Synyster felt consciousness returning to him painfully and slowly. He recognized the deep throbbing in his bones as a sign he had gone through a very serious healing. His mouth was dry and his tongue stuck to the roof like it was glued there, he tried to open to ask for water but every fiber of his body hurt. He was certain his hair hurt. Gently someone pulled his sore jaw open and cool water filled his mouth unsticking his tongue and cooling his burning achy body. He sighed thankfully and slowly swallowed, his throat felt swollen and sore. As soon as the water was down more filled his mouth and after the second mouthful he felt ready to try and open his eyes. Bright light seared his retinas and he grimaced which pulled the sore muscles of his face. “Okay Syn you can open your eyes now.” A soft lisping voice coaxed. Cautiously his eyes flickered open and he found a blurry splotch of darkness shielding the light. He blinked a couple more times and the splotch became a distinct shape, a wing shape. The small notch in the curve identified the demon as Christ. “Shadows?” he rasped painfully. Jimmy’s bright blue eyes leaned into his vision and they were troubled. “No. We think you guys were ambushed by demons and we’re pretty sure Shadows is back in Dimmur.” He said softly. Forcing his achy body into a sitting position, “We need to get to him.” He said roughly, his wing was stiff and trying to extend it sent shooting pains through his back. Jimmy sat back and watched him worriedly, “Maybe you should rest a little longer, I know we have to get to him but it’ll be suicide if you run in there like this.”
“I need to stretch and eat and then I will be ready for battle.” He insisted. Vengeance and Christ fluttered around him with scolding squeaks and disapproving growls. He smiled and pushed his long hair out of his face, “Find me something to eat and my strength will return.” He ordered the flickering shadows. At once they disappeared and Jimmy looked around the clearing surprised, “How come they listen to you?” he sulked. Painfully, Synyster got to his feet, “Demons are hard wired to serve. You just have to be strong enough to kick start their instincts.” He panted finally on his feet. Jimmy watched him with a raised eyebrow. “Strong enough? I think I could beat you up right now.” He said. Synyster managed a short laugh, “Are you willing to test that?” he asked. Jimmy thought it over and shook his head after a moment, “I would love to play poker with you guys.”
“Do you have any idea where Shadows is?” he asked seriously. Jimmy shook his head, “We talked about it and Vengeance and Christ think Lucifer has him in a cage somewhere while he gets ready for invasion.” Synyster growled and carefully began stretching his wings while he waited for the demons to return.
Vengeance and Christ returned soon and he was feeling much more confident in his strength. He could get himself airborne and the initial soreness was rapidly fading from the rest of his body. They dropped some fruits and roots at his feet and circled around him fussing over his wings and putting them in order. Their mothering was almost annoying, but he did feel a little better after all the twisted and tangled feathers were righted so he let them continue while he ate. “Have you fed Jimmy at all?” he asked one of the darting shadows. Christ gave him a sharp indignant bark and Synyster swatted at him when he got close. “I’m just making sure. You two are awfully flighty sometimes.” There was a chorus of argumentative barks and growls and he chuckled as they continued to yell at him. Jimmy stared at the three resignedly, “You guys make more sounds than you do words.” He said with a yawn. Synyster smiled at him, “The language of demons relies heavily on sounds. It’s actually quite complicated, they only use words because it would take the Fallen ten minutes to decipher anything more complicated than a yes or no.” He reached over and gently ran a hand down the arch in Christ’s wing. The small demon purred happily and crouched down so it would be easier for him to continue. “And here I thought you guys were the rednecks of the supernatural world.” Jimmy said. Vengeance solidified and lunged at him and he held up his hands to block the impact which made it easier for the demon to scoop him up and fly him a few feet off the ground for a minute or two.
Synyster stood after polishing off the food the demons brought him and easily snagged Jimmy out of the air. Immediately he wrapped his arms around his neck and glared up at the cackling demon, Synyster nuzzled his temple and carefully put him on the ground. “Vengeance, Christ we need to figure out how we’re going to sneak into Dimmur.” At once the two fluttered in close and fidgeted next to him in agitation. “Can we just go to Shadows’ room?” Jimmy asked. Synyster shook his head, “No, we need a more general location. They’re probably still tracking incoming and outgoing portals since they don’t know where Vengeance and Christ are.”
“What? They can track portals?” Jimmy looked at the three confused and Synyster nodded. “Yes, it’s Lucifer’s way of keeping tabs on people. He can’t track individuals but he can track where portals open and how often. If a Fallen or demon gets into a pattern of going certain places he’ll know immediately if something changes which will lead him to investigate. He’s ended several uprisings before they could even begin that way.” Vengeance and Christ nodded solemnly. Jimmy scuffed the ground, “So, can you get in without a portal?”
“Yes, but it will take days. We can use a portal, we just have to open one in a high traffic area and enter into a general location. Going to Shadows’ quarters would immediately give us away. Getting in will be the most dangerous part, finding Shadows will probably be easy, I’m sure all of Dimmur knows something is wrong.” Synyster glanced and Vengeance and Christ, “The demons will know exactly where he is. No one can sneeze in Dimmur without a demon finding out and telling all the others.” The two growled but it was an empty threat, Fallen and Eldur angels alike knew what gossip hounds demons were. That’s why they were so valuable to the Avengers when they were captured.
