Jimmy’s POV
He’d been to the beach before, hell he’d lived there for a week or two before but the beach back home couldn’t compare to this white sand paradise. He was sprawled out on the warm sand shirtless soaking up the tropical sun and doing what Shadows had suggested: Relaxing. It felt wonderful, the waves lapped against the shore quietly while a hundred different birds sang in the thick jungle behind him. He wasn’t sure where Shadows had gone but he didn’t concern himself with the moody angel’s whereabouts.
“You’re going to burn.” The husky voice said from above him. He cracked an eye open as Shadows’ body blocked his sun. He shrugged, “Meh.” And then closed his eyes again. Shadows disappeared again and the sun was back on him, “I’m not fixing you again.” He called. Jimmy sighed and sat up, the angel was walking into the water, the cresting waves washed over his black feathers.
“Your feathers are getting wet.” He called sleepily.
“Water tends to do that.” Came the snarky reply. Jimmy scowled at him, “You won’t be able to fly if they’re wet.” He said. Shadows looked at him over his shoulder, “Do you know what a duck is James?” he asked sarcastically, “It’s a bird that gets its feathers wet and still manages to fly.”
“Until someone blasts it in the face with a shotgun.” Jimmy muttered glaring at him. The angel continued wading into the water until he could duck down and let the waves wash over him. His sleepy mood was gone and Jimmy stood and stretched and ambled his way over to the water, to his surprise the waves weren’t as cold as he was expecting, in fact the water was almost warm.
“I’d enjoy it while you can, Vengeance and Christ like to provoke the sharks and that can be quite dangerous for you.” Shadows said next to him. Jimmy swore and jumped away from him, his heart pounding erratically. Shadows snorted, “A little jumpy aren’t we?”
Jimmy didn’t answer right away, he didn’t trust his voice not to squeak like a little girl’s. When he finally got his breathing somewhat under control he said shakily, “You were all the way out there at that sand bar babbling about ducks and then you show up right beside me? That’d scare the shit outta anyone.”
“I was not babbling about ducks.” Shadows said rolling his eyes. Jimmy managed to glare at him but he ignored it, “I do wonder what’s keeping Vengeance and Christ, they’re usually not gone this long.” He said mostly to himself. Jimmy’s heart finally settled and he moved deeper into the water so the waves lapped against his knees, “Are you three friends or something?” he asked. He wasn’t really expecting an answer but he wanted to know where the angel was in case he decided to pop up next to him again. Shadows appeared a little ways in front of him, back out on the sand bar Jimmy had seen him at, “You can call us friends, in a very loose sort of way.” He said. He raised his wings and the water made them look like they were covered with wet ink, he shook them out and then dropped them again. “I only trust them as far as I can throw them.” He continued.
“So you don’t trust them at all.” Jimmy said reaching down and picking up a pretty rose colored shell.
“Oh no, I can throw them both pretty far, but I wouldn’t trust them with my life, especially if someone were to make a game out of it.” With the last part of his sentence he appeared next to Jimmy again but he was expecting it and didn’t jump. Something sharp poked his foot and he looked down through the clear water. Reaching down he pulled up a medium sized shell. He turned the shell over in his hand and idly thought of giving it to his mother, the shade of pink was her favorite color. He scowled at it then and tossed it back into the waves.
“Someone you know?” Shadows asked watching him. Jimmy shook his head, “Thinking of my mom.” He muttered sullenly.
“Usually humans are quite fond of their mothers.” Shadows said. Jimmy ignored him and picked up a black stone, it looked like Shadows’ feathers. Shadows continued talking ignoring the fact that Jimmy was ignoring him, “Fathers are the ones humans tend to have issues with.”
“I’ve got an issue with him too.” Jimmy said absently.
“You’ve got a problem with everyone.” Shadows retorted. Jimmy glared at him again, “No, I have an issue with people that try to kill me and sarcastic angels.” He snapped. Shadows was unfazed, “So you have an issue with a lot of people.”
Jimmy didn’t respond and went back to looking for shells. He was waiting for Shadows’ next barb but the angel’s next words were tight and sent shiver down Jimmy’s spine that the hot sun couldn’t warm, “We need to go back, something is…not right.”
