‘TURBONATER! I NEED WATER STAT!’ Shouted Jade jokingly after coming back into the backstage area after being interviewed more or less straight after her feet had left the stage. She had even sadly missed her father’s departure because of Metal Hammer magazine asking her everything under the sun in what was supposed to be a 20 minute interview. Jade was hot and bothered to say the least, and ‘The Turbonater’ as he was lovingly referred to knew it only too well.
‘Over the head mate?’ asked Remi, the only metal loving Sikh she had ever seen in her life who worked as a roadie for them.
‘If you please dude’ replied Jade as Remi began to tip the water over her hair.
‘If I never find the perfect guy I’m marrying you Remi’ she said as she pushed the water through her hair and took the drink he had premixed for her out of his hand. He sensed she would need it after being kept in an interview for 45 minutes, especially since speaking to journalists who often misquoted her was not her favourite thing.
‘I’ll hold you to that’ said Remi with a smile before excusing himself to go and help disassemble the stage rig and pack away all of Hellbound’s equipment. He called back over his shoulder that ‘her girls’ were all on the bus drinking away already so with that off to the bus (and the massive tour rider) went Jade, in search of another JD and coke to replace the one her thirsty mouth had just drained. When she arrived at the bus she found a
small gathering with much alcohol flowing.
‘Well thanks for waiting for me!’ Said Jade in a playful sarcastic tone as she walked into the lounge area at the rear of the bus, and almost immediately had a bottle of Jack thrust in her direction by Jo.
‘It’s okay, we didn’t wait for the other half of our band either, fuck knows where they’re at!’ said Corey, taking her hand to retrieve the plastic cup she carried and tong a huge lump of ice in out of the nearby bucket. She thanked him and poured in some Jack followed by a splash of coke and then sat down next to him and Jo, noting who was present as she did. There was her, Jo, Charlotte, Jen and Jess, and then from Slipknot there was Corey obviously, Chris, Joey, Jim and Sid. She noticed Jim look at her and then look away as soon as she sat down, but as usual thought nothing of it. She still couldn’t get used to the fact that many a person thought she was the most gorgeous creature of beauty they had ever seen, or that for the last five years she had topped various ‘hottest woman in metal’ polls, she still thought she was fairy average when in truth, she was simply striking.
For the next hour the drinks flowed as freely as the chatter, the gathered members all getting to know each other better as they bonded over their common shared interest and profession; music. The girls found the guys to be great, very similar to them in their sense of fun and sense of humour which made for some great first night on tour bonding. It was one of those set ups where each person could tell that the coming tour would be brilliant fun if nothing else. Jade was enjoying listening to a story that Corey was telling her about his misspent youth when her focus took her away from his words for a few moments.
‘Whatcha lost there buddy?’ asked Corey, pausing in his story telling as he looked at Jade moving things and searching the surrounding seats. ‘Woah easy girl I’m a married man!’ he then jokingly exclaimed as Jade’s hand tucked slightly under his ass cheek as she searched for whatever it was she had lost.
‘Has anyone seen a pack of silver zig zags?’ said Jade, searching for the rolling papers she intended to tip the large pile of ground up weed on a tray on her lap into.
‘Oooooh sorry babe I think I used your last two, but have a toke on this to make up for it’ said Sid from his position sat on a large cushion near her feet.
‘Ahhhh no worries, I’ll take a walk to the 24 hour gas station and get some more in a bit, ain’t far’ said Jade, taking a drag of the joint and holding it back in her lungs until her head buzzed slightly. After passing the joint on to Jo (bypassing non weed smoker Corey) Jade got herself up and pulled her boots back on, then located her wallet from her bag in one of the many storage draws on the bus and went to leave.
‘Hon don’t go by yourself, I’ll come’ said Charlotte, making an attempt to get up off her highly stoned arse.
‘By the time you’ve even got your shoes on I’ll be back! Don’t worry it’s only a ten minute walk so I’ll be back in no time. See you all in a little while’ she replied, turning on her heel and exiting the lounge door, walking down the narrow aisle of the bus and out of the door to the side. It wasn’t until she was half way across the grass that she heard someone behind her jogging to keep up. ‘Charlotte must have rocked propelled herself out of her seat’ thought Jade until the figure caught up with her and she realized it wasn’t Charlotte at all, it was Jim.
‘Couldn’t let you go by yourself, LA is dangerous for women walking alone at this hour’ he said casually.