“Okay, so we get in and find Shadows, then what?” Jimmy asked. Synyster shook his head, “You’re staying here.” He said firmly. Jimmy gaped at him, “What! Why?” his sapphire eyes flashed angrily and Synyster gently took his head in his hands, “Because it’s too dangerous.” He murmured “If we get separated Vengeance and Christ can easily come back to this plane, if you were lost…” he kissed his forehead and Jimmy mumbled something he couldn’t understand. “I know you want to help, love, but I can’t risk you like that. We’ll take you back home and as soon as we have Shadows we’ll get you.” Jimmy caved and wrapped his arms around his neck. Synyster folded his wings forward and hugged the lanky human back. He opened a portal and in a second they were back in Jimmy’s cramped apartment. “Home sweet home.” Jimmy muttered but he sounded glad to be back in familiar territory. “I actually get to sleep in a bed tonight, I guess this isn’t so bad.” He conceded sitting down on the thin mattress. Synyster leaned down and kissed his forehead again. “The Fallen may still be watching this place,” he warned quietly, “if you feel like you’re being watched or followed, leave. Don’t worry about where to go, just run, we’ll find you.” Jimmy nodded hesitantly against his chest and he relaxed some. “Try not to leave unless necessary, the longer they think you’re halfway across the world the better.” Jimmy nodded again and he finally straightened, “We’ll be back as soon as we can.” Christ and Vengeance chirped in agreement and before he could think of something else to fret over about the human he left.
They didn’t have to go far from Jimmy’s apartment to find a suitable place to enter Dimmur. Orange County was a hotspot for Dimmur agents, with it being close to both Hollywood and Sin City it was ideal for releasing demons like Vengeance and Christ to wreck havoc. “Where are we going to enter?” Vengeance asked nervously shifting his weight. Synyster smoothed a hand down the back of his head and some of his anxiety lessoned. “The demon crypts would probably be best. There’s a lot of traffic through there and I’m sure they’re buzzing about Shadows.” Synyster decided after a moment. Vengeance and Christ noticeably relaxed after hearing his decision. The crypts were their territory and the Fallen didn’t often venture into the dark mazes leaving the demons free to do as they pleased without the threat of being harassed. Synyster took a calming breath and opened the portal silently telling himself the sooner they found Shadows the sooner they could leave.
Synyster, like other Fallen, didn’t enter the crypts where the demons played. They were dark, not being lit with anything stronger than candlelight, and for his large wings and height they were uncomfortably cramped, almost to the point of claustrophobia. As soon as he stepped into the dark hallway he had to clamp down on his instinct to back out and run. Vengeance and Christ appeared in front of him and boldly scampered forward squeaking and yelping. In seconds the quiet hallway erupted in noise from answering demons and the flutter of batwings. Synyster stayed close enough to see which turns they took but moved much slower in the tight hallways.
Around a particularly tight corner there was a high yelp of pain and then the sounds of a fight. Synyster tightened his wings against his back painfully close and darted around the corner and nearly ran over Vengeance and Christ who were rapidly retreating from a mass of glittering eyed demons. Synyster snarled but in the narrow hallways he couldn’t flare his wings to show just how ticked off he was. The demons paused but in their numbers their fear was minimal and they continued forward. He backed up quickly and pressed his sensitive wings against the sharp rock surface so Vengeance and Christ could scamper past him and lead the way out.
As they ran down the twisting hallways the hunting cries of the demons increased as more were added to their numbers. “What happened?” he snapped tucking his wings closer to his back when the tip of one smacked against a jutting rock. “Lucifer has promised them human flesh and angel blood for any demon that catches us.” Vengeance yelled back. Synyster bared his fangs, “Did you find out about Shadows?” he asked ducking a low section of ceiling. The arch of his wing caught the rock and he gritted his teeth against the sharp pain. “There were four different locations given, the two most likely are Lucifer’s chambers or the Pit.” Christ panted. The tunnel began to widen and Synyster began to breathe easier, “Christ, Vengeance I want you two to go back to Jimmy.” He ordered. The two demons glared at him over their shoulders, Christ’s dark brown eyes glowing an eerie red in the brighter hallway. “No.” They said at once. Synyster snarled at them, “Which human do you think Lucifer was talking about when he promised them their meal?” behind them the sounds of pursuit inched closer as the demons flitted and glided closer to their quarry. Vengeance made a low sound and Christ dodged around Synyster and sent up a quick wall of flame before jumping into the air and catching up to his lover. The stench of burning demons quickly filled the hallway along with their screams of pain and fury. “Go. Now.” Synyster said opening his own portal. It wouldn’t be long before the racket the demons were making had the Fallen curious and he had two places to check for Shadows. Vengeance and Christ glared at him but disappeared into the human world.

Jimmy’s POV
He lay back on his bed and stared at the ceiling wondering what else life could throw at him. Already he had lost both parents; who happened to be the mother and father of the human race, he’d been chased by angels, and now he was being chased by demons. “I think I’ve done more living in the last four years than most people do in four lifetimes.” He muttered running a hand down his face. He sat up and looked around the small apartment and decided the best thing to keep him from worrying about the demons and Synyster would be a good ol’ fashioned box dinner. He skimmed through his meager cabinets and found a box of mac n’ cheese and in the fridge was a package of hot dogs just beginning to think about going bad. “Hot dogs n’ cheese it is.”
While he stared at the two pans of heating water the back of his neck crawled and he turned to look at the open window. Someone was watching him. “Fuck me.” He whispered. He turned the stove off and grabbed his discarded back pack and ran out the door. He wasn’t going to get far without the angels or demons. He barely had any money in his bank account after paying rent last week. Definitely not enough for a plane ticket and probably not even enough for a bus ticket. So he would be hitchhiking it. Night was coming though and people were much less likely to pick anyone up when it was dark. He began running in the direction of the Scottish Rite Cathedral hoping whatever was following him was demonic enough it couldn’t enter.
The stars were out by the time he hit the massive oak doors to the Cathedral, he hurried in and shut the door behind him and immediately the feeling of being trailed disappeared. “Thank God.” He muttered. He looked over the pews for anyone else looking to spend the night and found himself alone. Quietly he made his way over to his favorite alcove with Mary and sat down in the third row of pews. Before he could get comfortable though the feeling of being watched returned and his head snapped up. He grabbed his bag and headed for the small side door in the alcove. Before he got there a figure stepped out of the shadows and he came to a sliding stop landing hard on his butt. He was heavily armored and carried a long and short sword in scabbards at his sides; his white wings told him he an Avenger. “Oh…shit.” He whispered. He scrambled to his feet and tried to back track but there were two more behind him.