Before Jimmy could protest he felt a strong arm wrap around his waist and then the scenery blurred dizzily and then they were in a familiar run down hallway. He stayed close to Shadows even after he released him, “What’re we doin’ here?” he whispered.
The wiring in the apartment complex was a definite fire hazard and the bulbs that did work flickered like strobe lights. He’d never considered it creepy before but having people trying to kill him made the spastic shadow ominous. Shadows didn’t answer and instead crept slowly toward the open door of his apartment.
The door being open wasn’t that odd, his mother forgot to close it more times than not. The quiet coming from the room was odd thing, his mother was always making some kind of noise, the room was absolutely still. Hesitantly he followed Shadows as a ball of dread began to form in his stomach.
Shadows slipped in without touching the door, he seemed to almost fade through the parts of the wall and door that touched him. Jimmy gingerly pulled the door open hoping it wouldn’t squeak too much and slipped in as soon as the space was wide enough.
The place looked like a tornado had gone through it; furniture and debris was everywhere. The apartment was usually a mess, but it was never this bad. He didn’t see Shadows or the two demons and he didn’t hear them fluttering around either. He pushed them out of his mind for the moment and focused on looking over the damage. It didn’t look like anything had been taken, but there wasn’t really much to take; maybe his mom’s stash of pills but that was pretty much it.
Shadows appeared next to him, he didn’t look any different but he seemed much tenser than he had been.
“What’s up?” Jimmy asked, the destruction of the apartment didn’t particularly bother him, everyone had at least one break in every couple of months on their block; it was just a pain in the ass to get everything back in order.
“They’re isolating you.” The angel said softly. Jimmy looked at him confused, “Isolating?”
Shadows didn’t answer and instead faded away again, an uneasy feeling settled in Jimmy’s stomach. He left the kitchen and went to his room; everything was the same as it had been that morning. If someone robbed the place they had left his room alone, he stared and the slightly messy space and then backed out and closed the door. He took only a couple of steps and opened the door to his mom’s room. She kept her pills under her mattress, maybe one of her various one night stands had returned to clean her out.
He froze in the doorway; his breath caught in his throat and almost suffocated him. His mother was sprawled out on the floor any other time he would have just assumed that she had passed out but there was a halo of red around her and splashed on the wall. His breath pushed past the lump in his throat and it began ripping in and out of him in short puffs. His rubbery legs moved him forward and he collapsed next to her. Her face was almost peaceful, the haggard lines that he had seen since he was young were softened and she looked much younger than he remembered. He swallowed thickly and gently brushed a few strands of stray hair off her face, the image blurred as tears stung his eyes.
“I didn’t think they would go to such drastic measures so quickly.” Shadows’ soft voice said from somewhere behind him. Jimmy wiped his eyes but the tears didn’t stop, in the distance he heard sirens and knew they were coming for him. Silky feathers brushed his arms and then Shadows’ arms wrapped around him, Jimmy gave in to the childish impulse to hide from the horrific sight in front of him and buried his head in the angel’s shoulder. Smooth wings folded around him and then he felt the world shift and knew he was somewhere else. He didn’t move his head though, his breathing stuttered and the sharp sting of tears burned his eyes; he didn’t want to know where he was he wanted to forget everything that had happened. He wanted to wake up in his bed and have it all be a dream, he could deal with his mom drunk or messed up on pills, he just wanted to see her again.
Shadows was murmuring something in his ear, he could feel himself growing tired and more incoherent. He wrapped his arms around the angel’s neck and let himself sink into sleep.
Shadows’ POV
He would never admit it to anyone, he barely let him admit it to himself, but he was growing quite fond of the young human. He wasn’t sure what it was, he hadn’t known the boy even existed until almost a day ago, but he was drawn to him.
Usually humans annoyed him with their endless whining, but he rarely complained. Maybe his own bitterness was starting to wear away and he was finally seeing humanity the way most other angels saw it. He rolled his eyes at that thought, this wasn’t a Disney movie, his anger was imprinted on his very soul.
“Brooding again?” Vivian (1) asked lightly. Shadows scowled at him, Vivian was a high demon and his seer abilities were more advanced than any of the others. “How does my brooding concern you?” he asked gruffly, Vivian was also the only high demon Shadows could stand for any length of time. He pried the human’s arms off his neck and then set him down gently on his bed. His room in Dimmur was rarely used, sometimes he barely recognized it as he spent most of his time with Vengeance and Christ on the human plane causing trouble and hunting down Arch angels.
