Part 4 – Speechless:
“Oh boy you’ve left me speechless”
- Lady GagaThere was definitely something different about Zack when he returned to New York after his holiday in California. He was much happier then he’d ever been and it seemed like nothing could bring him down. He spent most of his spare time on his phone or on his computer talking to Brian. It was the most exciting part of his day.
And while this made Matt happy for his friend, it also worried him deeply as he wondered how long his friend’s happy buzz would turn into desperate pining and unhappiness for not having his boyfriend.
Sure enough, as the days slowly turned into weeks, Zack’s demeanor changed from being the happy, worry free person to someone who was both stressed out and lonely. His sleeping pattern had changed to which he’d stay up until the early hours of the morning just talking to Brian, which made him tired and cranky while he was at work.
And while he was at work, he couldn’t help but let his mind wander into the most depressing and foolish thoughts. He couldn’t help but think about Johnny’s warning that Brian was a player and what he did to Alex in the past, which only added to insecurities. He couldn’t help but worry about the fact that Brian might have found someone else in California while he was on the other side of the country.
He knew that he was stressing about this issue far too much and he knew that Brian wouldn’t do anything like that to him, but he still couldn’t help but get upset about it. He found himself barely eating or sleeping, and surviving mostly on coffee and cigarettes, taking up the bad habit again after all the stress.
He didn’t see anything wrong with the way he was living, unaware of just how much it was worrying Matt.
Matt saw his opportunity to finally confront Zack about his concerns one day at work when he cornered his friend, who was standing outside on one of the designated smoking balconies, just lighting up his first cancer stick. Matt took a deep breath before he slid open the glass door and stepped out to talk to his friend.
Zack turned around at the sound of the door opening and smiled when he saw Matt stepping onto the balcony, closing the door behind him. “Hey Matt, how are you?” He smiled as he exhaled a breath of smoke.
“Yeah, I’m alright. How are you?” Matt said as he covered his mouth and coughed. He hated the smell of cigarette smoke.
“Can’t complain.” Zack shrugged as he exhaled another deep breath of smoke. Matt coughed again and Zack looked at him oddly. “Everything alright, man?”
“You know I hate the smell of that shit, Zack.” Matt said shortly, covering his mouth as he coughed again. “Any chance you could put that out? I really need to talk to you about something.”
“Okay.” Zack said slowly as he took one last puff before putting out his cigarette in the ash tray that was hanging off the balcony. “What did you want to talk about?”
Matt stayed silent as he formed the words in his head before he decided to speak. “Is everything alright?” He finally said after a few minutes.
“Of course it is.” Zack said, almost defensively. “Why would you ask something like that?”
“I’m worried about you.” Matt answered.
“Why?” Zack snapped.
“I know you haven’t been sleeping and you have been loosing weight at an alarming rate that it’s made me worry that you haven’t been eating properly.” Matt said defiantly, keeping his eyes locked onto Zack’s. “I just want to know that you are alright.”
“Look, everything is fine!” Zack snapped again. “And so what if I’ve lost weight? I needed too anyway.”
“There was nothing wrong with the way you looked before.” Matt said strongly. “How’s everything going with Brian?”
“Everything is going good.” Zack said calmly, but Matt could see the look that came over his face when he asked him. It looked like Zack could almost cry.
“Are you sure?” Matt pressed on.
“I just miss him.” Zack said quietly, dropping his gaze. “It’s stressing me out being so far away from him. I miss him so much.”
“When are you seeing him again?” Matt asked quietly.
“Not until next Friday.” Zack said, looking up at Matt again. “I don’t want you to worry about me, Matt. I’m alright and I’m going to be even better when I see him.”
Matt looked at him warily for a moment. “As long as you’re alright.”
“I am.” Zack smiled weakly at his friend. “We gotta get back to work now.”
The pair walked back through the sliding glass door and back to their cubicles, diving straight back into their work. While it did squash down Matt’s fear that something was very wrong with Zack, there was still something in the back of his mind that made him still worry about his best friend’s wellbeing.
---
The next week and a half seemed to drag on for Zack. Every day felt like torture, but it also gave him something to look forward to at the end of it. Even though he was constantly in contact with Brian, it only seemed to add to his heartache. He was so desperate to see Brian that he would have quit his job just so he could go and see him.
He held back though, and waited until the day he was flying out before seeing his boyfriend.
Matt had agreed to drop him at the airport after work on Friday and during the half an hour drive to the airport, Zack could barely keep still. He was constantly fidgeting, whether it was with the radio, his fingers or even with his phone. “Everything alright?” Matt asked with a bemused look on his face.
