“Hey! I’m Samantha your group leader.” The girl beamed at them, “Alright guys, we’re going to split up again into groups of seven so it’ll be easier to talk to each other.”
Zack felt anxiety again seize him and he could feel Johnny also tensing up.
“So you guys can divvy yourselves up, I’ve gotta get the other leaders over here and we’ll spread out okay?” she bounced away to grab four other people in purple shirts in a group on the other side of the auditorium. Zack and Johnny stuck close together and four other students wandered over to them in what, Zack was certain, they thought a nonchalant manner. He could smell their excitement though and he relaxed a little, he wouldn’t mind being in a group of fans, especially if Johnny was with him, this group thing could turn out to be a lot of fun. A girl wandered over to their group and gave them all a bland smile and then went back to looking the other groups over.
Samantha came back over to the group with the other four purple shirts and found the students in five loose groups, “Wonderful, okay leaders, pick a group and go. We’ll meet on the third floor of this building at ten.” She walked over to a group and began leading them away chatting excitedly. Their group was approached by another girl with short chestnut brown hair that just brushed her shoulders, “Hi I’m Emily!” she said brightly. She began walking quickly to the doors they had come in, the group stayed a little ways behind her as she began chatting animatedly about the history of the building and the fun activities they had planned for the day.
Zack looked over at Johnny, the grey wolf looked bored already and he snickered. Johnny’s eyes brightened and he looked at him curiously, “What?”
“I don’t think I can do this for another hour and a half.” He whispered nodding his head in the direction of their team leader. Johnny chewed his lip for a second and then giggled, “No way in hell. God I bet Brian tears his ‘leader’ a new one if they’re anything like this.”
Zack snickered and nodded, four of the other students snorted laughs; they obviously knew the band members well. The last girl to join their group looked at them quizzically and walked faster to catch up to their group leader.
“What are you guys doin’ all the way back there? Come on, I don’t wanna lose you, this place can get confusing.” Emily called. She was paused at the door to a stairwell and when they caught up she skipped up the steps still talking. Again the group hung back, listening to her voice as it echoed off the walls. Zack wished he could fold his ears back; her voice was almost twice as annoying when it reverberated.
“So, um, why are you guys going to school?” one boy squeaked out as they climbed. Zack thought over the story they had concocted, it wasn’t anything complicated and it was fairly close to the truth, “My mom and dad called up some of their old college friends when we were on break and they were talking about all the stuff they did and I thought it sounded like fun.”
“And of course we never go anywhere alone.” Johnny snickered. Emily was waiting impatiently for them at another door and then quickly they were led down a hallway to a room with eight chairs in a circle.
“You know college isn’t all about the party right.” The quiet girl that had joined their group said looking them over. Zack and Johnny nodded and the other four glared at her.
“Okay, grab a chair.” Emily chirped as she plopped down in a chair by the door. The rest of the group spread out and sprawled out in their chairs.
“I know college can be kind of scary, some of you are probably pretty far from home, so we’re going to get to know each other a little. That way you’ll know seven other people here when classes start.” She smiled at them, “The first game we’re going to do is an ‘about me’ game. Everyone say three unique things about you and yes everyone has something interesting to say.” She said looking around the group still smiling, “I’ll start. I broke my high school’s hurdle record when I was a junior, I’ve had my pet goldfish Ralph for almost four years which is pretty cool because they’re only supposed to live one or two, and I was born in Hawaii.” She finished happily. She turned to the quiet girl, “Oh be sure to give your name too.” She said looking around again, she gestured for the girl to continue the game.
“My name is Kari Augustin. I was adopted from the Ukraine when I was a baby, I’m the first person in my family to go to college, and I have younger brothers that are twins.” She said rapidly. They continued around the circle to the next girl, Sasha Bork, then to Robby Cutler, and then it was Zack’s turn.
“Um, I’m Zacky Vengeance…Baker, I play guitar in Avenged Sevenfold.” He elbowed Johnny in the side when he giggled. Emily’s eyes lit up, “You’re in a band, oh that’s awesome. I dated a guy in a band once, he was the drummer. What kind of music do you guys play?” she asked excitedly. Zack blinked and looked at Johnny; he was accustomed to people not recognizing them, but he wasn’t really used to talking to them.
