Kelly kept her eyes on her tray as they all sat around their normal table in the school cafeteria for lunch.
"So..." Lyndsey struggled to make conversation. "Carrie, you're gonna try again on the whole district game thing, this week?"
"Yea," she forced a laugh.
"That's good. Hopefully they won't get ten run ruled, this time."
"She's a softball player, not a miracle worker," Mary joked.
"So, you're going to the game, Kelly?" Ashley asked from her spot beside Lyndsey.
"I can't. Lyndsey has the same shift as me tomorrow, and no one else wants to trade for the night shift," Kelly replied without looking up.
"Speaking of," Lyndsey cut in. "Do you need a ride home tonight again?"
"Um," Kelly turned to Carrie who shook her head. "No, Care can bring me."
"Your parents let you out after dark now? Nice."
"Actually, she's gonna be staying at my house for a few days."
"See, I always wanted to do the middle of the week slumber party thing," Mary commented. "But my mom rejects the idea every time."
"That's cause your mom has the early shift at the hospital and has to be up at four in the morning," Lyndsey reminded. "I doubt she wants us keeping her up until two."
Carrie turned to Kelly.
"Mary's mom's a nurse," Kelly explained.
"Wow, neat trick," Ashley frowned.
Kelly finally looked to her.
"Reading her mind like that," Ashley shrugged. "Must come in handy since she doesn't seem to talk or have any thoughts of her own."
Kelly knew without looking that Carrie's face was bright red.
"Ashley," Mary scolded.
"It's fine," Carrie said softly, standing. "I'm gonna go."
Kelly groaned agitatedly as Carrie walked away, "Nice Ash. Real nice. Must you always be so mean?"
"Must you always take up for her? I swear she's like one of those stray dogs that you always pick up, except this time your mom didn't make you give her back," Ashley replied coldly.
"She's shy; she can't help that. But you being a bitch? You can help that...you just choose not to," Kelly stood.
"KC, come on," Lyndsey urged.
"I'm sorry. I gotta go check on Care," she shook her head, walking to go dump her tray.

"Gotta hand it to her," Carrie nodded as Kelly sat next to her on the bench in the dugout. "She really knows just what to say."
"Ignore her. She was just sulking."
"Kell..."
"No, I'm so over this crush thing. I don't even care if the girl's in love with me--I'm not dealing with her drama. As we discussed, I have enough drama in my life without her."
Carrie nudged her shoulder gently.
"You're ok?" Kelly turned her head to look at her.
"Yea, just a little embarrassed I took off like that."
"Don't worry about it. Can't blame you for not wanting to sit through that. I swear that was the most awkward lunch ever."
"I don't know...you should've been at the lunch the day my mom found out about my dad's affair."
"Yea, I imagine that was probably worse," Kelly agreed, leaning her head on the other blonde's shoulder.
"I know I should be mad at him. It's his fault our family is ruined," Carrie watched as Kelly held one of her hands in both her own. "But I can't help but feel sorry for him. He's stuck being married to someone that he isn't in love with. Can you imagine how lonely he must've been?"
"It must've really sucked."
"He's probably lonely again now."
"He's not completely alone, Care. Your dad has you, and trust me, he loves you so much. I've seen it."
Carrie smiled softly, "Do you ever think that maybe your dad was just lonely?"
"My dad was selfish," Kelly said firmly. "Don't try to make it out like he's the victim because he's not."
"Kell--"
"He's not."
"I'm sorry," she whispered, bringing their hands up to her lips, kissing the Texan's fingers softly.
Kelly sighed deeply, "God, I hate him."
"You shouldn't hate him."
"Why not? I think I have good reason to hate him."
"Maybe so, but it isn't healthy for you to carry that around with you. You need to let go of it...it's time."
Kelly turned her face, burying it in the taller girl's shoulder.
Carrie brought her free hand up, running it through Kelly's hair.

