Hey all! Kuinnu here! Sorry it's taken so long for me to get this chapter up. Thanks to all who have reviewed on this story so far. ^_^ Half of this chapter was written by my best friend and my Beta, Arien. I had to go back and extend it so as to make it into a full chapter. But she needs to get her credit when it's due. So then, the music choice for this chapter is the song, 'Orenji no Taiyou', by Gackt-sama and HYDE-sama. For those of you who have seen it, it's from the movie 'Moon Child'.
Chapter 3: Memories of the Past
He remembered the night so clearly as if only yesterday, it was still the time of demons and warring daimyo and shogun. It was when demons and ghosts were still able to touch the world more openly. He remembered his bare feet padding on the soft grass as he played with his friends, playing sword fighting and Daimyo.
Sho's mother told him not to be out late or the demons would eat him and not to go near to the lake because of the bakemono (demons and ghosts) there.
“Ne, Sho, don’t get too close to the lake.” Another boy around the same age called to him. “C’mon Toshi. You’re not still scared of those stories of bakemono are you?” Sho asked his friend. “We’re old enough to know that there’s nothing down there. We’ve gone to the edge numerous times.”
“And each time against your mother’s warnings.” Toshi told him.
“But each time, there’s nothing there.” Sho said. “We keep pushing our luck, Sho. Let’s head back.” Toshi said. “You’re just being a coward, Toshi.” Another boy said. Toshi and Sho both turned to see a slightly older boy behind them, a boy by the name of Haru. Sho frowned a bit at the older boy. “What do you want, Haru?” “I see that you’re listening to Toshi again. Staying away from the lake because of old legends.”
“That’s not it.” Sho said, gripping his fists. Haru only smirked and crossed his arms. “Then what is it? Admit it, you two are scared. You’re not brave enough to go out onto the lake.”
“I’ll show you who’s brave.” Sho said, storming off. “Sho, matte!” Toshi called to his friend.
The lanky young teenager was so wound up in impressing his friend he forgot his mother's warning. To show his bravery he strode out the lake proudly. He waded in while none of his friends dared to come near.
As he got further out he noticed on the shore what seemed to be a beautiful woman touching the water as if setting something adrift. As Sho edged closer the woman looked up at him the moon light the only light upon her, the figure stood as he drew nearer and nearer. He felt entranced by this beauty and sought to find more of her. "Boy!" Called the sharp voice of the person who was not a woman but a man of surpassing beauty. "Why have you come to my lake?" the cold clear voice asked.
"I wanted to show my friends I am brave," the boy replied. Suddenly the stranger was upon him. "A test of bravery? Let us see that bravery when I steal life from you." A sharp stabbing pain seared in Sho's neck as the fangs pierced his flesh.
The agonized scream Sho let out was heart wrenching. And even the one stealing away his life had pity on the boy. "Go foolish boy and know this. I, Kei, have proved you to be a brave fool. Now get out of my sight. I can not stand to be disturbed by mere humans," spat the dark vampire. Sho, weak from loss of blood, stumbled back to the place his friends, who all had abandoned him, had been.
Disheartened, he stumbled to his home gripping his bleeding neck in pain. As he fell through the door, his mother shrieked afraid her charms from the temple for demon protection had failed.
"Kaa-san." Sho let out weakly. His mother rushed to her son's aid only to halt seeing his neck. The sight of the blood was breaking her heart. He had not listened to her warnings. And now, her son, her precious son, was doomed.
"I told you to stay away from the lake.... I can't let you stay here, Sho. You belong to the Bakemono now." She said tears filling her old eyes. She pushed him outside with naught but the clothes on his back. Sho wandered, confused by his mother's words. Did she not love him anymore?
His dazed eyes fell upon the form of Kei who had followed him in curious interest. "So... you were even such a fool to not listen to a mother's warning." He sighed reaching for the boy. Sho drew back from him. "Why does Kaa-san hate me now? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME!!!" Sho screamed at Kei who moved as swiftly as night wind.