“Yeah, just excited.” Zack said with a sheepish grin that Matt couldn’t help but laugh at.
Matt dropped him at the airport and Zack made his way into the terminal where he checked in before waiting until it was time to board his flight. He didn’t have to wait long before his flight was starting to board. He eagerly boarded the plane with one final text to Brian before he turned his phone off.
The flight seemed to take longer then it had done the last time, he was focused on reading the magazine he had brought with him, but his lack of sleep finally got the better of him and he fell asleep against the window. He stayed asleep for most of the flight until he felt a stewardess shaking him awake and letting him know that they were close to landing.
It wasn’t long until the flight landed and Zack was heading off the plane to collect his luggage and his rental car for the next couple of days. He picked up a can of Red Bull before he collected his car. He turned his phone back on and waited to see if he’d gotten a message from Brian yet. He felt a little deflated to see that he hadn’t received a message, but took it in his stride as he sent Brian a text, letting him know he had landed and was heading over.
The drive to Brian’s house was slightly difficult. He had never been to Brian’s house at night before and it had been just over a month since he had been to California. But he did remember that Brian’s house was right on the beach and he was confident he would see Brian’s car in the driveway.
He managed to find it after a few wrong turns and nearly having to call Brian for directions. He saw his boyfriend’s black Mustang in the driveway and he pulled in with a smile on his face. His smile faded when he saw a red car parked on the grass out the front of the house. He didn’t know that car and was slightly confused as to why Brian would be having visitors when he knew that he was coming.
He decided not to bring his luggage out of the car just yet and walked to the front door of Brian’s large house. He knocked three times and waited a few moments before knocking again. There was no answer. He reached forward and tried the door knob, which opened immediately when he tried.
He felt strange as he stepped into Brian’s house. The TV was still on but there was no one in the lounge room. “Brian?” He called out nervously, but no one answered.
He went to most of the rooms in his boyfriend’s house before he saw that the door that led to the master bedroom was almost fully closed. He cautiously approached it, fearing the worst and peeked through the crack. He could see Brian’s face and he had a seductive smile on his face.
He smiled as he pushed open the door all the way, but as soon as he did, his smile instantly faded. He saw Brian lying naked on his bed with another man giving him head. He was beyond words. His deepest fears about his relationship had come true. Brian had found someone else in California.
He let out a whimper and that was what caused Brian to look at the door. His eyes widened in shock when he saw Zack standing there, frozen like a statue. “Brian?” He whimpered, trying to hold back the tears that desperately wanted to escape.
“Zacky, no.” Brian said in a barely audible voice as he pushed the other man off of him and climbed off the bed and tried to get to Zack.
“How could you?!” Zack screamed at his lover as he raced down the stairs and out of the house, slamming the door before he leapt into his rental car, ready to drive far away.
As soon as he put the car into reverse, he saw Brian standing in front of the car just staring at him. He kept his eyes locked onto Brian’s as he reversed out of the driveway and sped down the road as fast as he could, trying to get as far away from that place as he could.
He drove towards the only place that he knew would be safe, the place he should have spent most of his last vacation at. He pulled up in Johnny’s driveway and turned the engine off. He knew that tears were rolling down his cheeks as he could hardly believe he’d been stupid enough to get into another relationship like this. He wiped his eyes and got out of the car and walked towards the front door.
He knocked two times before the door was answered by his old friend. “Zack!” He exclaimed when he realized who it was, but suddenly became concerned when he saw how upset his friend was. “Is everything alright?” He asked carefully.
“Not really.” Zack said with a sniff. “Is it okay if I can stay here tonight?”
“Of course it is.” Johnny said quietly. “Do you want some help with your luggage?”
“Yes please.” Zack said with another sniff as Johnny darted past him and retrieved his suitcase before bringing it into the house. “Thank you.” He said as he sat down on the lounge and Johnny handed him a glass of water.
“Do you want to tell me what happened?” Johnny asked carefully, keeping a close eye on his friend.
“I just walked in on Brian having sex with someone else.” Zack said bluntly as he took a sip of water.
“I’m so sorry Zack. I really am.” Johnny said reassuringly.
“I should have listened to you and not gotten involved with him at all.” Zack said, taking a deep breath. “It would have saved me a whole lot of heartache and I wouldn’t be cryin’ like a fuckin’ girl right now.”
“I thought he’d changed Zack, I’m really sorry.” Johnny said with a soothing tone, but it didn’t seem to be working on Zack.
