"You're on a simple delivery run." Dr. Death Defying handed a list to Cyanide. As she scanned the list, he continued, "You're going to the old hospital in Edgeton and getting medicines for the doc. There have been no sightings anywhere near there, but keep your eyes peeled."
Cyanide nodded and handed the list to Polyphonic for her to learn it as well. "We're taking the list with us, but it's best to memorize as much as you can so if we happen to lose the list, it's not a total loss."
"Just try not to lose it," Dr. Death warned.
Cyanide saluted, "Aye, captain."
Rolling his eyes, he continued, "If you come across Dracs, don't pick a fight with them. Hide. Run. Whatever, just don't fight. Got it?"
"Got it." Cy put her thumbs up and Poly nodded, still scanning the list. "Anything else we need to know before we go?"
"No, but keep the two-way handy and keep the radio tuned in. Anything you need to know, I'll tell you by those two. And tell me if you see anything out of the ordinary."
"Will do."
"Alright, get going."
Cyanide dragged Polyphonic out the door and the hopped in Neon Nights. As Cy started her up and drove off, Party Poison, Fun Ghoul, Kobra Kid, Jet Star, and Lost Star all filed in back door of the diner. Show Pony emerged from the broadcast room. "They gone?" he asked.
Dr. D nodded confirmation. "Yeah. It's about time we had that talk."
***
Cyanide and Polyphonic stopped at a seemingly abandoned gas station on old route 59. Cy pulled up to one of the pumps and started to get out. "Where are we?" Poly asked.
"This is Scorching Retribution's gas station." Cy looked down at the steering wheel. "After he went missing, Serene Madness took it over and Radiant Psychosis has been helping her out. They take shifts. When one's working the gas station, the other's working at the store. Serene usually straightens up the shop and mans the front end. Rad usually guards the entrances."
"Rad? About six foot four, with squinty amber eyes…?"
"Yeah."
"He gives me the creeps."
Cyanide laughed. "Yeah, he gives everybody the creeps. And that huge ass head of his?" Poly nodded for her to continue. "Yeah, it's completely empty. He doesn't have any brain except the one in his dick."
"That explains a lot."
"He look you up and down too?" Poly nodded. "Well, then I guess it's a good thing you're not going to be dealing with him today."
"What do you mean?"
Cy smiled. "Today's his day to work the gas station. He's gonna be out here in a few minutes. You're lucky ass is staying in the car."
"Oh, that makes me feel so much better," Poly's voice dripped with sarcasm.
"It's either that or you stand out here and talk to him." Poly shook her head vehemently. "Alright, then. No sarcasm." Poly still looked worried about having Rad anywhere near her. Cy sighed. "Look, do you want to know the trick with him? Look angry. Look like you could take down and elephant in one punch, you're so mad. He'll leave you alone. He won't even look at you." When Poly looked confused, she explained, "He likes his girls meek. If you look like a scared bunny rabbit, he'll bug the hell out of you until you cave or you run away. If you look pissed off and confident in your ability to kick his ass if he tries anything, he'll leave you alone." She opened the door to leave but stopped with her leg sticking out of the car. "It also helps to get really close to the boys. You know, Party and the others. He's terrified of them."
"Why?"
As soon as the question left Poly's mouth, Rad emerged from the front of the gas station. "I'll tell you when we leave," Cy said as she exited the car. Before she shut the door, she added, "Remember: look mean."
Cyanide was gone for ten minutes while Radiant Psychosis gassed up Neon Nights. Poly sat in the car and watched him through the mirrors. He occasionally stole glances at her, trying to figure out who she was, but he mostly left her alone. Once, he tapped on the window to get a look at her face. She gave him her best death-glare and he backed off.
When Cyanide walked out of the gas station with a bundle of food, Rad had just finished pumping and walked up to stand in front of her. He stood a foot and a half taller than Cy, but his posture showed she was the dominant personality.
"Who's she?" Rad asked, gesturing to the car.
"None of your business."
"Is she that new refugee?"
Cyanide feigned confusion. "What?"
Radiant did his best charming smile. On any girl that didn't know him, it might have worked, but Cy knew better. "Come on, Cy," he said, rubbing her arm. "You know which girl I’m talking about. The one you left the store with."
Cy brushed past him and put the food in the car. Before Rad could do anything, she shut the door and rounded on him. "Okay, first off, you know better than to touch me. Second off, you shouldn't have been able to see the exit I left from yesterday. Keep it up, Rad, and I'll tell Mad that you've been abandoning your post to go chasing girls. How do you think she'll react?" Rad paled. "Furthermore, she's under the care of Party and the boys. You remember what happened the last time you went after one of the girls under their protection?" Rad grasped his left arm, reflexively. "Exactly. And by the looks of it, she's gotten closer to Ghoul than the rest of them." Rad backed away. Cy smirked. "That's what I thought."
