Chapter 3
Mirror
Gackt, Sugizo, Miyavi, and Yoshiki had been introduced to Kaiora, and each may never have forgotten that first image of her. “I don’t think I prepared myself enough” Gackt spoke up as they awaited the girls in the meeting room.
Sugizo shook his head “I...I don’t think I’ve ever ...seen a woman so...so defeated.”
Even Miyavi remained unusually quiet after that first meeting. However it was Yoshiki that the four seemed to be concerned with. After seeing Kaiora he was shaken, and when the others approached her to shake her hand gently he hesitated until the rest had shook it before quickly stepping forward, shaking her hand and stepping back quickly. The girls seemed shocked at Yoshiki’s reaction but his four band members did not miss the gentle look that appeared in the girls eyes for a moment before reverting back to their lifeless form. After the meeting Yoshiki had disappeared and approaching the time to meet the girls again he was yet to be seen.
The boys turned as the door opened and each of the girls came in, they seemed to form a wall around Kaiora, helping her walk steadily. It seemed as though she had used much of her energy already. Her face was cleaned from the tear streaks they’d seen earlier, yet the saw her nose and eyes were still puffy.
‘Even now when she wakes up she’s either dillusional or crying’ Mike’s voice rang in their ears. Gackt rose quickly and walked over to pull a chair out for her. She looked to him “Thank-you” she said.
He was sure she did not mean to but when she looked at him and spoke he felt a wave of energy fall from his body. Like she had just sucked a bit of life force from him. Suddenly feeling tired he only nodded before walking back to his chair.
Her friends surrounded Kaiora and Sugizo and Miyavi suddenly felt as if they should have done more than just sit there. So Sugizo poured her a glass of water and placed it in front of Kaiora. She looked up at him and nodded, the guitarist seemed to suffer the same fate as Gackt as he felt a wave of energy leave his body. He stared at her as he sat back into his chair. Jo looked around “Where’s Yoshiki?”
‘It was something I didn’t mean to do. I didn’t mean to be so much trouble’
‘I can’t help but think, if I hadn’t met him. He’d still be alive today’
Yoshiki splashed the cold water over his face several times keeping his shaky hands over his face last time. He took several deep breaths, he steadied himself as much as possible before looking up at the mirror. Seeing the man standing before him he felt his exterior strengthen. He wasn’t the same. He wasn’t the same person. He was... “You are stronger” he told himself “You are strong. Don’t let this shake you.”
But as he said those words, he saw her again, he saw her standing by that window, with a aura of complete defeat surrounding her. He saw her in the spot he’d been in ten years before. In that spot he kept himself for an entire year.
‘If music can save lives, and you really are gods. Then I beg you to save her soul. I’m tired of watching my friend eat herself alive over something she had no control over.’
‘I can’t help but think, if I hadn’t met him. He’d still be alive today.’
‘He’d still be alive today.’
‘This is a great life ne Yoshiki?’
“Yoshiki?”
He jumped and turned to see Sugizo standing there. Sugizo stared at Yoshiki liek he thought the older man may blow up at him, but as he stared at his friend Sugizo’s gaze softened. “Are you okay?” he asked.
Yoshiki swallowed hard before running his hand through his hair. He then turned and grabbed a towel before wiping his face “I’m fine.”
“It’s scary to look into a mirror isn’t it?”
Yoshiki straightened. Sugizo leaned against the mirror, and stared into it sideways. “It’s amazing, you never think that you’d see yourself in someone else. But standing there and staring at that girl...I saw it too.”
He turned to Yoshiki and his eyes grew sympathetic. “I remember that day” he said “I remember that year. I remember Yoshiki” he said with sorrow “I lost him to remember. After all, if not for him the I would not be here. If not for him, my dream may never have come true. And so when I heard he was gone...” his head dipped “what I saw in that girl upstairs and in that room is something that only other’s can recognize if they’d lived it themselves.”