“Why are you apologizing for something that isn’t your fault?” Zack snapped.
“I feel terrible for you. I’m sorry for caring about you.” Johnny said shortly.
“I shouldn’t have overreacted like that.” Zack said quietly.
“Its okay, whatever.” Johnny said with a shrug. “I’m just as shocked as you are. Whenever I saw Brian, he wouldn’t shut up about you. He was infatuated with you.”
“Obviously not enough.” Zack said offhandedly. “Anyone who says they love someone and then go and have sex with another person is a fucking joke. I don’t want anything to do with him.”
Johnny smiled weakly at him, not really knowing what to say. He then heard a weird buzzing sound. “What is that noise?” He asked.
“It’s my phone.” Zack sighed, taking out his BlackBerry from his pocket and put it onto the table. “It’s Brian. He’s been trying to ring me non-stop since I left his house.”
“Are you going to answer it?” Johnny asked stupidly.
“Why the fuck would I want to talk to him?” Zack snapped.
“Do you want me to answer it?” Johnny asked warily, watching Zack carefully.
“Do whatever you want.” Zack said shortly, sliding the phone across the coffee table.
Johnny clicked the accept button almost immediately and said “hello?” into the handset. “It’s Johnny, and no Brian, he doesn’t want to talk to you.” Zack was watching his friend carefully. “Why do you think he doesn’t want to talk to you?” He snapped into the phone, bringing a smile to Zack’s face. “He wants to see you.” Johnny said quietly and the smile instantly faded from Zack’s face.
“Tell him…no, wait” Zack said as he reached for his phone. He held the handset slightly away from his face and snapped into it, “Meet me at the beach at 12.30pm. But if you want me to show up, don’t ring me again before then or I won’t turn up.” He then hung up the phone before placing it back on the coffee table.
“Are you sure you’re doing the right thing?” Johnny asked him.
“I’m not giving him another chance if that’s what you think.” Zack answered. “We’re done. But I have the decency to tell him to his face.”
---
The next morning, Zack was kept very busy. He arranged to have his flight moved forward to this afternoon instead of on the Sunday afternoon and had arranged for Val to come pick him up from the airport when he landed because Matt was busy tonight. It relieved him slightly that it would be Val greeting him at the airport. Matt always acted strange if he was upset, usually ending in awkward situations, and Val was better dealing with people when they were upset.
He said his goodbye to Johnny and put his luggage in his rental car. He checked the time on his phone, it was 12.14pm. It only took five minutes to drive from Johnny’s house to the beach but he preferred to be early rather then late.
He pulled into the parking lot and was surprised to see Brian’s black Mustang already there. He took a deep breath before stepping out of his car and walking towards an old bench that perched itself right on the edge of the footpath and the beach. He didn’t have to wait long until he heard a car door close and footsteps approach the bench he was sitting on.
He turned to his right and saw Brian sitting there, eyes focused on his hands, refusing to look his way. “Come on, what’s your excuse?” He snapped, folding his arms tightly across his chest.
“I’m sorry.” Brian mumbled, still avoiding Zack’s penetrating gaze.
“It’s not good enough.” Zack said shortly.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.” Brian said quietly, finally turning to look at Zack.
“More like you didn’t mean for me to catch you.” Zack snapped, causing Brian to shoot him a strange look. “I’ve dated someone like you before. I know every line in the book and I’m not falling for those stupid fucking excuses again.”
“I love you Zacky. You mean everything to me.” Brian said sadly.
Zack stared at him blankly for a moment before narrowing his eyes harshly. “If you felt the way you say you did, you wouldn’t have done this to me!” He snapped.
“I don’t know what you want me to say.” Brian mumbled.
“I only came to tell you goodbye because I am a decent man.” Zack snapped again before standing up. “Goodbye Brian.” He said, turning and walking away.
“Zack, wait!” Brian called after him, before he ran to catch up to his former lover. “This doesn’t have to be the end.”
“You had your chance.” Zack spat, glaring maliciously at his former boyfriend. “Have a nice life.”
Zack climbed into his car and drove towards the beach, former lover and beach in the background. It took a lot of strength for him to not cry, but he maintained his composure all the way to the airport and on the plane. It wasn’t until he saw Val waiting near the baggage collection that he finally burst into tears and ran to hug her.
“It’s going to be okay, Zacky.” Val said soothingly to him as the pair collected his luggage and walked out of the terminal, arms linked tightly together. “You can tell me everything on the drive home.”