“Calm yourself human.” A female voice assured. He jumped back and pressed his back against the cool stone wall of the cathedral. The healer stepped forward and the low lights glinted off the gold filigree leaves in her hair. “You are James Owen Sullivan, correct?” she asked. Jimmy had the most uncomfortable feeling of déjà vu and nodded stiffly. The woman slowly walked forward, “Calm down, they’re not going to hurt you. These are Guardians.” She said motioning toward the two hulking angels. “They are here to protect, not harm.” She added for further assurance. Jimmy’s eyes darted around between the armed and armored angels, “That’s an awfully extreme change of heart.” He said licking his lips nervously. The healer shrugged lightly, “What the Avengers don’t know won’t hurt them.” The two Guardians gave slight nods and sheathed their swords. Jimmy relaxed a tiny bit when the sharp blades weren’t pointed at him anymore but he still didn’t trust the Eldur angels. “What makes you think I need protection?” he asked shakily. The healer’s face became troubled and the Guardians shifted uncomfortably. “We’ve had reports,” she said softly, “our spies are being captured by Dimmur forces in droves. With what you told me of Lucifer’s plans it sounds like he might be baiting this Berserker.”
“If that’s the case the Fallen will be looking for you, the two demons, and the angel.” One of the armored angels said softly. Jimmy nodded, “So I’ve heard.” He muttered, “So it was just you guys following me?” the three angels nodded in unison and Jimmy let out a breath. “Okay, then I’m going back to my apartment and making some food.” He said wrapping an arm around his growling stomach. “We can take you.” An angel said stepping forward. Jimmy eyed him warily but after a moment he reached out to take the angel’s outstretched hand.
Back in his dark apartment Jimmy looked the tiny space over and decided nothing had been tampered with. He turned the stove back on and picked up the package of hot dogs and turned them over in his hands wondering if he should still make them since they’d been out of the fridge so long. He shrugged and opened the package anyway. “Are you certain those are safe to consume?” one of the angel’s asked. Jimmy shrugged, “I figure they’ll be okay if I cook them.” He said dismissively. Before any angel could act on the disapproving feeling permeating the room there was a flutter and a chorus of surprised squawks and yelps. Jimmy whirled around and found two very angry Guardians with their swords drawn swiping at Vengeance and Christ’s vulnerable wings. “Stop! Vengeance, Christ get over here!” he yelled frantically. The two demons swooped down and landed on either side of him snarling venomously. “Vengeance, Christ, hush. You two chill the fuck out, they’re with me.” He snapped at the slowly approaching angels. The angels stopped but didn’t drop their weapons. Once Jimmy was certain they weren’t going to hurt his demons he turned his attention to them. “What happened, where are Synyster and Shadows?” he asked anxiously. Both demons had gashes on their faces and arms but they nuzzled his chest, “He’s still searching for Shadows; but was concerned with your safety.” Vengeance said glaring at the demons, “I see his concerns were well grounded.” He bared his teeth at the angry angels and Jimmy lightly bumped his shoulder, “Relax, they’re here to help too.” He murmured. Vengeance growled but returned his head to his chest. “C’mon, you two go clean each other up.” He said nudging them toward the tiny bathroom barely half a dozen steps from the stove. The two demons hesitated but relented and slunk to the bathroom. Jimmy let out a breath and leveled each of the Guardians with a glare. “Vengeance and Christ are with me, if you guys don’t like it you need to leave.” The angels stepped back and sheathed their swords, “Consorting with demons is not wise.” The larger of the two growled. Jimmy glared at him, “They’re the ones that kept me alive when your Avengers tried to kill me.” He said coldly. The angel backed off and they stood in an uncomfortable silence until the sound of boiling water had Jimmy busying himself with making his dinner.
Vengeance and Christ emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later with damp hair and looking much more relaxed. Christ sniffed the air and looked at Jimmy questioningly. He pulled down two more plates for the demons. “All right, tell me what happened.” He said after he gave them each a plate. The two devoured the food hungrily and between bites told him about Lucifer’s promise and where they had last seen Synyster headed.
“What’s the pit?” Jimmy asked, out the corner of his eye he saw the Guardians shift uncomfortably whenever it was mentioned. Christ shuddered, “The Pit is the deepest place in Dimmur, it’s where Lucifer keeps those that…displease him.” Vengeance wrapped a wing around his shoulders and made a low purring sound. “That will be where he’s keeping our captured spies.” The healer whispered. Vengeance and Christ eyed her, “What spies? We heard nothing of spies.” He growled. Jimmy reached over and smoothed his hand down the back of his head and the demon dropped his head down to fuss over Christ some more. “The Guardians are here because Eldur spies are being rounded up by Dimmur forces.” Jimmy said quietly. Christ whimpered and snuggled further into Vengeance’s wing. “Krak told me demons have been disappearing in the night.” He whispered. Vengeance looked down on him surprised, “You didn’t tell me that.” He scolded. “I thought he was just paranoid, you know how he is.” He defended. Vengeance made the low purring sound again and Christ relaxed again into his wing. “What’s that mean you two?” Jimmy asked uneasily. The demons looked up at him with troubled eyes, “Usually when demons disappear it’s because they’re in some kind of uprising plot but now that Lucifer has Shadows…it could mean he’s just feeding the blood lust with demons he knows won’t be too missed.” Vengeance said. “Okay. So what can we do?” Jimmy asked looking from the demons to the angels. Christ and Vengeance shrugged, “There’s not much we can do. If we return to Dimmur we’ll only complicate things. Really, we can only stay here and keep you safe. Synyster will either succeed or he won’t. If he doesn’t we’ll have to work from there.” He said practically.