“It depends on where your brooding takes you.” The demon answered mildly. Shadows didn’t look at him and instead fluffed his feathers and made sure they were all in place, “And what futures do you see?” he asked in a disinterested tone. Vivian was quiet for a moment, “It’s the futures I can’t see that are bothering me.” He finally said. Shadows finally looked at him, he was used to other seers having muddled visions but Vivian’s were always clear and always accurate. The revelation that he couldn’t see someone’s path was almost unsettling, “Whose paths can you not see?”
“All associated with the human.” He said. Shadows growled, “I’m not in the mood for your games.”
“I’ve been having some trouble finding you, the last clear vision I had was when you decided to help the human after that it’s nothing but haze.” He looked at the human, his brow furrowed in thought, “As hard as I try I can’t get a clear picture of him only vague feelings.”
The human stirred in his sleep and Shadows absently brushed a hand down the side of his face to quiet him, “Have you ever had this problem before?” he asked looking at the demon again. Vivian shook his head, “Never, it’s quite unnerving, not to mention annoying.” He glanced at the human again, “He is important though Shadows, I don’t know what his fate is but it is somehow tied to all of us.”
Brian’s POV
He woke up disoriented and still in pain, his back felt as it was on fire and the weight of his wings felt like they were pulling the muscles off his back. He rolled onto his side gritting his teeth against a pained sound that was trying to bubble out of him. The room finally stopped spinning and he saw the small Healer tending to another angel’s bleeding arm.
Agony tore through him when someone grabbed his wing and pulled him onto his back again. A hoarse screech of pain ripped out of him and he heard the sharp voice of the Healer, “I spent the night and most of my energy reserves to heal him and pull him out of his coma, touch him like that again and you’ll heal yourself next time you quarrel with one of the Fallen.”
Bright spots danced in his eyes and his stomach lurched, he found Abel standing over him glaring at the Healer, “He is an Avenger, he will deal with the pain and complete his mission.” He turned his glare onto Brian, “He only has twenty-four hours left to eliminate the target.”
Icy fear raced through Brian and he again rolled onto his side and pushed himself up. The pain from his back faded a little with the adrenaline rush; the pain he was feeling now would be nothing compared to the agony of having his wings bound. He shakily got to his feet and without a word opened a portal to the earth plane and went to find James.
He stepped into an abandoned alley and as soon as the portal closed sank to his knees; when he was healthy he didn’t notice the small drain of power getting to the earth plane took, now he felt like he was going to collapse back into a coma. He struggled back to his feet and braced himself against a grimy wall.
“Brian, class Arch.” A small feminine voice called. He lifted his head and saw a small angel, he was guessing she was the reconnaissance agent sent to follow James.
“Where is he?” he pulled himself upright and tried to ignore the sharp ache coming from his back and wings. The small angel sighed, “I don’t know. We were trailing him but those damned demons,” she growled, “they attacked us and we lost him. My partner is out trying to pick up the trail again.”
Brian closed his eyes, he didn’t have time to track down this human, he had to find him and kill him and he had to do it before his strength left him, “Where is your partner looking?” he asked faintly. The angel’s brow wrinkled in worry, “The last I spoke to him he was in the Caribbean, but that was yesterday…”
Brian sighed, the demons Vengeance and Christ, had probably had their fun with him and he was more than likely dead somewhere, “Then that’s where I’ll start looking.” He said softly. The angel gave a curt nod and then opened a portal and stepped through to Eldur. Brian watched the portal close almost wistfully, he had a sinking feeling that the next time he went through a portal to Eldur Abel was going to be dragging him through it to have his wings bound.
Jimmy’s POV
When he woke up he had no idea where he was. He was on his side staring at what looked like a rock wall. He reached out a hand and ran his fingers down the rough surface, not truly believing what he was looking at; the rock was cool to the touch. He rolled over and came face to face with Shadows. He yelped and pushed himself away from him and sat up, “Where am I?” the room he was in was made of rock and stone, the low lights were hidden in various recesses in the rock and only kept the room from being completely dark. He couldn’t see the ceiling, but he had the feeling it was far above him.
