and, so far, their guitarist and keyboardist had done all of the singing.
She wasn’t quite sure how she felt about singing with them, though. They were nice enough, but they weren’t Tuomas, Marco, Emppu and Jukka. They weren’t Nightwish.
“Tarja,” someone murmured from behind her and she spun around, dark hair swirling around her as she came to face Radu Leven, Fallyn’s guitarist and vocalist.
“Good morning, Radu. Are Viktor, Raphael and Giorgios here yet?” Tarja’s voice is soft and she’s trying to avoid straining it. The concert isn’t until next week, but she’s still nervous about singing again and the songs the boys had given her were just as difficult as some of Tuomas!
The dark haired guitarist smiles, green eyes glittering in the fluorescent lights overhead, “they’re coming later. It’s only the female leads being shot at the moment.”
“That’s comforting,” Tarja murmurs sarcastically.
“Tarja!” Another voice calls from behind her and Tarja smiles, already recognising the voice of Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia. “How are you?”
Pale green eyes glittering happily, Tarja embraces the other singer, “fine, how are you?”
Within moments, everyone is talking and the noise in the room is kept low as all of the lead singers try not to overuse their voices and the bands try not to anger the singers.
Only the female-lead bands are here right now and, in many cases, the full bands haven’t arrived either. The first photo shoot will only feature the seven female vocalists and will be a bit of a teaser for the concert as the only bands confirmed to the public had been HIM, Helloween, Apocalyptica, Lacuna Coil and The Gathering. Besides that, everything had been kept quiet.
“Female leads to the make up room!” The photographer calls and, with that, the girls move quickly into the afore-mentioned room and the preparation begins.
With dark dresses on and make up and hair darkly gothic, the seven lead singers step out into the main room, each of them feeling like Queens as their dresses glide across the floor. Not one of the girls are wearing their shoes yet and the photo shoot ahead seems posed to be an interesting one.
Half an hour later, the first few shots are complete as the girls kneel with their backs to the camera, completely disguised. Toni Harkonen, the same photographer that Nightwish had used for Once, had been in charge of the shoot and had told the girls that this promotional photo, to be released later that day, would be computer-edited so that each of them had Angel wings. The title would be ‘Europe’s Angels of Metal and Rock’.
The concert had even been given a name – Hand of Fate.
More photographs of the seven girls were taken in various poses, now with shoes on and faces seen. It was all so elegant and refined, so wonderful and yet so very gothic.
Sacred, even.
It was also a fantastic chance for the girls, some of the biggest names in European metal, to get to know each other. It seemed to only take minutes for the girls- Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation, Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil, Anneke van Giersbergen from The Gathering, Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull from Leaves’ Eyes, Simone Simons from Epica, Vibeke Stene from Tristania, and Tarja Turnunen ex-Nightwish- to start talking and getting along. Soon they all felt like old friends.
Band photos were taken next and slowly the male-lead bands started to arrive, the room becoming more and more crowded as time passed.
It was the photos with Fallyn that Tarja dreaded, she was uncertain how they would be done since she wasn’t actually a part of that band… Yet Toni had an answer for that too, making her stand forward and apart from the rest of the band.
She’d had to walk off three times to get make up touched up- she missed Nightwish.
The next photos that were taken was the big group photo where all of the female-lead bands crowded into one area. After that, it was all the male-lead bands who were here.
All big crowd pullers, many of the eight male bands- Nightwish, HIM, The Rasmus, My Dying Bride, Therion, Hevein, Helloween and Apolcalyptica- tried to out-do each other. It ended up with some people jumping on each other’s shoulders.
It was even worse when they combined all the bands for a photo.
Yet things calmed down a bit when only the leads were called forward to do the ‘Angels and Demons’ shot.
There was some confusion, however, when it came to Nightwish and Apocalyptica as there was no clear lead for them anymore. It ended up that both Marco and Tuomas came forward for the shoot, as did all of Apocalyptica.
Having all of them men- Marco and Tuomas from Nightwish, Ville Vallo from HIM, Lauri Ylonen from The Rasmus, Aaron Stainthorpe from My Dying Bride, Christofer Johnsson from Therion, Juha Immonen from Hevein, Andreas Deris from Helloween and the Apocalyptica boys (Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, Perttu Kivilaakso and Mikko Siren)- there made the photo more interesting. The girls were expected to look angelic while the boys played at being demonic. It was amusing, really.
