I woke up the next morning by someone crawling into bed with me, of course I for one short confused moment thought it was Frank, but soon I felt the familiar arms of my brother wrap around me and I smiled.
“Good morning Gerard.” I said into his hair as I let my arms embrace him as well. I could hear him giggle and I blew some air on his neck.
“Tickles, Mikey.” He cried and I laughed. Suddenly I heard Frank moving around on his mattress. I sat up, and Gerard scrambled away from me slowly and sat at the foot of my bed instead.
“Hey guys.” Frank said while running his hands through his messy bed hair. I replied with a hi, but I watched as Gerard nervously looked down on Frank.
I had told Gerard about Frank coming over, but sometimes he forgets things.
“Mikey,” Gerard mumbled and pointed towards Frank. “Mikey!” He said, sharper this time, still with his finger pointing towards Frank, who had now realised how freaked out Gerard looked, and he himself was pale.
“Gerard, remember I told you about my friend Frank staying over this weekend. He has nowhere else to go, so he’s staying here, okay?” I said gently and motioned for Frank that he could get up if he wanted to.
“Yes, remember.” Gerard said and started fiddling with the hem of his pyjama top. He looked so much like a child, in his cowboy pyjamas.
“Well, say hi to Frank.” I encouraged my brother as I got off the bed and started pulling on a pair of jeans.
“Hello Frank.” Gerard said and looked directly at him. Normally he had some issues with looking directly at people, simply because he didn’t remember that’s what you’re supposed to do when talking to someone. Frank gave Gerard an awkward wave before he too got up to put pants on.
Bowl. Cereal. Milk. Spoon.
Just the way he needs it to be done. I put the bowl of cereal in front of my brother as I went back to the counter to get some coffee for myself and Frank. Gerard started eating slowly, as his eyes darted from his breakfast, to me, to Frank, and back again.
He was over all having a very good morning, and he had even gotten dressed himself. He had only needed help when he got stuck in his t-shirt, and since I had been in the shower when he got dressed, Frank had been the one to help him. I had heard Gerard’s whimpers from the bathroom, and then I heard Frank offering to help him. Normally Gerard would shout ‘No’ or ‘Don’t like you’ when people he doesn’t know offer him help. But I think something about Frank mesmerised Gerard.
Probably his appearance, or the way he didn’t seem to think Gerard was different. People think that Gerard doesn’t know what you think about him, but he does. He knows instantly if you think he’s a freak, and then he’ll back away. He can also sense when there’s someone he can trust. And apparently, he feels that Frank is someone he can trust.
“So Gerard, what music do you like?” I heard Frank hesitantly ask my brother. Sure he didn’t think my brother was a retard, but he still wasn’t completely sure what to say around him. I waited for my brothers response, curious as to how he would react to Franks question.
“I like the Misfits Frank, what kind of music do you like?” Gerard said and I couldn’t help but snort at the surprised look on Franks face. Oh yes, my brother can when he wants to, and when he has a good day. When we were younger I used to envy Gerard, because he could talk in a very fancy way when he was in a good mood.
“Oh, yeah, uh, I like them too.” Frank said and blushed. I smirked at him as I put his coffee in front of him and he smiled sheepishly back at me. I took my cup and sat down next too Frank, who was sitting opposite of Gerard.
“I quite like their lyrics, they is good,” Gerard stopped for a second and looked thoughtful. “they ARE good.” He tried again, and when he realised he had gotten it right he smiled to himself.
“What do you want to do today Gerard?” I asked as I zipped the heavenly burning liquid. He thought for a moment, then grinned from ear to ear.
“I want to go out.” He said but I shook my head.
“Gee, not when mom’s not home.” I said and his smile vanished quickly and I knew he was growing upset.
“Mikey, not been out, in all week, and I don’t like it!” He said and pushed his bowl of almost finished cereal away, causing the milk to almost run over the edge.