“My quarters in Dimmur.” The angel said sitting up. Jimmy gave him a blank look, “I’m in hell?” he asked faintly. Shadows laughed, “Yes, you’re in hell.” He sat up and gracefully got off the bed, “Vengeance, Christ.” He called. From above he heard the faint flutter of wings and then the two demons landed, Shadows tossed his head toward the door and the two flickered out of sight.
“What was that all about?” Jimmy asked carefully getting off the bed. Shadows shrugged, “I like knowing what the angels are up to, Vengeance and Christ are excellent spies.” He stretched his wings and gave Jimmy a stern look, “I have some things to tend to, most here know that entering my quarters is a death wish but some like to tempt fate, if anyone comes in, hide.”
Jimmy nodded uncertainly, “How long will you be gone?” he asked quietly. Shadows shrugged, “However long it takes.” He said simply and then he slipped out the door and was gone. Jimmy stared at the door and then sat down on the bed again and flopped back with a sigh.
He could still feel the sting of his the loss of his mother in his chest, if anyone had asked him yesterday if he wanted to knock her off he probably would have asked them what their rates were. Now however tears stung his eyes again and he fleetingly thought of escaping in to sleep again but discarded the idea, if someone came in they would have no problem seeing him. He opted instead to occupy his mind with exploration of Shadows’ room, hopefully he would find something that could tell him more about the angry angel.
He sat up and hopped off the bed and started on the right. The room was sort of elliptical shaped and completely open and pretty barren. Exploring wasn’t going to occupy him long. Aside from bed there wasn’t any furniture, there were a couple of shelves made from the rocky wall. If they hadn’t been so smooth he would have thought they were natural indentations. The shelves were lined with old, thick leather bound books. He hesitated a second and then gingerly reached up and pulled down a dark green volume. There was a spring green silk ribbon marking a place in the middle.
He went back to the bed and carefully set the book down and opened it up to the marked page. He couldn’t read a word of it. The script was neat and elegant, but the words were meaningless to him, he skimmed the page and sighed; maybe he should have paid more attention in his foreign language class. He couldn’t even begin to place what language was in the book. Accepting defeat he closed the book and took it back to the shelf and selected another light blue one hoping for at least a sentence or two in English.
Again he saw the graceful writing but the words stayed elusive. He stepped back and scanned the shelves again hoping for something to jump out at him. A black and blue spiraled spine caught his eye and he eagerly pulled it out. There was no ribbon in this one so he opened to a random page and smiled happily when he finally saw words he recognized. He returned to the bed and set the book down and opened to a random page and settled in to wait for Shadows’ return
I met someone today, his name is Andreos, he’s an Avenger. I really like him, I mean, I like most of the angels but…he’s different. I like him…I like him I think more than I should. I shouldn’t even be writing this, if someone finds it we’ll both be punished. I don’t want him whipped because I can’t control myself. Abel is his mentor too, if he finds out he’ll probably kill him. I don’t like him, he scares me. He’s just so…cold, he doesn’t care about anything.
I met Andreos tonight, no one can know though. We shouldn’t be meeting like this, at this point we could both be executed. Writing down feelings in a journal is one thing, actually meeting him, touching him, kissing him…we could be killed. We will be killed if anyone finds out, unless it’s Abel. If Abel finds out he’ll probably have our wings bound, I get sick just thinking about that.
I’m scared, something’s happening to me and I don’t know who to tell or if I can even tell anyone. I’m so confused, what was right yesterday seems wrong today and vice versa. Andreos understands, but that’s the problem, Andreos is what has me confused. I’m meeting him again tonight, I’ll talk to him then; if I remember. I forget everything when he kisses me.
“And what are you doing here?” a low voice queried. Jimmy’s head snapped up so fast he was surprised he didn’t break his neck. He was so absorbed in the writing he hadn’t notice the shadow slip into the room. Leaning casually against the door a blond haired man looked him over critically, his midnight wings were held high with an almost regal air, “Dear little Shadows hasn’t had you cooped up in here long has he?” he purred. Jimmy couldn’t get his mind to work properly, he could feel his breathing coming in short, shallow pants he had no idea what to do. He should have been paying more attention, now he was trapped and he had a sick feeling in his stomach that fighting this angel would be a death sentence. The blond man pushed himself away from the door and ambled over to him, “Don’t tell me you can’t speak.” He said sitting down next to him, he tossed the book on to the floor carelessly, Jimmy stared at the book where it had fallen and tried to kick start his brain.
