Chapter 4 – Clean Up
Craig had not been so easy on him. In many ways Craig was even more devastated than Raven. There was a special bond between Vin and Craig. As Vin thought back on it now he realized just how close he’d come to never getting that bond back. Craig had always been the skeptical one, the one who was “not quite sure” about this movie star that wanted to date his sister. Knowing how close Raven was to her brothers Vin had tried to draw Craig out, to make friends, and he’d tried everything. But Craig was difficult to read. Quiet, more so than Chris. Both boys were very involved with computers and Vin had been able to get Chris to open up with his interest in the game Dungeons and Dragons.
No such luck with Craig, his head was always in the books. Both boys were hoping to wind up at Duke when it was time to go to college, but Raven had already told them even if she saved every spare dollar she could find, it wasn’t going to be enough. They were going to have to apply for scholarships and grants and hope for the best. The unexpected death of their parents in an auto accident had left her ill prepared for sending the boys to school. After paying all the bills and the note on the house there just wasn’t enough money for college for both of them.
They’d submitted their applications to lots of schools, and were “blown away” when both of them were accepted at Duke. As graduation got closer and closer it became increasingly evident that only one of them would be able to go. When the money situation was first brought to their attention they’d agreed that in the event that they couldn’t save enough for school that whoever got the highest grade point average would be the one to go. By the time their birthday came around, it was obvious that Christopher was going to be the one to go to school. As happy as Chris was to be going he was equally disappointed and broken hearted that Craig would not be with him.
The night of their 17th birthday they had a small group of friends over for a party. Much to Raven’s surprise Vin flew in from California. She hadn’t expected him until the next week, but there he was, standing on the doorstep holding the boys’ birthday presents, and when he stepped through the door, blowing the minds of all their friends. When it came time to open the presents Vin insisted that Chris open his before Craig.
As Chris opened the large box and peeled back the tissue paper he found a custom made Duke Blue Devils jacket, with his name custom stenciled into the leather. He loved it, but tried to hide just how much, so as not to hurt his brother’s feelings. Then it was Craig’s turn, at Raven’s prompting he opened Vin’s gift. As he pulled back the tissue paper he found…another Duke jacket almost identical to the one his brother just opened, except this one had his name across the front and an envelope sticking out of the pocket.
Craig was shocked and confused; he didn’t know what to think. He looked at Raven and then at Vin, who just nodded at the jacket and said, “Open it” referring to the envelope in the pocket. Craig’s heart was racing; his hands were shaking so badly he almost couldn’t get the envelope out of the pocket. When he did manage to tear it open all that was inside was a receipt…not for the jacket, but for his tuition. His first year at Duke had been paid for, lock, stock and barrel by Vin Diesel. He was speechless.
As the others in the room realized what the paper was he finally found his voice and said “I-.I can’t take this…it’s too much…”
Chris piped up with “Are you crazy, this is the answer to our prayers, what do you mean you can’t take it…?”
“I can’t…” he said shaking his head no, and looking Vin in the eye, the challenge faint, but still there, as he tried to hand the envelope back to him, hands still shaking.
It was in that moment that Vin finally understood what this kid needed, what he’d been looking for all along. Diesel was seated on the arm of the side chair in which Raven sat, with one arm around her shoulders and holding a cold beer in the other hand. He stood, and raising the hand that held the beer pointed at Craig with the bottle, then spoke in that gravely toned voice as only Vin Diesel could….
“You do what I tell you, and you better bring me some A’s, cause I’m not doing this next year for B’s… got it?”
With that one sentence he gave Craig everything he’d been waiting to hear. That he cared enough about him to help him, that he wasn’t going anywhere, he was gonna be around, and last but not least, he gave him a hero, someone he could look up to…depend on, he hadn’t had that since their father died.
As Craig sat looking at the receipt he felt overwhelmed, his biggest dream had just come true, he was going to college with his brother. His eyes glazed over with tears as he stood and moved to embrace Vin. Not one of those chest bumping, what’s up dog moves that guys do, but a genuine embrace…the way brothers hug, the way a son embraces a father.
“Thank you Popi,” he whispered in Vin’s ear. Raven couldn’t believe what she heard. She’d never heard Craig refer to anyone other than their father as “Popi.” Christopher just smiled as if he’d known the deal all along. And all things considered he probably did have a pretty good idea why Craig had been so distant with Vin. Truth be told…Craig was Vin’s biggest fan, had been all along. Too proud to let him see just how much he admired him, too cautious and afraid to let his guard down with someone who might not be inclined to stick around for the long haul.
The Popi reference caught Vin a little off guard too. He grabbed Craig by the crown of his head and pulled him forward, kissing him on the forehead, smacking him softly on the side of the face and then sticking his pointing finger under his nose and with a big grin said,
“A’s got it?”
“I got it Popi, A’s I promise…”
From that day on Vin and Craig had been, as they say, “thick as thieves.” With Craig wanting to hang out and go everywhere he could with Vin whenever time would allow. So for things to be so bad between them now, for there to be this distance….well, Vin knew he had to fix this in a hurry.
