EN: Thanks to Ero and Pulska for the reviews!
Ero-Drugs. Make. Everything. Better! Hahaha. Not really. Just say no, kids, lol. Except Ero, 'cause she's got a perscription. Anyway, I'd love sending you soup! I'm a whiz with chicken.
Pulska-I don't mean to cock tease!
I fussed with my shirt as I got out of the cab and paid the driver. I wanted to look kid-friendly, but still professional. Of course, I knew it was probably a bad idea to wear anything too nice. But what if his kids were dressed to the nines? Oh God, dog walking had been so much easier. No one had cared if I showed up in sweat pants and a tank dog and slippers, because they just didn’t want to walk the dogs themselves.
I knocked politely on the door and listened. I heard people talking and moving. No one came to the door. I knocked again, a little louder this time. The door opened, and a little boy peered up at me.
“Are you one of the movers?” he had the most adorable French accent. I smiled and shook my head.
“No,”
“Then you’re a stranger.” He frowned, peering up at me through his bangs. His eyes were a reflection of his father’s, and it was almost enough to make me gasp. In fact, the resemblance was uncanny.
“I suppose you’re right.” I tapped my chin thoughtfully. “I think we ought to be introduced. Is your Daddy home?”
“I’m not supposed to tell that to strangers.” He continued to peer up at me.
“Okay. Well, if he is home, can you go tell him Charity is here?” the little boy looked uncomfortable for a moment. I could tell he didn’t like the prospect of that, and though there was something not quite right with the way I was finding loopholes in the rules.
“How about this. Do you know the Tooth Fairy?”
“Yes!” He grinned, and I could see two gaps in his mouth, places teeth hadn’t grown in yet.
“Well, guess what?” I knelt down and spoke in a stage whisper. “I just happen to know the Tooth Fairy!”
“You DO?” his eyes went wide as plates. I nodded solemnly.
“I do. I know her well. And since I know her, and you know her, we’re not really strangers, are we?” I smiled. It was just like adding friends on Facebook. Your friend knew them, so you were sort of friends.
“I guess not. Come on,” clearly now we were in fact best friends. He grabbed my wrist and tugged me into the house. “Daddy! Daddy, Charity’s here!”
“Jack, will you let her in?” Johnny called.
“I already did!” he chirped. I stopped short at what had to be the kitchen. Johnny was standing at the stove, wearing a flowered pink apron, covered in flour. A girl was sitting on the counter, mixing something in the bowl.
“Jack, you know you’re supposed to tell me who’s here before you let them in.” he scolded lightly.
“It’s my fault.” I said quickly, seeing the little boy look stricken. “I told him that had a friend in common.”
“Me?” he poked at something in the pan with a spatula.
“The Tooth Fairy.” I corrected. The girl with her blonde hair looked at me. Until then, she had ignored me. I gave her a smile, which she did not return. But she didn’t look away either. I guess I was on neutral ground with her. Jack, meanwhile, was clinging to my hand.
“Daddy, where did you find someone who knows the Tooth Fairy?!?” he inquired.
“Daddy has people.” Johnny gave me a grin. “Look, guys, why don’t you get washed up and then all four of us will have some lunch, and then you and Charity will go to the park.” Jack scampered off, while the girl hopped down and stalked away.
“I don’t think she likes me.” I mused.
“She’s just upset her mother isn’t here—yet.” He added hastily. I raised an eyebrow, but didn’t push it. “So are you okay with taking them to the park?”
“Well, yeah, but I thought you were going to watch how we played?” it sounded lame, but I wanted him near in case something went wrong. Was the Heimlich different for a kid than a dog?
“I’ll be shadowing you.” He whispered and tapped his nose. I smiled and sniffed the air.
“What’s burning?” I asked. Johnny gasped and spun back to the stove, turning off the pan.
“Lunch,” he told me mournfully, poking at several black masses on the pan.
“What did it used to be?”
“Grilled cheese. And Lily-Rose was going to bake some cookies. I was going to open some tomato soup, too.” He sighed and ran his hand through his hair.
“Did you butter the pan first?” I asked, peering over his shoulder at the damage.
“What the huh?” he blinked.
“Know what? Why don’t you just go make sure the kids are cleaned up and I’ll make the lunch.” He slunk away, still wearing that apron while I put the pan in the sink, found another, and got to work.

“Are you coming to the park with us, Daddy?” Lily-Rose asked casually as she rolled up her sleeves.
“No, angel. This time is for you and Charity to get to know each other.” He poured a squirt of liquid hand soap into each child’s palm. Jack beamed.
“You mean we get her all to ourselves?”
“That’s right, kiddo.” He leaned against the door and watched them scrub their hands.
“She looks like fun!”
“I don’t think so. Did you see her t-shirt? Blue and white stripes? She looked like a sailor!” Lily-Rose rinsed her hands.
“Lily-Rose!” Johnny was shocked. “Don’t you dare be rude to her. She’s going to take care of you and Jack, and I want you to be nice to her and make her job easier.” Jeeze, Vanessa had turned the girl into a princess. Well, that was going to stop really quick. She sighed and nodded.
“Listen, you two, I know things are hard right now with your mom being here. And I’m sorry about that, I really am. But I promise that you’re going to be happy. You just have to give it a chance. You just have to give Charity a chance.”
Lily-Rose nodded, just a little. The kids dried their hands and then the three of them trooped downstairs. The burnt smell had been replaced by the delicious smell of grilled cheese, golden brown, and tomato soup.
“Ready to eat, guys?” Charity looked up from the stove with a smile. Johnny looked at that smile, the way her hair was falling in her face, the way she looked holding a spatula and swallowed.
“Sure,” he said tightly.