Before Rad could say anything, Cy got in the car and closed the door. He turned around and stalked back into the gas station. Cy turned in her seat and grabbed two cans of food, handing one to Poly. The cans were pristine white with the BLI emblem plastered on the front.
"I'm not eating this." Poly threw the can in the back. It made a dull clink as it hit the other cans.
"There's nothing else to eat. You're eating it." Cy fished the can back out and handed it to her.
"No." Poly shook her head. "I don't know what they do to that food, but it wouldn't surprise me if they drugged it too."
"I've been eating this crap for years and you see me. I'm fine. So have Party and the boys."
"No."
"Well, then the mission is going to take a hell of a lot longer than you thought because Neon and I aren't moving until you eat."
Poly looked at Cy. She was stubborn as a bull but Cy was worse. Cy would risk pissing off Dr. Death Defying just to prove a point. Poly snatched the can and began opening it, stomaching her discomfort.
***
"I'm not saying we trust her implicitly," Jet Star explained. "What I'm saying is we at least give her the opportunity to gain our trust. You guys aren't giving her that opportunity."
Party looked at his bushy-haired friend. "What do you suggest, Jet?"
"Well, first off, stop looking at her like an enemy. She's never going to tell us anything if we all treat her like she doesn't belong." He made it a point to stare at Lost. "Yes, she knows more than she's telling us, but that could be for more reason than she's just a spy." Before Lost or anyone else could protest, Jet continued. "I'm not saying she's definitely not. I could be wrong and she could really be a spy, but I honestly don't think she is."
"Why not?" Fun Ghoul had been quiet, but he decided to contribute. "Why don't you think she's a spy?"
"You saw the look in her eyes when Party told us about the Dracs."
Fun Ghoul nodded. "Yeah. She squeezed the hell out of my hand." He stared Party in the eyes. "You can't fake fear like that."
"Why would she be afraid of Dracs if she's a spy?" Kobra Kid asked, genuinely confused.
It was Lost's turn to speak. "Maybe she was afraid they'd kill her before her job was finished."
"Maybe, but it's unlikely." All eyes turned to Dr. D. "If she was a die-hard BLI supporter, she wouldn't be afraid of dying. And if she was high enough up to be trusted as a spy, she certainly wouldn't be afraid of a few Dracs. She'd have an out in case something like that happened."
"So, what do we do?"
"Well, Jet," Dr. D began, "out of all of us, you've got the best relationship with her right now. Take her under your wing and teach her." Jet Star looked resolute, but Lost looked at Dr. D like he'd gone mad. Dr. D looked him square in the eyes. "We treat her like a refugee. That's the only way we're going to get anything out of her, so deal with it."

Cyanide Extasy and Polyphonic Arrhythmia drove down old route 59 toward Edgeton. "So, you never told me why Rad's scared of the guys," Poly reminded Cy.
"Remember what I said about looking mean because Rad likes his girls meek?" Poly nodded. "Well, he went chasing a girl once when Party and the boys were within earshot. She rejected every one of his advances, but she was shy, so in Rad's mind that meant she was trying to keep him interested." Poly furrowed her brow in confusion. Cy tried to explain. "Have you read Pride & Prejudice?" When Poly nodded, Cy continued, "Well, the reaction Mr. Collins has when Lizzy rejects his offer of marriage…? Yeah, that's the reaction Rad gets. That boy isn't right. He's got some serious problems. Mad and I keep him on a pretty tight leash, but sometimes, he gets loose and we need help. Anyway, he started getting pretty physical with this girl and she didn't like it. She tried to run, but you've seen him. The fucker's huge. And she's shorter than I am, so you get the idea. Anyway, Fun Ghoul heard it first. He dragged the rest of them behind him to see what was going on. When he saw Rad grabbing the girl's arms so bad he was bruising her, he completely flipped. He grabbed Rad and started wailing on him. Party and Kobra had to drag him off so he wouldn't kill him." Cy's mouth twisted into a satisfied smirk. "He broke three ribs, his nose, his arm, and cracked his skull. Not to mention the two black eyes and busted jaw. The doc had a hell of a time patching him up." Cy looked at Poly. "Anyway, he's terrified of them now- especially Ghoul. The other three cornered him when he was still recovering and told him that if they ever saw or heard of him doing that to another girl, they wouldn't stop Fun Ghoul. They'd let him go, even if he killed him. They don't like him. If he ever tries anything with you, let them know. You're safe as long as you're with them."
