When the bus finally pulled to a stop Raven was two seconds from going stir crazy. They had a couple hours until sound check and in that time they were doing a signing and she couldn’t wait for it. Not only was she anxious to see how the fans would react to her new body up close and personal she just loved meeting them. “Zacky, Raven, whoever the fuck you are, chill out! We’ve still got half an hour.” Matt laughed, to her surprise, he easily picked her up and deposited her on the couch where Brian and Jimmy had been earlier. She huffed and crossed her arms and pouted, Matt pulled his hat on and made a cooing sound when he saw her face. She stuck her tongue out and flipped him the bird before going back to pouting. He chuckled as he collapsed next to her, “Hey,” he said nudging her a little, “no matter what happens today we’re with you okay?”
Dropping the pouting act Raven smiled and hugged him, “Thanks Matty.” One of his arms circled her waist pulling her closer. Her cheek pressed against his warm skin, he smelled like Black Magic, his favorite incense, and cologne. The small touch sent sparks racing up through her and her smile widened though she wasn’t entirely sure why. Would it be weird if she sat on his lap? The feeling was so pleasant she almost started pouting again when he pulled away to answer his phone.
“Hel—” whoever was on the other end didn’t wait for him to finish before launching into a screaming tirade. Matt held the phone in front of him bewildered. Raven recognized Valary’s voice as she continued to yell. Snickering she got up, “I’ll let you handle that.” She gave the singer a quick kiss on the cheek and scurried to the back where Johnny was napping and Jimmy and Brian were playing a video game. Matt scowled at her and started the long process of calming the irate woman down.
The signing wasn’t too bad, for the most part the fans were still trying to get a feel for who she was and if she was going to be up for touring. It was humbling to see how protective the kids were of them and how loyal. They were definitely putting her through the gauntlet but once she proved herself worthy of taking her male form’s place they readily accepted her. She was actually enjoying the challenge, it was just like the old days before Waking the Fallen and Sounding the Seventh Trumpet; fighting for her place in the music world, proving that she could indeed run with the big dogs.
“Having fun?” Jimmy asked during a brief pause in the flow, Raven flashed him a smile, her cheeks were a little flushed from the heat in the room and her eyes were alight with happiness, “Hell yeah.”
The drummer chuckled and the next girl approaching the table smiled shyly. A boy, she guessed, her date for the night was right behind her gently encouraging her to move forward. Raven gave her a friendly smile, they weren’t going to bite. Well, Jimmy might…maybe they should put him in the middle instead of the beginning, she mused while the drummer scrawled his signature across her Waking the Fallen booklet. He might be rail thin but his six foot five frame could be pretty intimidating, especially when his volatile and loud personality was added to the mix.
The girl made it past him though and more confidently stepped in front of Raven, “You’re the new girl, Venom?” she asked while she signed. Raven finished her name and smiled at her again, “Yep.” She handed the girl back her booklet.
“You’re really pretty.” She said quickly. Then the creepy guy from the night before pushed into her line of sight. She’d been so focused on the shy girl she hadn’t noticed Jimmy stiffen next to her. Now the tension from her band mates was thick enough to suffocate. The girl backed up a little confused at the sudden change in their demeanor. Raven gave her a small reassuring smile, she would feel terrible if the girl went away thinking she had said something wrong. She smiled back briefly but it turned to a frown when she focused on the creepy man that had pushed her out of the way.
“What do you want?” Raven asked. Mentally she patted herself on the back when her voice came out calm and even a little annoyed. The man smiled at her in what he probably thought was an arresting way but with his thin bleached lips and glittery eyes it was simply scary. Matt, on her other side, growled but the man ignored him and kept all of his creepy focus on her.
“I was wondering if a lovely lady would sign my chest?” he said. Goosebumps, and not the pleasant kind, broke out on her arms and she tried to make her voice cool and even, “I don’t sign bodies.” Her voice wavered the tiniest bit but it was cold and the man’s eyes narrowed, “Why not?” he retorted.
“Because she says she doesn’t.” One of the boys that had reached the end of the line called back.
“I don’t blame her either you fuckin’ creep.” The shy girl snapped with an unexpected amount of malice. The man looked around as if he only just realized they weren’t alone. He scowled at everyone, but security was already on the way over to take him away. He didn’t resist when the two beefy guys gently took him by his upper arms and led him out of the room and hopefully off the premises.
Once he was gone the room relaxed and the shy girl stepped forward over to Matt.
