Nikki’s POV
I took longer in the shower than was normal for me, current things on my mind demanded I have some time to think. Here I was, seventeen years old, and starting to have thoughts about my best friends’ father. Yeah I was losing my mind, that was what had to be going on. Kevin wasn’t bad looking, not at all, but it was the fact that he was older than my dad that got me. Normally, I’d say that age doesn’t matter, but I had to hold the brakes here. At the moment I didn’t know what was up and what was down, the man had scrambled my brain completely.
Sighing a bit, I cut the water off and stepped out of the shower, picking up a towel to dry off with. Besides all the other reasons, why in the hell would Kevin even think of looking at me as more than his daughter’s best friend? That’s right Nikki; he’s not going to think of you as anything but a kid, so drop it. Says the left part of my brain to the right part of it, not happening. I could still feel his touch and kiss on my cheek. Wrapping a towel around myself, I picked up a second, smaller one, and started to towel my hair dry. I was in over my head here and sinking fast, something had to give before I ended up wrecking my friendship with Ley.
Dropping the towel in the corner, I finished drying off and then tossed the second towel to join the first one. Picking up my clothes, I took my time to get dressed, opting for my favorite jeans and a thin strap shirt that dipped low in the neck. It was a pale pink and I thought it looked amazing on me, not to mention I had a cute pair of heels that I wore with this outfit. Adjusting my clothes, I checked in the mirror before walking out of the bathroom to see Ley on the bed. “What are we doing today?” She asked as she lay there on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. “Well, since we have the day off, I was considering going shopping.” I said back to her with a light shrug.
Honestly, I needed to shop to keep my mind off of Kevin as much as possible before Ley caught on to what was bothering me. Ley didn’t like shopping, and I knew she wanted to shoot me, “Do we really have to?” Plead with me all you want Ley, but I swear I’m going shopping today or I’ll go completely insane here. “Yes we do, I need to buy some new jeans.” I said back to her as I picked up my brush and started to brush out my hair. “New jeans? Nik, you just bought new ones before we left Boston.” She nearly whined as she cast me a pleading look. Rolling my eyes, I sighed and came up with the only excuse I had at the moment, “I want a pair from every state, Ley.”
Now that was genius, I sounded like some sort of collection freak, it was just weird that she now thought I wanted a collection of jeans. Better than her finding out the real reason though, so I left her to think that. “Fine, I’ll go, but I really want to eat first.” She said as she sat up and looked at me, her eyes begging me to comply. “Ok, we’ll go to the mall and hit the food court, then we’ll go shopping.” I said back to her, hoping that she’d agree to that. “Ok, we’ll eat at the food court, but I want real food this time, Nikki, not that health food crap you tried to feed me last time.” She said as she pointed at me, and I knew she was recalling the last mall we went to.
You see, I was on a health food drive right now, I wanted her to eat healthy too, but she was refusing. Rolling my eyes a little, I nodded to her, indicating that I wouldn’t make her eat the health food this time around. Going to my suitcase, I took out my make-up bag and retreated back into the bathroom to finish getting ready. Looking at myself in the mirror, I tried to decide if it was worth it to try and look nicer when I knew Kevin would be around. Damnit, no Nikki, you can’t flaunt yourself in front of him like that, Ley will find out. For some reason, I desperately wanted him to notice me as a woman, not a little girl and not as his daughter’s best friend.
“Hey Nikkikins, I’m gonna go grab some chips or something, want anything while I’m gone?” Came Ley’s voice from just outside the door and I turned quickly and smiled at her, “No thanks, I’m good for now, thanks though Ley.” She looked at me for a minute before shrugging and turning, walking out of the hotel room. I breathed a sigh of relief for the moment and looked back into the mirror, I could not lose it around Ley like that anymore. Nodding, I picked up my hair dryer and started to dry my hair so I could style it before putting my make-up on.
A few minutes later, I had it dry and I put a few curls in it before sliding my fingers through and then using some hairspray to hold the curls. Finished with that, I took out my favorite colors of make-up to match with my shirt. Silvery pink eye shadow with some eyeliner that was just a little dark, to accent my eyes. A soft, baby pink lip liner, complete with lipstick and a gloss coat that made my lips look fuller than they were, which I loved. Adding a little bit of foundation and touching up some places, I put my things away and then checked myself in the mirror again. Yep, I looked good, nothing to worry about in that department, time to get my shoes and get to the mall.
Walking back into the main part of the room, I put my make-up case up and then pulled my shoes out. Sitting down on the bed, I slid them on and made sure they looked good one more time before deciding they were fine. I stayed on my bed; waiting for Ley to get back from the vending machines so we could go, already have my purse sitting next to me and the car keys there as well. It didn’t take her too long to get back, I smiled and she grabbed her purse before heading for the door. Standing up, I got my purse and car keys and went out after her, closing the door behind us.
I didn’t say much as we went down the hallway and then the stairs to the base floor, going outside toward the parking lot. Going over to my rental car, a very nice, and very new Ferrari, red, I opened the door and climbed inside, closing it behind me. Ley got in the passenger side and closed her door before looking over at me, “Did I mention I loved this car?” Looking over at her, I grinned and put the key in, cranking up the car, “This car is beautiful, I want one of my own.” She laughed and I flipped the stereo on before shifting gears and pulling out from the parking lot. I loved pretty cars, especially manual ones, it made me feel more powerful for some reason, don’t know why.
