Chapter 40 :Thanksgiving with the families. AND I do mean families!
The Next few Months went by with out a hitch. Jess, Sara and Amy had thrown me an impromptu baby shower back stage last time they were all in St. Louis. Glenn and I got almost everything we needed, including a baby travel kit from Vince and Linda, who urged us both to come back as soon as we could. Fans had been sending letters and cards wishing us luck with the baby but wanting to know when we were coming back.
Glenn and I finally agreed on what to put up in the baby’s room. I think we bought every baby store in town out of Suzy’s Zoo stuff. Everything from the crib to the curtains and walls was covered. He and his dad finally finished the trim on the walls, getting the same color as the roses we had bought them when we found out.
This brought us up to Thanksgiving. Other than me gaining massive belly, nothing happened until then.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Glenn and I decided last year that we would have Thanksgiving for everyone at our house. That was before my due date was right after Thanksgiving. I didn’t want to back out on everyone and decided to do Thanksgiving anyway. No problem.
If ya havent figured it out. I was nine months along at the end of November, incredibly huge, nesting and full of active energy. I was also dialated to 3 and effacing and… Aw forget it. I was CLOSE to giving birth to this baby. The last four months had gone smoothly, leaving me at the end of my pregnancy, ready and eager to get Kitty out. This girl needed to be born!
Glenn and I had been calling her Kitty since the day we found out she was a girl. It was better than calling her the bump or it. She was really responsive to her father’s voice, moving around more when he talked to her. She was already daddy’s little angel, daddy’s little girl and many other little monikers. I told he he could not call her princess, the images of her acting like Stephanie McMahon much more than I could bear.
Anyway. It ws Thanksgiving and everyone was at my house, where they were cooking dinner. Everyone includes Glenn, me, Mark, Sara, Gunter, Kevin, Marcus, Jeff, Jess and their kids, Matt, Amy and the twins, Dad, David, Catherine, Shane Helms, Nora Greenwald, Shannon Moore, Curtis and Jack, and our neighbor Chloe. Chloe was a new addition to the group, having just hit it off with Shannon a few months before when he came over to help Glenn with a fish tank. She was a nurse in the mother-baby unit and proved invaluable during the last parts of my pregnancy.
We were eating dinner when the first one hit. It was barely anything but it hurt a bit. I dismissed it, calling it another Braxton-Hicks contraction. I got through dinner without another one, forgetting about it by the time the guys were off to watch the game.
All the women were in the kitchen, talking away about kids, babies and our men. We sent to kids off to play Glenn’s play station, maybe more Gunter and Kevin, to play and the others followed. I kept feeling like I was going to have an accident, which was a pretty common feeling then. I got up and excused myself, blaming pregnancy. I looked out the window as I headed for the bathroom, knowing it was freezing cold. I really was glad at that moment I was in a nice warm house.
As soon as I got to relieve myself I knew it wasn’t an accident. Chloe had told me about aminotic fluid having a sweet smell and I caught the strong scent in the air. I had one very painful contraction, squeezing my eyes shut against it. It was time. Kitty wanted out.
I cleaned myself up and headed upstairs, getting the final things I wanted packed in my bag. I threw my night gown in along with my brush and other essentials. I grabbed the baby’s teddy bear and threw it in. I took the whole bundle downstairs along with Glenn’s coat and mine.
Chloe met me halfway upstairs asking why I had my bag in my hands and Glenn’s coat. I told her to be quiet as I walked down the stairs and put everything down by the door. I stopped for a minute, feeling another contraction and looking at the clock. I was about seven minutes apart already. Chloe walked over and confrimed I was in labor.
“Yeah. Don’t tell yet. I want to surprise him.”
She nodded, quickly telling that if I was in such a decent mood that the baby and I were fine. I grabbed Glenn’s truck keys and walked into the room where the guys were watching football on Glenn’s big screen TV. I leaned over and looked at Glenn, knowing this would be highly amusing. The game was tied with eight seconds in the fourth quarter. Oh he’s gonna trip over this!
“Glenn. Go warm the truck up.” I leaned over the couch a bit and dangled the keys in front of him. He moved my hand away saying something about waiting til the end of the game.
“Jacobs. You really need to go warm the truck up now.”
“Faith, it’s the last five seconds! Whatever we need at the store can wait.” He went back to watching, seeing the kicker score a goal or something. He was rather excited about it.
“Ok fine. Jack, you warm up the truck.”
I threw Curtis’s lover the keys and walked out of the room and headed for the kitchen.
“Lovey, Why am I warming up your big man’s truck?”
