Winds of Destiny(Pt3)
Even in his sleep Sav could feel the pull of another waking night, for all it’s beauty, the mysteries that lurk in the shadows. The need to hunt fresh warm blood, the thrill of the chase quickening the heartbeat, the rush of blood, to feel the flesh tight around his fangs. To taste the persons wants, needs, dreams that are yet to come, desire rose with all that, but it wasn’t desire he was feeling...fear, terror of what he was doing hummed through his veins, it drove him to push his fangs deeper to pull every drop of blood from the person. The smothered cry, gasp of breath…
Sav’s eyes fluttered open, blinking several times to clear the blurriness, bringing the setting sunlight into focus, he then realized it was a dream. Taking a deep soothing breath, he stretched his arm above his head, the other tugging on the blanket to cover his bare chest. By the pattern on the ceiling he was still in sitting room. He vaguely remembered hearing Nick mention being in his bed by sunrise. A smirk tugged the corners of his mouth. ‘That didn’t happen asshole.’ Turning to his side facing the room he fully intended to go back to sleep, instead his eyes landed on Nick sitting in a chair a short distance away. The intensity of his eyes bore into him like a drill. Sav dared to glare back at him until he finally rolled his eyes away, knowing Nick could sit there and stare for hours.
Swinging his legs off the sofa, sitting there a moment looking for his robe. He didn’t see it within reach and opted to use the blanket to wrap around his nude torso as he stood up. He grabbed a half empty bottle on the way to take a shower.
“Rick..” Nick softly called after him. “I want to explain my action from last night.”
A new wave of anger rose inside him, “Explain it to some one who cares.” Stopping in mid stride, Sav whipped back around, one step forward made him trip on the blanket, he never hit the floor. Nick held him by the arm to help steady his balance again. Snatching his arm away, Sav staring hateful daggers at him. “Don’t you ever touch me like that again Nick, if you do, I’ll fucking kill you."
“Is that a threat?”
“No, its a warning.” Sav shot back.
“I seemed to recall the same warning before, that was years ago and there have been many ‘last night’ since then, so your warning holds no merit."
Sav gripped his chin, “Feel free to test that warning, right here, right now.”
When Nick made no move to slap his hand away or a punch to the face, Sav crushed his mouth with his, briefly pushing his tongue in to dance with Nicks. Releasing him after a few seconds, Sav held his eyes a moment before picking up the blanket to leave him standing there.
“We are meeting Crystal for dinner in an hour.” Nick called after him.
The response came as the bathroom door slammed.
Quickly moving to the door, Nick softly knocked. “Rick…”
The door swung open, “What?”
Nick’s eyes roved downward taking in the man before him, then back to his eyes. “Did you hear what I said.”
Sav rolled his eyes. “Fine… whatever.” The door slammed shut again.
Taking his leave, Nick went back out to the sitting room to pour another drink. Retaking his seat, he waited for Sav.
A short time later, Sav breezed in the room, heading straight for the bar.
Nick watched him take a long pull of blood wine. “Feeling better?”
“Nope.” Came his curt reply. Sav noticed the white powdery lines still on the bar from the night before. He stepped over to them, snatched up the rolled bill, then leaned over.
“You shouldn’t be doing that.” Nick said from across the room.
Sav briefly stopped his movements, eyes turned to Nick, a thin smile touched his lips, seconds passed before he leaned back over to snort the powder in both nostrils. Standing up he pinched his nose and wiped away any residue. “I’m surprised you didn’t clean it up.”
“I had other things on my mind.”
“A meaningful apology of what you did this morning.”
Nick held his eyes. “Would it help?”
“No.”
Nick pushed himself from the chair. “We should go, Crystal is likely waiting downstairs.”
“Does my evening attire met your approval?” Sav asked when he stepped from behind the bar.
Nick turned to take in what he was wearing. A waist length, multi-colored leather jacket, pale blue cotton shirt, black leather trousers hugged his toned legs. Several silver chains adorned his neck, black dress boots finished off the look.
“The jacket is…”
“It stays.” Sav cut him off as he went toward the door.
Nick followed after him. “You asked for my approval.”
“As if I would get one.” Sav grumbled.
The rest of the walk down to the dinning area was in silence. The two men were lead to the table Crystal had already secured for them. Nick smiled upon seeing her sitting there, with her chin in her hand, lightly tapping the table.
“Finally.” She said as Sav flopped in the seat across from her.
“Was that directed at me for some reason?” Sav asked.
“No… your twenty minutes late.”
Sav smiled. “Well, that is not that long.”
“For a vampire it isn’t.” Crystal teased back. “So, I want to know why Nick made me get another suite last night. He wouldn’t even let me near the door to ours.”
“I was entertaining guests.” Sav informed her. “What did you do today?”
Crystal looked at him, then around the room. “Are you asking me?”
“Yes, you are the only one here. He…” Sav hesitated as he looked at Nick, “...slept most of the day.”
Nick silently watched them talk, ready to stop any mention of last night if Sav brought it up.
Crystal smile wide, thinking of her day. “Nick arranged for me to tour the Louvre Museum. Crazy early morning flight. I was to excited to sleep, so Dan let me sit in the cock pit...completely different view from there. No, I didn’t distract him to much from his duties of flying the plane.” Crystal glanced down at the plate that was sat in front of her. “Have you been to the Louvre, Rick?”
“Yes,” Sav started as he run his finger lightly over the rim of his glass. “Ages ago with Joe and Rebecca.”
"Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bring up…”
Sav reassured her with a smile. “Don’t be, they are fond memories. One’s that I visit all the time.”
Crystal returned a smile of her own. “Dan was the perfect chaperon, he knows so much about art, sculptures. I didn’t know that about him.”