We went down the road with the stereo blasting out Egypt Central and all the rest of our favorite bands. People were stopping to stare at us, but people staring at me never bothered me, I was actually used to it by now. Stopping at a red light, a new Mustang pulled up beside the car and I glanced over from behind my sunglasses to see two guys in the car. They were grinning at us, but I didn’t feel the least bit inclined to flirt at all. Whoa hold up, there are guys in a hot car, who are interested in us and I don’t feel like flirting with them? Yeah I’ve lost my mind completely, I was thinking far too much about Kevin for my own good.
As the light turned green, I took off from the stop and turned in at the mall, finding an empty space and parking the car. Shutting the engine off, I opened my door and stepped out into the hot sun of Florida in the summer time. Getting my purse, I closed the door behind me and waited for Ley to get out and close her door. Arming the alarm system on the car, we turned and headed for the entrance, I was already feeling a little better now that I was near shopping heaven. Coming through the doors, I slid my sunglasses off and put them into my purse. “Alright, food court first for lunch, and then we can go shopping for a while.” I said with a grin put on my face, hoping to keep Ley’s suspicions at bay for the time being.
She grinned over at me and nodded, “And no health food crap, Nikkikins, not for me anyway.” We laughed and walked through the mall toward the food court, I was already checking out potential stores as targets. Ley was rolling her eyes each time I looked at a store twice; she knew my shopping habits when it came to malls. Walking into the main part of the food court, I glanced around until I found the health food place I wanted. She looked at me and shook her head, “I’m getting real food, you go and get the tofu nasty stuff or whatever it is you like so much.” Grinning, I made a beeline for the place to get something I thought would settle me for lunch.
Looking over the menu, I finally decided on something I didn’t usually have while on my diet craze, as Ley called it. I ordered a small sushi box with a small salad and mineral water to drink, deciding I could cheat a little this time. While I waited, I debated on getting a smoothie before we left the mall, I had cravings for them sometimes, only if they were all natural though. Turning, I smiled at the girl behind the counter and handed over my credit card. She ran it through and then handed it back to me, I returned it to my purse and then picked up my tray. Walking over to an emptier area of the food court, I sat down at a four-person table, as all the two person ones were taken already.
Putting my tray down, I sat in one of the chairs, putting my purse close beside me on the table so it didn’t get stolen. Ley joined me a minute later with her tray, putting it down and then sitting down across from me. I glanced at what she had and wrinkled my nose, “New York Fries, I don’t see how you can eat those things Ley.” She looked at me and grinned, taking a bite of them, chewing and swallowing before speaking, “These are great, Nik, you should try some one day, really.” Yeah, like I would eat that even if I wasn’t on my current diet, don’t think so my friend.
“No thanks, Ley, you can keep those all for yourself, I’m good with my salad and sushi.” I said as I arranged my tray and then picked up my fork. “Sushi and a salad? Are you trying to become mal nourished or something?” She asked with a skeptical look on her face, eyeing the sushi like it was going to bite her or something. “It is packed with nutrients, Ley, this stuff is good for you, and it tastes great too.” I said in defense of my food choice, I liked the stuff, honestly. She just laughed and continued on with eating her lunch while I ate mine. For us being in a mall, it wasn’t all that chaotic at the moment, it was kind of quiet, pretty peaceful place to have lunch.
I had finished my first piece of sushi when I noticed that someone had walked up to the table, and it got my attention. Looking up, I saw my dad standing there with a grin on his face and I think I almost choked. My dad in a mall, since when did he go to a mall or any kind unless I dragged him? “Hey there Princess, Leyna. You two having fun?” He asked as he slid his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “Yeah, we wanted to get lunch before shopping. What’re you doing here, Daddy?” I asked as I took a drink of my mineral water. It was then that I noticed Kevin had just walked up to the other side of the table, my heart almost leapt into my throat.
The last thing I needed was for him to show up here when I had come to get my mind off of him in the first place. Ley smiled at her dad and they started up a chat, but I was too involved in my thoughts to really care about what anyone was saying. “Kevin and I are going to get something to eat, care if we join you girls?” Dad asked, making me turn my attention back to him, I smiled and shook my head, I did care, but I wasn’t going to be rude to him or Kevin. The smiled and walked off to go find something to eat, but now I was on edge more than I had been before. I hid it well this time though, not wanting Ley to figure out what was going on with me.
They came back a few minutes later and sat down across from each other, they were so big that it was a little overwhelming for me. The worst part was that my leg was pressed up against Kevin’s leg and I was trying not to completely lose my mind. It was hard to miss the muscle the man had, and I was falling deeper into a place of no return. My mind was running in high gear, thinking of all the wonderful things a man like Kevin could do. Yeah I know it was a bad move on my part, but I seriously couldn’t help it at the moment. If I lived through lunch, it would be a complete miracle, as it was, I was about to pass out in my chair from touching him.
“So Princess, what are you here shopping for anyway?” Dad asked as he looked over at me from between bites of his hamburger and fries. “I need some new jeans, thought I’d come and see if I could find some here.” I said as I finished my sushi and then started on the salad I’d ordered, though it wasn’t tasting as good as I wanted. My nervousness made sure of that small fact for me, it was just lovely to be worrying about slipping up in front of all of them. “Clothes shopping, I should have known. I need some new dvd’s, I’ll take Ley with me to look for some if that’s ok?” Dad said as he took another bite of his hamburger and I smiled back at him in response.
“I’ll go with Jasmine then, can’t leave her to wander around alone.” Kevin said from my side and I think I almost choked. Luckily, I held myself together a managed a smile, I thought lunch was bad, but having to shop with Kevin at my side was more than I could handle. Somehow I would make it through the day, I had to do that. Finishing all of my salad I could handle, I slid it away from me and took a drink of my water, silently praying I didn’t go insane before I got done with my shopping.