"And with you?"
Cy smiled. "Well, I might shoot his dick off, but physically that's about all I can do." Poly laughed. "I've threatened to do it enough times, though he's terrified of me. Mad, on the other hand… Mad's got a mean streak a mile wide. She's almost as bad as Ghoul."
"Really?"
"Yeah. She's like everyone's mother hen. She'll baby you if you need it, but you make her mad and she'll let you have it. And heaven forbid you hurt any of us."
"Bad?"
Cy expelled a large breath through pursed lips. Poly thought it sounded a lot like a strong gust of wind. "Have you ever seen footage of a lion protecting her cubs?"
"No."
"Well, with the lion, there's enough left of the enemy for the mother to feed her children. With Mad, there's not so much left…" She stared blankly at the road, driving on autopilot, as she remembered. "I was cornered by two Dracs once. They took great pleasure in fishing for information." Cy's stare turned cold and angry. She shook it off and continued, "Anyway, Mad came by at just the right time and went ballistic. When she was through, where they didn't have burns from her raygun, they had throwing knives sticking out." She looked at Poly. "She doesn't get up close and personal, but with her knives and her gun, she's definitely a force to be reckoned with."
Poly looked at her nervously. "She throws knives…?"
" Yeah. She's got damn good aim with them too." Cy smiled at her. "Just remember not to make her mad." Poly stared at her with her mouth slightly agape. "Honestly, when you meet her, I think you'll like her. She's really very nice. She just… spazzes."
"What?"
"She kinda has an on/off switch for certain emotions. When she flips it on, she looks like she's over-exaggerating her feelings, but she's not. She spent years holding her emotions back, so it's like she's got too much excess and when she feels it, she over-feels it." Cy looked at Poly like she was desperately trying to get her to understand. "Make any sense?"
"No, but I'm sure if I see it, it will."
"Oh, trust me," Cy began as the hospital came into view, "you'll see it." She drove Neon around the back and into the entrance for the underground garage. The portion near the entrance looked a little run down, but the further back into the garage the girls went, the more cracked and broken it appeared. They came across a pile of rubble and Cy hid Neon behind it. She and Poly got out and made their way to the service entrance, partially hidden behind debris. "Everything we need will be in the third floor store room. It's a good thing too because most of the upper floors have either already been looted by us, or they're completely destroyed."
Together, the two killjoys made their way to the third floor. Debris had been cleared from the stairs, but the larger pieces still remained. In some places, they had to climb completely over chunks of wall. The journey on the stairs was precarious, but once they were through, the hallway on the third floor was clear.
It didn't take long for Poly and Cy to find the store room. Cy pulled the medicines from the shelf and filled the back, checking each one for radiation. Poly kept watch at the door. A Drac attack was unlikely, but, in the zones, it was better to be paranoid than unobservant.
They were heading for the stairs when Cy heard four car doors slam outside. "Shit!" she whispered as she ran for a window. She crouched low to the floor and peered just enough above the windowsill to see a car and four Dracs in the front of the hospital. "How the fuck did they find out about this place?" She turned to Poly. "Did you grab the radio?"
"No, I thought you did."
"Fuck!" Cy looked at the floor, then back out the window. "They're headed for the garage. We have to get to Neon and get the radio. We have to warn Dr. D."
"He told us not to fight."
"We may not have a choice." Cy's eyes reflected Poly's fear. Cy ran for the stairs, but Poly didn't move. "Come on!" Cy nearly screamed.
"I can't." Poly's voice shook with fear.
"Get over it! We have to get that radio!"
"I can't!" Her voice was more of a squeal than anything else.
Cy grabbed her shoulders and spun her around. "Think of who you left behind, then replace your fear with that anger." She waited until Poly's eyes turned hard; it didn't take long. "Let's go."
The girls ran down the stairs. The obstacles they had to cross on the way up seemed less of a problem on the way down. They made it to the service entrance in record time, but the Dracs were already in the garage, heading toward the door.
"Alright," Cy spoke quickly, "we have about a five second window to do this. You grab the radio, I'll cover you." Poly nodded, her jaw set. "Now!" Poly threw open the door and ran for the car. Cy opened fire on the Dracs, hitting two in the shoulder; her gun was set to kill. The rubble and the incline of the garage made it difficult to aim, but she managed to make decent hits. The Dracs' shots flew past her head, but she didn't notice. She just focused on giving Poly cover fire.
Poly snatched the radio from the front seat and spun around to head back to Cy. When she turned, she was glad to see Cy holding her own. She had her back and it made her feel safe. Suddenly, Cy was hit in the chest, just below her left shoulder. She screamed in pain and fell at the door. Poly tightened her gip on the radio and ran to her friend's side. "Cy!"