“Because my husband is too damned concerned with a football game to take his own wife to give birth to his daughter.”
Glenn’s head shot up and he turned around on the couch, staring at me like I had grown another head. He pushed Mark over as he turned, making Mark just kinda growl at him.
“Youre in labor? Why the hell didn’t you tell me?”
I tried to look aloof when I spoke. “Football seemed more important.”
He looked over and said “Fuck Football. Jack, keys.” Jack threw them at him and Glenn jumped over the couch and out the door. I thought it was hilarious until I had another contraction. Still seven minutes.
Catherine came out of the the kitchen, carrying Jeremy and asking what was going on as I put my coat on.
“Glenn and I are leaving. It’s time.”
She practicaly started crying as she gave me a hug. “Does he have his phone so he can call us or quarters?”
I nodded. “Yeah. We planned ahead. He’s just gotta warm the truck up. The hospital should have everything ready, we’ll just need a room.”
I heard Glenn come in and grab my bag. He was talking to Curtis and Chloe and the three of them met me at the kitchen door.
“Something tells me to bring these two. They agreed to come. Ready?” I nodded saying goodbye to Catherine. As we left David and my dad met us at the front door.
“Glenn you bring that baby girl home safe in a few days. If you two need anything you let us know.” Glenn nodded to his Dad as mine kissed me on the cheek.
“Good luck girlie. Make your mama proud.”
With that we left, the four of us piling into the Durango. It was all I could do to keep Glenn from speeding to the hospital.
Good Lord, we had enough time and the hospital is five miutes away. The man is a maniac.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
An hour later, Glenn and I were in the birthing room, Chloe and Curtis off to find caffiene. I had my IV in my hand and Glenn kept telling me to leave it alone.
“It itches.”
He tapped me on the shoulder again, telling me not to touch it. “If you don’t, you’re not getting the meds you wanted. Stop.”
I pouted, looking at the saline bag and down to my hand. The nurse was going to add something to the IV, to dull the pain in my back, where most of my labor was happening. Back labor sucks. Before she could do anything, they had to find Lori. Unfortunatley, they couldn’t find her. It was the holiday and she wasn’t on call. They assured me they would find her though. Eventually.
Yeah, good luck. She’s not going to make it here in time anyway.
By now I was three minutes apart and dialated to eight. Curtis and the duty nurse both said I was going to go relatively fast, and that I’d be grateful for it.
I’d be grateful to get this thing out of my hand.
Glenn had to keep talking to me, knowing I was getting tired and agitated. He was watching the monitor, waiting for my next contraction. They told me I could go walk around, and would have if I didn’t feel like I had a boulder between my legs. Even though I’m a patient person, the waiting and the pain were driving me crazy.
I was having another contraction when Curtis, Chloe and an older nurse came in. Glenn’s hand was being squeezed like a vice in mine as I bowed my head to the pain. Chloe sat next to me to help me breathe, Curtis just watching to see if he was needed. He asked the nurse what she was giving me, watching her prep the vial.
“The on-call said morphine.”
I shot up and screamed at her. “Does anyone around here read a chart?” Glenn put a hand on my shoulder, seeing mine and Kitty’s heartbeat going up. Chloe asked me what was wrong as the nurse backed off.
“I want to see the on-call now. And where the hell is Lori?”
The nurse skittered out of the room, saying she’d get the duty nurse and the on-call. Chloe and Curtis just looked at me stunned as I turned my head to Glenn. I whispered to him and he nodded as I laid my head back. He stood up, stretched and said he would be right back. He looked to Curtis and asked him to stay with me.
“Don’t let them give her morphine. She’s allergic.”
He left, letting Chloe and Curtis to stay with me. After a few minutes, a doctor came in, holding my clipboard and looking very sheepish. He was a little balding man, maybe fortyish with a sour look on his face.
“Ms. Jacobs…”
“That’s Missus Jacobs.”
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Jacobs. I got your chart swicthed with another patient’s. Unfortunately, as far along in to labor as you are, anything we give you now probably won’t start working until after you give birth.” He went to check how far along I was now and found a foot on his nose.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Dr. Weaver, I’ll be delivering your baby…”
I shook my head. “No, you wont. Where is Lori?”
“Dr. Moreno is in Chicago. Her flight has been delayed due to a a snow storm. She has asked that I take over for her…”
I shook my head, looked dead at him as a contraction eased. “I’m sorry, I’m going to veto her descision.”
“Mrs. Jacobs I am the only doctor available right now and…”
“Wrong.” Curtis finally spoke up, standing at his full 6’ 7’’ height, towering over the shorter doctor.