Synyster’s POV
The heat from the Pit hit him at full force and he had to take a second to breathe the boiling air and then he began searching open cave for any sign of Shadows. He had never been to the Pit before and wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from it. He had of course heard about it, but nothing from the horror stories he had been told matched the room. He didn’t see any small cages or patrolling lower demons. The area was clear, the pits and stalagmites rising from the floor like devilish horns broke up the red hued floor. He stayed in the shadows scanning the area with sharp eyes. A hellish roar erupted in the chamber and shook pebbles from the ceiling. Synyster’s breath caught and he swallowed thickly as he stepped out into the hazy light.
Across the hellish cavern a pocket jutted from the craggily wall, through the small portholes he could see a Shadow pacing angrily back and forth. All around the pocket Lucifer’s dark aura crackled and another angry roar filled the chamber. “Shadows.” He whispered breathlessly. His words barely disturbed the thick air but the pacing stopped and from the darkness two ruby eyes glared out at him. “Oh Shadows.” He breathed, his heart ached as he stared into the unseeing and wrathful ruby gaze. A low thrumming growl rumbled the walls and there was the sound of rock being struck and he roared again.
“Beautiful isn’t he?” A silky voice asked behind him. Synyster whirled around heart racing and bared his teeth at Lucifer. Cold grey eyes looked him over, “I thought only cats had nine lives.” He mused, “I guess the demons will get to taste your blood again.” Above them there was an excited flutter of wings and eager snorts and cries from middle and lower demons alike. He held back a shudder at the mention of the demons. His skin still burned from their previous bites. “You’ve destroyed him.” Synyster seethed. Lucifer shook his head, “No, I’ve perfected him.” He said as if he were dealing with a difficult child. “He is what every Fallen should be; ruthless, driven, and nearly unstoppable.” A wintry smile lit his features and even in the stifling heat a chill crawled through Synyster. “Perhaps you need a closer look to truly see his beauty.” With a snap of his fingers two Fallen swooped from the ceiling and made a grab for him. He pulled his sword and slashed one neatly down the chest while the other veered sharply to the side and flapped hard to gain lost altitude. Synyster snarled and lunged at Lucifer when his body froze and he fell to the rough stone floor gagging.
Electricity raced through his body sending every nerve into the red. He couldn’t scream, he couldn’t blink, his body jerked uncontrollably as wave after wave of torture washed through him. Every time he reached for unconsciousness the agony receded only to hit him again when his mind began to recover. His heart stuttered and skipped choking his limited breath and squeezing his too tight chest even more.
Finally the pain became less and less until his sightless eyes began to register the room again and his heart found its rhythm. He was still in the Pit being held by two of the Fallen. “A very handy trick I’ve learned over the centuries.” Lucifer said conversationally. “You know every living creature gives off an electromagnetic force? It’s what keeps our hearts beating and our brains functioning, it sustains life. I’ve figured out how to flip it around. I can make this essential electromagnetic field attack itself, which would be you.” He reached out and pressed his hand against his chest and a red wave of torment hit him. He gasped and slumped when his knees buckled. His lungs were seizing up again and his heart skipped and stopped before haphazardly restarting. Lucifer removed his hand and almost immediately the pain was gone. Synyster struggled to raise his head while shooting pains cascaded through his chest. “Remarkable isn’t it?” Lucifer asked almost delightedly. Synyster had no breath for words and contented himself with a bold snarl. Lucifer’s brow furrowed and he back handed the angel. Synyster felt his lip split and sting when his head snapped to the side. He snapped at the retreating hand and another short burst of agony dropped him to his knees. It took longer for his heart and lungs to work themselves out and he stayed on his knees gasping in pain. Lucifer pulled his head back by his hair and the cold smile reappeared, “I forgot, it doesn’t take much too completely disrupt that electric field. I’ll have to stop if Shadows is to have any fun with you.” He let go of him and Synyster’s head fell back to his chest. He was still breathing heavily and his heart stuttered ever few beats sending shooting pain through his chest and back. “Put him in with Shadows.” Lucifer ordered, “Once he’s finished his lover we’ll attack Eldur.” Synyster was forced to his feet and dragged across the floor to a door on the right side of Shadows’ cage.
Inside the cage Shadows’ agitated snarls and roars shook the chamber. From high in the ceiling demons echoed the sounds mockingly and hurled hot rocks down on Synyster occasionally striking his sensitive wing. The door opened and he was shoved in quickly and the door was slammed behind him. From the darkness two ruby eyes watched him predatorily. Synyster didn’t try to push himself up, his wings sprawled uselessly against the hard floor and sharp walls. His labored gasping breaths filled the gaps between Shadows’ low growls. A breathy scream escaped when his heart skipped a beat and sent piercing agony all the way to the tips of his fingers. “Shadows.” He gasped. Unconsciousness had a hold on him and it wasn’t letting go. The wrathful eyes moved closer and he could see the snake-like slits of his irises. A flash of fire outside illuminated the prison and Shadows attacked the outer walls. In the light Synyster caught a glimpse of the other angel; his face and arms smeared with drying blood. He shuddered and closed his eyes. This wasn’t his Shadows. “Or are you?” he wheezed. The Berserker snapped his teeth and stalked closer. “You are Shadows aren’t you?” he whispered a little stronger, “Lucifer said you were the perfect Fallen.” He took a chance with his weakened heart and pushed himself to his knees. The Berserker’s hand shot out and ripped his shoulder open. He stifled a cry of pain but knew the scent of angel blood would eventually reach the demonic mass outside and whip them into a frenzy. “I don’t want you Shadows.” He breathed holding his garnet glare, “I want Mathew.” The Berserker stilled. “Mathew.” He whispered again. A low growl followed the name but the angel still didn’t move. “It’s me Mathew, Brian.” He pleaded. His heart skipped and he nearly toppled forward but caught himself. “Mathew, please.” He panted. The reptilian irises quivered and the growl stopped. “You’re not a killer Mathew. You were never meant to be.” He whimpered as another round of pain shuddered through him. “You are a Guardian, you’re meant to protect.” The irises expanded and contracted rapidly with every word. “Please, Mathew, wake up.” He slowly reached out and brushed his sticky cheek, for a second his irises slitted again and he jerked like he would bite then his irises rounded out and instead he closed his eyes and pressed his nose against his wrist. Synyster risked cupping his cheek. “Come back to me Mathew.” He whispered. He opened his eyes and his crimson gaze flared red hot and then faded to a familiar gold.