Cy handed Poly her raygun with her left hand, clutching her chest with her right. Her voice was laced with pain. "Use it. Get those fuckers."
Poly shook her head, worry and fear in her eyes. "I'm not allowed. I don't know how to use it."
"It's easy. Just point and shoot. Do it enough and you might actually hit something. If you need to, there's a spare in my bag."
Poly stared at the raygun in horror, but reached for it anyway. She found a hole in the rubble and peeked through. She could see three of the Dracs advancing toward them; she couldn't see the fourth. She pointed the raygun at the first one and fired. She missed, but her wild shot hit the second squarely in the chest, killing him instantly. None of them reacted. They continued to advance, firing wildly at the pile of rubble.
With a mixture of joy and frustration, she fired again, this time hitting the first in the leg. Her third shot hit him in the chest and he went down. Her first two shots missed the third Drac, but her third hit his right shoulder. He slowed, but still stalked forward. Her next three shots hit him in the chest and shoulders before he finally fell.
"Behind you!" Cy screamed.
Poly turned to see the fourth Drac had circled around the pile of rubble and come up behind her. She twisted around and fired wildly, shooting his gun from his hand. The Drac grabbed a piece of rebar from the rubble and swung. It smashed into her left arm, knocking her down and leaving a bloody red line on her skin. She dropped the raygun.
The Drac dropped the rebar and reached for his gun as Cy struggled to find her spare. Before she could pull the gun out of her bag, he fired another shot, hitting her in the stomach. She fired and hit him in the leg, smirking as he dropped to his knee.
With a large wooden board in her hand, Poly stood behind the downed Drac. She ignored the searing pain that ran through her left arm and swung the board like a bat. She struck the Drac from behind, hitting him on the right side of his head. His neck made a sickening crack as it broke, his body fell limp at her feet.
Poly didn't stop to examine her work or even to check to see if he was dead. She darted over to Cy's side. "Cy! Cy, are you okay?"
Cyanide shoved the radio into Poly's hands. "Contact Dr. D. Tell him Dracs sighted at pickup point." She gripped Poly's hand harder as she coughed. "Use those exact words. Don't say the location, just say pickup point."
"You're not bleeding. Why is there no blood?" Poly spoke quickly as her panic rose. "That's means you're gonna be okay, right?"
"Just get on the damn radio!" Cy's voice was strong, but it was faultering, weakening with the strain to stay conscious.
Poly pulled the mic up and started to speak.
***
"Dr. D? Party Poison? Anyone?!" Polyphonic Arrhythmia's panicked voice sounded over the radio.
Dr. Death Defying and the killjoys all ran to the radio. "Poly, what's the matter?" Party Poison asked as he snatched the microphone from its cradle.
"Dracs. Pickup point." She was panicking, her breathing rapid, her speech broken from fear.
"Poly, slow down. What's the situation?"
Poly took a deep breath. "They're dead. But Cy's been shot!" There was a pause where Poly looked back at Cy. "She's getting sleepy, but there's no blood! I don't know what to do?"
"Can you drive?"
"Yeah, but I don't know how. I never learned."
"The gas pedal is the thin pedal on the right, the brake is the wide pedal on it's left. You use only your right foot for both pedals. Do you remember how you got there?"
"I think so." Poly stopped and thought a moment. "I'm pretty sure."
"Alright. Get Cy in the car, with the medicine, and drive as quickly as you can. Stop for no one. And whatever you do, keep her awake."
"Okay." Poly nodded and put away the mic. She dragged Cy to the car, never noticing the black and blue bruise covering the entire upper half of her arm. She pulled out of the garage, taking great care not to damage Neon Nights. "Cy, why aren't you bleeding?"
Cy grunted. "Raygun blasts cauterize the wound as it passes through the body."
"That's good though, right?" Poly never took her eyes off the road. Driving was easier than she thought it would be, but she didn't want to risk wrecking for a stupid reason. "That means you'll be okay, right?"
"No." Cy grunted and shifted in pain, still trying to remain awake. "The cauterization cut off the blood flow but chances are, I'm bleeding internally."
Poly increased her speed. She was traveling at well over ninety miles per hour. "What else do we need to worry about besides the internal bleeding?" Her voice shook with tears. She was trying to hold them back, but the more she thought about Cy, the harder it was.
"Shock. If I go into shock, I-" Cy's breathing worsened. "I could-"
Poly looked over at her friend in horror. She was beginning to pass out. "Cy?" No response. Poly's voice got louder. "Cy?" Cy's hair fell across her face as her head drifted forward. "Cy!"