“He has an extensive collection.” Nick finally joined the conversation. “He is very passionate about art, the creative imagination it takes to paint or sculpt a thing of wonder, beauty.”
“Takes a lot of talent to paint or sculpt. I’m only good at stick figures.”
“Nick has an artsy side, one he is very passionate about using.” Sav smirked. “His creative imagination never misses when painting a work of art.”
“Do you paint Nick?” Crystal glanced at him with surprise.
“No. That is one undertaking I could not master.”
“Of course you did.” Sav leaned on the table to stare directly at him. “Your favorite colors are yellow, black, weird looking green and red.”
“Well, perhaps...” Nick slightly tilted his head, holding Sav’s cold eye. “I can try to paint a master piece on you later.”
Sav nodded his head, then smiled. “So, what was your favorite piece, Crystal?”
“Oh, I don’t know, there were so many. I don’t think we saw everything, such a huge museum.” Crystal looked thoughtful a moment. “The building itself, I think. The architecture of the time is beautiful, you don’t see anything built like that anymore.”
Nick was nodding his head in agreement. “I visited Paris many times over the years during the Louvre expansion. It wasn’t always a museum, Philip II built Louvre Castle, it was his residents at the time. What remains of the castle can still be seen underground.”
Crystal eyes widen. “Wow, I bet it was beautiful then.”
Again, Nick was nodding his head. “It was. The inside was even more extravagant. A bit gaudy is what some would think in today’s standards.”
Pushing her plate away, Crystal wiped her mouth. “I would love go again some day, finish the tour. But what are we doing tonight?”
“You don’t want to talk more about your day?” Nick asked.
Crystal pulled a small piece of bread off and popped in her mouth. “No plenty of time to talk about that. Maybe on another long flight to some where.”
Nick glanced at his watch, “I do have tickets for the opera tonight. Very popular, excellent reviews.”
“Sounds interesting. I’ve never been to opera before.”
Sav sat his glass down and looked at Nick. “That will be a hard pass for me.”
“I thought you liked music.”
“I do Crystal, but opera is way down that list. Though I was going to die of boredom the last time I went.” He pointedly looked at Nick.
“It wasn’t that bad.” Nick chuckled.
“To you.” Sav shot back. “I’m not going again.”
“What are you going to do?” This came from Crystal.
Nick informed him. “These tickets were rather expensive.”
“I don’t know, walk around the city. You can give my ticket to anyone or throw it in the trash, I don’t care.”
“Very well.” Nick momentarily held Sav’s eyes, then looked to Crystal. “Do you want dessert?”
“No, I’m stuffed.” Crystal replied holding up her hand. “Maybe ice cream from that little shop we found last week… after the show.”
“Absolutely.” Nick replied with a smile. “Shall we go, the car will be here soon.”
“But, what about the bill?” Crystal asked as she stood.
“Will be added to the room.”
The trio exited the building, just as the sun was setting below the horizon. Nick glanced up and down the street looking for the car.
“Well, we are a few minutes early.”
Sav shoved his hands in his jacket pockets and moved to the shadows as an uneasy feeling settled over him. Staring down the street to peer deep in the shadows. A few rats scurried about looking for food, a small group of people stood on the corner, as others walked along the side walks. Severally dogs could be heard barking in the distance. Music came from one of the apartment buildings down the street. Normal activity for a city, from what he could feel, just that unease hung in the air. Sav was startled from his observation of his surroundings when some one shook his arm.
Jerking his head straight ahead to see Crystal standing in front of him, he didn’t hear at first, not until his mind cleared.
“I’m sorry,” Crystal began. “I didn’t mean...I called you and didn’t get a response, you were a million miles away.”
“It’s...was deep in thought. What did you ask?”
“The car is here. I wanted to let you know we were leaving, but you didn’t answer.”
Sav glanced up to see Nick standing by the open back door of their car waiting on her, a questioning look to his eyes.
“I’m fine,” Sav leaned forward to kiss her cheek. “Go, have a great time. I’ll see you later.” With that, he set off in hurried steps in the opposite direction of where he was staring a few minutes ago. Ignoring Nick’s reminder of what he warned him about the previous evening.
Watching him disappear in the dark, Nick thought about following him, perhaps to question him about his reaction just moments ago. But he knew he wouldn’t get a straight answer from him, not after last night. As his habit of the past, Sav would ignore him or say hateful things, of which Nick didn’t blame him for. Finally pushing the temptation to follow him Nick ducked into the car, giving the driver the address of where they were heading.
Sav strolled the streets for hours, taking in the city around him. Many of the people he passed greeted him warmly with a nod, or Bonjour. He always liked visiting any part of France, dating way back to when they first started touring here. The people here were always out going and friendly, willing to lend a hand for vacationers. As he walked the streets now, he dropped money to a few homeless people he passed or stopped to listen to the woman playing a violin, its haunting music nearly matched his inner being. Shaking that feeling away, he smiled at the woman and tossed some bills in her case, then continued down the street. He didn’t keep track of how long he had been walking, he was enjoying his time alone, aside from the sounds around him, he didn’t feel obligated to join a conversation or listen to one.
He stopped on the cobblestone walk, looking around at the quieter area, there were more, deeper shadows, but the feeling of uneasiness he had earlier, wasn’t there. Over head the faint stars and waning gibbous moon greeted him. He turned around to gaze up at the building, the thump of music drifted to his ears, the sense of other vampires heavy in the air. He knew what brought him back to this place, he felt comfortable among the strange crowd, no one knew him here, he liked the atmosphere within and no one had approached him the evening before. That all too familiar surge of need within him, made its presents know as he stood there staring at the doors. Taking a deep breath, he blew it out, pulling the door open, stepping inside to shut out the night.