“We, uh, don’t really have any specific genre. We’re just Avenged Sevenfold.” He said.
“They’re more rock and metal.” One of the yet unnamed girls chimed in. Emily nodded, “I don’t listen to much of that stuff, I’m a country girl.” She laughed. Someone snorted and Zack looked over and saw Robby with the hood of his sweatshirt over his head and his head buried in his chest, his body shook lightly as he tried not to laugh. Zack bit back a smile, he didn’t want to hurt Emily’s good mood, she was genuinely curious about them.
“Well, that’s one cool thing, what are two more?” she asked happily. Zack thought and shrugged, “I’ve been to Europe, Japan, and Australia, South America, Mexico and most of the U.S. at least twice. And, uh…our new album will be out next year.” He finished. Johnny smacked his shoulder, “Bastard you took mine.” He pouted.
“That’s what you get for sitting over there.” He laughed. He felt the excitement ripple through the other students when he announced the tentative release time for their new album. They would all probably be blogging the news that night. Emily was looking at the two of them in confusion, “You two know each other?”
Johnny laughed, “Yeah, I’m Johnny Christ, bassist for Avenged Sevenfold.”
“Your last name is Christ?” Kari stared at him in disbelief. Zack snorted and other quieter snickers rippled through the group. Johnny shook his head, “Nah, my last name is Seward, but they call me Christ.”
“I’d worship that.” One of the unnamed girls next to Johnny whispered to the girl on her other side. Zack bit back a laugh.
“Why do they call you Christ?” Kari’s voice was angry and again Zack tried to contain his laughter. Johnny shrugged, “It was Zack’s idea.”
“Okay, well what are two other things about you?” Emily stepped in quickly before Kari could say anything else. Johnny chewed his lip, “I’m allergic to cats…and…uh, I don’t like fire.” He finished brightly. Emily frowned a little, “There are a lot of people allergic to cats and afraid of fire.” She said. Johnny chewed on his lip, “Then…uh, I…I’ve had four DUIs and one felony fleeing charge.” He finally said. Zack laughed out loud and then clapped a hand over his mouth and continued to giggle. Emily gave him a slight nod and quickly moved on to the girl next to Johnny.
Brian’s POV
What the hell was this; third grade? He didn’t want to play this Tom guy’s stupid little games; he should’ve just stayed home. He sighed quietly as the rest of the group sat down. A dark-haired girl sat down next to him with a shy smile. He returned the gesture with as much warmth as he could muster and tried to hide his annoyance; no reason to make a fan feel like they were a problem.
A small breeze came with the girl’s movement and his irritation disappeared. Through the light dusting of body spray and shampoo he could smell the warm, natural scent of her skin. He fought the urge to lean over and run his nose down her neck, though the girl didn’t look like she’d mind he didn’t think Tom or whatever his name was would appreciate it.
He swallowed almost nervously and looked at her out the corner of his eye and found her peeking at him from under her bangs. She giggled with embarrassment and quickly looked away. Brian smiled at her when she peeked at him again and her shy smile reappeared.
The kid on his other side lightly tapped his shoulder, without looking away from her he played Tom’s game, “Brian Haner from Orange County.” He said loud enough for the rest of the room to hear. The girl’s smile became more confident, “Michelle Dibennetto, I’m from Orange County too.” Her musical voice was a little lower than he imagined it but so much better than he could have dreamed.
They continued to do name games for the rest of the hour but he couldn’t have told anyone who else was in the room with him. It had been centuries since his beloved Shasta had died and he had never met another with anything close to her allure; Michelle had it though, in fact he was almost certain she had more. Both wolf and human were completely enthralled with her. She seemed to like him too, which was always a good thing, and her bright brown eyes gained more and more confidence the longer they talked.
Finally their group session ended and Tom led them to the third floor for the next part of the day. He didn’t really care, he barely registered that he was walking; Michelle was talking about her hometown and he couldn’t hear enough of her voice.