Yoshiki closed his eyes and took a breath, “I thought” his voice was hoarse and scratchy, he swallowed hard “I thought...that I could handle it. I thought, that I could look at her and think...think that I could look beyond my own pains of the past to see someone else’s. But...but when I saw her. When I saw the look in her eyes...”
Sugizo nodded “I gave her a glass of water, and when she looked at me, I swear she stole some of my own happiness away from me. Standing in that room with her for more than a minute was almost unbearable. I could swear that it was the darkest room I’ve ever stood in. When they told me she’d lost her will to live I didn’t know that she’d take others as well.”
Yoshiki turned and stared at the mirror, staring at himself he felt a sense of his own defeat “Is that what I looked like?”
Sugizo looked up “Is that what you saw in me after that day?’ Yoshiki asked “People say I was hard to deal with. That I was impossible to talk to...is...was that me?”
Sugizo pushed himself off the glass and sighed.
“No”
They turned to see Gackt standing there. Gackt looked back and forth between the two defeated musicians and shook his head, “I saw you that day, and though I do agree you were distraught, and you were defeated. You weren’t dead,” he stepped up to Yoshiki “Yoshiki-san, that wasn’t you. There’s no need to be afraid of a woman you just met. She’s not going to revert you back to what you were when hide died. This is not you, Yoshiki, this is not the man who started the Visual Kei revolution of Japan. This is not the man who started his own label because he was so determined to make the music he loved. This is not the legend Yoshiki Hayashi. What this is, what that is, is a woman who’s lost the single most important person in the entire world to her. That is a woman who has lost the other half of her soul, that is a dead woman walking, a woman trapped in her own mind afraid to face the truth. A soulless body that is desperately attempting to hold onto herself. That is Kaiora, not Yoshiki.”
Sugizo and Yoshiki stared at the singer and the truth him them. Gackt turned “You have to be strong” he said “You have to be strong for this woman, who is asking for you to help her. You have to be strong for her friends who’ve been fighting for months on end to save her, and you have to be strong for yourselves. Don’t let this defeat you. Don’t let her heart break yours.”
Sugizo ran through his hair “Thanks man” he said “Almost lost it there.”
Yoshiki nodded “Yeah...I’m sorry I lost it.”
Gackt nodded “Well, looking into a mirror can be scary sometimes. Even if the image you see isn’t you.”
Sugizo’s question brought the three back to reality “What’s happening with the meeting.”
Yoshiki shot up “Oh no, Miyavi isn’t trying to explain to them what’s going on is he?”
Gackt couldnt’ help but laugh “Yeah, I just gave Miyavi the reigns and let him go. Ronin is explaining things to them. But they are waiting for us. So...let’s go. Are we inspired?”
The two smiled at him and followed.
Miyavi raised his hand.
Ronin turned with an exasperated sigh “Miyavi...these instructions and details are for the guests not for the band members.”
Miyavi slouched, “It was just a question.”
“Yes, well out of everyone this meeting was designed for you are the one who’s asked the most questions, and each answer has already been given to you.”
He turned and the girls saw Miyavi stick out his tongue at the older man. All fought to hold their laughter as Ronin continued on safety procedures.
Yoshiki, Gackt, and Sugizo walked towards the office “Wait.”
They all turned to see Minami standing behind them. The young girl twiddled with several jade and turquoise bracelets before looking up at them with hazel eyes, she seemed to be thinking over her words carefully. “These are for you” she said holding out the bracelets “For protection.”
Each of them stared at the bracelets. There was nothing special about them, just looked like regular jade and turquoise bracelets. “Protection from what?” Sugizo asked.
Minami looked into their eyes “Kaiora” she said.
