By now, you’ve heard about Darren’s disastrous flight to LA. It went from bad to worse, starting with the horrendous London traffic, rude people, bad customer service, and whatnot. On top of all that, he’s got one of those recurring sinus infections that make him feel miserable and grumpy. I really felt bad for him, but there was nothing much I could do but head home and hope the rest of his trip went more smoothly.
Just to de-stress from being stuck in traffic for an hour each way, and because the housekeeper was off on holiday for the week, I cleaned house. Something about the white noise of the vacuum cleaner seems to erase stressful thoughts from my mind. After that, I sat in our hot tub, listening to music, before putting in a few hours of work. I have to keep busy when my boy’s out of town, so I don’t just lie about, thinking about how much I miss him. I ate dinner, walked the dog, phoned my sister and a few friends. It was after midnight when Darren rang from his hotel room, completely frazzled. I listened sympathetically as he relayed the whole story. I hope he at least tries to get some sleep. Wait until he wakes up and finds out that our little DVD is at #1 on the UK charts. I went to bed smiling.
The next day, after I’d come in from Wally’s morning walk, I flipped on CNN while I made breakfast, and there was breaking news: an earthquake in California! My blood ran cold, and a wave of dread washed over me. Oh no! He’s got to be alright. He’s just got to! How will I ever live without...? Alright Richard, get a grip! Deep breath. That’s it. Sit down and wait. I held my breath until they finally explained that it was only moderate, and no one had been hurt, but until I heard from Darren himself, I couldn’t completely relax. The calls wouldn’t go through to his mobile. I spent an agonizing couple of hours pacing the floor until he finally got through to me. To say I was relieved would be a major understatement!
“Oh thank God! Please tell me you’re alright!”
“Honey, I’m fine, really. I didn’t even know if you’d heard yet.”
“Darren, I’ve been frantic for hours, trying to get through to you. I was fearing the worst.”
“No, Richard, you can relax. You haven’t lost me.”
He can hear the emotion in my voice. I’m trying not to cry.
“I don’t know what I’d have done if I had. I can’t live without you.”
He gets quiet on the other end of the line. I choke back a sob and hope he hasn’t heard it.
“Darren? Are you still there?”
“Yes. I’ve never heard you say that before, Richard. Wow.”
“Sorry if I’m being emotional.”
“It’s alright, Darling. I can’t live without you either.”
I lost it and was crying like a baby.
“Have you any idea what ran through my mind, Darren? I was terrified at the very thought of losing you! Promise me right now you’ll never leave me.”
“Richard, I promise. Now let me give you some great news: The DVD’s number one!”
“I know. Congratulations!”
“You did all the work. I just sang for two hours. You deserve the credit for this. You should be proud of yourself. I can’t wait for everyone to see the next one!”
“We did this together, Darren.”
“We make a pretty good team, don’t we, Darling?”
“Absolutely. How’s the writing going?”
“Great so far.”
“Listen Darren, I don’t mean to get all freaked out about the earthquake, but you need to understand something: After what I went through with my parents, the very idea of losing anyone else dear to me is more than I can bear.”
“I understand, Richard, trust me, I do.”
“I can’t lose you. I just....I can’t.”
“Baby, it’s okay. You’re not going to lose me.”
“Promise me that when you come home, you’ll give me the biggest hug you’ve ever given me.”
“Totally.”
“I will never take having you in my life for granted. I’m trying not to hold on too tightly, but stuff like this just triggers certain feelings in me.”
“I know, Darling, I know. I promise, I’ll squeeze you until you turn blue, and hold onto you all night. Just a few more days.”
“Do you want to know what YOUR dog did, Darren?”
He giggles.
“Oh no. What did he do?”
“He jumped up on your side of the bed, sniffed your pillow, and plopped his big head down on it, whimpering. He misses you.”
“Aww...is he nearby? Put me on speaker.”
“Hang on. Wally...it’s Daddy. C’mere. Okay Darren, he’s right here. Talk to him.”
“Hi Wally! Daddy misses you too.”
The dog starts barking and whining.
“Aw, I miss both my boys so much! I love you, Richard. I’ll call you tonight, yeah?”
“I love you so much, Darren. Go on then, and be careful!”
“I will. Buh bye.”
