Part 4:
The next few weeks for the members of Avenged Sevenfold had been nothing short of stressful. The four other members watched on helplessly as their rhythm guitarist started to look sicker and sicker. They had tried to intervene on numerous occasions, but were all given the cold shoulder by the man that was clearly in desperate need of help.
Brian sighed as he lit up yet another cigarette as he leant against the side of the bus. He had had enough of listening to sounds of Zack vomiting, the noise badly covered by the rhythm running the water. He felt guilty as he stood outside their bus; his head could not take any more of this unnecessary stress and he knew that it was beginning to take a toll on the rest of the band too.
Each night that they performed on their current tour, they showed no signs at all that there was any tension between them as they interacted playfully on stage, portraying the façade of their alter egos perfectly. But as soon as they stepped offstage, the rush from the screaming fans was gone and so were the grins that were usually from ear to ear. The five of them were counting down each date on their tour until they would be able to go home and catch up on some much needed relaxation in the privacy of their own homes.
Brian was just putting out his cigarette and starting on another one when he heard the bus door creek open. He turned his gaze to the door just in time to see Zack walking out and lighting up his own cigarette. “Hey.” Brian said as he let out a long breath of smoke.
“Hey.” Zack responded in a hoarse voice that sounded so different to his own.
It was then that Brian noticed the broken blood vessel in Zack’s eye. “What’s wrong with your eye?” He asked, already knowing what it was having had one himself once after a fight in High School.
Zack shrugged. “Dunno. Woke up with it.”
“Doesn’t it hurt?” Brian pressed on as he continued to take long drags on his cigarette.
Zack shrugged again. “Not really. I just try to avoid looking at it.”
It was when Zack pulled his cigarette up to his mouth to take another drag that Brian noticed the rough calluses on the other man’s knuckles. “How the hell did you get calluses on your knuckles?” He asked bluntly.
Zack shrugged but did not answer, instead averting his gaze from his friend and band mate.
Brian took a deep breath as he watched the other man carefully. “You would tell me if something was wrong, wouldn’t you?”
Zack turned his gaze back to the other man and for the first time, Brian could see the hurt in his friend’s green eyes. “Of course.” He said quietly but Brian was far from being convinced as he saw the tears threaten to spill over.
Brian didn’t say anything, just smiled and reached over to give his friend a tight hug before pulling back and dropping the butt of his cigarette onto the grass. “I’ll see you back on the bus.” He said quietly as Zack heard the door of their bus open and close again.
Once he knew that he was alone, Zack let his guard down and let the tears come out as he slid down the side of the bus and landed ass first on the damp grass. He buried his head into his arms as he felt all his doubts and insecurities spill out in the form of tears. He didn’t care that his ass was getting wetter and wetter the longer he stayed on the ground, he would much rather be spilling the tears outside then on the bus with the chance of being overheard.
He didn’t know how long he stayed like that, silently crying, but knew he wasn’t alone anymore when he felt someone sit next to him. He looked to his left and saw Matt sitting next to him, staring intently up into the night sky before finally turning to look at him. “Hey.” He said offhandedly, which took back Zack.
“Hey, what’s up?” Zack asked casually.
Matt watched his friend carefully for a moment before speaking again. “Can you come onto the bus for a minute?”
“Yeah.” Zack spoke in a barely a whisper as his he felt his heart begin to beat faster and faster inside his chest.
He followed Matt silently into the bus and sat down on the closest seat to the door, but that didn’t stop the prying eyes of his other band mates from staring at him and watching his every move like hawks. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat as the other four didn’t look away from him.
“What’s this about?” Zack asked quietly, his heart continuing to beat faster and faster.
“Zack, we’ve all talked long and hard about this and we think in the interest of your wellbeing, that we are going to pull out of the remaining few legs of our tour.” Matt said calmly, even though his voice was anything but.
Zack could feel the tears pooling up again. “But, why?”
Matt took a deep breath before speaking again. “It’s obvious that you aren’t coping too well at the moment and we think you’d be better off home with the rest of us.”
“Did I ever fuckin’ say I didn’t want to keep going?” Zack said loudly as a few tears spilled over. “I want to keep playing!”
“Zack, we can all see you are exhausted and we are too.” Johnny said quietly. “It’s best for all five of us if we just go home and take a break from this.”
“Can any of you see that I don’t want to go home?” Zack tried to plead his case but it appeared to fall on deaf ears. “It’s typical though, that I wouldn’t be included in a group decision like this.” He spat viciously towards them.
“We are doing this for you!” Jimmy snapped back at him. “Do you think any of us want to stop this tour? We are doing this for your benefit, you could at least be grateful!”
“Jim, stop.” Brian said quietly, elbowing his friend in the ribs.
Jimmy closed his eyes for a few moments and took a deep breath before reopening his eyes. “I’m sorry, Zack.” He said quietly, practically mumbling.
Zack opened his mouth to speak but Matt beat him to it. “You can’t change this decision, it has already been finalized. I’m sorry, but it is for the best.”
“When am I ever fuckin’ going to get a say around here?” Zack fumed, standing up and storming back to the bunk area where he flopped on his bed, burying his head deep into the pillows.
“Well that went well, didn’t it?” Jimmy said sarcastically.
“Shut up.” Brian snapped at his friend, who narrowed his eyes towards him.
“You two, stop.” Matt said commandingly. “All of you need to hurry up and start packing your shit. I’ll go tell Zack.”
“I’ll go do it.” Brian said as he stood up and headed towards the bunk area.
He crept through the area, trying to make as little noise as possible. He stopped at Zack’s bunk and carefully pulled back the curtain to see the heart breaking sight of the smaller man crying heavily into his pillow. “Zack?” He asked softly as the other man stirred and the undeniable sign of embarrassment flushed across his cheeks. “We’ve gotta start packing.”
Zack nodded as he rolled out of the bunk and reached for his bag, his eyes diverted completely from the other man who was standing a few bunks up packing away his own clothing. He kept his eyes firmly on his own clothing as he shoved more and more articles into his black shoulder bag.
“Hey Brian?” He called out in a shaky voice, his heart beating faster then it was even out in the front area.
“Yeah?” Brian called back, turning his eyes and smiling the perfect smile he always did.
‘I think there is something wrong.’ Zack said in his head numerous times but he found he didn’t have the courage. He doubted whether he would ever have the courage. “Have you seen my red Misfits shirt?” He asked instead, causing a slightly confused look to come over the lead’s face. “I can’t find it anywhere.”
“Uh, I haven’t.” Brian said casually. “I’ll let you know if I do.”
“Thanks.” Zack said solemnly as he turned back to the task at hand, inwardly cursing his own cowardly actions.
