The trip up was nerve racking. With every creak from the hull they all grew a little tenser and Jimmy could feel his lungs starting to burn from the lack of fresh air. If they didn’t reach the surface soon they were going to suffocate. He could feel Johnny struggling to keep his breathing calm in the complete darkness. The outer lights had been turned off to conserve power so now they sat in a darkness so complete James wasn’t sure if his eyes were open or closed.
Finally the murk began to lift and the muted sunlight began to color the water, then they could see the trough of the waves and their frothy caps and they were above the water.
“Zack?” Matt was already moving to the doors.
“Engines are at ten percent, we’ll have to drop the shield if we want them to hold.” His voice was still quiet and calm. Matt nodded and the screens shimmered as the shield dissolved.
“Ready?” Matt asked. The others secured their packs and one by one nodded. Zack stepped away from the controls and Matt opened the door.
Water immediately rushed in with a cool salty breeze and the engines whined painfully as they tried to keep the ship afloat with the water coming in. Brian, Johnny, and James jumped out the door, straight into a wave. James felt his world spin a little when he was thrown violently against the hard shell of the ship. The shock of the cold water made him think the entire body of water was the freeze liquid. He could hear Brian cursing at something and he pushed away from the ship. Matt and Zack were in the water. The Koyra was saying something to Matt but James couldn’t hear them over the constant slosh of the waves. After a second Matt called to them, “Swim away from the ship!”
The ship was sinking faster and as it went down a small whirlpool began to form. James looked for Johnny and saw him a few yards ahead of him swimming toward Matt and the Koyra, Brian was already with them. He swam easily enough, the waves were a bit of a challenge but with his long arms he easily pulled himself through the water.
He reached the others soon behind Johnny. He looked back and saw the small whirlpool was gone, nothing remained of their transport. The Koyra was looking too, “We need to keep going. With even five percent the explosion could create a massive wave or whirlpool.” He said tersely. James looked at him surprised, “You activated the self-destruct?”
The Koyra shook his head and started swimming again while he explained, “The ship is set to hover, that means it has to keep a set altitude, it’s sinking but the engines are still going to work to keep that altitude.” He spat out a mouth full of water when a wave blindsided them, “But, the harder the engines work the hotter they get. The cooling systems were damaged and they were already running hot when we hit the surface. When they get too hot they’ll either just shut down or—”
His next words weren’t needed. There was a low rumble James could feel in his bones and they all looked back and saw the surface of the water froth and push up and a geyser of water shot into the air and then the surface collapsed in on itself.
“Holy shit.” James whispered in awe.
“Swim!” Matt said. James realized the hole was getting a lot closer. He swore and started fighting the water dragging him back. He was tiring quickly and the water was intent on taking him down with their ship. He kept close watch on Johnny, as the smallest of the group he was struggling more to keep above the waves.
As he was beginning to contemplate the perks of just letting the water drag him down the pull became a little less, and then less, until it finally stopped and the only pull he felt was of the natural rhythms of the water.
Johnny was panting heavily and he pulled the smaller man close and he gratefully wrapped his arms around his neck. The others were trying to catch their breath as well as the waves continued to toss them around.
“Well, that was interesting.” Brian panted. Matt nodded and looked back at where the whirlpool had been, “Very interesting.” He muttered. He turned to the Koyra, “Do you see anything? I’d be happy with a jagged rock.” He said tiredly. The Koyra lifted himself on the next wave and nodded, and pointed to their left. It looks like there are trees over that way. It should be fairly easy to get there though, the waves are with us.”
“Where do you see trees?” Brian asked squinting at the horizon.
“My senses are keener than yours. You should be able to see them in a Fasch or so.” He said quietly. James felt uneasiness settle in him. He essentially knew nothing about Koyra, no one really did. They attacked using stealth and there were only a handful of skirmishes that had been fought on an open field. Those that survived their encounters remembered only the flash of bright eyes in the darkness and then the ensuing death and destruction. Some that were more prone to believing in fables said the Koyra were evil spirits. Whatever they were they were fierce warriors more savage in their attacks than any wild animal. Now James and his friends were sharing space with one of those savages and he had a feeling the Koyra had many more secrets hiding behind those gemstone eyes.
As the Koyra said, they saw the green forms of trees after they had swum for awhile. The planet’s single sun was beginning to go down and James was beginning to wonder what creatures hunted the depths below them at night. They had stayed mostly quiet, conserving their energy for swimming. James had been studying the Koyra on and off trying to commit to memory everything about him that differed from the Api.
He was taking liberties and assuming that Zack was an average specimen from his race. He had noticed that his emerald eyes were not a solid green but flecked with bits of gold. The gold reflected the light and made them almost glow with a supernatural quality. To further occupy his mind he considered the possibility that the Koyra were indeed some kind of spirit. That would certainly explain the strength in that small body.
Johnny was strong, he’d never be able to best Matt in a fair fight, but he was still athletic. This Koyra looked to be the same but as they swam he saw the power in his limbs as he moved. He had a feeling this little man could easily hold his own against someone as big as Matt, maybe even beat them. His breathing wasn’t as labored as theirs, he was still panting, but James could feel his pulse pounding his head as he forced his body to continue moving. He only looked a little winded.