Gackt reached out and took one form her hand, he was followed by his bandmates. Minami bowed “It is said that a soulless body that still lives will seek out other souls to feet it’s non-existing one” she said “Kaiora lost her soul three months ago, and she’s searching for the light she lost, in her search, she started inadvertently taking other peoples lifeforce into herself. I noticed it when I would go to her house and I’d immediately sense that dark cloud surrounding her entire house. I also saw how everyone who would come within meters of her would leave looking exhausted. One day I went to her home and the cloud was gone, and everyone seemed...just a little better. It was her grandmother who noticed this cloud, and decided to do something about it. She set up some kind of medicine in Kaiora’s room, after that the cloud didn’t plague anyone or anywhere except for Kaiora and her room. However it followed us here. I must apologize for not remembering that you need protection as well.”
The three then placed their bracelets on “Doomo arigatoo gozaimasu” Yoshiki spoke.
She smiled. “It is good that you are trying to help your friend, by helping us.”
“Did you give Miyavi one yet?” Sugizo asked.
She shook her head and cowered back under their incredulous looks “Miyavi’s life force is much too strong to be penetrated by her” Minami said.
I think you overestimate him” said Sugizo.
“And I think you UNDERestimate hi” Minami said, “There are souls on this earth that are quite strong. They radiate with life, even in their darkest moments. Try as is might the darkness holding Kaiora in limbo does not have the strength to take from him. And even it did, Miyavi’s life force is so strong that the light pours out could not possibly be overshadowed. I mean it’s only the first day and...well...just look at him.”
All three turned to see Miyavi holding Ronin in a head lock while biting him. “Now look at Kaiora.”
All turned and were thunderstruck to see the girl staring at the scene with...humour. In her eyes they saw a want, a need, and though it did not show on her face they saw...a smile. “I had a feeling that each of you could bring something to lead her back to her former self. Miyavi very well may be the key that opens the door.”
The three stared at the scene as Miyavi had now sat in a roller chair and was dragging Yoshiki’s assistant around the office ‘cawing’.
He suddenly halted like a deer in headlights when he looked out the window and saw the three staring at him. He immediately let go of the man and swung back to his previous spot, picked up some papers and pretended he was reading intently even thought they could see the upside down writing facing them while Ronin sputtered on the floor.
Sugizo started laughing “You’ve got to admit, that the man’s got a way to make people laugh.”
He gestured towards the group of girls surrounding Kaiora. Jo was leaning on Kaiora’s lap, angel had fallen off her chair, and Annette had her head against the table visibly shaking. Miyavi every once in a while would glance up to see if the older men were looking at him, then he’d throw a nervous glance at the scene before him, before continuing to attempt to read a blank upside down paper.
“I think we’d better get in there” Gackt said.
All turned to see that Minami had gone.
The next day...
Gackt ran his fingers over the piano keys before testing several. He played a simple tune before changing his position further down, and repeating the same tune. He did it several times before he was satisfied and returned to his first position. He then began playing the melody that had been stuck in his head since that morning.
Once satisfied with the piano’s performance he stopped and turned. He then let out a small yell and nearly fell out of his seat to see Minami sitting beside him. She stared at him strangely when he cried out and gripped one side of the chair before slamming his arm into the piano in an attempt to catch himself.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
He looked around, several crew members had stopped their work and were staring at him. He then looked back to the redhead and straightened himself slowly. “Sorry” she apologized “My friends say I always sneak up on them too...I try to make as much noise as possible but...it seems to be in vain.”
She looked a little shameful but he could tell from the look in her eyes, she was quite amused at scaring him. He straightened his jacket, “That’s okay” he said “...what are you doing here?”
“Well, Ronin brought us for a tour, but me, Annette, and Angel decided to go on our own around to check everything out. He’s just taking Jo and Kaiora around. I wanted to check out the instruments, and the set up. That was a beautiful song. Did you write it?”
Gackt nodded “It’s something I’ve been working on. That’s all for now, but I hope to add lyrics to it.”
She nodded in approvement, “I wish I had your talent. You guys make such beautiful music. My favourites always been ‘Secret Garden’ though. I don’t know why...I just though it was beautiful.”
Gackt smiled “Thank-you.”