“Thanks.” Raven said quietly signing the next thing in front of her. The girl looked back and smiled, “We girls have to watch each others’ backs.” And then she was on to Johnny.
A warm glow stayed with her for the rest of the signing and through her pre-show warm-ups. The show was shaping up to be much more pleasant than the one last night, the fans now knew her and knew she would be there and at the signing they seemed to accept her.
Stepping out on the stage confirmed her musings, the atmosphere was pretty much back to normal and they show got off without a hitch. The creepy man either wasn’t there or he was hiding someplace where she couldn’t see him. It was almost like everything was normal again.
After the show they decided to celebrate and since they had two days to be at the next show they were free to bar hop until closing time. Raven walked into the bar still excited from the show but her enthusiasm quickly faded.
Within fifteen minutes of her entrance two drunks had already hit on her and a third was in progress. She sighed at did her best to ignore his slurred pick up lines and focused more on her Jack and coke. Brian, who had been on the other side of the bar partying with some of their fans wandered over and effectively told the drunk to beat feet before sitting down next to her, “You don’t look like you’re having fun.” He observed. Raven shrugged, “I’ve had better nights.” She said with a small smile. Brian hugged her briefly, “Just tell ‘em to piss off.” He said waving toward the next group of guys that were eyeing her. “They do it to Johnny all the time.”
When she finally laughed he gave her a final hug and returned to his party group. She sat alone at the bar for another half hour before getting fed up with the unrelenting flow of inebriated suitors. She paid her tab and headed for the door, “Jimmy!” she yelled over the music and loud chatter of the other patrons. The drummer turned around and gave her a goofy smile and she laughed, “Don’t drink too much, I’m heading back to the bus.” She reached up and gave him a kiss on the cheek before heading out into the night.
Brian looked around for Raven and frowned when he didn’t see her on her stool. He’d been keeping an eye on her all night worried about her dejected demeanor and watching for any overly touchy-feely drunks. He shook himself a little; she probably went to the bathroom. He promised himself if she wasn’t back in ten minutes he would start asking around.
Fifteen minutes passed and she still didn’t show up. He excused himself from the rowdy crowd he’d been with all night and started looking for the rest of the band. He saw Matt first but the singer was too busy looking around to notice him. Great. Matt hadn’t seen her either. He ducked into the V.I.P. section where Johnny was hanging out.
The little bassist probably hadn’t seen her either; he was totally absorbed with the pretty blond attached to his mouth. Still, he had to know and he also had to fuck with the little guy. He flicked the side of his head and after a second he pulled away from the girl and looked up at him. His eyes were glazed with drink and arousal, the blond looked him over and smiled coyly. He gave her a vague smile and turned his attention to the bassist, “Johnny, have seen you seen Raven?”
He looked around dazedly and shook his head. Brian rolled his eyes, “Be careful Johnny.” He murmured, mostly to himself, hugging his head against his chest for a second. Then he left Johnny to his blond and alcohol and went to find Jimmy.
The drummer was, naturally, the closest to the bar and surrounded by people. Brian shook his head affectionately as he pushed through the crowd. Jimmy had always been able to draw a crowd, especially when there was alcohol involved, being famous just made the crowd a little bigger. Judging by the look on the bar tender’s face he was getting close to his cut off point.
“Jimmy,” the drummer spun around too fast and teetered for a moment before regaining his shaky balance, “how much have you had to drink?” Brian laughed. The drummer shrugged and happily took the drink someone passed him. Brian signaled another drink from the bar tender and smoothly switched the two before the drunk man noticed. He set the other drink on the bar and the man dutifully dumped it in the sink.
“Jimmy have you seen Raven?” he asked slowly holding the drummer’s head between his hands, forcing him to focus on him. Jimmy blinked and nodded hazily, “Bus.” He yelled. He pulled his head away from him and returned to his adoring crowd. Brian felt like he’d been kicked, he reached up and grabbed Jimmy again, “She went back to the bus? Jimmy, when!” he yelled. Anger flashed in Jimmy’s eyes for a moment before something finally clicked in his foggy mind. “Dunno, said she goin’ back to bus.” He staggered a little and almost fell on the guitarist. Brian cursed, “Dammit, Jimmy! Why the fuck didn’t you go with her?” he yelled. Part of the drummer’s mind was sober enough to realize he had really screwed up.
The crowd started to drift away when one of the bouncers moved a little closer. Brian ignored him, “When did she leave Jimmy?”
