Carrie walked out of the classroom with her head spinning. Physics definitely wasn't one of her best subjects.
"Howdy," Kelly greeted, standing up from where she was seated against the wall.
Carrie raised an eyebrow.
"What? Isn't that what we Texans are supposed to say?" she asked, leading the way to their last class.
"I guess," Carrie shrugged. "Did you're booksack break again?" she asked, noticing that the shorter girl wasn't carrying anything.
"Huh? Oh, no, we're just going back to the same room I was just in, so I left it there, so..." Kelly explained as they made their way down the stairs.
"You have choir twice?"
"No, just once. This past hour. I had a free hour, and my mom doesn't believe in letting me out of school early--she's a teacher--so I'm a student-aid for the choir director, and I help her out and stuff during last period."
"So, I take it you sing?"
"No, I just figured that I don't already make enough of a fool of myself on an everyday basis, why not add humiliation to the pot."
"You really are sarcastic," Carrie laughed.
"You should hear me when I'm not trying so hard to hold back," Kelly smiled.
"Don't hold back on my account."
Kelly shrugged, "I figured I owe you after the way I treated you this morning. But tomorrow, it's on like donkey kong."
Carrie giggled as they walked into the choir room.
"Welcome to choir a' la Burleson," Kelly motioned as she walked to the piano that was placed in the front of the room and sat on the stool. "Now, when class starts you're going to be asked to sing in order for you to be placed in the appropriate chair. Do you think you're ready for that? Or if you want, I can ask Mrs. Glenn to give you a day or so?"
"I think I'll be fine," Carrie nodded with assurance.
Kelly smiled. That was the closest thing to confidence she had seen in the girl from since the moment that she had met her, "You want to warm up?"
"Um, sure," she replied.
"Ok," Kelly said, going over a few keys, warming herself up on the instrument. "You want scales, or what?"
"That's fine."
"Which one?"
"Which one?" Carrie questioned. "Oh, I don't know like the names or anything. Just play the first note, and I'll be good."
Kelly laughed, "Alright."
She played a note, and Carrie immediately matched it. Kelly couldn't help but smile. It was obvious she was talented as she ran through the scale, Carrie following her perfectly.
"You're gonna have to work on dropping that twang," Kelly commented. "But you can definitely sing."
"What do you mean?" Carrie asked. "Yours is way worse than mine."
"When I'm talking," Kelly nodded. "But not when I'm singing...well, maybe if it's country or something where I can relax, but not classical. That's probably the first thing you'll learn in here."
"Classical?" Carrie frowned. "I just want to sing."
"This is Texas. People live and breathe this choir stuff here. It's definitely not the coolest or the most fun, but think of it this way: if you can sing this stuff, then you can pretty much sing anything."
Carrie's frowned deepened.
Kelly took her wrist, tugging her so that she sat beside her on the bench, "You'll be fine. You have a great voice. I mean, I could tell that from just one note, alright? Just relax. Look, we'll warm you up a bit more, ok?"
Carrie nodded, opening her mouth once more as Kelly started another scale.
The teacher walked in, and the various students who had been scattered about the room, warming up, hurried to their spots.
"B flat chord, Kelly," the teacher nodded, not really looking in her direction.
"What's a B flat chord?" Carrie whispered.
"The chord that is based on the B flat major scale," Kelly explained, pressing each key as she named them. "B flat, D, and F."
"Everybody now," the teacher smiled as the notes resounded throughout the room. The students sang out, matching the pitches.
"You ready?" Kelly asked softly.
"Yea," Carrie nodded.
"Um, Mrs. Glenn," Kelly said, getting the teacher's attention as she cut off the note.
"And who's this?" she asked with a smile.
"This is your new student," Kelly replied. "Remember, I told you last hour?"
"Oh, yes," she nodded. "Come on, stand up dear."
Carrie did as she was told.
"Well, I am Mrs. Cindy Glenn, and you are?"
"Carrie...Carrie Underwood."
"And how about you do a real quick scale for us so we can see where to place you, ok?"
"Yes ma'am," she nodded.
"Kelly?" Mrs. Glenn turned to her.
Kelly nodded, playing out one of the scales Carrie had warmed up to, smiling as she followed it with ease.
"That's quite a twang you got there," Mrs. Glenn laughed.
"Yes ma'am," Carrie's eyes fell.
"Oh don't worry about that," she smiled, guiding her to a spot to stand with the rest of the students. "You should've heard Kelly there when I first got a hold of her. Heck, you should still hear her now. Sometimes that thing just comes flying out, out of nowhere."
Carrie laughed as she caught Kelly's eye. The Texan just shrugged as she turned back to the piano.

"So, you're new here?" a girl asked as Carrie gathered her things. Kelly was still seated at the piano, lost in a song that she was playing.
"Um, yea, just moved here from Oklahoma," Carrie nodded.
"How do you know Kelly?"
"Oh, I just met her today," she shrugged. "She was asked to show me around."
The girl nodded.
"Hey, um, is she...Kelly, is she a good singer?"
The girl raised an eyebrow. She laughed slightly before turning away to join her friends.
Carrie frowned confusedly as she grabbed Kelly's bag for her, bringing it over to the piano, "Hey."
Kelly nodded, lost in thought as she played a couple bars over and over. She bit her lip as she stared down at the piano before a smile graced her features, and she played it over again, this time changing a single chord, making it flow a lot smoother. Carrie found herself smiling as she watched the Texan fully focused on one thing for the first time since they had met.
"That's really pretty," Carrie commented. "What is it?"
"Oh," Kelly blushed, pushing away from the piano and picking up her booksack. "Just something I wrote. No big deal."
"You wrote that?"
"Trust me. It's nothing special."
"I asked one of the girls if you could sing well," Carrie admitted as they walked out of the classroom together.
"Oh yea?"
"Yea," she nodded, following Kelly to her locker where she stopped briefly to pull out what she would need for that night before moving on to Carrie's locker.
"What she said?" Kelly asked curiously.
"Nothing," she wrinkled her brow. "She just kinda looked at me funny."
Kelly laughed, opening Carrie's locker for her once more, "I can sing okay. Oh shoot, one sec."
Carrie watched as Kelly raced off in the direction of her locker, only to return, once more barefoot. Carrie gave her a curious look.
"I'll never remember to bring them back," Kelly shrugged. "So the next time this happens, I'd end up shoeless for the entire day."
Carrie shook her head, "If nothing else, this day has definitely been interesting."
"Good," Kelly smiled as they walked out of the building. "So, do you need me to show you where the buses are, or..."
"No, I have a car," she replied.
"Ok, well, then I guess I'll see you tomorrow. That is, if you don't decide to run off back to Oklahoma."
"Where're you going?"
"I walk," Kelly said, pointing over her shoulder. "It's not that far."
"You don't have shoes on," Carrie reminded.
"I didn't this morning either."
"Come on, I'll take you," Carrie said, waving her to the direction of the parking lot.
"No, it's fine. I do this all time. Besides, I don't want you to have to go out of your way."
"You just said it wasn't far," Carrie pointed out.
Kelly frowned, realizing that she was trapped, "Alright."
