Hayley sat up with a jolt and hit Josh in the head, causing him to fall off the couch and onto the floor. “Damn, girl. I was just replacing the rag on your forehead. You don’t have to kill me over it.”
“Sorry, Josh. I just had a bad dream. I didn’t mean to hit you. Are you okay?” Hayley pulled Josh gently back onto the couch and flinched at the sight of the bruise forming on his forehead. “You’re bruised.”
Josh shrugged and handed her the rag. “I’m a lycanthrope, remember? It’ll be gone with in the hour. Don’t worry about it. We’ll just call it a love tap.”
He stood and walked to the bar door, calling down into the bar for Jeremy or Andy to get their asses up there. Andy was one who came up the stairs fuming. “Josh, what have I told you about talking like that? Now what’s up?”
“I’m awake.” Hayley raised her hand and let him see her. He walked to her and hugged her tight, giving her a kiss on the cheek. “Before you say anything, Daddy, let me guess. You were worried about me, and you want to know what’s going on?”
“Right on, honey.”
“When a dragon has been eighteen for twenty-four hours, they come into their full powers. I was born at midnight, so at midnight the day after my birthday, I came into my full powers. That means, full dragon capacity and a few moments of being completely human. It was weird and I didn’t like it.”
“Yeah, it was never any fun for us either, Hayley.” Josh flopped beside her on the couch and put his arm around her. “I was human for thirteen years, Zac for ten, and we have talked about how we never really liked it. Yes, we have to turn into wild animals once a month, but the rewards far outweigh the risks.”
Hayley laughed and shook her head. “You are such an idiot at times, Josh, but I love you.” She kissed him on the cheek before looking up as the bar door opened.
Jeremy’s head popped in and he smiled. “Hey, Haze, glad to see you up and running. Um, Andy, we have a little problem. You have a phone call from BE about Hayley’s little night last night. They got it on satellite.”
“Shit.” Andy went to the phone and pushed the extension. “Hey, Bill … Yes, I knew she was a dragon … I didn’t think she was harmful to anyone … She went to Contract Valley where no one has been in over a year … OK, OK. I’ll bring her down there as soon as she’s better … Fine, I’ll bring her down there as soon as I get her into the car … Yeah, see you too, Bill. Bye.”
He hung up the phone and grumbled under his breath. He glanced at Jeremy who shrugged. “I’ll kick the drunks out and put up the sign saying the bar’s going to be closed for a few days.” He disappeared into the bar and could be heard kicking people out.
Hayley looked at Andy and frowned. “What’s going on, Daddy?”
“Hayley, baby, there’s something I have to tell you that I was hoping never to have to tell you.” Andy sat on the other side of Hayley and looked up as Zac walked into the room. “You and Josh should hear it too, Zac, so you might as well have a seat.” Zac frowned, but sat down in the chair across from his brother, confusion on his face.
Andy turned back to Hayley. “You know how Jeremy is a contract killer? A bounty hunter?” Hayley nodded. “Well, your uncle Joe and I are too. Remember about a year ago when you stayed with you Uncle Joe and I was gone on a business trip? Well I was actually fighting the War against the Vampires.”
“That’s why you were all cut up. You said it was a bar fight!”
“I know, baby, and I’m sorry I lied to you, but I had to. I didn’t want you to get involved in that life. But apparently, they received the video of you in Contract Valley last night and want you to come to HQ and talk to them. Something about seeing if you’re a danger to us or not. I don’t know, but we have to go. Which means …” He looked up at Josh and Zac. “That you two get to go with us, because I am not leaving you here alone.”
Jeremy walked into the room and flopped onto Zac’s lap, par usual. “Did you tell them, Andy?”
“Yes.”
“Good. I was actually missing BE. I want to see Chloe and Brendon’s new baby. I hear she looks like Chloe. A good thing in my opinion. Can you imagine another Brendon?” Jeremy smiled, joking about their boss. He saw the same smile on Andy’s face as the older man shook his head.
Andy stood and shook his head. “You all have twenty minutes to grab some clothes and put them in a bag. We shouldn’t be gone any longer than two weeks, but grab enough to last longer if need be.”
Everyone scattered into their rooms to grab clothes, reporting in exactly twenty minutes to the living room. They all piled into the van that they used for band trips, instruments still in the Uhaul attached to the back, and began the two hour drive to New Haven.
Hayley sat in the back between Zac and Josh, as she always did on road trips, and looked out the windows at the distant buildings of the city she had never been too, but always dreamed of seeing. Now she was going to be staying up there for a few days. It was like a dream come true. Maybe her father would know someone high enough up that the band could play somewhere big.
Her heart leapt at the thought and she found herself yawning, real sleep threatening to wash over her. She laid her head on Zac’s shoulder and began to feel her eyes droop. It was one of the reasons she sat between the boys. That was the thought that put a smile on her face as she fell into a fit sleep.