"You mother believes you are marked for death this night. But I will not kill you. I need a new servant, and you will be that servant. Now you become one of us, the night clan!" Kei declared, biting viciously in to the already abused neck. Blood spilled freely now as he began to faint. Then something warm began to pass through his lips. It was a bitter coppery taste that made him feel ill. But... he liked it. It tasted good. It was filling him faster now, that lust, that need for the blood of another. It was driving him mad. Kei released the boy and pulled out his new pet's first meal, a bandit who'd tried to kill Kei the day before. Kei had been deliberating whether or not to eat the man then but he had just found the man's use.
Sho ripped in to the neck of the man tearing a chunk of flesh as he ravenously tried to chew his meal. The blood flowed in to his mouth and deeply did he drink of his first prey. But this was wrong, this was wrong! He was eating another person, another human! Sho pulled away finally, the tears in his eyes falling down his cheeks. He had become a monster. He was no longer human.
Kei slowly placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “It’s better if you forget your mortal life now. Remembering your friends, your family, will only make this harder for you.”
*********************
He forced himself to stop remembering that painful night. The older vampire had been right. Remembering his family had made things harder for him. Made him curse himself and his tainted immortality. For three years afterwards, he cursed his ‘father’. Kei had made him into a monster that night. But Kei also became his master, his mentor, and his lover. After Kei left him, freed him, in a word, Sho changed his name to Gackt and began to discover his natural gift for music.
It was around that time that he began to pray for someone to help ease his loneliness. Someone to love him and who he could love in return. But his dream was a selfish one. No lover he took would be willing to sacrifice their own mortality for him. Those who wanted to only wanted it for their own reason, a release from the bonds of human fate. Not for him. Those few who did love him were too scared of his vampiric nature to change themselves. He would pray to whatever power there was to send him someone who’d love him enough to share a tainted immortality.
The musician moved towards his window, opening it to allow the night breeze to come into his house. His dark eyes closed as his nose picked up on the scent of roses on the wind. “Roses on the wind again? The source of this scent, the one I’ve been waiting for… They’re coming.” He said softly. “At last…”

"Do NOT let me sleep past 9:00." Quinn told Allen as she headed to her part of the hotel room. "9:15 at the latest." After so many hours on a plane, the American woman was glad that she’d have a bed to sleep in again. She had met up with her friend Mimi Matsumoto, who had been there to pick up the two reporters and take them to their hotel. She was also the same girl who would be acting as the blonde’s translator during her interviews. She also happened to be engaged to You, one of the guitarists in Gackt’s band.
"Awww... But that'll mean I'LL have to get up early." The British boy whined with a bit of a pout. One thing he hated doing was getting up early.
"I have a job to do tomorrow at 10:30." She said, brushing out her hair.
"Well... I guess your right. If I'm gonna get to see Utada, then I need to get the other stuff out of the way first." The boy said grinning.
"Just don't make an ass of yourself when you meet her." The blonde said. "I packed everything you'll need for the interview."
"Me? An Ass? I'll be on my best behavior before I woo her." He said with a wink.
The blonde turned and gave him a 'don't even start' look. Allen just laughed at that look. "I figured you'd be used to that side of me by now..."
"Just behave since I won't be there to keep you in check." She said. "I can say the same for you." The boy chuckled with a smirk.
"Unlike you, dearest Allen, I've kept my cool around hundreds of people." She said.
He smirked wider and chuckled a little darker. "But none of them were Gackt Camui..." He pointed out to her. Quinn winced and put down her hairbrush. "Touché."
"Oh I can picture it. You'll go in, see him and your heart will flutter from his very form. But you try to be professional and get the job done...but slowly you sink deeper into his charms before he'll ask out of the blue. 'Run away with me and let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear'." Allen teased as he predicted the events to come.
"How about I interview Hikaru-san and you take Gackt-sama? Not only will I have the easier job, but it'll save both of us the trouble of trying to sleep with our interviewee." Quinn said with a dark smirk.
"That's just cruel!" Allen sobbed comically. "I'm kidding. You have to interview Hikaru-san because she's able to speak English. God knows you didn't learn anything on the plane." The American girl joked. "Well you can't say I didn't try." Allen said with a nervous laugh.
"Alright... I'm going to get some sleep. Remember, no later than 9:15." She reminded him.
He saluted her. "Yes Ma'am." The boy said before falling back onto his bed.
Quinn shook her head slightly as she walked into her room, climbed into her bed and drifted off to sleep.