Synyster managed a tired smile and dropped his hand and clutched his chest as his heart skipped, stopped and started. He was losing blood quickly from the gaping claw marks down his chest and his heart was still weak; he fell forward and hit the ground with a jarring thud gasping for air. Dark wings covered him and a strong body pressed against his sensitive wings for a second and then disappeared with a shattering roar. Synyster tried to push himself up but collapsed again. There was a crackle and Shadows snarled again and then he was pelted with rocks and pebbles as part of the wall caved beneath the angry angel’s attack. Demons shrieked and Fallen snarled but over it all he could hear Shadows’ enraged roars. He rolled onto his back and again tried to sit up but his heart stuttered threateningly and he crumpled to the hard floor again.
Pandemonium raged outside the relative protection of Shadows’ former prison. The furious angel tossed demons and angels alike as if they were toys. Lucifer’s red wings rose above the mass of black and he dropped down on Shadows. The black winged angel fell to his knees with a high screech of pain and tried to shake the other angel off. Braver demons jumped in to claw at any vulnerable skin. There was a flash of fire and the choking smell of burning demons filled the hot air. Shadows finally grabbed Lucifer’s brunette hair and jerked him over his shoulder in a wing crunching body slam. Lucifer howled with pain and clawed madly at Shadows’ face, he snarled and snapped at the fingers before stumbling back a few steps. In his hand a flame flickered and grew and he threw it at Lucifer, the other angel rolled to the side but too slow. The flame engulfed a wing and he rolled to the floor screaming and cursing. Synyster shuddered, a broken wing was agony enough, a burned one would be a hundred times worse. Shadows roared challengingly and the remaining demons backed away as he made his way over to Synyster. His chest ached and the burning air of the pit seared his throat and lungs, “Mathew.” He whispered trying to get his golden eyed angel back from the garnet eyed demon that had possessed him again. His heart skipped and he gasped with pain and let his eyes roll back. Heavy wings surrounded him again and then the oppressive heat was gone and there was only a cool sea breeze.
He slowly woke up, still exhausted and his chest throbbing painfully. “I guess that means I’m still alive.” He muttered reaching up and rubbing the area above his sore heart. “I guess so.” A husky voice answered from in front of him. Despite the pain radiating through his body he shot to a sitting position and engulfed Shadows in a hug. “Shadows, oh fuck, I—Shadows.” He whispered burying his head in his damp neck and inhaling the cool sent of water. Heavy wings wrapped around him as well as his arms, “No, not quite.” Shadows whispered holding him tightly, “I think Mathew would be the more appropriate name now.” Synyster lifted his head and gasped quietly when he didn’t see the sable wings he was expecting. Instead the feathers around him were the grey of a rainy dawn and brushed with glittering gold. “How?” he breathed running his fingers over the beautiful feathers. Mathew shrugged, “I woke up like this.” Synyster lay his head down again on his shoulder, “I love you.” He murmured. Mathew pressed their lips together and slowly stroked between Synyster’s shoulder blades. The other angel shuddered with pleasure and pressed closer to him, “Please.” He whispered.

Jimmy’s POV
An uneasy truce was reached between the Guardians and demons. The large angels slept near the door and window while the healer stretched out on the floor in front of the stove and fridge. She had turned down the bed with the simple logic that her wings wouldn’t fit on the narrow mattress, it didn’t keep Jimmy from feeling guilty though. Underneath the bed Vengeance and Christ occasionally growled or sighed as they dreamed. Jimmy didn’t think he would be able to sleep with the three Eldur angels in the room but after his belly was filled sleep was the next thing his tired body demanded.
He woke up when the quiet dream growls under the bed turned into angry awake growls. “What’s wrong?” he slurred still more asleep than not. Vengeance and Christ slithered out from under the bed and the three angels were already on their feet. The Guardians each had their short swords drawn, the blades flashing blue in the minimal light from the street. “Hunting demons.” The smaller angel whispered tersely. Christ flitted over and closed and locked the window, “There are far too many out there.” He said nervously. Vengeance jumped onto the ceiling and crawled down the wall to look out the window as well and made a low growling sound in his throat. “Something’s happened.” They both pulled back from the window when a dark shadow passed by.
“We need to move the human, the window has been open all day his scent will be easy to track.” The healer said. The demons looked out the window again and slowly shook their heads, “No…they’re not hunting for him. They’re just hunting. Something has gone very wrong.” More shadows darted past the window and Jimmy pressed himself further into the darkness by his dresser. All five Dimmur and Eldur beings turned and growled when a shimmering portal opened in the wall. The three angels relaxed when a blond angel wearing a lavender tunic stepped through. “You’ve seen the demons?” She asked without preamble. The three nodded stiffly and she looked out the window with frightened blue eyes not even acknowledging the two demons still clinging to the wall. “It’s absolute chaos, Merkel and Kiba, you’re being called back; they need every Guardian and Avenger right now. Dira, you might as well go back now, we already have injuries coming in.” she said. The Guardians left without comment but Dira pinned the other angel with a glare, “And who is going to protect James?” she snapped. The other angel blinked in surprise, “I am.” She answered simply. Dira’s shoulders slackened and she stepped through the portal without further argument.