"Hey," Jessica looked up from where she was restocking the candy counter.
"Hi," Carrie nodded. "Is Kelly ready yet?"
"She should be done soon."
"Ok," she turned to walk away.
"She seems tired," Jessica commented, causing her to turn back.
"What else is new, right?"
"She has a lot going on?"
"She started the new waitressing job today before she came here."
"You have to drive her around a lot, huh?"
"I don't mind," she shrugged. "Not like I have anything else to do."
"So, I heard y'all actually won a game yesterday."
"Yea, lucky for us the other team sucked worse than we did."
Jessica nodded.
Carrie turned again to walk away.
"I heard you're living with her," Jessica said, stopping her once more. "Ashley told me that."
"I think this is something you should be discussing with Kelly."
"She's not talking to me," she frowned.
Carrie sighed, "I'm not living with her. I'm just staying there for the time being while I sort out some stuff with my parents."
"Ashley's pretty upset."
"It's not my job to make her happy."
"Kelly's her best friend. Don't you think you should get her to talk to her?"
"No," Carrie shook her head. "I'm not getting in the middle of it, plus I think Kelly's allowed to be upset with her right now. Ashley's been down right rude and mean to her lately."
"She has a reason--"
"Liking someone is no excuse to be a bitch."
Jessica raised an eyebrow, "You know, you were really shy and sweet when I first met you."
"Sorry, but I have a lot going on," Carrie frowned. "And so does Kelly, for that matter, so I don't see the need for her to have to be dealing with all this drama."
"Are you still kissing her?"
"Yes."
"I really don't think that's a good idea."
Carrie groaned, rubbing her eyes tiredly.
"Can you imagine how much it would hurt Ashley if she found out?"
Carrie rolled her eyes, "I honestly don't give a damn, and why should I? She's not my friend. She's been nothing but harsh with me the past few months. The only reason I put up with it for this long is because she's Kelly's best friend, and seeing as they're on the outs right now, I don't see the need for false pretenses anymore."
"Hey," they both looked up to see the short Texan walking to them.
Kelly studied them carefully before turning to Carrie, "You're ok?"
Carrie nodded, holding an arm out.
Kelly stepped to her, hugging her tightly.
"Your hugs still amaze me," Carrie smiled as she pulled back.
Kelly giggled softly, linking their arms together.
"Bye Kelly," Jessica frowned.
"Bye," she gave a short wave.
++++++++
"So why were you upset earlier?" Kelly asked curiously as they lay side by side on their backs in her bed.
"When was I upset?" Carrie questioned, moving her arm out the way, allowing the Texan to rest her head on her shoulder.
"When you came pick me up from work. You seemed like you were upset. Was Jebbie giving you a hard time?"
Carrie sighed, "Not really, I just...do you think it's wrong that I don't like Ashley? I mean, does that bother you?"
"You don't like her?"
"Baby, she and I never really got off to a great start."
"Yea, I guess not."
"Is that ok, though?"
"Of course it's ok. I think we've been through this before: I'm not gonna tell you who to like or who to hang out with. Is that what you and Jebbie were talking about?"
"Yea, she was telling me that I should be trying to fix things between the two of you."
"That's not your place."
"That's what I said," Carrie nodded, pulling her a little closer. "And she also brought up the whole kissing thing, again."
"She still thinks we should stop?"
"Yea."
"I just don't see what the big deal is," Kelly replied, pushing herself up so she was looking down at her. "So what if I kiss you? Where's the harm in that?"
Carrie smiled, smoothing her hand over the shorter girl's arm that she was using to support herself.
"I think Jebbie's trying too hard to make everyone happy. Life just doesn't workout that way, though."
"Yea, that's another reason why she doesn't like me kissing you."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, she asked if I realized how hurt Ashley would be if she found out."
"What does that have to do with anything? So, because Ashley likes me, I'm not allowed to kiss anyone? What about if I get asked out on a date by someone? I'm not allowed to go because it'll hurt her feelings? I'm gonna end up being some old lady with like a hundred cats or something."
Carrie laughed softly.
"Do you think I'm being too harsh?"
"I think you have a lot of frustration built up because in reality, you're the one trying to make everybody happy all the time. Not so much a people pleaser, more of a really good friend, but like you said not everybody is gonna be happy all the time. That's just life."
"It sucks being nice."
Carrie smiled, rolling her eyes as she tugged her down, "Come here."
Kelly folded into her as Carrie wrapped her arms around her.
"Now, it doesn't always suck being nice."
"Says who?"
"Says if I weren't nice then who would've taught you to kiss?"
"Yea, but that's beneficial for me. How is it beneficial for you?"
"Well...you're kinda a good kisser."
Kelly grinned, looking up at her, "Kinda?"
"Well, I don't want you getting some huge ego."
"Oh whatever," she laughed.
Carrie smiled, giving the slightest nod as Kelly pushed herself up a little to be able to kiss her lightly.
"Thank you for being nice," Kelly smiled softly.
Carrie reached down, returning the kiss, "Thank you for making it easy."

Kelly smiled as she handed the people at the table their drinks before turning around to her new table that had just been seated. Her smile faltered slightly, "Hi."
"Hi," Stephen nodded. "Carrie had mentioned that you would be working here. I was hoping to catch you."
"Mr. Underwood, look..." her voice trailed off at the sadness in his eyes. "I'm cut in twenty minutes. We can talk then?"
"Ok," he nodded again.
Kelly took a deep breath as she turned, walking away. She thought about how Carrie mentioned that she was worried about him being lonely again, and how she had assured the Oklahoma native that he wasn't lonely because he had her. There was just one problem with that theory...he didn't have his daughter at the moment.