‘No offence, but A- I live here and B- I am capable of looking after myself. But thanks anyway’ said Jade.
‘Oh, do you want me to go back?’ said Jim, slightly put out by her crisp tone.
‘No it’s fine, tag along by all means’ she said, realizing she had snapped slightly and softening her tone and smiling up at him. It was then that she realized just how gorgeous he was up close. His features were heavy set, yet he had chiselled like cheekbones and a wide smile that reached his eyes, a gorgeous hazel brown colour that she could make out even in the closing darkness. He was very handsome, and his height made him all the more better. Jade liked tall men and at 6 ft 6 it was one of the first things she noticed about him. She noted imperfections too which she liked, his nose being a little on the large side and his dyed black hair sprouting light brown roots, a small scar on his chin, it all added up. She was a woman who loved flaws and scars, they made a person who they were she thought.
As they walked, they continued to chat between themselves, and another thing Jade noticed was just how comfortable she felt talking to him. He was polite and chatty, asked questions out of natural curiosity rather than being plain intrusive or nosey, and was very interesting to listen to also. Just as they were arriving back at the bus their talk had progressed to them sharing conversation about their lives until that point, and she had to admit she liked what she heard, even though there was no way she was interested in him romantically. Another relationship was what she did not need right at that point in her life. Entering the bus to silence they both looked at each other curiously over the lack of the drunken banter they had left, and when they entered the lounge not a soul was to be found. But they had left a note-
‘Gone to the Jam Room, meet us there!’ it said in Jen’s loopy handwriting. The Jam Room was their local haunt in down town LA.
‘Nah, I think I’ll stay here, I can give you directions if you wanna head down with your boys?’ said Jade as Jim took a seat and picked up a fresh bottle of beer, removing the cap with his teeth which made Jade’s heart skip a beat; there was something seriously sexy about people who did that she had always found.
‘I’m quite content where I am’ he answered simply, before continuing with his story. Jade sat back and listened to him tell the tale of how he was born in Iowa on October 2nd 1971 and had a happy childhood as the first and only male offspring of his liberal parents.
‘I remember when I first started dating, and I’d be there going up to my room with whichever girlfriend I was with at the time and my mom would be at the bottom of the stairs shouting ‘use a condom James!’ He laughed in a big guffaw as Jade nearly choked on her drink.
‘See my mom and dad are cool, but hell they weren’t that cool with me and boyfriends! My dad had this great line he’d say to boyfriends when I wasn’t listening- ‘Son only one pair of balls is going up those stairs tonight, and they ain’t yours’ said Jade as Jim erupted.
‘Your dad sounds cool; he was the guy in the black shirt standing by Remi in the wings wasn’t he? Asked Jim once his laughter had subsided.
‘Yup, that’s my pops’ said Jade proudly, smiling as she remembered his smile up at her as she stood on stage.
‘I erm, I kinda read in an interview a year or so back what happened to you when you were little. I was so sorry for you, even though I didn’t and still don’t know you reading that shit really hit me’ said Jim kindly, giving her forearm a little squeeze. She then surprised herself by opening up about it right away, and even stumbled over her first few words she was so shocked that she felt comfortable enough to discuss it with him; a relative stranger, but one she had an intuitive feeling wouldn’t say a word to anyone about things she may or may not tell him.
‘It was frightening, I’m glad I can only remember flashes of it. I was only three when it happened you see’ said Jade quietly as she licked the end of the joint she had just rolled and sealed the sticky side, lighting up immediately. He shook his head and looked honestly devastated for her.
‘I’m glad you both came out the other side okay, shit, your poor mother. She must have been too scared to leave him right?’ said Jim. Jade nodded in reply, then let out a grunt from her nose as she tried not to cough through a huge lung full of smoke. It was just the thing to break the slightly sombre tone.
‘Easy now girl!’ he laughed as Jade finally relented and let out a barking cough. He picked up her drink and passed it to her as she continued to cough, then patted her back. Right there something else struck her; how attentive he was.
‘Thanks’ she managed finally after her coughing fit had subsided. She drained her glass and filled another with the usual contents of JD and the most meagre splash of coke, and then sat back again and passed the joint to Jim.
‘So, you know how the media, bands, roadies and the like talk so I probably got misinformed somewhere along the lines, but what happened with you and Phil? If I’m being intrusive just tell me to shut the fuck up’ he said lightly, taking a drag of the joint and exhaling it from his nose as he shifted in his seat. The Phil he was referring to was Phil Anselmo, lead singer of Pantera and Jade’s ex boyfriend.