(sigh) I spent the remainder of the week working tirelessly on the films. I wanted to have a good chunk of them completed for D when he got home, just so he didn’t think I’d been lying about, watching telly all week. In fact, with the exception of the news, I hardly turned it on at all. One day flowed into the next for me. I just kept to a routine and tried not to think about how lonely I was without Darren. Fact is, I got bloody sick of talking to myself after two days, and having to make my own cups of tea. It hit me hardest at night, when I would lie in bed without him, exhausted, but having trouble falling asleep alone in our bed. He’d kill me, but I let the dog sleep on Darren’s side of the bed, just to have a warm, snoring body to throw my arm over. It’s better than cheating just to have someone to hold, isn’t it?
Finally, when I was contemplating hitting my head against the wall just to distract myself from how sad I really was without him, it was time to go get him at the airport. I picked up the clothes I had allowed to pile up on the floor, and changed the sheets, lest he figure out they were covered in dog hair. I was never so glad to make that miserable drive to the airport as I was today. Of course, I made sure I was presentable too. I want him to find me irresistible. I was actually singing along to the bloody radio in the car, completely unfazed by the traffic.
“You, Richard, are a lovesick fool!”
“ Yeah, and what of it?”, I challenge my reflection in the rear-view mirror.
I managed to find a parking spot not too far from the terminal, and stationed myself in front of the monitors, watching for his flight to land. The monitors update again. They’re on final approach! I push past the crowd and head for the gate, as close as I can get before the security checkpoint. My beloved will be in my arms in a matter of minutes!
My agonizing week without him is almost over. I glance at the monitor. They’ve landed. For some reason, I’m replaying our wedding in my mind. Holding his hand, looking into his blue eyes. I twirl my ring around my finger, smiling.
“Richard!”
I snap out of my daydream and fling myself into Darren’s arms.
“I’ve missed you so much, Darren!”
“I’ve missed you too, Darling. Too many people here. I’ll kiss you in the car.”
We collect his bag. He looks exhausted, poor thing!
“Let’s get you home, then.”
Once we get situated in the car, I turn to him.
“Now, may I have my kiss?”
He smiles.
“Of course. Mmm....I’ve missed that.”
“Me too. It was so hard to sleep without you.”
“Sleep? What’s that?”
“I was planning on making you a nice dinner, but that can wait.”
“I’m going to try and stay up at least until 9, just to get back into a normal pattern. (yawn) I’m so schleepy.”
“Aw, I know, Luv,” I reply, stroking his face.
Fortunately, afternoon traffic wasn’t bad, and we were home in an hour. Wally nearly pissed himself with excitement. Darren got down on the floor to cuddle with him.
“Not to break up this happy reunion, but shall I unpack your bag, D? Is there anything in here I shouldn’t see?”
“Um..no, go ahead. I got some stuff for the kids. Didn’t really see anything that suited you this time, though.”
“Darren, it’s August! I don’t even want to think about Christmas shopping!”
I started a load of washing, and threw the suitcase at the foot of the stairs. First one to go up can take it upstairs.
“Have you eaten at all?”
“Yeah, one little bag of peanuts in 6 hours.”
“What can I make you?”
He yawns.
“Any soup in the pantry?”
“Hang on, I’ll look. Chicken noodle, beef barley, or split pea with ham?”
“Chicken noodle.”
“Coming right up. Sure you wouldn’t like a sandwich or salad with it?”
“Nah. Maybe later, thanks Darlin’. Love you.”
“Love you too.”
“Help me up.”
I take his hand and drag him up off the floor.
“Loo’s that way, Luv, incase you’ve forgotten. I’ll come check on you in five minutes if you’re not out. Can’t have you falling asleep on the toilet now, can we?”
He chuckles and gives me a pat on the bum as he walks past me. I’m at the stove, stirring the soup. Yes, it’d be faster in the microwave, but I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to cooking. I don’t use the microwave unless I absolutely have to. Darren thinks I’m crazy, but I swear it makes food taste metallic. I prefer my food without radiation, thank you.
I hear Darren’s mobile ringing from down the hall. Jeez, can’t they leave him alone for five minutes?! He’s a walking zombie, for heaven’s sake! It’s his sister, just checking that he arrived home safely. He returns to the kitchen, talking on his phone.
“Yeah, we’re home. Rich is fixing me something to eat. (yawn) I’m trying to stay awake a few more hours.”
I serve him his soup, and sit with him as he eats it, holding his free hand.