“I don’t need a babysitter.” Jimmy grumbled. The blue eyed angel smiled and neatly folded her legs under her as she sat, “No, you’ve become quite independent since I last saw you. I’m so proud of you James.” She said with a smile. Jimmy stared at her and then looked at the two demons. Vengeance and Christ shrugged and returned to watching the street. “What are you talking about?” he asked a little uneasily. The angel’s smile didn’t falter but it was suddenly on an achingly familiar face. Her eyes were a little faded but they hadn’t lost any of their life, the smile was just like he remembered and her skin was sun browned and wrinkled. “Grandma?” he choked. The image rippled again and the young angel nodded fluffing her snowy wings some. “Guardians are masters of deceit.” Vengeance sneered from the window. Jimmy barely heard him. The angel gave him an indignant look and then addressed Jimmy with friendlier features, “Guardians can take on any persona be it human or animal. We’re here to protect and being stuck with only one form would hamper that.” She explained. Jimmy stared at her, “You’re not my grandma.” He said flatly. “She’s dead.” He didn’t appreciate the chameleon display. His grandmother had meant everything to him and her sudden death had been a deep and lasting blow. “Then she was reassigned, she had to destroy the persona she created.” Christ supplied snapping his teeth at the angel. She ignored the demons and got up to sit down in front of him.
“I know it’s upsetting,” she started gently, “but I am the Guardian assigned to you. Your grandmother Lee was the persona I decided on.” Jimmy shook his head but couldn’t get his throat to work. Warm hands held his, “I absolutely meant everything I told you James, I was devastated when they told me to return. I’ve watched you grow every chance given to me and I am so proud of who you’ve become.” She whispered. Jimmy swallowed thickly tried to blink away his tears, she stood up and wrapped him in a surprisingly strong hug. Soft wings brushed his arms and he smelled his grandma’s perfume; just a hint of lavender in the air. He hugged the angel back. “I was so afraid when they sent the Avengers after you.” She murmured, “I’m glad Shadows found you and kept you safe when I couldn’t.”
“You were there in the creek.” He said remembering the voice and what he thought had been hallucinations of his grandma. He felt her nod and she kissed his temple, “I wish I could’ve done more.” Vengeance and Christ finally abandoned the window and crouched on either side of Jimmy, he thought, deliberately close. The angel smiled at them, “As well as Vengeance and Christ.” The demons didn’t give into her charm and growled. “Why would Eldur give him a Guardian and then sic the Avengers on him?” Christ asked skeptically. The angel sat back on the floor and folded her hands in her lap. “Adam and Eve disappeared one day, we assumed they had gone to the earth plane again.” She sounded a bit exasperated and Jimmy had a feeling his parents disappearing was a common thing. “Sometimes they feel too confined in Eldur and hide in the earth plane for a couple years until someone is sent to fetch them again.” She explained, “Eighteen years ago they left again but when our spies finally tracked them down they had a child with them. They told the spies they had adopted him.” She sighed heavily and tucked a stray lock of hair back into her neat bun. “No one of course was happy about this but they had seemed so happy to be raising another child He decided He couldn’t force them to give the child up. I was sent as a Guardian to the child and to keep an eye on them so they didn’t runaway again.” Vengeance’s soft leathery wings brushed against Jimmy’s arm as the little demon got comfortable sitting on the bed.
“After a few years some angels became suspicious of the child, no matter how deeply they looked into human affairs they could find no sign of adoption papers. At first we feared they had stolen the child.” She shuddered, “They were ordered to return to Eldur immediately while things were sorted and I,” she said softly, “was called back and reassigned. I tried to persuade them into letting me raise you. It would have been awful for you to lose your parents but at least there would have been someone there for you. As they wanted it you were going to lose your parents and your Guardian. You were barely seven years old, that much trauma would have scarred you and you’re such a gentle soul James I didn’t want that part of you destroyed.” She reached up and took his hand again and he let the warmth of her fingers calm the nausea percolating in his stomach. His grandma had died right after his dad walked out, when he was about seven or eight. “Adam obeyed the call and returned and my request was refused so I had to return as well but Eve stayed and fled again with you. She ran for years with you until she landed here. We had every unoccupied angel in Eldur searching for her and you. Adam and Eve are deeply, deeply bonded and without Adam with her she was slowly going insane.” He remembered the change in her. She lost her smile and yelled more and more, the alcohol she started drinking more of made it worse, then there were the bottles of pills and anything else she could get her hands on. He shuddered and Vengeance rubbed his cheek against his arm like a cat. The angel’s fingers tightened reassuringly.
“While we were searching for you two some angels were still trying to find where you had been adopted from. Adam stuck to his story but couldn’t detail any sort of adoption process or even give us the name of an agency. They decided to look into other means of getting child, thankfully no missing children came up but they did find the name James Owen Sullivan on a birth certificate. Adam and Eve had used their real names and made up a last one. Once Adam was confronted with the birth certificate he explained everything about the artificial insemination.” Her fingers trembled and her voice was softer when she spoke next, “The Avengers were sent out after the spies found you and Eve, no one was told who you or Eve were. The original plan was to keep the search going and,” she let go of his hand to wipe her eyes, “after the Avengers had destroyed the child and had Eve she would be reunited with Adam and the whereabouts of the child would remain unknown.” She wiped her eyes again, “I couldn’t do anything to help. Adam and Eve broke a covenant and…I just couldn’t do anything. I spent days hoping the order would be repealed. And when Abel came back dragging Brian by his wing I knew something had happened. Abel let the whole of Eldur know how Brian had hesitated and let the target escape with demons.” Her tears dried and she smiled happily at the two demons. Jimmy had a feeling Christ was preening a little but Vengeance just nodded as if they did that sort of thing all the time.
