And introducing....Yu!! =D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Was it just his imagination or was he getting the cold shoulder from the new girl? The term ‘cold shoulder’ wasn’t even the right for this. ‘Completely oblivious’ was a better way to put it but word ‘ignoring’ was the best description. Scarlett, she had said name was, looked perfectly at home sitting with them at the restaurant, clothes and all. She seemed to be getting along with everyone. The picture looked right except for one thing. Strify and Kiro were talking her ears off but she didn’t seem to mind. Luminor pitched in on the conversation every time something spiked his interest. Shin was trying; his English wasn’t as good as the others. Sometimes, when he couldn’t come up with the right words, he’d have to say it in German and one of the others translated for him. Scarlett just smiled at him and answered in return as if he had asked himself. Tilo talked for a bit, mostly about the arrangements that would have to be made for her, upcoming dates, a video shoot, a few photo shoots, and her payment. She had smiled and shook her head saying she didn’t worry about it, she was just happy to have gotten the job. Yu was the only one being shunned out of the conversation. Sure, he wasn’t trying very hard to be in it in the first place, but that didn’t matter. She could at least say something to him.
Every time she did look at him, a strange look crossed her face and she turned quickly to one of the others, continuing on as if he weren’t there. Yu kept examining her face trying to figure out what that look was and what it meant. His eyes were drawn to her lip over and over again. Such a strange scar and an even stranger place to have one. Nobody else seemed to be looking at the scar on her lip or ask how she got it. He knew they were all curious, just like he was. Smirking, he wondered which one would ask first; if not now, then maybe later in private.
Just then she looked over at him, and saw his expression. First her reaction was curious, than blanched when she realized what he was staring at. Biting right over the scar, her lip stretched so he could see the bottom of the scar in the middle of her labret. She looked down at her lap quickly and started rubbing her right arm. Yu’s brow furrowed as he tried to decipher the movement. Strify was oblivious, and just continued talking and the keyboardist was picking at his food. Shin had left to go to the bathroom. He turned to Kiro and saw the bassist casting a concerned look at the young woman. So he wasn’t the only one to see the little encounter.
After maybe half a minute, the rubbing slowed but she continued to look down. Shin returned but Yu just stared at the top of her head curious about her reaction. Just then, Strify turned back to Scarlett and stopped mid-sentence.
“Scarlett, are you ok?” Her head came up and she stared at everyone one. Her eyes lingered on Yu a second longer than the others.
Dropping her eyes back to her lap, she blushed and murmured, “Sorry. My mind just got carried away for a minute,” her hand dropped back to her right forearm. With a quick nod and a squeeze to her forearm, she looked back up and smiled at everyone. Biting her lip she said, “Don’t worry about me. Just getting caught up in the past. I’ll try not to let it happen again.” The guys exchanged curious, questioning, and surprised looks. When nobody resumed talking, Scarlett furrowed her brows and bit her lip again. Her head snapped around to Luminor and she gave him a questioning look and said, “You said your name was Luminor right?”
The keyboardist blinked and stared wide-eyed at her. “Yes I did. Why do you ask?”
She continued biting her lip and murmured, “Luminor……luminor. Why does that sound familiar?” Yu’s eyes kept darting back and forth between Luminor and Scarlett, curiosity in his eyes. Luminor just shrugged and crossed his arms, turning his attention back to the young woman.
She kept abusing her lip and murmuring, “Luminor…..Lumina? Light?” She turned back to the dark-haired man with an intrigued look in her eyes. “Moonlight?”
Shock visibly overtook Luminor’s body and his eyebrow shot up. “Y-yes. How did you know?”
She smiled sheepishly and shrugged, “Four years of Latin. The college I attended offered it, as did my high school, so I took it. I liked it better than having to sit through a boring Spanish class,” she chuckled.
Luminor nodded and replied, “Impressive. Normally people have to ask me what it means. I haven’t had anyone guess it right.” Smiling he said, “Latin is a very interesting language. Too bad it’s a dead language.”
The red-head nodded, smiling, “It’s even more beautiful than French or Italian if you can speak it correctly. My professor wanted me to change that to my major and become his apprentice. I did make it my minor, so I have a degree in that for like if I wanted to do private sessions with people, though I doubt that will ever happen.”
Yu’s eyebrow shot up. So that was one thing uncovered about this mysterious girl; she could speak, write and understand Latin. ‘Weird’ the guitarist thought, ‘Why not just pick a normal language like everyone else?’
After that everything turned to Scarlett. They found out she was seventeen and her birthday was in September, her favorite color is purple, favorite number is thirteen, she had a very wide range of music she listened to, her favorite food was strawberries, and she loved being different from everyone else. After she said that a brief look of sadness crossed her face and she bit her lip and grasped her right arm. It only lasted for a moment, so you had to have been looking right at her when it happened to even know it did. Her favorite movies were Nightmare before Christmas and The Little Mermaid (‘Her, Strify and Luminor would get along because of that’ he thought), she loved Tim Burton and Johnny Depp (‘Even more so with some of the others’), but didn’t have a favorite actress. In middle school, she got an award for ‘Most Unique’ which surprised her because she thought she was normal. She said everything she does, wears, listens to, even the way she walks, eats, and talk are all different. She hated summer camp as a kid and called it torture.
When Kiro asked about her family, her face dropped a little. She was very fond and protective of her mother, and didn’t have any siblings. When asked why not, she said that her parents weren’t married or ever have been. She admitted that her mother had been raped by a stranger at the end of her college days and she didn’t know the man. Strify’s face lit up with alarm as she told them the story. ‘So she’s a rape baby,’ thought Yu.
