"She’s like grace from the earth
When you’re all tuckered out and tame."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hey," Carrie smiled as she noticed Kelly walking towards her where she stood in the middle of the hall in one of the office buildings for the hospital.
"Hey," Kelly smiled back. "I didn't know you were gonna be here."
"Yea. I got a call a couple days ago. Do you know what's it about?"
"No," she shook her head. "I was afraid I had broken some rule or something, but since you're here I can rule that out."
Carrie laughed, "And what's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing," Kelly smiled.
"So you've gotten into trouble before?"
"I sprung a couple of kids out for lunch one day," she explained. "But I had their nurse with me, so it's not like it was dangerous or anything. I just didn't have their parents permission."
"I never really asked you how you got involved over here in the first place."
"Oh, well, I just had some free time and thought it would be fun."
"You know most people in the industry wouldn't see volunteering in their spare time as something to do for fun."
"And most people in the industry are also douche bags," Kelly smiled.
Carrie tried to stifle a laugh, "Very true."
"What about you?"
"Am I douche bag?"
"You know," Kelly laughed. "I never thought I'd live to see the day when Carrie Underwood said the phrase douche bag."
"I'm not such a goody to shoes, you know?" she crossed her arms.
"I never said there was anything wrong with it," Kelly replied, her eyes dancing with amusement. "It's nice to meet somebody with a good head on their shoulders and a heart."
"Thanks," she smiled, feeling her cheeks burning slightly.
"So, what I meant was, how'd you get involved here?"
"Oh, when I was younger, one of my cousins was diagnosed with cancer. She came here off and on growing up," she explained.
"Oh, wow. I'm sorry. How is she? I mean, is she..."
"Yea, she's ok now. Cancer free," Carrie smiled. "But I had come here a few times to visit her, and I always just found it such an amazing place. So when the opportunity came up to do some work here, I jumped on it."
"Hi girls," a man in his early thirties said, opening the door the two of them were standing outside of. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but if you're ready to come in..."
"Oh yea, sure," Kelly replied, walking into the office with Carrie right behind her.
"First I want to thank you both so much for all that you've done already with the children here," he said, walking to the other side of the desk. "I'm Michael, by the way," he smiled, extending his hand.
"Kelly," she shook it.
"Carrie," the country singer smiled, doing the same.
"Well, I kind of knew that, but it's nice to meet you two formally," he laughed slightly as the three of them sat down. "So, I am the president of the publicity division for the charity side of St. Jude's," he explained. "And I called you two here because I would like to discuss having you two be a part of our upcoming campaign."
The two girls' eyes lit up.
"Is that something that you two might be interested in?"
"Yea buddy."
"Yes sir."
"Well, the past few years we've had some very generous celebrities give up their time to help get the word out," Michael explained. "But this time, along with our traditional campaign, we also want to take a different approach. You see, we've found, and I'm sure you've noticed this as well, that there is a certain age group out there that isn't exactly the most gung-ho when it comes to stuff like this."
"Ours," Carrie said with a frown.
"But I really don't think that's their fault," Kelly replied. "I mean, I've met tons of teens and people our age that are willing to give. They just don't know how or where or what."
"True," Carrie nodded.
"Exactly," he smiled, happy that they were all on the same page. "So we were thinking that along with the typical heart-wrenching ads, we would also try something new. Have you two do a couple photo shoots, a commercial, a few appearances, and," he looked at the two of them nervously, "a concert?"
Kelly bit her lip thinking about it. The next few months were set aside for vacation and for her to get a good start for her next album.
"I think it's a great idea," she smiled. "I'd love to be involved with it."
"Yea," Carrie nodded in agreement. "Anything I can do to help, I'm game."
"Alright, well, this makes my job a whole lot easier," he smiled. "Thank you two so much, and I guess we'll be in touch."
"So," Carrie said as they walked out of the hospital. "I was thinking of going to lunch. Care to join me?"
"Um, yea, sure," Kelly smiled.
She guessed that could have been considered their first unofficial date, although they weren't really a couple until long after then, but looking back now, all the signs were there for how she truly felt about her. From the way her heart melted when she first saw her with the children jumping all over her, to the way her stomach did a summersault every time she flashed that brilliant smile of hers. The signs were there, she was just too caught up in her own problems to notice them.
"So how do you like it in Nashville?" Carrie asked as they waited for their food to arrive.
"Well it's no Texas," she replied with a smile. "But it's definitely a great place."
"You're working on your new album here?"
"Um, yea. We already have the songs written and recorded save for anything I write in the next couple months. I just have to add some backgrounds, and we're bringing in strings for a couple songs."
"But why here? Why not L.A.?"
"The pace here is just much slower," Kelly explained. "And the people here are great, and there's just such a history about the place. I love it."
"Is it gonna be a country album?"
"You sure ask a lot of questions," Kelly smiled. "I feel like I'm doing an interview."
"Oh God, I'm sorry," Carrie apologized, blushing slightly. "I'm just not used to this."
"Eating?"
"No, I mean. Ok, my best friends are my personal assistant and my publicist. So, I guess I'm just used to talk always revolving around work."
"It's fine," Kelly shrugged. "I talk a lot, so feel free to ask away."
"So country album?"
"You're scared of a little competition?" she smirked.
"No, I mean, I was just wondering--"
"I'm just joking," she laughed. "But there are a couple songs that are definitely county influenced, but it's still a pop record."
"What about the whole thing with Clive--"
"Aww," Kelly frowned. "And I was having such a great time. Way to make a girl lose her appetite."
Carrie looked at her nervously.
"What's up?"
"You're really having a great time?" she asked shyly.
Kelly smiled, "Well, yea. Good food. Good company. What's there not to like?"
"So, um, about this charity thing," she said, changing the subject, but unable to hide the smile that was playing on her lips.
Kelly watched her curiously, "Yea, it sounds like it's gonna be a lot of fun."
"What about scheduling and stuff?"
"Well, the next couple months are just a mixture of vacation and studio time for me, so we can just work around your schedule."
"You sure? Cause I don't want you to have to miss your vacation."
"It's fine," Kelly assured her. "I volunteered for this. Besides, like I said, it's gonna be a lot of fun."
"So, thanks for lunch," Kelly said as they pulled up next to her car that was still in the hospital's parking lot.
"Anytime," Carrie smiled.
Kelly couldn't help but smile back. She dug for a pen in her purse before taking Carrie's hand and writing her number on her palm, "Give me a call if you hear anything more about the campaign, or if you just want to talk about something other than work."
"Thanks," she laughed softly, looking down at her hand.