Matt’s POV
He was absolutely certain his love for Zack was never ending, because if it hadn’t been, he would not be sitting in this group listening to Kelly chatter excitedly about her two hour drive here. He was still thinking about jumping out a window but he quelled the urge and resigned himself to the torture.
There was a she-wolf in the group with him, she’d been looking him over since he joined the group but he didn’t give her much thought. He was more concerned with keeping his sanity and not strangling Kelly. The she-wolf was still staring at him; he gave her a bored look and then went back to staring at the white board at the front of the room. He could tell his lack of interest was annoying the other wolf and he found that to be a little amusing. It had been awhile since a wolf had taken interest in him; with Zack constantly by his side it was obvious he wasn’t looking for anyone. He wished he was with his little mate, Zack always managed to distract him when he was bored or irritated and he was currently both.
They were going around giving out their names and their favorite drink, the she-wolf glared at him, “My name is Saphira and my favorite drink is grape Crush.” Her voice was light and a little reedy but he figured that was her “indignant voice” and continued to not pay attention to her. When it finally got to him he realized he didn’t have a favorite drink lined up so he shrugged and said the first thing that came to mind, “I’m Matt and my favorite drink is Jack Daniels and Coke.”
A couple of the kids snickered and Kelly looked a little put out, “How about a non-alcoholic drink?” she said. Matt sighed internally, “Non-alcoholic…coffee.”
Kelly brightened again and moved on to the next person. He watched the different people in the group without really hearing anything they said, his mind was elsewhere. He thought about the rapidly approaching release date for their new record and all the things they still had to do, he wondered how the rest of his pack was doing and if Brian had mauled anyone. The last thought made him smile a little, their cranky Beta was probably looking for someplace to hide the bodies already.
After what seemed like half his lifetime Kelly finally announced that they had to start heading to the third floor for their next program. He decided if they split into groups again he was sneaking into Zack’s group because he couldn’t handle another hour and a half of Kelly and the annoying she-wolf.
Unfortunately the gods saw it fit for him to suffer a little longer before he could be reunited with his mate. The she-wolf slid up next to him, lightly brushing his side, “Hello,” she purred quietly, “your name is Matt correct, short for Matthew I’m guessing?” her fingers brushed against his again and he lifted his lip in a silent snarl. The she-wolf bristled next to him but still didn’t back off, “There’s no reason to be hostile, I’m only trying to make small talk.” She whispered. Matt lengthened his stride and in only a few steps was in the center of the group and away from the annoying dog.
Jimmy’s POV
He didn’t mind perky people, he was pretty perky himself, but there was a limit. Jackie exceeded that limit with flying colors. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to laugh or throttle her. She happily passed out small pieces of paper to half the students in the group and asked them to write their names on them and their favorite animal. Jimmy stared at his paper for a second then snorted a laugh and scribbled his name and put “Wolf” under it and folded it in half.
Jackie came around with a hat and everyone put their slips of paper in it and then she mixed everything up. “Okay, those of you that didn’t get a piece of paper the first time grab one now and then find that person and ask them about the animal they wrote.” She chirped happily. Jimmy snickered and shook his head and leaned back, his person would find him easily enough. There were three girls and four boys, counting himself, in there group. Jackie had already pounced on the poor partnerless boy so that left three people. Two of the girls were talking to each other and the other two boys were mumbling about cars to his left.
He was left with a bottle blond with angry brown eyes. The girl’s glare would have made Medusa proud; he blinked in confusion, he had no idea what he had done to incur this girl’s wrath. He decided that sitting on the other side of the room wasn’t going to get him any answers so he stood up and cautiously walked over to the angry girl, “Um, hi, I’m Jimmy.” He smiled, hoping that would lesson the girl’s glare. She hates men, hates the band, or is just hateful in general. His mind reasoned.
The girl continued to glare at him, “Don’t speak to me.” She finally hissed. Jimmy backed up a step, “What the hell?” he held up his hands as if he could ward off her angry words.