James also noticed, a bit disapprovingly, that his hair was longer than protocol allowed. When his hair was dry the length could be hidden by brushing his hair back, but now that they were wet the strands fell across one side of his face. Having hair longer than regulation length was a danger. Since no one had ever heard a Koyra sneaking up on them they relied heavily on sight to spot danger, having hair in your face tended to make that difficult. He decided he would address Matt about the issue when they reached land.
As dusk fell the waters grew colder and Jimmy could hear Johnny’s teeth chattering as he continued to swim. He could feel the cold seeping into him as well and it made his arms heavier and his legs slower. The Koyra didn’t seem to notice the cold and as the evening grew darker he gradually took the lead. James wondered if they could see in the dark. He thought back over the battle reports he had glanced over and cursed his lack of attention. Fuzzily he was certain the reports he had looked at had said the attacks occurred at night.
“What if we separate?” Johnny panted. It was almost too dark to see him.
“We’re almost there. Another Mitka and we’ll be in shallow water.” The Koyra said quietly.
“Thank the gods.” Brian said. Jimmy could feel the tug of the waves beginning to lessen and he sighed in relief.
The last stretch of swimming was torturous. His limbs were cold and felt like they were weighted with stones; his once crisp strokes were now looked more like the floundering of a beginner in the pool. The light pack on his back was a weight that was pressing him down, further into the waves.
Then his feet kicked a hard, yet yielding surface. His stroke faltered and he went under the waves and pushed himself up gasping. There was finally something beneath him. He stood up on his rubbery legs and said a silent prayer of thanks. Johnny’s small arm wrapped around his waist and he leaned heavily on the taller man.
“Land, sweet land.” Brian said. Matt’s husky laugh floated out of the darkness, “We’re not to land yet.” He said.
“There’s a deep channel in front of us we’ll have to swim across, then we can walk the rest of the way to shore.” The Koyra’s quiet voice also came eerily from the dark. Jimmy felt a different kind of chill work through him. He pulled Johnny closer assuring himself that the little scout was safe beside him.
“Brace yourselves. Big wave.” The soft voice warned. A second later the wave pushed against him with enough force that he had to take a step forward to keep his balance.
“You can see in the dark can’t you.” Johnny whispered.
“I can.” Came the soft voice, “We should get to shore quickly. Something is out hunting.”
James collapsed on the beach and felt himself beginning to drift off into a well deserved slumber when someone gently shook his shoulder, “Stay awake, your temperature is low.” the Koyra whispered. James started violently. He didn’t like not knowing where he was and he didn’t like that the damn thing could see in the dark either. He looked up and gasped when he saw the Koyra’s glowing green eyes looking down at him.
“What?” Brian said tensely. The eyes disappeared and James figured he had looked over at Brian. His suspicions were confirmed when Brian swore, “Gods and Ancestors alike!”
The presence next to him disappeared and a familiar body pressed against his side, “No wonder people think they’re evil spirits.” Johnny whispered, “I’d almost believe it myself, especially with that.”
“You get used to it.” Matt chuckled, “It’s pretty handy.” As he spoke a spark of light flared to brilliance and James saw the Koyra getting a fire started. As soon as it was burning well enough on its own he stepped back away from the flame.
James dragged himself to the cheery flames and Johnny stumbled up next to him before dropping to the ground again. Brian was already sprawled out and eating a supplemental bar. The nasty things were a blend of all the vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins their bodies needed to function and they tasted like a toilet bowl. James pulled his own bar out and grimaced but devoured it anyway.
“Aren’t you gonna eat?” Johnny asked, James looked at him and then he looked up at the Koyra that stood slightly behind Matt. With the firelight his eyes didn’t glow as brightly but they were still unnaturally bright.
“Those things make me sick.” He said quietly, James quirked an eyebrow, yet another very interesting fact about their little Koyra. Matt stood up, “Get some sleep.” He said softly, “We’ll need to move out early tomorrow.”
“Why, where’re you going?” Johnny looked at the worriedly. Matt gave him a gentle smile, “Zack found signs of habitation, I’d rather we not find out the hard way that the inhabitants are hostile. Now,” he sighed, “I’m going with Zack to see if anything here is edible. Our stores won’t last us forever.” And with that they dissolved into the darkness outside of the firelight.
“Why are they goin’ now?” Johnny asked. James shrugged, he was wondering that himself.
“The Koyra doesn’t have any food. The pilots trashed the stuff for him.” Brian said, “I think they intended for us to survive, they could’ve done a lot more damage to that ship, hell they could’ve activated the self-destruct and killed us all the easy way.” He sat up and looked at the area where the two had disappeared, “But they tried to make made damn certain that thing wouldn’t make it.”
“He almost didn’t.” James said quietly, “If Matt hadn’t blasted a hole in the chamber he would’ve either suffocated or frozen to death.”
“I was wondering where the hole came from.” Brian said, then he sighed, “Well, unless he can find something edible he’s going to starve to death.”
James nodded but oddly the thought troubled him. He’d heard from several sources that starving was an extremely painful way to die; it was slow, very slow. He shook the thought off and pulled his pack out to use as a pillow and lay down. Johnny curled next to him and was asleep almost instantly. James stayed awake a little longer waiting for the other two to come back but he drifted off before they returned.
A/N: Oh yeah, I’m having way too much fun with this =D