After a moment the angel sighed and moving faster than Jimmy’s eyes could follow the man’s hand flew up and cool fingers wrapped around his neck cutting off his air. Jimmy’s body finally unthawed with the threat of death and he started thrashing around like a fish out of water trying to pry the man’s fingers off. The man laughed, “See, you’ve got life in you yet.” His grip didn’t lessen at all, Jimmy kicked him as hard as he could in the side and his grip tightened even more, “That was not nice human.” He growled. Jimmy’s lung burned, distantly he could hear the sick gagging sounds he was making trying to draw a breath in, bright spots danced in front of his eyes and darkness crowded the edges.
The vice was ripped off his neck and he dropped off the bed and hit the floor with a jarring thud. The pain barely registered all he cared about was the cool, slightly damp air rushing in and out of his sore lungs. A screech of pain had him on his feet though stumbling back into the craggily wall. He wobbled for a second and then his legs gave out again and he sank to the floor.
A shadow fell over him and he cowered back.
“It’s me James.” Shadows’ husky voice said. His fear faded some and he looked around the room shakily, “Where’d he go?” he whispered. Shadows looked to the door, “Probably to tattle. Didn’t I tell you to hide?” he asked annoyed. Jimmy kept his eyes on the door, “I didn’t know he came in, you guys don’t exactly have to use the doors you know.” He said glaring up at him with the last part. Shadows sighed and when he shook his head his eye caught the discarded book on the floor, “Learn anything interesting?” he asked casually. Jimmy stayed on the floor with his knees drawn against his chest, “You didn’t say I couldn’t read.” He mumbled.
“No, I guess I didn’t.” the angel agreed. He walked over and picked the book up skimming over the page it was open to before closing it and putting it back on the shelf. As soon as the book was on the shelf the rock began to shift, almost as it was melting, and stretched over the shelves until all the books were covered with the living rock. Jimmy watched the scene almost without comprehension and then rested his forehead on his knees tiredly, “Definitely not in Kansas anymore.” He muttered.
“No you’re not, and going through people’s stuff here will get you killed.” Shadows said pointedly. Jimmy didn’t rise to the barb and closed his eyes, he was suddenly exhausted. He wanted to go home and sleep and wake up at home with his mom bitching at him and have everything go back to normal.
“What’s wrong James?” Shadows’ voice was as gentle as Jimmy had ever heard it, he looked up surprised and a little suspicious, “Jimmy.” He said after a moment of the two staring at each other. Shadows cocked his head to the side, “What?”
“I don’t like my full name.” He explained. Shadows nodded, “Fair enough; here stand up and let me see your neck.” He reached down and gently tugged Jimmy to his feet.
He was expecting Shadows’ hands to be cold and smooth like the other angel’s; he was surprised when warm, rough fingers gently tilted his chin up and ghosted across his skin. He was silent while Shadows inspected his sore neck but when he stepped away he ventured a question, “Why the mood change?” he tried to make it sound casual but it came out a little fearful. Shadows gave him a blank look and then he scowled, “What do you want Vivian?” he growled as another man faded through the door into the room.
Jimmy stepped back from him and hid a little more behind Shadows. The man didn’t spare him a glance, “You’re being summoned,” the black haired man said, “it would be beneficial for you to bring the human.” Now he did look at Jimmy, his expression unreadable, “Though I’m not sure how.” He growled. Jimmy took another step back. Shadows sighed, “Fine. I’m on my way.”
The man nodded once and then flickered out of sight. Shadows started for the door, “Come on, he doesn’t like to be kept waiting.” He said. Jimmy hesitated a second and then decided he would rather be with Shadows than alone.
He had no idea where he had been to start with and now Shadows was leading him through an absolute maze of rocks and stones of all types. The passageway they were in was extremely ornate, the floor was polished cherry colored marble that blended easily into tall peach hued pillars that stretched to the vaulted ceiling above. The ceiling was covered in a beautiful mural, he was almost certain it was the story of the original angels being cast out of heaven but they were moving quickly and he didn’t have the leisure to really study the art.