“I felt awful for Brian, he was originally slated to be a Guardian but for some reason they reassigned him with the Avengers. He was never as ruthless as they wanted him to be and was punished all the time. I think he’s happier now as a Fallen.” She said thoughtfully and Jimmy smiled. “Our spies returned and told us that Vengeance and Christ had taken you which meant you were with Shadows. I’ve never been so happy to hear his name. I knew it was just a game for them but the longer you were with them the longer you would stay alive.”
“Yeah, I’m just a never ending source of entertainment for them.” Jimmy said drily. Vengeance and Christ snickered and even the angel laughed softly. “So now you know how Eldur went from protecting you to sending Avengers.” She said. Vengeance and Christ stretched their wings and looked out the window again and their foreheads wrinkled with worry. “If they’re not rounded up soon this will be a very bloody day.” Vengeance said. The angel stood and moved closer to the window, “Should we move James?” She asked nervously as shadows flickered outside the window. Christ hissed hoarsely and she jumped back, “What?” she asked breathlessly. “Hide yourself angel or you’ll have them all over here.” He snapped. She folded her wings tightly against her back and moved away from the window. “He will be safer here. If we start moving they will only become curious.” Vengeance said calmly. “What happens if they’re not called back?” Jimmy asked nervously as more and more shadows glided past the window and the soft sound of wings became louder. Vengeance looked up at him with unnaturally bright eyes, “Quite possibly Armageddon.” He said gravely.
Jimmy gaped at him, “Armageddon? Are you fucking with me again?” he asked suspiciously. Vengeance shook his head, “If the demons are left to their own devices they will slaughter every human they see. Eldur isn’t going to stand for that and they’ll send out every angel they have to stop it. The result will be open warfare and humans are going to be stuck in the middle of it. There is a very good chance this is the last night for human civilization.” He explained. “Something is wrong with Dimmur. Satan, nor any other Fallen, would not have let them out.” He said mostly to himself. “So what’s that mean?” Jimmy demanded. Christ climbed onto Vengeance’s lap and rested his chin comfortably on his shoulder and let his wings droop. “It means the Fallen are not paying attention which points to possible civil war.”

Synyster’s POV
The sun warmed his face and wings but Mathew’s heavy body moving against and inside his burned him from the inside out. He arched again with a wordless cry of pleasure as the bigger angel slowly slid in and out of him. Rough hands slid down his legs exploring the soft skin of his thighs and then up his ticklish sides. He gasped and tried to twist away from the teasing fingers, Mathew whimpered and his hands slid to his hips again holding him in place while he thrust harder. Soft lips pressed against the still healing skin of his shoulder and he sighed gently pulling Mathew’s head around to kiss his lips. He moaned and pulled Mathew’s hands off his hips and led them up his sides to his back. The pleasure doubled as his fingers stroked the sensitive area a high scream snuck out of him and he wrapped his legs around Mathew’s waist. The other angel moaned and moved faster striking his prostate every time. Lips found his again and a warm tongue slipped into his mouth stroking his sensually. Synyster ran his hands up his strong arms and across his broad shoulders before gliding down to his wings. He felt Mathew’s shudder of pleasure in his own body and he moaned into the kiss. Mathew broke the kiss and trailed his lips down his throat, “Come for me.” He pleaded raggedly. His once smooth and torturous thrusts were inconsistent and fast. Synyster arched his entire back off the sand while fingers stroked and pressed against his sensitive wings and shook his head. “Don’t stop.” He ordered breathlessly. Mathew cursed and he moved faster, Synyster wrapped his arms around his neck and pressed their foreheads together. “Mathew, please.” He whispered, he knew he was tormenting him but he also knew the angel would hold out as long as he could. “Hold it, just a little longer. I know it has to be so tight, so warm.” He gasped when Mathew’s hips jerked forward and a spike of pleasure shot through him. “More Mathew.” He pleaded. Mathew whimpered but he thrust hard again. Synyster let his head fall back and screamed again. “Please, Synyster.” Mathew pleaded against his bottom lip before kissing him deeply. Short fingernails ran down his back and he screamed into the kiss while his body bowed up to fit against Mathew’s. The larger angel shuddered and moaned and kept thrusting even after his climax.
Synyster wrapped his arms around his neck and kissed him softly after his body was done quaking. “Thank you.” He murmured. Mathew’s gravelly laugh vibrated his chest and he raised his head from his shoulder, “I hate it when you do that to me.” He answered. Synyster smiled and threaded his fingers through his hair, “I know. But it makes for great sex.” Mathew made an agreeing sound and lay his head down again.
“We need to get our demons.” Mathew said after a few moments. Synyster kept his eyes closed and focused on the now uncomfortable heat from the sun baking whatever skin Mathew wasn’t covering. “Jimmy too.” He murmured. “He was included.” Mathew answered. Synyster laughed and reluctantly sat up when Mathew’s heavy body unpinned him. His shoulder was still sore but it would be healed before the end of the day. He carefully rotated it a couple times to loosen the skin and muscles and stretched his wings. His wounded wing was healthy again and not even sore. He stretched the wing again as far as he could, not even a twinge. “Did you finish healing my wing?” he asked surprised. Mathew finished buttoning his tunic and shrugged carelessly, “and your shoulder.” Synyster reached up and felt the healing skin, “How?” he said awed. Healing gifts were greatly diminished when angels fell, if Mathew had retained enough to heal an open wound and finish healing a fractured bone he would have had unheard of talent as an Eldur angel. Mathew flapped his wings a few times to test them, “It nearly killed me, but it was worth it.” He murmured wrapping his wings around him and kissing him again.

Jimmy’s POV
“Civil war?” Jimmy stared at the two demons. “What does that mean for Shadows and Synyster?” he asked fearfully. The demons looked a little troubled, “I don’t know.” Vengeance admitted. “It could be the rest of the Fallen have seen how foolish his plan is and have acted against him, if that’s the case Synyster will be relatively safe but Shadows will be destroyed.” He paused and looked down at Christ and the smaller demon made a small woofing sound and Vengeance shrugged. “That’s the only thing I can think of.” He said. Jimmy looked out the window helplessly, “Is there anyone out there you can ask?”
