Rosie paced around the perimeter of the building, around and around, keeping a safe distance between her and the humans.
She wasn’t happy about Mike’s increasing difficulties; it was getting to her - especially since he had never been this bad before. Ever since the star died Mike had been going... Well - mad.
Perhaps there was a connection between the death of the star and Mike’s behavior?
But what was it? And why?
Mike seemed to be getting more and more unpredictable - he argued to himself more and more - often he would start shouting as though arguing with someone not there.
That worried her.
Rosie halted abruptly, standing utterly motionless.
She could sense a presence that didn’t belong... It was intimidating and menacing all at once... And it was close.
Silently, her telepathic waves probed the area, flitting around nightclub party goers and reaching further out into the night, searching for the dangerous beings.
Telepathy wasn’t entirely useful, it certainly wasn’t the godlike power human’s portrayed it to be.
There were limitations, difficulties and such obstacles that could not be addressed - not knowing the enemy was one such limitation.
Human women, the more intuitive of the species could be linked to even as complete strangers - whereas men took much more time.
Rosie could only touch the minds of those who were close to her, and Linkin Park, their partners and some of their connections were the only one’s Rosie had spent enough time with to connect to.
Thoughts could not be ‘read’, not in a literal sense. A connection had to be made first, then the person would have to ‘think’ directly for the thought to be ‘read’.
Rosie monitored the emotions of any person by their body’s reactions, using telepathy like internal eyes, space eyes that could see far, see much - but actual thoughts were difficult, eyes could not read these complexities so simply.
Mike became telepathically mute when he was upset, and that annoyed Rosie all the more because she could only guess what was wrong with him.
The limitations of telepathy were many - and those limitations now, were worrying Rosie even more - as the enemy was not female - and was a stranger.
A small wine escaped Rosie’s lips, her waves probed, explored, seeing all the areas around the nightclub building and the street where her external eyes couldn’t, but the enemy’s intentions were inaccessible.
He was calm and afraid at the same time, he was not far away, but he was far away enough to feel safe.
From what?
His hands held something, long, made of metal and wood. He was aiming it in the rough direction of the nightclub.
The long object was dangerous - a gun - yes, that was what it was - but what was the target?
Once again, telepathy became useless.
Rosie returned her sight to her external eyes, which were capable of nocturnal sight.
She scanned the space around her.
She was in an alleyway lined with boxes and rubbish bins, there was an alley cat sitting on the lid of one bin, curiously watching her.
It was of no threat.
The street ahead led to the front of the building. Cars were parked in every available parking space.
She looked behind her, and saw nothing there either - there was only a car park.
Nothing threatening in there at all.
Rosie blinked, and blinked again, staring at the car park which seemed to be moving.
The world was fuzzy... It appeared to tilt and rotate, first to the right, then to the left.
What was wrong?
She was bombarded then with Mike’s own confusion, which encouraged her to turn and take a step forwards, intending to return to Mike’s side.
The alien wobbled unsteadily, confused by her eyesight’s which were both acting up, everything seemed unsteady - it all seemed to spin.
The sound of something whizzing through the air - a ‘flitting’ kind of noise - suddenly Rosie felt a sharp pain in her shoulder - she squealed ultrasonically, and a bat came whizzing out of the sky, colliding with Rosie’s head and flying back drunkenly, catching Rosie’s waves.
The bat flapped off feeling dazed.
What on earth was that creature?
Rosie staggered forwards, tottering on her uneven limbs tipsily.
Another sharp pain pierced her neck - and another - to her side.
“Help...” Rosie spoke out, but her speech was distorted, confused English mixed with a vast number of alien tongues.
She teetered forwards - and collapsed hard into the ground, instantly falling asleep.