Shadows came to a stop in front of two blue-grey stone doors; two dark winged angels holding long staves topped with a shining blade looked him and Shadows over critically. Jimmy edged away from them but Shadows held his ground, “I was summoned, get out of the way.” He growled dangerously. Jimmy stared at him a little awed at his courage and blatant disrespect for the armed and armored men. The men glared at him a moment more and then stepped back and the doors opened. Shadows strode forward immediately but Jimmy hesitated again for only a second though, and then scampered after the angel.
The room was mostly in shadow, he couldn’t see the ceiling or really any of the walls, but it felt large and open. Shadows led the way to a raised dais with a large ornate throne. There was a brown haired man lounging in it, he seemed almost bored but when Shadows reached the first step he brightened and got up, “Shadows there is no reason to be rude to the guards.” He said shaking his head. Jimmy hung back and let the angel’s greet each other.
Now that the other man was standing he could see his wings, they weren’t the inky black he was becoming used to though, they were a deep burgundy. His flashing grey eyes caught Jimmy and he looked him over carefully, Jimmy fidgeted uncomfortably under the man’s direct gaze, it felt like he was looking inside him.
“You must be what all this fuss is about.” He said candidly, Jimmy flicked his gaze up for a second before returning it to the floor; he didn’t answer.
“Still silent even with your guardian angel next to you?” a familiar mocking voice from behind him made Jimmy jump and he backed up closer to Shadows. The blond man emerged from the darkness glaring at Shadows. The brunette rolled his eyes and ignored him for the most part, “I don’t think snapping his wing was necessary by the way.” He said. Shadows only shrugged, “He entered my quarters without permission and attacked my guest.”
“Any reason you were hiding you ‘guest’ from us?” the blond man hissed. Shadows bared his teeth and for the first time Jimmy noticed that he had fangs, not long, but sharpened canines that weren’t just for show. The other man growled and his wings fanned out making him look bigger.
“Children, let’s try to play nice.” The grey eyed man said dryly. Shadows relaxed a little and Jimmy scooted a little further away from the blond man who was still glaring death at Shadows.
“Mikael, I said enough.” The humor was gone from the brunette and his tone was icy. The blond backed off immediately. Jimmy watched them both warily the tension in the room was palpable. The brunette turned his attention to him and fear twisted his stomach, when he reached up a hand to brush Jimmy’s long bangs out of his face he jumped back.
“A little skittish isn’t he?” he laughed.
“He does have Avengers after him.” Shadows answered in a bored tone. The man turned to him in surprise, “Avengers? For what? He’s hardly a threat to anyone.” He looked Jimmy over again with the same probing glance.
“I have no idea, Vengeance caught them trailing him.” Shadows explained.
“And you decided to take him under your wing, how sweet. First demons and now humans? What’s next? Avengers themselves?” the blond man said sarcastically. Jimmy felt the tension mounting even more and wanted desperately to be out of the room.
“What better way to annoy the impeccable Avengers than to take their target and hide it from them?” Shadows countered with a deadly glare. The brunette man laughed, “What better way indeed.” He turned to the blond man, “I think a broken wing is punishment enough for entering someone’s quarters without permission and attacking a guest.” He waved his hand, “Dismissed.” He said, the blond man gaped at him for a second and then snarled something at Shadows and disappeared. Jimmy cowered back from him and searched the darkness for his form.
“Shadows, you did over react a little.” The brunette sighed, “You could have come to me, he would have been punished.”
“He was going to strangle him.” Shadows said with a touch of anger. The man sighed and looked at Jimmy again, “Why is it I’ve heard nothing about this boy?” He asked casually. Shadows shrugged, “I’ve not been back in awhile and…” he hesitated only a second but given the confident manner he had been addressing the other man it was marked, “Vivian says he can’t see him.”
The room was silent, the man stared at Shadows almost dumbfounded.
“It’s true.” Another voice said as the black haired man that had been in Shadows’ room flickered into existence, “He is…unclear.” He gave Jimmy another unreadable look and then addressed the two angels, “His paths are muddled, it’s almost like trying to see the bottom of a muddy puddle.”
