It was like looking at an explosion. The flowers were everywhere, everywhere, in every shape possible. Thomas found a square-shaped flower in light blue, and when he touched it, silver drops rose from it and evaporated. Red rose-like flowers were circling meters above him. Yellow flowers the size of a car opened as Thomas walked by. And the smell...
‘Binary!’ the avatar shouted from a place high above. Thomas looked up and saw he was standing in the middle of an open lawn, shaped like a perfect circle. Where his feet were, there were only small purple flowers. But a few steps further from the middle, they grew taller and taller, tangling around each other, forming an enormous roof above him.
‘Where are you?’ Thomas asked.
‘Upstairs,’ the avatar laughed.
Thomas walked outside of the lawn and tried to jump as high as he could. He was lifted into the air with such force that he almost missed the other avatar and was shot into the sky. He managed to hold himself back, and landed on the inside of the huge purple flower the other guy was standing in.
‘I’m happy you like it,’ he said.
‘How could I not like it?’ Thomas said. ‘Jesus Christ...’
‘It’s just that I’m happy you’re here. It’s so much more fun with someone else. ’
‘You never take anyone here? But everyone would love this, everyone in the entire world. This is unlike everything I have ever seen. This is something else,’ Thomas mumbled, staring across the unending sea of flowers.
‘I’m always on my own,’ the avatar said.
‘Well, why?’
A silence fell between them as he didn’t reply. Heavy yellow sunlight was reflected in the wings of passing butterflies.
‘The sun is going down,’ the avatar said. ‘It’s always going down here.’
After what seemed like a few minutes, he turned around and looked at Thomas. ‘Can I get you anything?’
Still distracted by the yellow-orange sunrays shining down on the immense field of blooming flowers, Thomas didn’t understand what he was saying.
‘Like what?’
The avatar gestured to their right. ‘I personally really like the peaches you can get there.’
‘Peaches?’
‘Yes. Do you want me to bring one?’
Suddenly Thomas wanted nothing more but to taste the peaches he was talking about. Everything he had seen, heard, smelled or felt had been amazing, and now this guy was telling him there was stuff to taste, as well? He had to try it. He wanted to miss nothing. And if he liked it, it had to be the best thing ever. He nodded.
‘Just wait here.’ The avatar jumped backwards, and flew off after making a flip in the sweet-scented air. Thomas watched him grow smaller and smaller, until he was out of sight.
He simply stood in the flower, and waited. A thousand thoughts, ideas and considerations were going through his head, but the only sound present was the rustling of the plants in the wind and the faint sound of waves crashing on a beach. He closed his eyes, wondering where he really was, where his body on earth was. Maybe it was gone. Maybe he had disappeared altogether, emigrated to the Grid until further notice. He certainly couldn’t feel the chair he had been sitting on anymore. All he felt was the soft, rubbery texture of the flower’s petals beneath his feet, and the soft breeze against his skin. And the beating of his heart, proving that he was still alive somewhere.
‘Here you are,’ the avatar said when he had returned, and threw Thomas the peach he had promised him. Thomas caught it in a reflex, and held it in his hand for a moment, staring at the happy smiley on the avatar’s helmet. He couldn’t figure out what this place was, and he couldn’t figure out who this guy was, either. Was he even a real person, or did he exist only here?
‘They’re really good,’ he said. ‘I guarantee it.’
Thomas remembered he was holding something edible in his hand, and before taking a good look at its beautiful, delicate colours of pink and light yellow, he sank his teeth in it. The other guy was looking at him expectantly, and Thomas hoped the peach wouldn’t be too juicy. It wasn’t. It was perfect, what else? He chewed his bite slowly, and knew that no matter how many of these he would eat, it would never satisfy him. How could he ever eat a normal, regular peach if he returned to the real world? And for that matter, how could he ever eat anything there again?
He threw the seed as far as he could. It landed somewhere in a patch of purple flowers.
‘It’s gonna be a tree the next time I log on,’ the avatar said.
Thomas looked up to him. ‘You ever log off?’
The avatar nodded. ‘I do. I couldn’t be here forever.’
‘Will we have to log off soon?’ Thomas asked, a hint of panic in his heart.
‘Oh, I still have lots of time.’
‘And when you log off, when will you be back?’
The golden helmet showed a line of dots. ‘I don’t know yet.’
‘I have to go here again, as soon as possible,’ Thomas said. ‘Can I come here alone?’
‘As far as I know, you can’t,’ the avatar said. ‘I need to add you to the list.’
Thomas bit his lip, scared at the thought of being unable to come back. ‘Where are you now?’ he asked hesitantly.
What he had expected, happened. The avatar didn’t answer.
‘I can’t tell you.’
‘Oh.’
‘I don’t know you.’
‘Yeah, I understand.’
‘But maybe... I will tell you later,’ the avatar said. Thomas looked at the embarrassed red flashes on the helmet. ‘I think I can trust you.’
Both unwilling to continue talking about it, they turned their attention to the overwhelming scenery. Again, Thomas heard the sound of waves from afar, and asked if there was a beach ahead.
‘There is,’ the avatar said. ‘You wanna check it out?’
‘Of course,’ Thomas said.
The helmet grinned. ‘We’ll be there in no time.’
Following his example, Thomas jumped off the flower and took off, towards the sunset.