“If we go out there we’ll give you away. They know we’ve allied ourselves with the son of Adam and Eve and quite a few of them are interested in finding out what you taste like.” Vengeance said practically. Jimmy stared at him, “What?”
“Demons enjoy human flesh.” The angel said with a small shudder. Vengeance and Christ nodded, “They were promised humans along with angel blood and that is not something they will walk away from.” Christ said. “Have you two ever eaten someone?” Jimmy asked suspiciously. Vengeance and Christ gave him toothy smiles, “Not a whole someone.” Jimmy watched them warily, “I think I need to re-evaluate you two again.” He said drily.
From the corner of his eye he saw the wall begin to shimmer again and he stepped back from it. From the shimmer a familiar dark head appeared and he ran over and pounced on Synyster before he was through. The angel laughed and hugged him tightly, “I’m glad to see you safe too Jimmy.” He murmured kissing his temple. “Vengeance and Christ are gonna eat me.” He told him. Synyster laughed again and his dark wings folded around him blocking the rest of the room. Jimmy’s head shot up when Christ and Vengeance yelped in surprise, “What? Did they get in?” he asked fearfully. Synyster kept his arms and wings in place and calmed him. “It’s all right love, Shadows, Mathew has changed some.” He whispered finally releasing him. Jimmy hesitantly looked over the arch of his wing and easily found Shadows standing by the bed. Vengeance and Christ were fluttering around him looking over his grey and gold wings curiously. He stared at the beautiful wings and then looked back at Synyster, “What happened?” he breathed. Synyster wrapped an arm around his waist and hugged him close, “No fucking clue.” The Eldur angel stared at Mathew speechless until something batted the window. “We can’t stay here.” She said shakily, she tried to pry her eyes from Mathew’s wings but every time they found their way back. Mathew looked out the window and a deep growl vibrated the air. “What’s going on?” Synyster asked also looking out the window. Jimmy couldn’t see much since his wings had risen again.
“I think every demon in Dimmur is searching the earth plane for a meal.” Vengeance said. Synyster hissed lowly and Jimmy rested his head on his shoulder, “They’ve been out there for awhile now.” He murmured. “How did you free Shadows, Mathew, whatever he’s calling himself?” Vengeance asked. “He was in the pit.” A small shudder trembled through Synyster and Jimmy hugged him a little tighter. The angel kissed his temple and continued. “He freed himself when he tore out part of the wall holding him. He fought with Lucifer.” His head turned and he hugged Jimmy tightly before releasing him. “Fallen and demons alike saw him weak and now everyone is taking advantage of the situation.”
“Can you guys make them leave?” Jimmy asked looking at Mathew, usually when it came to bossing demons around Shadows was the angel to go to but now that he wasn’t quite Shadows anymore he didn’t know. Mathew stared out the window, “Probably not. If they’re this frenzied they won’t be keen on returning to the crypts and the scraps the Fallen throw them.”
“So what do we do?” Jimmy jumped a little when the early morning light illuminated a dark form gliding slowly past the window. Mathew bared his teeth, “We need to leave, the scent of angel is strong in here and it won’t be too much longer before they trace it and descend on this place.”
“Where do we go? If they’re here they’re everywhere and they’re certainly going to be curious about a grey and gold winged angel.” Christ said carefully stroking the grey feathers. Jimmy hesitantly walked over and took a closer look at Mathew’s wings in the growing light; the gold flashed brightly in some places and in the shadows reflected bronze. “You don’t know what happened?” he asked carefully fixing a twisted feather. Mathew shook his head, “I woke up like this.”
“Perhaps…” the small Eldur angel started but stopped when the larger Dimmur angels and demons looked at her. She took a breath and looked out the window to the morning sun. “Perhaps a Fallen can be redeemed. No Fallen can ever return to Eldur, but maybe there is enough compassion in you for Dimmur to reject you.”
Synyster laughed humorlessly, “So now you are unwanted by Eldur and Dimmur. What are you going to do now?” he asked stroking the arch in his wing. Mathew wrapped an arm around his waist and hugged him close to his body, “Do you still want me?” he murmured. Synyster leaned his head back, “Of course.” Mathew pressed a sweet kiss to his lips, “That is the only thing I care for.” The demons broke up the moment with catcalls and kissy sounds. Jimmy tried to hide a laugh and failed. Mathew swatted at Vengeance while he darted around the tiny room. The Eldur angel hid a smile behind her hand while she watched them.
“I’ll return to Eldur.” The angel said softly after they had died down some, “If Satan no longer has a Berserker on his hands they won’t be as hesitant in letting the Avengers and Guardians loose.” Part of the wall began to shimmer and Jimmy left his Fallen and demons to hug the small angel. “Stay safe James, if you ever need me just call.” She whispered hugging him back tightly. He nodded and breathed his grandma’s scent one last time before letting her go. “Who was that?” Mathew asked. Jimmy stared at the now solid wall and was hit with a wave of exhaustion, “Long, long story.” He muttered.
Outside there was a scream and Jimmy tried to run to the window but Mathew’s strong arm stopped him and heavy wings wrapped around him, “We need to go James.” He said softly. “But someone’s hurt.” He argued trying to pry his arm off his waist. “A lot of people will be hurt before the sun is high.” He answered still keeping his voice low. “We can’t do anything to help. If the demons catch sight of an angel they’ll just become more uncontrollable and it will be easy for them to overpower you.” He kissed the side of his head, “I know you want to help, but we need to leave before they trace the angel scent.” Jimmy gave up and let the angel pull him away from the window. “What do I need to pack?” he asked dully wincing when someone else screamed. Demon wings thrummed through the air and occasionally struck the window with an angry snarl. Mathew watched them dart past, “Anything you think you’ll need, it will be awhile before they’re rounded up.”