“After you’ve eaten, I need to show you the work I’ve done on the films. Two more are done, if you approve this latest batch of work.”
I just sit gazing at him, delighted to have him home. He leans in and kisses me. I smile.
“You taste like chicken.”
“Could be worse. Is there any more soup left?”
I get up and pour the rest into his bowl.
“You’re sure I can’t make you something more to eat?”
“Positive, but thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Sweetheart,” I reply, standing beside him and running my fingers through his hair.
“I’ve missed your touch”, he whispers.
“I’ve missed yours.”
He finishes his soup.
“I’m gonna take a shower. Might help me wake up a bit.”
“Alright Luv, I’ll be in the office.”
“Oh yeah, show me the stuff you wanted me to see before I go up.”
He follows me to my desk.
“Sit”, I order him, offering him my chair. I open the files and watch his reaction. He says nothing.
“Darren? What do you think?”
“Can you play that clip again?”
He’s looking back and forth between me and the screen.
“Unbelievable. You’re a fucking genius!”
“I take it you like it then?”
“It’s brilliant!”
I show him the next one.
“Trying to get this one right gave me fits, and I think I finally got it, but not before calling half a dozen or so colleagues for every technical trick they knew to pull this off.”
“Oh. My. God. You did it!”
“Well, I ...yeah, I guess I did.”
“I’ve got goose bumps, Richard. You do realize that this is going to break your career wide open. Everyone’ll be lining up at your door.”
“And this is a bad thing how?”
He stands up and pulls me close.
“It’s a wonderful thing. I’m going to take a shower, Mr. Genius. Love you.”
“Love you too, Mr. Poptart.”
He heads upstairs, and I keep working. I lost track of time, because the next time I glanced at my watch, an hour had passed. He couldn’t have been in the shower the whole time. I’ll bet he’s fallen asleep. I quietly walk upstairs, and sure enough, he’s out. I turn off the bedroom light and shut the door. How I’d love to get in bed with him, but it’s only 5:30. I’ll let him sleep. Poor boy’s exhausted. Guess I’ll just watch telly with the dog. I ended up falling asleep on the couch. Darren came down at midnight.
“Richard? Honey?”
“Huh? What time is it, Darren?”
“Midnight.”
I groan. Then I remember.
“I came up to check on you after your shower. You never came back down.”
“I’m sorry Darling. I just crashed.”
“I know. I let you sleep. I came back down and watched telly with Wally.”
“Have you eaten?”
“No.”
“I’m hungry. Wanna share a sandwich?”, he asks.
“Yeah, we could do that.”
I sit up.
“Feel any better?”, I ask him.
“Yeah, but my body’s all confused. It feels like morning to me. Stay there, I’ll make it.”
So he whips up a sandwich of whatever’s left in the lunch meat drawer, and we split it, sitting on the couch. I really feel like going to bed, but not on a full stomach, so we snuggle on the couch and watch the last half of an old movie. I’m happy just to breathe in his scent and feel his arms around me.
“Let’s go upstairs, Luv. I’ll bet you could sleep some more.”
He yawns.
“Even if I can’t, I’m still going to hold you. It was a long week without My Lovely.”
“I was so lonely without you, Darren.”
“I know, Sweetie. I was too.”
We walk upstairs with our arms around each other.
“I feel like half a person when you’re not here.”
“It’s funny you should say that, Richard, because I was saying to Rick that I felt like I left half of myself at home. My heart was with you, Richard. And Wally. Back here.”
“I know. I felt you reaching for us, and I reached back. What kills me is not having you here, physically, to touch. I know our hearts are connected and all that, but mine just aches for you when I can’t hold you. I’m a hands-on guy.”
He smiles.
“Would you like your hands on me right now?”
“Is that an offer, Mr. Hayes?”
“Would you like it to be, Mr. Cullen?”
“I thought you were too tired?”
“Maybe a little lovin’ is exactly what I need. Come on. Love me up.”
I giggle and dive under the covers.
“I’ll love you up. And down.”
“Mmm yeah, I like that ‘up and down’ action, Baby”, he purrs.
“I know you do.”
“Ooh...gimme that right hand, Richard.”
“Hmmm...I’ll give you mine if you give me yours?”
“Deal!”
We got each other off just by stroking each other and kissing. And then we just melted into each other and fell asleep. And all was right with the world.
