The girl staring at her from the bed looked completely dazed and confused. Lowering her arms from the air, Carrie placed them securely at her sides and cautiously eyed her wife.
Kelly's eyebrows scrunched together. “Where am I?” She wondered, glancing down at the cast on her left arm.
Carrie swallowed and responded carefully. “You're in the Hospital, you were in a car accident.” She explained carefully.
Kelly nodded in understanding, continuing to eye the country singer curiously. “What are you doing here? Were you in the car with me?”
“I um...” She stammered, slowly stepping towards the stand where Kelly's personal belongings sat in the zip lock bag.
“Were we on our way to the studio?”
Carrie squeezed her eyes shut as she reached out blindly for the zip lock bag, quietly taking it into her hand and keeping it out of the Texans sight. After a couple of moments of silence, as she let the realization of what was happening sink in, she opened her eyes.
“Yeah, we were on our way to the studio.” She lied, locking her hands together behind her back. “I uh...I should go tell the Doctor you're awake or something. I'll be back.” She said quickly, excusing herself from the room.
As she stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind her, she immediately collapsed against it, her breathing shallow. She had been focusing on trying to catch her breath and fight off the tears that were soon to fall that she didn't notice her in-laws approaching her.
“Care, did something happen...” Jason asked cautiously, releasing Ashley's hand as he stopped in front of her.
Carrie managed to shake her head as she pushed away from the door. “He told us it could happen.” She breathed out, fresh tears staining her cheeks.
“Who told you what?” Ashley questioned.
Carrie wiped at her eyes. “She doesn't know...she doesn't remember...” She whispered more so to herself than to any of three people currently surrounding her.
Alyssa reached out and took her hand. “Sweetie, what's going on?”
She took a deep breath. “Kelly...she...the Doctor was right, she's seems to be experiencing some memory loss. The good news is she know who I am, the bad news is she basically thinks we're back in 2007...which would mean, she doesn't know we're married, she doesn't know about Lyra...” She paused and looked between Jason and Ashley, “And you two weren't together yet.” She finished, watching the two of them pull further apart.
“What makes you think she believes it's five years ago?” Jason asked curiously.
Carrie sighed. “She asked me if we were in an accident on the way to the studio. The only time Kelly and I have been to the studio together was when Clive forced that collaboration on us back then. That, and the fact that she looked completely lost when she was looking at me and wondering why I was here.”
“Shit.” Jason muttered under his breath.
“I need to go talk to Dr. Coleman. Y'all should go in and see her, I'm sure she'd love that. Just be careful about what you say to her...until we're completely certain.” She suggested.
“Yeah, of course.” They all agreed before slipping into the room, leaving Carrie out in the hall. Glancing down at the bag in her hand she released a deep sigh before making a move towards the elevators.
++Five years earlier++
Currently she was seated alongside her manager at a conference meeting with her record label. She had always hated these meetings for the simple fact that she never saw the point in them. Why would someone be asked to join in on a meeting where decisions were made for them, often times against their will, rather than being allowed to add their own input? Today was no different for her than any of the other days.
Chewing on the end of her pen, she pretended to be paying attention and interested in what the men gathered around the table were discussing. She heard numbers being tossed around, figures being compared, and choices being made for her without the slightest sound from her mouth.
Jeff was trying to fight for her, he truly was, and she appreciated him greatly for that, but she wasn't sure if it was enough anymore. Every individual surrounding the conference table was ultimately trying to steer her career in a direction they wanted it to go, not where she wanted to take it.
"We could have Kelly out in Nashville by the end of next week." Someone said.
Nashville? Her ears perked up then because she had clearly tuned them out until that moment. What would she want to go to Nashville for? What was it that she needed there?
She finally spoke up. "Nashville?" All eyes were on her now for the first time since the meeting had started.
"Yes, Nashville. Carrie is usually down there; it would just make more sense for you to travel there than to drag her and her people down here."
Her eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. "Carrie? Carrie who?"
"Underwood. Have you even been listening?," Jeff asked quietly under his breath as he reached out and took the pen from her hand in an attempt to prevent any further distraction.
"Why would I go to Nashville to see Carrie Underwood?," she questioned curiously, turning to Jeff.
Jeff sighed. "Obviously not," he mumbled, replying to his own previously asked question.
Clive practically glared at the Texan from where he sat on the other end of the table.
"You're going to meet with Carrie in Nashville and record a song together. We think it could help draw in an entirely different fan base for you and potentially help boost your album sales."
Kelly felt her jaw tighten. "My album sales are fine thank you," she said through gritted teeth. She truly despised that man.
"Sorry Kelly, but it's already done," Clive told her as he pushed up from the table. "We'll book you a flight for sometime next week. Jeff, I'll have my assistant email you the details." Clive moved towards the door to exit.
"Wait," Kelly called out, causing him to freeze where he stood in the open doorway. "Shouldn't Carrie and I get to know each other beforehand? I think I've only met the girl like once."
Clive chuckled. "This is the music industry Kelly, people don't need to get to know people or become their friends to work with them; it's business." And on that note Clive finally left the conference room.
"It would help," Kelly muttered under her breath as she pushed up from the table and faced Jeff. Jeff waited until the other execs exited the room before he started to try and bargain with her.
Before Jeff even turned to face her he knew she was already standing. When he did finally turn towards her he knew he was about to get an earful. With her arms crossed Kelly firmly planted one foot before her in a stand-off like stance as Jeff approached her.
"You barely even tried," she accused, "You just sat there while they planned out a career move for me, one that I don't want to take." She said stubbornly.