I didn’t answer, as I knew nothing I said could make him feel better. I was tired, and I didn’t want to have to go out and keep a watchful eye on Gerard all day.
“Mikey, listen, talk!” Gerard raised his voice and banged one of his hands against the table. Suddenly Frank piped up.
“C’mon Mikey, we’ll look after him, we’ll eh, go to the zoo?” He gave Gerard a questioning look, and Gerard’s angry expression disappeared and instead a smile broke out.
“Yes, we’ll go to the zoo, and I’ll be really good. Mikey, I can be good.” Gerard said sternly, as if to say ‘you know I can be good, give me chance’.
And since now it seemed both Gerard and Frank were against me I decided that what the hell, how wrong could it go?
Gerard had promised to go see his psychiatrist the following week as a thanks to me for taking him to the zoo. I just smiled and told him to thank Frank. Which Gerard did - with a hug.
At first I had to cough to cover the laughter that threatened to erupt when I saw Frank’s surprised face as Gerard suddenly threw his arms around him. But then when Frank had gotten a few seconds to realise what was going on, and he had started hugging Gerard back I had no problem keeping my laughter in.
Gerard never did that, hugged someone like that. I made a mental note to tell mum and Gerard’s therapist. Things like this meant that Gerard was better, and everything he did that was good, needed to be remembered, talked about and rewarded.
“Okay Gee, lets go.” Frank said as Gerard finally let go of him.
What an interesting day this would be.
Frank’s POV.
Sometimes it’s so easy to forget that Gerard is sick.
Sometimes it’s so easy to just see him as Mikey’s goofy older brother.
Like when I bought him some popcorn, and he started tossing them at Mikey who was trying to tie his shoelace. I couldn‘t help but laugh at the amused smile on Gerard‘s face.
It’s just not fair. Gerard doesn’t deserve to be treated like a freak. He’s not a freak, he’s just different. He’s just… unique. Who doesn’t want to be unique?
A warm feeling spread through my body as Mikey finally finished tying his shoelace and then started chasing a laughing Gerard around a big tree.
“Mikey, don’t be nasty, I was only playing.” Gerard choked out through his laughing fits. Mikey looked so funny, with his glasses crooked and with a piece of popcorn stuck in his hair.
“I know Gerard, and now I’m going to play back.” Mikey said and threw a handful of grass towards Gerard.
Suddenly Gerard stopped laughing, and stopped moving. Mikey instantly stopped as well, not sure of why Gerard had stopped. I felt my heart beating faster, not sure what was going on. By now I had learned that Gerard could go from happy to angry in just a matter of seconds.
“Mikey, why can’t I be normal?”
Mikey’s POV
It hurt so much, hearing Gerard ask me that. He had asked me so many times before, and I never knew how to answer it. This time, I didn’t have to because Frank answered instead.
“Gerard, you don’t want to be normal, normal is boring. Normal is overrated. Unique is the way to be.” Frank said lightly and gave Gerard a reassuring smile.
And as quickly as his smile had vanished it once more pulled Gerard’s lips upwards at the sides.
“I’m unique.” He said to Frank, and pointed at himself as he said it.
“Yes, yes you are, and that’s very good.” Frank said and soon the moment was over.
Once more were we walking through the zoo while looking at the animals. As soon as I could I pulled Frank a bit to the side as Gerard was busy studying the lions.
“Thank you Frank, for saying that to Gerard.” I said and he shrugged.
“No problem, it’s true anyway.” He said and I nodded.
I knew it was true, Gerard was unique, and that wasn’t a bad thing. Sure he might never have a normal job and live like everyone else, but I knew it would get better. After all, some people with AS had their own apartment, a job, a girlfriend/boyfriend and a life.
That’s all I ever want Gerard to have, a life on his own.
A/N:
When Gerard said “Mikey, listen, talk!” he meant something along the lines of:
"Mikey, can you hear that I'm talking to you, I want you to answer!"
