Chapter 40
The Friday after Thanksgiving - late afternoon
*******************
David walked into the studio to find his mother hugging James.
“Mom?”
James looked up. His eyes were filled with tears.
“Er… excuse me…” he mumbled. “I… er… need to…”
David stared in astonishment as James hurried from the room.
“Mom, what happened?”
“Oh, it’s my fault, I’m afraid. I encouraged him to tell me about his family… The poor boy… it sounds like he was starved of affection as a child… If it hadn’t been for his sister… well, I don’t even want to think about what might have happened to him… but I shouldn’t have probed… I think the memories got a bit too much for him… You’d better go to him, Darling. Please tell him I didn’t mean to upset him… I’m so sorry…”
“I’m sure he knows that, Mom. Don’t worry,” David said, turning to follow James.
“Darling,” she called after him.
He paused and looked over his shoulder.
“He loves you very much,” she said.
“I know, Mom, I know…”
“He’s a lovely boy, Darling. I’d be proud to call him my son…”
*******************
David found James in their room, standing in the dark, gazing out of the window.
“It looks like a scene from a Christmas card out there,” he said, “with the lights and everything…”
Dad must have switched them on to show Mom.
“All it needs is a sprinkling of snow.”
“That’s unlikely this early in the season but we can ask Dad,” David said, moving to stand behind James. “He’s bound to know what the forecast is.”
David slipped his arms around James and bent to kiss his neck.
“I love you,” he whispered in James’ ear.
James turned around to face him.
“Mom says she’s sorry she upset you. She didn’t mean to… I hope she didn’t give you the third degree. She likes to know everything there is to know about everyone… but she gets a bit carried away sometimes, especially with people she really likes…”
David recalled how she’d hardly spent any time with his ex. She hadn’t said as much but he guessed she knew Ingrid was wrong for him from the start. He wished she’d said something…
“I know she can be kinda overwhelming…”
“She’s wonderful,” James said, interrupting David’s flow. “She’s everything I always wanted in a mother…”
David smiled.
“I’ve always thought she was pretty special myself…”
“No, I mean it, Davy. You are so lucky… I wish my mother had half her kindness, half her compassion… Heck, I just wish my mother had shown some interest in what was happening in my life once in a while.”
He moved away from the window and began to pace.
“Don’t misunderstand me,” he continued. “I don’t begrudge your happiness but I guess I’m envious… you have the perfect family… You all seem to get on so well…”
“Beth and I have never really been on the same wavelength…” David said. “She was always kinda serious, staying in every evening to study while I was out training, on the sports field… or partying… I think she resented all the attention I got when she was the smart one… We’ve never really kept in touch since leaving home…”
“Okay, so she wasn’t your best friend when you were at college and you don’t have anything in common now but I bet she doesn’t insult you… and both your mom and dad love you so much… I feel kinda left out… Watching you with your mother and hearing her talk about you just highlights what I’ve been missing… Fuck! I shouldn’t be feeling like this. You must be thinking what a horrible person I am…”
“No, Baby, of course not,” David said, pulling James back into his arms again, “but she meant what she said. You’re part of our family now. I’m sure they’ll come to love you too… if you’ll let them…”
“I don’t see how I can ever measure up…”
“You don’t have to. Just be yourself, Baby,” David said, placing a gentle kiss on James’ lips. “Mom already thinks of you as another son…”
“Surely not?”
“She said as much…”
“She did?”
“And I’m not supposed to tell you this but she has presents for all of us…you as well.”
“Oh, givegive each other presents on Thanksgiving?” James asked, his expression one of sheer panic.
“No, just Mom,” David said. “She loves buying us all presents and uses the holiday as an excuse… but don’t worry, Baby. She doesn’t expect anyone to give her anything in exchange although I know Dad has something for her this year…”
“I should have got her something at the airport…”
“We’ll bring her a special present at Christmas…”
James opened his mouth as if to speak but then closed it again.
“You will spend Christmas here with me, won’t you?” David asked, suddenly fearful James might be planning to visit his mother again.
“If you’re sure you want me to…”
“Of course I do, Baby,” David said. “Haven’t you been listening to me. I want to spend the rest of my life with you… holidays included.”
“You do?”