“Can you see why Eldur would send assassins after him?” the brunette inquired. The black haired man’s brow furrowed, “Not really.” He paused a moment, “From what I can see, feel, he will be, he is, important.” He paused again and Jimmy could see him struggling to articulate his thoughts, “He…” he glanced at Jimmy, “it’s never been so confused before,” he muttered and then continued, “he is a keystone, the hinge of this war and he will decide our fates.” He finally said. There was a light sheen of sweat on his features and Jimmy wondered what ability he had that could tax him so thoroughly. He also wondered what the hell he was talking about, the only thing he had ever been pivotal in was his parent’s divorce and that was only for child support checks. He gave the three questioning looks but they were ignoring him.
The room was silent again before the brunette blew out a breath, “Shadows, dismissed. Leave Mikael alone.” He added as the black winged angel turned to leave. Shadows nodded absently and Jimmy didn’t hesitate to follow him out of the dark room.
They returned to Shadows’ room in silence and even when they were in the room Jimmy was afraid to break the stillness but finally his curiosity got the best of him, “Who was that?” he ventured quietly. Shadows, who was laying on the bed with his eyes closed, didn’t move, “Who was who?” he asked. Jimmy sat down on the edge of the bed, Shadows’ massive wings were splayed out behind him and took up most of the room, “The man we went to see with the brown hair.” Absently he reached over and fixed a twisted feather. Shadows snorted quietly and opened his eyes, “He has two names, like most of us, his name before he fell was Lucifer, now most call him Satan.”
Jimmy felt the breath go out of his lungs, his fingers went cold where they still rested on Shadows’ wing. Shadows laughed at his expression and closed his eyes again still smiling, “You knew you were in hell, I don’t see why this is such a surprise.” He still sounded like he was laughing. Jimmy shook off some of the shock and stroked the silky feathers under his fingers, “I wasn’t expecting…that…I guess.” He said quietly. Shadows sighed contently, “Let me guess, you thought he would have horns and a tail correct?”
Jimmy shrugged, even though the angel looked like he was dozing off, “I didn’t think I would meet the devil.” An involuntary shiver went through him and Shadows opened his eyes again, “Relax Jimmy, you’re not cursed or anything. Although you’ve certainly earned Mikael’s enmity.”
“Why’d he attack?” Jimmy shivered again and the feathers disappeared from under his fingers as Shadows sat up, “He doesn’t like me.” He said simply, one of the large wings folded around Jimmy’s shoulders, they were heavy and warm. Jimmy scooted a little closer to him, “He doesn’t like you so he tried to kill me?” he looked at the angel incredulously. Shadows shook his head, “Mikael is older than me, but I’m stronger, out of fear or jealousy he goes out of his way to indirectly attack me since I could easily kill him in a direct confrontation.” He explained. Jimmy relaxed more into his wing and despite everything felt safe.
After a moment Shadows’ wing pulled back and folded behind him once again and he got off the bed. The feeling of safety vanished with the warmth of his feathers, “Where are you going?” he asked timidly, the angel had been being unusually kind to him since the attack and he wasn’t sure when his good mood would vanish. The angel turned back, “I’ll be back in a moment, you’re safe.” He finished gently. Jimmy relaxed some and he faded from sight.
He really was only gone for a few minutes, Jimmy spent the time staring at the door apprehensively until he came back in. He was holding a golden chalice in his hand, he offered it to Jimmy. Timidly Jimmy took the cup from him, “What is it?” he asked sniffing the liquid.
“Falernian.” Was all he said. Jimmy looked up at him bemused, “What is that?” he sniffed it again, it didn’t smell bad, it had an almost flowery scent actually. Shadows sat down again and his wing again fell behind him comfortingly, “It’s a sweet white wine, favored by Roman nobles. It’ll take the edge off your nerves.” He explained. Jimmy nodded and took a tiny sip of the cool brew the taste was indeed sweet with just enough tang to keep it from being overly so. He took a longer sip, it tasted as flowery as it smelled. His previous drowsiness was quickly increasing and he wondered how the Romans got anything done, this stuff could knock out a horse. He looked at Shadows sleepily, the chalice was suddenly heavy in his hands and he was afraid he would drop it. Shadows gently took the cup from him and set it on the floor and surprisingly pulled him against his warm body. Jimmy didn’t question the comforting gesture and snuggled against him and let sleep over take him.

A/N: I’m alive! Happy Easter by the way =D Though this story is going to be relatively short, maybe eight chapters, there’s an excellent chance it won’t be finished until school’s out so bear with me. Once again, thank you for your patience and reviews =D