“I’ll put a silver in a blade in you before the day is over.” She snarled and then jumped away from him and quickly slipped out the door before anyone noticed.
Zack’s POV
They made it up to the third floor and found two other groups already there; none of their pack mates were among them though so he didn’t pay them much attention. Emily told them to mix and mingle with the other students so he and Johnny drifted to a less populated area of the hallway.
Brian was the first back, he was busy talking to a pretty brunette and didn’t seem to notice them. Matt’s group came in close behind his and his mate made a beeline for him. Zack hid a giggle and flashed his mate a smile. The older wolf gave his own smile and leaned against the wall next to him, “You’re lucky I love you.” He murmured. Zack shifted to lean against him, “I figured Brian would be the cranky one.” He snickered. Matt looked around the hallway and spotted Brian still talking to the girl. He raised an eyebrow but that was the only interest he showed in their usually cranky Beta’s behavior.
Johnny spotted Jimmy almost as soon as he rounded the corner into the hallway. The little bassist didn’t run over to him like Zack knew he wanted to, but settled for smiling happily and lightly bouncing up and down. Jimmy gave the little wolf a distracted smile but his eyes were dark with apprehension.
Once he was close enough Zack knew why the big wolf was worried, he could smell the acrid scent of Hunter clinging loosely to his skin and clothes. His lips twitched up in a silent snarl and Jimmy nodded slightly. Matt’s slouched posture straightened and he quickly looked around and motioned for them to go into an adjoining hallway that was free of other students. He looked over at Brian, but the black wolf was still talking to the girl and not paying any attention to them.
“What’s wrong?” Johnny whispered once they were alone. Zack wrinkled his nose again, “You need to shower, soon.” He informed the big wolf. Jimmy laughed quietly, “I feel like it.”
Matt growled deep in his chest, “How did they find you?” he asked quietly. Jimmy shrugged, “She knew me already and, as a bonus, she’s promised to put a blade in me before the day is over.” He said lightly. Johnny’s frame went rigid and he looked around the hall angrily.
“Nothing’s going to happen to him Johnny.” Matt reassured. Zack nodded too and then another thought occurred to him, “If she knew Jimmy…”
“She knows the rest of us.” Jimmy finished nodding.
“Well fuck.” Matt muttered. The tone of the students changed and Zack heard a group leader call for the stragglers to find a seat in the room. He didn’t want to go into a room, surrounded by people he didn’t know with a Hunter on the prowl.
“C’mon, we need to get in there and someone needs to catch Brian up.” Matt said. He slipped an arm around Zack’s waist and gently squeezed before he dropped it and they headed for the room. Zack sighed, “I knew this was a stupid idea.”
The next two hours dragged out for what seemed like days. Thankfully they didn’t have to sit with their groups so he and Johnny sat next to their mates; Brian on the other hand was on the other side of the room sitting next to the girl. Zack didn’t like his pack being split with Hunters among them, but the black wolf seemed to be purposefully ignoring them. Matt was beginning to get irritated with his friend too, which was making Johnny a little nervous. Jimmy didn’t really seem concerned at all with the current situation and listened to the various speakers with a bored expression etched on his face.
They got a break between speakers and Jimmy looked at his watch, “When’s lunch?” he muttered. Johnny snorted, “All you do is eat.” His nervousness faded a little as he and Jimmy began picking at each other. Zack looked over at Brian, but the black wolf was looking the other direction. Zack wrinkled his brow and decided to glare at the wolf until he looked at him.
“Don’t even bother with it Zack.” Matt whispered, “He’s not going to pay attention to any of us until he wants too.” He sounded quite annoyed with his friend and Zack had the feeling Brian had done this to him before.
“What’s wrong with him? Usually he frets like a she-wolf if any of us our out of his sight for an hour or longer.” Zack muttered. Matt shook his head in annoyance, “He’s found something of interest.” He said enigmatically.
~*~*~*~
Day one was officially over and Zack couldn’t be happier. He was still insanely stressed out about the Hunter situation and Brian’s weird behavior was not helping at all. He sat down on the floor and then rolled onto his side and tried to relax for a moment. They were staying at a local hotel for Welcome Week. After Welcome Week they had two weeks and then they had three days to move in to their dorm.