“Wrong? What do you mean?” the on-call looked up, stunned. “We have no one else available, three emergency C-sections and…”
“And she’s my cousin and I’ll deliver her. I did a Obstetrics rotation in Medical school. I even have a nurse I can use that works for your hospital. Just show me where to scrub up and get to two of us gowns.” He looked to Chloe, who nodded back, scowling at the doctor in front of us.
“This is insane! You need a certified qualified doctor to help you give birth!”
“That’s why I have a Curtis! As far as I’m concerned youre fired. If I have to sign a release I’ll do it. My husband will do the same. I trust Curtis over you. So buzz off!”
He said fine, he’d get a release and walked out. Glenn walked in as he left, asking what was going on.
“Lori’s stuck in Chicago. Curtis and Chloe are going to help me. Your hunch was right.”
He looked to his cousin and our neighbor, smiling. “I knew something would happen. How much longer.”
Curtis shook his head. “Let me get scrubbed up and I’ll check. Chloe, would you show me where I can prep?”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
If this is disjointed, its because I was in major pain and had to try hard and remember.
They came back an hour leter, both of them ready to get this done with. Chloe gave Glenn a hospital gown and one of those hats. He got a kick out of it. Curtis found I was fully dialated, and less than a minute apart. I was going faster than he thought. He told Glenn to stand next to me and help hold me up. He had another nurse bring in a birthing bar, Chloe looking at my chart and seeing that Glenn and I had to decided to have me give birth squatting.
Apparently I was pretty loud, screaming at Glenn that he was never getting any, ever again in his life. I called him every name in the book, from evil bastard to fucking moron. Curtis let me keep yelling at Glenn, saying if it kept my mind off the pain, to let me yell at my husband.
I finally started to get the urge to push when I told Glenn he would be getting used to a life of celebacy. I leaned forward onto the bar, telling Curtis to help. Glenn had his hand on my back, along with Chloe on the other side, both coaching me through the pain. I felt like I was being ripped apart, knowing from Curtis that the baby wasn’t even crowning yet, but I could relax.
“Now again Faith, against the contraction. Push.”
I screamed, raising my head to the ceiling and bellowing as loud as Glenn did when he was in the ring. I heard Glenn tell me the baby was crowning but it didn’t register. I heard Curtis tell me to keep going.
“I can’t do this!”
Chloe grabbed my hand and said I could. “After everything you have been through for and with Glenn. You can do this. It’ll be over in a minute. Now PUSH!”
I grabbed Glenn’s hand, and squeezed until he screamed right along with me. I heard Curtis say to keep going, that she was almost out. I felt completely relieved as she was born, Chloe taking her and handing her to me as I lay back down. I looked at her as she lay there, disoriented and puffy, she was almost purple but alert when Glenn cut the cord then went with Chloe to get her cleaned up. Curtis worked on me, making sure all of the placenta was there and I didn’t have many tears. He cleared me at that point, letting me rest as Glenn brought Kitty over.
“Here, Mama. She’s perfect. I don’t know where she got all of it, she does have my nose though.” He handed her to me, I took a look at her and that part I remember plainly. She had that silver nitrate stuff over her eyes and wrapped up in a hospital blanket. I leaned up and took off her hat, seeing a lot of black, still damp curls. Her eyes were closed, she was wimpering, and wiggling her fingers. She did have Glenn’s nose, a little bit narrower but still the same. I thought she looked a lot like our moms, which was fittting after what we named her.
I let her go with Chloe to get all of her tests done. Curtis went with her to put in the paperwork. Glenn stayed with me, letting me rest until they brought Kitty back. He called the house and got Mark. He told him to put the phone on speaker so he could tell everyone what happened.
“Ok….Mom….Dad….Gilbert. You have a beautiful grandaughter, Catherine Ruby. Yes, Dad she’s healthy and has the right amount of toes….” He laughed at something they said. “Guy’s let me finish!” He pulled the phone away from his ear as a nurse came in to help me clean up. “She’s fine Mom. Faith, did great. Mama and Baby are fine. Don’t worry.” He smiled at me and took my hand as the nurse cleaned me up and gave Glenn and I another armband so we could go into the nursery. “No Jess, she’s going to room-in with her. She wants to. Anyway. No Mark, we’ll probably come home Sunday, mattering on how Faith feels. Ok. She was born at 9:37, eight pounds seven ounces. She’s twenty inches long. You’ll have to see her when you come visit guys, she’s gorgeous. She’s got Mom’s black hair and curls.” He kept talking while I got a shower, exahusted but running on adrenaline. I would rest tonight, but I knew people would be there the next morning.