“Don’t ‘member.” He slurred.
“What’s up Brian?” Matt asked. Brian took his attention away from grilling his friend and noticed they now had a very wide berth from the crowd and both the bouncers and bartender were watching them intently.
“Raven went back to the bus,” He shot the no longer jovial Jimmy a deadly glare, “an unknown time ago.”
Matt sucked in a breath, “Dammit Jimmy.”
“Sorry.” He whimpered. Brian’s anger faded a little. Jimmy was pretty deep in the alcohol, he couldn’t expect him to be at the top of his game. He would apologize later though. “Take him over to the V.I.P. with Johnny, I’m heading back to the bus.” He said to Matt. He tossed down a couple of bills on the counter and made a hasty exit while Matt coaxed Jimmy toward the roped off section of the bar.
Raven decided, while walking down a particularly creepy bit of sidewalk, she should have asked someone to come with her. The venue was a good fourteen blocks away and then she still had to go through the deserted parking lot to get to their bus. They weren’t in the best part of town either.
The sidewalk was cracked and warped, it seemed like every other streetlight was burned out and most of the buildings were boarded up and covered in graffiti. She walked quickly hoping the fourteen blocks weren’t as far as they sounded.
Almost halfway back to the bus she decided she would go back to the bar and ask Matt or Brian to walk her back. She stopped and turned around and her heart leapt into her throat, only half a block away were three large guys. They stopped too and for a moment they stared at each other in shock. Raven recovered herself first; asking what they wanted was something reserved for movies and especially dense women. She turned and started running for the bus for all she was worth. The men’s once silent footsteps now thundered behind her.
The lyrics for Scream echoed through her head and she decided she absolutely hated them as she ran. Five blocks left. Out of one of the alleys a man stepped out, she was too close to avoid him and ran straight into his burly arms. She shrieked and kicked at him but he only laughed, “You are a pretty little thing aren’t ya’.” His two fellow caught up to him huffing and puffing, “I like a girl with stamina.” One of them leered. Raven spit on him and bit the one holding her. He let go with a curse and backhanded her before she could take off again. She hit the ground dazed with her ears ringing. An echo of the nightmare flashed through her mind. Someone dragged her up by her hair, the sharp jerk of pain brought her senses back into focus and she started struggling again.
The three of them easily pulled her into the dark and dirty alley. She screamed again and got a solid right hook to the stomach. Darkness crowded her vision and for one terrifying moment she didn’t think she would be able to breathe again. Finally she took a shallow shuddering breath and whimpered. She still couldn’t move though, she couldn’t keep them from slicing her shirt off with a pocket knife or pulling her pants down. They easily flipped her over onto her stomach and finally her body decided to obey her. Through the dull ringing in her ears she heard a zipper being pulled down. Weight settled painfully on her thighs and her panties were pulled down.
The weight suddenly disappeared from her body and she flipped over onto her back and pulled her pants up before trying to scramble to her feet but her legs turned to rubber and she fell before she was halfway up. She backed up against one of the grimy walls and swung violently at the man rushing at her. She felt a tiny wave of triumph when her fist connected solidly with the guy’s temple. He stumbled to the side and fell heavily and didn’t move. She was on guard again when another one came at her, this one caught her wrists in a steel grip and as much as she struggled she couldn’t get free. She cursed and screamed at him and tried to kick him in the balls but he was sitting on her lap.
The thug pulled her against his chest and after a moment she began to cry. His skin smelled like Black Magic and cologne.
“Hush baby, we’re here. We’re here.” Matt crooned softly. He let go of her wrists and she held him tightly.
“Jesus Christ.” Brian groaned from next to her. She peeked at him from over Matt’s arm and bit her lip, “Sorry Brian.” She whispered. The other guitarist struggled into a sitting position and gave her a rueful smile, “S’okay. Think you knocked me sober.” He reached up and gingerly touched his temple and grimaced. Matt pulled back a little and quickly stripped his shirt off and put it on her. Gratefully she wrapped her arms around herself holding the soft material closer. Matt got up and easily pulled her small quaking frame into his arms, “C’mon baby.” He murmured nuzzling her cheek.
Tears still cut warm tracks down her cheeks but she actually felt safe with her two friends. She looked over Matt’s shoulder and when they turned the corner out of the alley she tucked her head under his neck. The final five blocks to the bus were peaceful, Raven actually dozed off a little. She woke up when Matt set her down on the back couch, with worried eyes she watched him disappear through the door. He came back a few minutes later with clothes, a towel, and a bowl of water.