Matt lay down on the floor next to him on his stomach and closed his eyes, “I swear if we do any more of those damn name games I’ll kill someone.” He muttered. Zack giggled and rolled over and climbed on his back, “Johnny and I had fun with our group.” He said kissing his mate’s neck.
The door opened and the rest of their pack filed in. Zack was a little surprised to see Brian; the older wolf hadn’t left the orientation with them. He figured he would still be out with his new friend. He got off of Matt and the older wolf rolled onto his back and then gracefully got to his feet. Zack stayed sitting on the floor and Johnny promptly joined him. Jimmy leaned against a wall and Brian stood with his arms crossed close to the center of the room.
Matt ignored him, “We need to decide if we’re going to stay or not.” He said without preamble.
“What? Why would we leave?” Brian exploded. The others ignored him.
“We’re going to be in danger no matter where we are. We always have been.” Jimmy said practically. Zack nodded, “But before they didn’t know who we were.” He said quietly. Brian was glaring at them, “What the hell are you talking about?” he snapped. Zack was tempted to snarl at him, but held his peace.
“They’ve always been able to find us.” Johnny said, and then furrowed his brow, “But not so quickly. It usually takes a day or two for positive identification.”
“They usually have to talk to their Elders before identification can be confirmed.” Matt said.
“Why are we talking about Hunters?” Brian growled, then he glared at Matt, “Are you going to throw a fit every time I ignore you?” he snarled. Matt gave him a level look, “Go play with your new toy while you can, we may not be here much longer.” He said evenly. Brian gaped at him and then made an infuriated sound; he bared his small human teeth at the Alpha. Zack stood in one fluid motion and calmly stood between the angry Beta and his mate, “We have been trying to get your attention all day to tell you what was going on and you insisted on ignoring us. It’s no one’s fault but your own that you don’t know what’s going on.”
The room was deathly quiet as Brian continued to glare and growl. Zack hid his anger and held the Beta’s gaze without flinching. Brian looked away after a minute but he was in no way subdued, there was still an angry growl rumbling in his chest. Out the corner of his eye he saw Jimmy shake his head and then he pushed himself away from the wall and sat next to Johnny who had become little more than a statue since the confrontation started, “You know Brian, there are wolves out there that would kill you for the slightest bit of disobedience. In one of my previous packs I saw two wolves killed for only the slightest challenge against the Alphas.” He said breezily. Brian glared at him instead, “I fail to see your point.” He snarled. Jimmy still looked unfazed as he pulled Johnny into his lap, the little wolf’s body relaxed and he buried his head in Jimmy’s shoulder. He met Brian’s angry eyes fearlessly, “You’re lucky they are more forgiving. I would have kicked you out this afternoon because of your behavior or trounced you. Either way, it would be a much harsher punishment than five minutes of ignoring you.”
Brian was silent for a moment and Zack watched him fidget uncomfortably. Matt simply turned back to what he was doing after a moment, “Are we going to stay or go?” he asked again. Brian stayed quiet and Zack leaned back against his mate and sighed while rubbing his forehead. Matt wrapped an arm around him and kissed his temple, Zack relaxed a little and started to slowly think through their problem.
They were always being hunted, that was just a fact of life, but Hunters never acted without first consulting their Elders. Since this Hunter had made herself known to Jimmy that meant she already had the blessing and her group was free to hunt.
“They still haven’t taken their Alpha.” Zack said quietly. Matt’s arm tightened around his waist. Johnny was starting to unthaw in Jimmy’s protective embrace but still watched Brian, “They’ve had four years to make another attempt and we haven’t heard a peep outta them. Why would they attack us now?” he asked quietly. Jimmy nuzzled his head, “We’re stuck. On tour we can disappear into the city or we’re constantly surrounded by security. On campus we only have so far to run before we have to come back and we’ll be alone more often.” He explained quietly. Johnny snuggled closer to him and glanced nervously at the window.