Tuomas and Marco were also given a spot rather far away from Tarja, but she still couldn’t help glancing across at them every now and again.
Finally, the girls were done and told that they could leave. On Wednesday would be the first stage rehearsal and then everyone would meet at a predesignated location on Friday where they would spend the night before performing on Saturday. It was all a show of secrecy as each band was arriving at different times in dark cars and driven directly to underground parking.
The organisers hoped that no one would know who was actually playing before the concert began.
Rumours were being circulating that Cradle of Filth and Theatres des Vampires were going to be playing at the concert, but from what the organisers had said both bands had been too busy to come. Either that or they didn’t want to.
Still…
Tarja glances back at the four members of Nightwish as they sit, all done up and waiting to be called for their photos. She used to be sitting with them. Then again, if she’d still been with Nightwish, it would be the five of them heading off to practice now. Not her and Fallyn- two separates to form a whole.
In that moment, watching the boys, Tarja notices something familiar sitting next to Tuomas- Sanctuary. Tuomas has a published copy of her novel!
Eyes glistening with tears, Tarja jumps when she feels a hand touch her shoulder and focuses her eyes on the sympathetic ones of Sharon. Within Temptation has already wandered off a bit more, leaving their lead singer to talk alone with the ex-Nightwish singer. “You okay?” Sharon asks gently, glancing over at Nightwish as well.
“Yes,” Tarja whispers as she glances back towards the band, her eyes briefly catching onto the wolfish eyes of Tuomas.
“Look, Tarja, if you need someone to talk to… well, you have all of us girls’ numbers now- so you’ve got at least six female friends to call and then you’ve got Fallyn who seem so happy to have you singing with them…” Sharon glances back at her band, eyes glittering with tears, “I know I couldn’t have handled it as well as you have…”
A moment passes in silence as Tarja watches Nightwish all glance her way before she turns back to Sharon, shoulders slumped. “Thank you for your kind words,” she murmurs thickly.
Sharon nods, “I want you to sing something on stage for me, Tarja- Robert, Ruud, Jeroen, Martijn, Stephan and I have told the organisers that you’re welcome to sing ‘Destroyed’ or a new song ‘Forgiven’ on stage for the concert. I thought it would be better suited to you at the moment. Fallyn already has the music and lyrics for both songs…”
“Thank you again, Sharon,” Tarja responds, forcing a smile to her lips. “What song are you doing as the official cover?”
The organisers had arranged for each band to do a cover of a song, Tarja already knew that Nightwish were probably doing something along the lines of an Ozzy Osbourne cover.
“‘Running up that Hill’ by Kate Bush, you?” Sharon responds with a smile.
Laughing slightly, Tarja smiles, “that one’s a bit obvious for you, isn’t it? I’m doing ‘Losing My Religion’ by REM.”
Smiling widely, Sharon winks at Tarja, glancing back at Nightwish as she responds, “I would have thought they’d ask you to do something like ‘Phantom of the Opera’ or ‘Over the Hills and Far Away’.” A moment passes in silence, “I hear Nightwish is doing Black Sabbath’s song ‘Black Sabbath’, The Rasmus is doing ‘By My Side’ and Lacuna Coil are doing ‘Seven Seconds’.”
“Really? I can’t imagine Cristina and Andrea doing ‘Seven Seconds’…” Smiling, Tarja throws one more glance Nightwish’s way, her heart heavy as she only wants to run over and sit with them for a while. “I’d best be going, Fallyn and I need to practice…”
“Good luck, Tarja,” Sharon murmurs, giving the shorter woman a quick hug, “I’ll see you on Wednesday.”
With a wave in Sharon’s direction, Tarja leaves the building, quickly arranging to meet with Fallyn for practice in an hour as she heads towards her car. Everything feels surreal, as if she’s walking away from a Nightwish shoot as the wind blows her hair back from her face, chilling her to the bone.
It’s only later that night, when the practice is done and the moon is hight that Tarja sits silently, staring outside at the stars and cries once more for the love lost. For her Nightwish.