He interjected saying, “That must have been hard to live with growing up.”
She turned to him, surprised, and stated, “Not really. You would think so but it’s not so bad. It’s better to not know your dad at all, than know their name and what they look like, and if they have other family or what not. I’m kinda glad I don’t know him, especially since he’s a rapist. Mom told me that he wasn’t on the streets anymore, so I didn’t have to worry.”
“Well that’s good. At least you don’t have to worry about him hurting someone else,” Luminor responded.
“And, like Yu said, you didn’t have to deal with it growing up,” Kiro threw in.
Scarlett shrugged and replied, “Like I said, it wasn’t that hard. Just one less holiday to celebrate. I’ve actually been through stuff much, much worse than that.” As if unconsciously it seemed she reached for her right forearm again, and proceeded to rub it.
His curiosity was peaked, “Where did you get that scar? The one on your lip.”
She looked at him, her eyes seemed far away and sad as she replied, “An accident that happened at school about three years ago.” She gripped her right arm as she looked away from him back to her plate.
Sensing the tension radiating from her body, Strify quickly picked the conversation back up, “So what is your mom like? Is she anything like you?”
Scarlett shook her head, “Not really. She let me do what I wanted because she knew she could trust my judgments. She even let me go to concerts by myself. We came to an agreement one night after another fast food dinner. I told her that if she just worked and did laundry, I’d cook and do the rest of the chores. My mom can’t cook to save her life. We went out to eat a lot. I thought about a career as a chef once. Mom said I had the talent but not the confidence to…deal with people.” Strify laughed and the tension eased.
After about another fifteen minutes of questions she excused herself to go to the bathroom. Strify turned to him once Scarlett was out of earshot range. “What were you thinking? Why did you ask her about that? If she wanted to tell us she would have.” Yu turned to see four pairs of angry eyes, Tilo just looked concerned.
Yu rolled his eyes and said, “Well it was going to be asked sooner or later so I just said it.” Strify’s jaw dropped in disbelief. Yu just stared at him, “What? Come on I know you were all curious.”
Kiro just rolled his eyes, “Of course we are but we’re not going to do anything to make her uncomfortable.” Yu just scoffed and went back to picking at his burger. What did it matter? It would have been brought up anyway. He still didn’t see why they needed a make-up artist. They mostly did their own make-up. Maybe once Tilo saw that, he’d get rid of her. What was it about her? She seemed to be getting along with the other guys fine. Why did she hate him already? She didn’t even know him, so she didn’t have any right to act the way she was. Pursing his lips, he shoved his plate away and leaned back in the booth. Frowning at the ceiling, he began to think about the looks she’d been giving him or lack thereof. There wasn’t any reason for her to act that way. The question about her scar was the first thing he had said to her, so he knew he hadn’t said anything rude. Maybe his constant staring was making her uncomfortable. ‘Guess I have to apologize later’, he thought.
A dark figure caught his attention. He turned to look at the still figure and if he hadn’t been sitting he would surely have stumbled or fallen over something. Scarlett stood just behind a wall, staring at Yu, chewing on her lip with a look of worry. A perfect picture of sweet and innocent. The wall hid her from the others view so they didn’t see her troubled face. Hoping he hadn’t done anything to upset her again, he gave her a small encouraging smile. She hesitated for a moment but returned a meek smile and stepped into the others view.
Maybe he had over reacted. As she slid back into the booth, Strify continued his questions as if she hadn’t left. Every now and then Yu would throw in a question, causing the guys to throw him surprised glances. When the topic of housing came up, she smiled sheepishly and admitted that she hadn’t thought about it yet.
Yu interjected saying, “Well….we do have a guest room at the flat. If you don’t have anywhere else to go you could stay with us.” Shock crossed hers, Strify and Kiro’s face in unison. “If that’s alright with the guys of course,” he quickly threw in.
Kiro shook his head, “I don’t mind.” Strify nodded and added, “Me either. You said you cooked right? That would be nice for a change. We usually order out. None of us can really cook.”
Scarlett nodded slowly, “That would be nice, but I don’t want to be a burden to you all.” After a few more minutes of debate, she agreed to try it for a few days before deciding. Tilo’s phone went off and he excused himself for a few minutes. The others kept talking about her living arrangements and making plans to go back to her home to get more of her belongings. Yu just sat and watched them, taking in her bright and happy face, and he smiled. She seemed like she could brighten anyone’s gloomy day with one smile.
Tilo walked back in sliding his phone back into his jacket pocket. “Sorry guys we got to get going. I’ve got a meeting in half an hour. Why don’t you guys take Scarlett to your flat and let her have a look around? Take her on a tour of the city or something. Sound good?”
She smiled and nodded, “Sure. Sounds like a plan. But I need to call my mom soon. I told her I would after I landed but things were hectic then. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s bombarded my phone with a million messages by now.” The others laughed and started gathering their things, while Tilo called for the check and to-go boxes. Scarlett got a cup of water to go. When everything was done and put away, they proceeded to the front door and waited for Tilo.
After leaving a tip and paying for the food, Tilo walked towards them and said, “Okay, ready?” Being closet to the door Yu opened and held it as the others exited.
Scarlett looked up at him and whispered, “Thank you.” He returned her gaze and answered, “No problem.” She blushed and scurried outside. Yu smiled to himself. This was definitely going to be an interesting next few days.