“Nothing is going to hurt him Jonathon.” Zack said, the little wolf looked up at him with the trace of a smile on his lips and nodded.
“We should get out of here as soon as we can.” Zack sighed. He turned his head to look at Matt, his silence was no longer angry but thoughtful, “But I have a feeling you’ve already thought of something else.” He murmured. Matt’s lips twitched up into a smile, “Maybe.” Was all he said. Zack lightly smacked his thigh, “It’s useless if we don’t know what it is.” He said rolling his eyes. Matt lightly nipped his neck, “You are so impatient.” He said shaking his head.
“I wonder if it’s really us they’re after.” He held up a hand when the other four opened their mouths, “There was a wolf in my group today, which leaves the possibility of the Hunters not being after us but her instead.”
“They’re not after us for the moment, once their primary quarry is dead they will be. They’ve probably already contacted the Elders. They’ll have the go ahead by tomorrow evening at the latest.” Brian said sullenly. Zack felt his stomach twist with Matt and Brian calmly discussing the death of another wolf, “So what, are we going to let the Hunters kill this wolf to keep ourselves safe for another day?” he said angrily. Matt’s smooth lips pressed against his neck again, “I don’t think you would be so quick to protect her if you met her.” He whispered. Zack’s anger cooled a little and he gave his mate a suspicious look, “Why do you think that?” he asked.
“I love you Zack, but you have a problem with jealousy.” He chuckled. Zack thought about it for a moment and then shrugged, “True, but we can at least warn her.”
Johnny giggled and Zack sat down again next to him and Jimmy. Matt’s fingers lightly combed through his hair in a soothing way.
“I don’t think it would be anymore dangerous staying here than it would be on tour or at home.” Jimmy said quietly.
“You just said we were stuck.” Brian snorted. Jimmy nodded, “And we are, but we’re also stuck with our tour schedule. At least here we can change our destinations every now and then, with tour they know exactly where we are and when we’re going to be there. We’ll just have to be more watchful when we’re alone.”
Matt nodded, “That’s what I was thinking.”
“I’d like to stay. This place sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun once we get through this week.” Johnny said quietly. Zack snickered and nodded; Johnny finally climbed off Jimmy’s lap and rested his cheek against Matt’s leg.
“We’ll see how this week goes, and decide from there.” Matt finally said.
They were staying in three rooms, like when they were on tour, so after another hour of discussing various cover stories in case they had to drop the college idea the other three dispersed to their rooms. Brian had perked up a little more but was still acting very submissive. His current behavior bothered Zack almost as much as his ignoring them.
“What’s wrong with Brian, he’s never acted like this before.” Zack asked as Matt ran his warm hands over his chest. Matt sighed, “He has, but it was centuries ago.”
Carefully, so he wouldn’t splash water out of the tub he turned over and looked his mate in the eye, “Your little puzzles have never amused me.” He said kissing his jaw. Matt leaned his head back, “When he met Shasta. It was so weird today, like reliving that night.” He murmured, more to himself than Zack.
Territory that will become Italy ca. 133 ad (Matt’s POV)
“Matthias!” The pained shriek was closer but still so far away, he pushed himself to run faster and raised his dark muzzle to the sky and howled for Brian again. He hadn’t known his companion had wandered off until the agonized howl had ripped him from his dreams. Now he was running through the dense underbrush of the forest trying to find him.
Again he howled and Brian answered faintly, he was weakening quickly and Matt didn’t think he would be able to find him without his howls. He blew past a large clump of bushes and then skidded to a stop and flew back to them; Brian’s scent was clinging to the leaves. He found the trail and urged his four legs to move faster.
“Matthias!” the call was weak, but it was close. He yipped a greeting and in a moment found his lover by a tree. His skin was paler than moonlight and he was drenched with sweat. His eyes were glazed with agony and his breathing was growing weaker by the second. Matt shifted out of his wolf form and dropped down next to him, “What is it sweet wolf?” he murmured. Brian whimpered but didn’t give an answer. He could smell the black wolf’s blood soaking into the dirt and looked him over for injuries. He found a crude snare twisted tightly around his ankle.