“Get changed, I’ve gotta talk to Syn but I’ll be right back.” He murmured kissing her cheek. She nodded once he was gone again she took off her dirty undergarments and quickly put on clean ones. If she could put a lock on them she would have; a shudder ran through her. She put on the shirt Matt brought her, then changed her mind and put his back on. She held the fabric up to her nose and inhaled deeply.
Matt came back in and gave her a questioning look, “Did I get the wrong shirt?” he asked kneeling in front of him. She shook her head but didn’t trust herself to speak yet to explain. Matt let it drop and wet the towel, “This is gonna sting a little, there’s rubbing alcohol in it.” He murmured. She held as still as possible while he dabbed at the cut on her cheek and eye. When he finished that he handed her an ice pack which she pressed gingerly against the side of her face. Carefully he took her hands and wiped them free of alley grime. When he was done he kissed her forehead, “I’ll be right back.” He murmured. She nodded and huddled in a small ball at the end of the couch.
Before he returned she faintly heard the door open and close and after a few seconds Brian was in front of her looking her over, “Oh baby.” He whispered. Gentle lips pressed against her temple and he sat down next to her.
“Are they still alive?” her voice was a little hoarse and barely more than a whisper but Brian heard and after a moment slowly nodded.
“Yeah, but if I hadn’t been there I’m pretty sure he would’ve killed them.” He said slowly.
“You’re fucking right I would.” Matt said angrily coming in. He had put on a shirt and changed into basketball shorts, his usual sleepwear. His hands were clean, which meant he had washed them, probably when he gotten the stuff together for her. She shuddered. Matt didn’t sit down immediately but stood a little further away, “I won’t hurt you Raven.” He said quietly, his previous anger completely gone. She looked up at him surprised, “I know.” She smiled a little and felt her split lip tug uncomfortably, “It’s actually kinda nice knowing you’ll murder anyone that hurts me.” The three in the alley probably wouldn’t be found until morning and she had a feeling they wouldn’t be getting to the hospital on their own. Brian snorted and Matt smiled too and finally sat down on the other side of Brian, “How’re Jimmy and Johnny?” he yawned. Brian sighed, “Johnny is too drunk to know which way is up and Jimmy is…” he waved a hand, “he’ll be fine when he’s sober.”
“Are we gonna have to watch him?” Matt asked sharply. Jimmy’s dynamic personality became almost bi-polar when he drank which could be dangerous if he was upset. Brian had pulled a gun out of his hand more than once while he was too heavy in the booze and down on himself.
“I’ll sleep with him tonight.” The guitarist said. And with that he kissed her forehead one last time before getting up.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Raven blurted before he disappeared through the door. He turned back and smiled, “I’ve been hit harder,” he winked at her and left. Matt watched him go and sighed, “I don’t know how he does it.” He mused. Raven scooted over to curl against his side, “Don’t know how he does what?” she murmured. The Black Magic scent was stronger on the shirt he had on now, undiluted by his cologne. Matt shook his head, “How he can just shrug off Jimmy’s various attempts at suicide like it’s nothing special. ‘He’ll be fine when he’s sober.’ Fuck, if that was me I’d never let him drink again.” He chuckled. Raven smiled and closed her eyes; the heavy arm around her shoulders made her feel safe and now the night was catching up to her and she was exhausted.
“Time for bed, baby?” Matt murmured. Raven nodded, “Can I sleep with you?” she asked suddenly looking up at him with her best puppy eyes, which, given her night, was not hard to pull off. Matt blinked and hugged her close, “Yeah, sure.” He got up and pulled her up. He let her precede him while he turned off the lights.
Collapsing into Matt’s lower bunk she was almost too tired to feel embarrassed about sleeping with the singer. The entire bunk was heavy with Matt’s scent and she relaxed even more and curled on her side with her face buried in his pillow.
The bus was completely darkened when Matt rolled in next to her. For a brief second she went rigid with fear but shook herself, the men were still lying in the alley and she was safe on the bus with her friends. Matt wrapped an arm around her middle and held her close, mostly because the bunk was so narrow but also because he was just cuddly like that.
“Night Matty,” she yawned.
“Night.” He whispered against her ear. The gesture sent a delightful chill through her.
A/N: *Evil Smile* Yes, delightful indeed…
Zack: What are you doing now?
Zip: Oh, you’ll find out.
Jimmy: I don’t like the sound that…