“You’re welcome” she replied.
“Thins have been pretty dramatic haven’t they?” Gackt asked as he reached passed her to grab a guitar.
She smiled “Yeah, but that’s to be expected. It’s not like we wanted it this way, but no one wants their friend to die, no one wants to see another friend’s complete self destruction over it either.”
“He must have been a great guy” Gackt said as he tested the chords on the guitar.
Minami laughed “He was an awesome guy. He was always joking around. Laughing, I swear the only the people close to him saw his serious side” she chuckled “And when him and Kaiora were together it was like two half’s of a heart. They were constantly heckling everyone around them. I mean, they’d start on someone and it was like there was no ‘stop’ button. But he seemed like he was always happy, always satisfied with life.”
Gackt couldn’t help but pick up something in that explanation that seemed like another kind of sadness, but decided he’d had enough drama for two days. He played several chords as she watched “Well anyways” Minami stood up and stretched “I think I’ve taken enough of your practice time. I’ll head back and attempt to find my friends.”
As much as Gackt liked the talk they were having he was a perfectionist and testing the instruments was just one of his preconcert preparations. So he let her go with a wave. He then turned back to his guitar and continued to play. “Don’t even think about it.”
Miyavi’s arms dropped like bricks as his mouth closed shut “How did you know I was here when you didn’t hear her?”
“I know you?” Gackt replied, then he turned with a smile “plus I can smell your cologne.”
Miyavi raised his arm and sniffed “A small explosion” he explained.
“Whatever man, you stink” Gackt replied.
Miyavi walked over and picked up a guitar “play something?” he suggested.
Gackt nodded “Geisha?”
Miyavi agreed and began to play.
Sugizo opened the door to one of the rooms peering in, scanning over the faces and then closing the door to move on “Where the hell did he go?” he asked himself “that kid should have a homing beacon put on him.”
He opened one door and several brooms fell on him, the next few minutes were hectic as he attempted to put two mops, and a broom, in the closet without having a long window squeegee fall out, not to mention the bucket and other contents that seemed to follow. Two hands suddenly appeared and he turned to see Angel attempting to help him, “On the count of three just push everything in” she told him “One...two...three!”
He pushed everything back into the closet and just when he’d pulled back she slammed the door , she laughed “I saw you were having some problems” she said.
“Thanks for your help” he smiled.
“Are you looking for someone? Something tells me you expected more than cleaning products on the other side of that room.”
He nodded “I’ve been looking for Miyavi but I can’t find him.”
Angel gave him a confused look “Miyavi’s on stage” she said “Yoshiki’s looking for you.”
Sugizo’s eyes bulged for a second before he shook his head “I swear, Yoshiki’s going to kill me one of these days for something Miyavi did.”
Angel laughed “I hear you. He seems like the kind of guy that’s hard to hold down.”
“That’s the tip of the iceberg that is Miyavi. In any case I’d better get onstage before Yoshiki stabs me with one of his drumsticks.”
He then walked away quickly, and Angel watched him ‘Yum’ entered her mind ‘Hate to see you go, but love to watch you leave’ she turned and cried out to see Kaiora standing there staring at her. “K-Kaiora?” Angel asked “What are you doing here?” she looked down both halls “Where’s Jo?”
“Are they going to practice?” Kaiora asked ignoring her question.
Angel nodded “Yeah, they’re just heading to play now.”
“Can we watch?”
Angel took a glance past her “Maybe we should go get Jo.”
Kaiora then began walking in the direction Sugizo had. Angel hurried after her “Is Jo this way?”
Kaiora didn’t reply. “Kaiora?” she asked.
Kaiora made no response, she only continued walking. Angel had no choice but to follow her. She couldn’t very well stop her as Kaiora was quite capable of hurting both of them badly.
But at the same time Kaiora did take the time to relieve herself of their friend and go on a search for the main stage so she could watch the band play. A surge of excitement raced through her as she thought of the reaction watching her favourite band play.