The snare was built the same as any other but it was made of silver. He stared at it for a second and then shook himself and grabbed the metal. The pain was instantaneous. He swore and jerked his hand away and rolled away from the trap and Brian cursing his burning fingers. Brian let out a low howl of pain and weakly struggled against the snare working it deeper into his flesh.
Matt held his burning hand close to his side and slowly moved back to his dieing companion. Matt took a deep breath and again grabbed the snare, if he could cut the loop away from the base it would be easy to loosen the knot and separate Brian from the trap. Bright stars of pain danced in front of his eyes but he gritted his teeth and kept his hand wrapped around the metal. The metal was soft, the twine forged from almost pure silver, and he tore it with little difficulty. He fell to the ground again and passed out gasping in pain.
He woke up with a raging headache and his skin feeling like it had been dipped in acid. Sunlight dappled his skin through the overhead branches; he rolled over looking for Brian and already fearing him dead. The black wolf was sleeping peacefully next to him, his injured ankle was swollen and the skin black and purple. He carefully sat up and looked around.
To his right, under a thick flowering bush a woman lay sound asleep. She was naked like they, her waist length, inky black hair spilled over her alabaster skin like a waterfall of midnight. As he watched her he saw her eyes flicker and then slowly open, she sat up and stared at him as silently as he stared at her. Her almond shaped eyes were a deep blue-grey color, reminiscent of worn stone or clouds over the ocean, her pale rose lips curved into a smile, “Good morning.” She murmured in a light and musical voice. Matt dipped his head in greeting but still didn’t speak. She was beautiful, but he was more concerned with her motives than her looks.
“Who are you?” he whispered. Her smile didn’t fade, “My name is Shasta. Who are you?”
“Matthias, this,” he gestured toward the still sleeping Brian, “is Brian.” He said. She nodded, “You’re not too old are you.” She said matter-of-factly. His pride swelled against the assumption, “I was born when Rome was merely an infant.” He said haughtily. The woman’s eyes widened in astonishment, “You are so old then? Then why were you so affected by the silver?”
Matt looked at his hand, “I don’t know. Why did it burn?” he looked up at her confused and her eyes seemed to widen even more, “Who changed you Matthias? Where is your Alpha?” she asked incredulously. Matt cocked his head to the side questioningly, “I don’t know who changed me. All I remember is a dog leaping at me from an alley and the next I remember I woke in a field next to a slaughtered deer.” He said. Shasta stared at him for a moment, “Then…you’ve been alone? The wolf that bit you didn’t try to find you?” she sounded amazed and that puzzled Matt all the more.
“No. I left the city when I realized what I was. I found Brian after a battle half dead with his wounds. I didn’t want to change him, but we were so far from any surgeon it was the only way he would’ve survived.” He explained. Shasta composed herself and looked him over, “And in all those years you’ve never encountered silver?” she asked. Matt shook his head, “We’ve stuck to the wilds; people are too noisy and superstitious.”
Shasta sucked in a breath, “Then there is probably much I need to tell you about.” She said, “I’ll wait until you’re both well enough to travel though. We’re not safe here.”
Matt looked around, “Safe from what?” he asked.
“Hunters.” She said simply. Matt stared at her with more confusion, “We’ve been avoiding hunters for years. They’re nothing to worry about.” He said confidently. Shasta stared at him with amazement again and then chuckled, “No, no, not those kinds of hunters. That will be one of the things I’ll have to tell you about.”
Brian whimpered and their conversation ended, both tended to the injured man in companionable silence. Brian’s eyes fluttered open and he looked around confused for a moment before he found Matt and then his eyes cleared, “I thought you were a dream.” He whispered. Matt smiled and kissed his forehead and then lay down with his head resting on Brian’s shoulder.
“Who’re you?” he whispered when he saw Shasta reclining next to him. Shasta flashed him a smile, “Shasta, Matthias has already given me your name, but formal introductions never hurt.” She laughed.
“Brian.” The black wolf said with a smile in his voice, “Nice to meet you.”
