The eyes of a Maneater were what scared Frank the most. Once a human was changed, their eyes would bleed red into the whites; and if you caught one old enough, it would have seeped into the irises, replacing the original color with a mucky brown. But no matter the age of the Maneater, the human spirit was gone and in its place, a ravenous animal whose hunger was never sated; no matter how much flesh and blood was devoured.
Ever since his first encounter with Maneaters; when he hadn’t really understood what kind of demons they actually were, he had still been frightened of their eyes. Once he found out their true nature, the fear that now only bothered him in his dreams came to life in his waking reality.
But thankfully, close to six years ago, he had gotten away from that reality to a more peaceful one. The best thing, he believed, to ever happen to him was meeting the Way brothers and their friends. He really wished it had stayed that way.
The shock of what he just went through was reverberating through is body in an uneven rhythm. Frank couldn’t quite believe that what had just happened was reality; it had been too much like one of his nightmares to be in any way true.
It had happened so fast. One moment he was watching Gerard crawl like a lizard up to where Ray was waiting on the hilltop to look at the damage, and the next, Bob was calling out to him as a heavy weight slammed into his body.
Frank vaguely remembered Mikey calling to him, but he had been too focused on the eyes of the creature looming over him. He had said, “Oh God,” before the thing lunged forward with its pointed teeth and crazed features. Frank whimpered and prepared himself for the painful death that was sure to arrive. Then suddenly, Bob was there, frantically pulling at the monster that was trying to take a bite out of him.
“Fuck!” Bob said in a yell filled with a deep panic. Frank full-heartedly agreed with him on that statement. ‘Fuck, indeed.’
Frank and Bob were both frozen when the Maneater’s head seemed to explode in a fountain of blood and brains. It took Frank a moment to figure out just what the hell happened, before Mikey was pulling him up.
Both he and Bob were covered in the creature’s contaminated body matter. Frank could taste its metallic sludge sliding down the back of his throat. He coughed and quickly vomited after pushing Mikey away, falling to the ground on his hands and knees. Once he was finished, he slumped to the side of his mess then rolled further away from it.
He watched with the numbed shock as the third boy followed the second Maneater after it had bounded past them with amazing speed. Ray called after the stunned kid but was ignored.
The rain was coming down heavier than it was when Frank was first attacked, and he welcomed the downpour; hoping it would clean up some of the mess covering him. It seemed like he was miles away as he listened to Bob yelling at Ray and Ray yelling back; Mikey chose just to yell at everyone. Gerard remained strangely silent.
It took a moment to figure out that his best friend wasn’t there. ‘Oh God,’ rang like a sick echo inside Frank’s head. Gerard had been eaten. That’s when he started to cry; deep racking sobs that paralyzed his body and suffocated his lungs. Frank felt his body curl up in a ball, before Mikey was pulling him up from the ground.
“Did you swallow? Huh, did you?!” Mikey yelled in his face and shook Frank when he stared back blankly.
It was someone groaning in pain that pulled Frank’s attention away from Mikey and down the rocky slope of the mountain. And there he was, clutching around his middle with a grimace on his face. Frank let out a sob of relief and pulled himself from Mikey’s grasp to partially throw himself off the giant rock and into the arms of his Gerard.
Frank let himself bask in the warmth of his best friend and tried to ignore the conversation that the others were having about him. Gerard, he felt, was trying to persuade them to wait before trying to cure Frank; until they got past the summit.
It was as the others were debating over the issue, that Frank suddenly remembered one small detail that had been overlooked during the surprise attack, moments earlier. He felt the fear and tears return full-force as he forced the words out of his mouth. “How could they? It’s - it’s day, G. It’s day.” He said around the tears and saliva drowning him.
Gerard stiffened up at his words and, if it was possible, pulled Frank further into his embrace. “Shit,” was whispered chillingly into his ear.
Seconds later, Gerard was pulling away and tugging Frank up to the summit, ignoring the guys' cries of protest behind them. Fear was pushing them forward, the kind of fear that grips you when something that you relied upon to never happen, did; in a way that left you staggering in its midst.
Maneaters weren’t supposed to be able to travel during the day. And they definitely shouldn’t be able to pass themselves off as fully human, either. But that’s exactly what just happened. They were no longer safe. They had to hide.
Seconds after they climbed over the summit to the other side of the small mountain, Gerard came to a complete stop and said in a much clipped tone to his brother, “Well, are you going to give him the serum or not?” When Mikey made no move to answer, Gerard continued, sounding angrier the more he talked. “What are you waiting for!? You were the one who was demanding that we give it to him right away!”
Mikey finally started digging in his bag, a scowl gracing his features. Gerard turned away, not wanting to see the needle that would be giving Frank the preventative, but continued holding the shorter man’s hand.
Ray helped Mikey measure out the dosage. Frank felt himself stiffen up as the younger Way came up to him and, with little remorse, shoved the small needle into his neck. The serum burned under his skin with a choking heat. Gerard gave a small gasp at how hard Frank had been squeezing his hand.
Almost immediately, Frank felt a wave of heart-staggering heat wash through his system, making him stumble into Gerard’s waiting arms. Then seconds later, he was shaking from the chills traveling along his insides. He was going to be a complete mess for the rest of the day.
Gerard struggled to help him the rest of the way down, hissing in pain every time Frank bumped into his side. Bob offered to help Frank down instead, but only got yelled at by Gerard; no one else offered after that.
The ground was passing under Frank’s feet in a nauseating blur once they reached flatter ground. Gerard switched him to his other side when it became clear that Frank could no longer keep himself up, letting the ill man lean his weight against him.
Things continued to pass in a blur for a while, before Gerard finally stopped at what looked like a deep crevasse dug into the ground. The rain had made a small pool at the bottom and Frank was very unwilling to climb inside, but Bob and Ray were already covering it with stray branches off the trees that surrounded them.
Gerard had already pulled off his bag and was trying to help Frank remove his, but gave up after only two tries. It was obvious that the younger boy was in pain. Frank tried to reassure him, but only ended up vomiting onto the muddy forest floor.
Mikey was the one who ended up helping Frank with his bag, and then down into the narrow pool of murky water. He looked at his sick friend and mumbled a soft ‘sorry,’ before disappearing to help his brother. Frank was confused for a moment at the appoligy, but figured that Mikey was feeling guilty for insisting that Frank take the serum.
Frank was left to stand in freezing water that reached up to his thighs, black dots clouding his vision. Right as he thought he’d be passing out and drowning an embarrassing death, Gerard was there and helping him to stay afoot.
“I know it’s hard, but you’ve got to try and stay awake as long as you can, ok?” he murmured, one hand pressing into the side of his body with the cracked ribs, and the other reaching to Frank and pulling him closer. Ray, Bob and Mikey slipped under the crappy, make-shift shelter and they waited in a shivering mass for the sun to set.