Jeff sighed, "Kelly I did the best I could here. I fought," he paused and cleared his throat, "We fought hard for My December, we did, and I know they didn't give it much of a chance but-"
She let out a huff of laughter and cut him off, "They didn't give it much of a chance? Lets try they didn't give it a chance at all. They're always so quick to jump and expect the worst from me, I'm sick and tired of this bullshit. The album just came out and already they're giving up on how successful it'll be." She spat out before shifting and leaning against the table.
"Maybe working with Carrie will draw some of her demographic into your territory, Kelly. It's not a bad idea."
She narrowed her eyes at him, "First they ax my tour and push it back, we don't even have a new kick off date mind you, and now they suggest," she pauses and shakes her head, "No...now they tell me that I'm going to do a collaboration with Carrie Underwood. She's country and I'm pop and-"
"She's more country-pop, it could work." Jeff offered sincerely. “And you have worked with Reba before.” He pointed out.
Releasing a heavy sigh she pushed away from the table. "It's not like I have a say in the matter anyways, so I guess I better start packing for my trip to Nashville and cancel the plans no one bothered to ask I had." Without another word to Jeff, Kelly quickly crossed the room, swung the door open wide and stalked out.

Ear phones dangling loosely around her neck, Kelly lifted her iPhone to her eyes and thumbed through her playlists until she stumbled across the album titled "Carrie." Slowly she adjusted each ear piece comfortably inside of each ear before hitting play on the first highlighted track. Within seconds the country singers smooth voice filled her ears. She had to admit, she was a bit impressed. Although she hadn't really followed the singer, having been too wrapped up in her own career to have been able to, she also had to admit the girl was very talented.
Carrie smiled and thanked the Barista behind the counter for her drink before turning to leave. She stopped in her tracks when she turned and spotted a woman sitting at a table off in the far corner. The woman had looked strangely familiar, but Carrie couldn't be sure if was really who she thought it was. Deciding to chance it she shrugged her purse further up onto her shoulder and clutched her drink more tightly in her hand before crossing the small cafe. She stopped, glancing over the woman's shoulder, and found a smile spreading across her lips. It was definitely Kelly Clarkson, and she was definitely listening to her music.
"Checking up on the competition?" She spoke loud enough to make sure the other girl heard her. Surely enough Kelly lifted her head in surprise and yanked the ear phones out of her ears.
Quickly she straightened and turned in her chair to look up at the country star while trying to cover her embarrassment, "What competition?" She teased, her lips threatening to pull into a smile at her failed attempt at being serious.
Carrie chuckled softly and nodded towards the empty seat across from the Texan. Kelly's eyes lit up as she swung her hand wildly, "Oh, please yeah, sit."
Carrie stepped forward and slowly lowered herself into the empty chair; setting her purse onto the table. "I thought we weren't meeting at the studio for like another hour." She said, double checking her watch to make sure she hadn't lost track of time.
"Oh, we're not, you're right, which is why I had time to stop here. I just," she paused as her eyes fell briefly to her iPhone, a tiny blush consuming her cheeks.
Carrie smiled. "You were just checking up on the competition." She said, the humor clear in her voice. She laughed watching the brunette's cheeks redden even more.
"I guess you caught me. I just wanted to know what I was getting into...not saying that I thought you sucked or anything...or that I didn't want to do this...or...I'm Kelly." She breathed out, watching the girl across from her fall into a fit of laughter.
"I pretty much guessed that, but since we're doing introductions, I'm Carrie." She extended her hand across the table quickly, knocking her purse to the floor in the process.
Kelly accepted the hand and shook it for a moment before pulling her hand away and leaning over to retrieve Carrie's bag for her. She felt herself smiling widely as she caught a glimpse of something peeping out of the small opening. clutching the bag in her hands she sat back up and pushed it towards Carrie.
"I see you've been doing your homework too." She chuckled softly, watching the blonde's face turn red instantly.
"Well...I um..." Carrie stammered and watched Kelly reach out for the cup in front of her and take a sip of whatever it was she was drinking.
"It's okay," Kelly began between sips, "I would check up on me too if I heard how horrible my album was doing." She finished with a shrug of her shoulders before setting her cup back down onto the table.
Carrie shot a sympathetic look at the girl seated across from her, but her next words were anything but words said out of just sympathy, "I've actually really enjoyed what I've heard of it so far." She offered honestly.
Kelly let out a short laugh, "You're probably just totally saying that but really mean it's complete crap. You can be upfront, I can take it."
Carrie returned her laugh and slid her hand across the table, placing it on top of Kelly's. She noticed the slight flinch from the other girl at her touch but didn't think anything of it. "I really meant that. The album is really good so far. I mean, I'm only about half through it, so you have a couple more tracks to change my opinion, but I highly doubt it."
Kelly smiled. "Thank you. It's kind of encouraging hearing that, for some reason especially hearing it from you."
Kelly had really expected the girl sitting across from her right now to be anything but how she was acting with her. "I hope you don't take this completely the wrong way, but I was totally expecting you to be a major bitch."
Carrie laughed loudly, "I kind of figured that much. I'm not as bad as the media portrays me, I promise."
Kelly nodded, "I guess you learn something new every day, right?"
"Right. There's a lot you don't know about me, and vice versa I'm sure." Carrie said in agreement.
Kelly reached out for her cup again and lifted it to her lips. Eyeing Carrie over the top of her mug she replied with an almost inaudible, "You have no idea." before taking a generous sip of her tea.
Not entirely sure what she meant by that, Carrie swooped her purse up off the table and slung it over her shoulder, "Well, you wanna head down to the studio together? We've got a good half hour or so til we need to be there, but we could walk and continue to talk." She suggested.
Kelly finished off her tea and set the now empty mug onto the table before pushing up out of the chair. "That sounds like a really good plan." She said, gathering her own purse and her cell phone up from the table before stepping beside Carrie and following her out of the coffee shop.