“Are you strong enough to change?” She asked. Matt rolled off his shoulder and easily shifted to his wolf form. Brian’s flesh rippled and then he was wolf. He held his left hind leg off the ground but as long as they kept an easy pace he would have no problems keeping up. Shasta shifted as well, her wolf form was a pristine white that brought out the blue in her eyes and darkened the gray to almost black. Matt made a slight bow, asking for her to take the lead. She wagged her tail and began a slow trot. Brian leaped after her and quickly fell in beside her.
They jogged for most of the day, they stopped long enough at a creek to quench their thirst and to clean Brian’s wound, but continued their tireless pace soon after. They were stopped again in a dense group of saplings and bushes; Shasta and Brian were a couple yards away completely absorbed with each other. Matt was sulking alone under a sharp-leaved bush; Brian hadn’t spoken to him since he woke up. He’d been by Shasta’s side since they started running and he was once again feeling the sharp bite of loneliness, something he hadn’t experienced since he had changed Brian. He didn’t like it.
He stood up and angrily shook himself, dislodging sticks and leaves and slipped off into the forest without the other two noticing. He could find something to eat and then see if he could find a way to join in their conversation.
A plump rabbit was unlucky enough to his teeth and he took his time eating, trying to work out his complicated feelings. He was feeling a little jealous, he’d had Brian all to himself for centuries and he admitted that the black wolf wasn’t his. He could have other friends if he so pleased. He was hurt too; Brian hadn’t even acknowledged his existence since he saw Shasta. He whimpered, his appetite gone, and finished the rabbit only because he didn’t know when he would find game again.
He walked back to where Shasta had led them and found the area empty. He trotted over and sniffed at where he was certain he had last seen the pair and found their scent strong and fresh. They hadn’t left too long ago. He followed the trail to a small creek and there lost the scent. He searched the other bank but with no luck, they had stayed in the water which meant finding them would be near impossible. He sat back on his haunches and looked around almost helplessly and whimpered quietly.
He only sat for a moment and then got up and crossed the creek and began heading north. Summer was coming to the area and he was not fond of the heat.
Present Day Zack’s POV
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” he asked quietly pressing his lips against the hollow of Matt’s throat. His mate lightly purred beneath him in pleasure and then answered, “He’ll come to his senses soon. He just needs a day or two.”
Zack sighed and nuzzled his chest, “We may not have a day or two.” He murmured. Matt’s arms tightened around him, “We’ll be fine Zachary.” He whispered. Zack sighed, “I knew this was a stupid idea.”
Matt easily pulled him up his slick torso and captured his lips in a heated kiss. His strong hands gently massaged his triceps. Zack straddled his slim hips and gently tweaked his hardening nipples. Matt groaned as they kissed and pulled Zack closer. Zack broke the kiss and sat up, “C’mon big boy, the water’s cold.” He said with a smile. Matt followed him out of the tub and quickly toweled off.
Rough hands roamed over skin, playful fingers pinched and twisted hard nipples, and soft lips traced over muscles leaving a trail of fire in their wake. Zack gasped and arched up into Matt when his thick length brushed against his prostate, he dug his fingernails into his mate’s arms as he tried to stifle his screams of pleasure. Matt’s whispery moan filled the room, Zack’s legs tightened around his waist pushing him in further. Matt moved slowly in and out of him, prolonging the pleasure and driving them both insane with want.
“More.” Zack gasped, Matt’s sharp teeth nipped his neck and a short scream escaped him. Matt’s mouth covered his and his thrusts became harder and faster. Zack groaned and held Matt’s lips prisoner with gentle bites and deep kisses. His body jerked explosively with his orgasm and Matt’s hot seed filled him at the same time.
Matt’s heavier frame collapsed next to him. Zack lay still for a moment relishing the weightless feeling orgasms always left him with before he rolled over into Matt’s chest. Matt was already half asleep, but smiled when Zack’s smaller body pressed against his.
A/N: I’m basing this off of my experience in Freshman Orientation at Ball State and yes, we did play all those stupid little name games for like two hours and then sat for another three hours and listened to people give us the history of the school. It was boring as hell.