‘Well, ain’t that a question’ began Jade, taking a large gulp of her drink.
‘Like I say, it isn’t compulsory to answer’ said Jim.
‘No, no. I will. Something tells me that whatever I tell you, you’ll keep it under your hat. Or should that be mask?’ she laughed.
‘Yeah it should be! But seriously, you must be a good judge of character because I’m not a blabbermouth, I leave that to Joey’ said Jim, smiling at her and liking how she already ‘got’ the type of person he was.
‘Well, let’s just say the incident in Dallas in ’96 wasn’t the end of him using heroin’ began Jade, referring to the time when Phil had OD’d back stage at a gig in Dallas, sending Jade, his 22 year old girlfriend of four months into a blind panic as well as everyone else present. ‘He got out of it totally and didn’t use again for a few months until one day he started again. And that was the day I started too’ said Jade, Jim nodding and listening intently.
‘He used for his back pain, refused to go and let a doctor look at it and also I think that underneath he was terribly depressed. He’d tell you nothing but contrary to that but I was with him for three years, I know him better than some of his own band do’ said Jade.
‘So why did you start?’ asked Jim, handing her the joint back.
‘Simply because I like to go crazy on tour, usually I only smoke weed and drink off tour but when I get on that bus I just turn into a bit of a hellion!’ she began. ‘No really, you want the truth? The truth is I used because I wanted to , it felt good and sex on heroin was just amazing so he’d shoot up to get out of pain and id smoke it and fucking dive on him! That was the real reason, and the reason we broke up was because neither of us were going to get ourselves straight and off it while we were together, we’d just keep being a bad influence on each other so in the end the thing that had to give was us. It was sad, we walked away still loving each other but it’s all past. I’ve seen him since and we’ve sat down and had a big talk and agreed to always be there for each other as friends, but being in a relationship just wouldn’t work’ said Jade, flicking the ash from her joint absently onto the carpeted floor of the bus.
‘It’s sad, you two seemed to make a nice couple but if you’re both happy, clean and have moved on then it sounds like it really was the best thing. Stands to make a whole legion of men out there happy that you are single again!’ he commented.
‘Yeah, not that anyone stands a chance right now. I don’t want the hassle of a relationship right now’ said Jade.
‘You too huh? I just can’t be bothered with having a girlfriend, you’re right it’s too much hassle, especially when you are in a band and touring all of the damn time!’ said Jim.
‘So that’s where the groupies come in then! See now it’s my turn to ask if the rumours are true!’ said Jade with a grin. Jim looked a little embarrassed, then bit his lip and made a sucking sound as he contemplated his answer.
‘I was a bit of a slut for a few months, but I’ve calmed it down considerably since the beginning of the year. The guys make me sound a lot worse than I am!’ he said, draining his beer.
‘Hey there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sex, just as long as the person you’re doing it with is legal’ joked Jade, and then felt her jaw almost hit the floor when Jim suddenly looked very uneasy.
‘YOU DIDN’T?’ She cried, hand over her mouth.
‘Oh man!’ said Jim, pulling the black hood of his sweatshirt up over his head and pulling the toggles so the whole thing closed in around his face.
‘It was an honest mistake I swear it Jade!’ he began, resurfacing from his hood. ‘She said she was twenty, she damn sure looked twenty to my slightly drunk and horny eyes, so I took her on the bus and banged for the best part of two hours then found out afterward that not only was she a virgin who’s goal was to lose her cherry to a member of Slipknot, but a sixteen year old one at that. I did wonder why she was screaming so much’ said Jim as Jade laughed and laughed and laughed so hard tears came from her eyes.
‘Oh god poor you! I bet you were mortified! She said finally, sitting up and adjusting herself from where she had toppled back in her laughing fit.
‘Yeah, ever so slightly’ said Jim sarcastically. And with that the conversation went on, with the two new friends not even running out of steam as the sun came up and various members of both bands began to re appear before the long drive down to the next date on the tour; as Elvis once said, Viva Las Vegas.
A/N - Any reviews would be warmly welcomed, I'd like to know if the story so far will be enjoyed! And it is one that WILL be completed unlike so many other stories on here with promising starts that have sadly been abandoned! This you can count on! :D
