Kate sat, fully dressed and ready for the day, on the edge of the bed with her feet kicking back and forth. Her hands were clasped together on her lap as her glance travelled back and forth from the door to the clock beside the bed as she waited for Kelly to wake up and come meet her. She quickly stood at the knock on the door.
"Good morning," Jeanne smiled, opening the door.
"Hi, um, good morning to you too," Kate replied, feeling the nerves growing in her stomach.
"Expecting someone else?" Jeanne asked curiously.
"I just...I was waiting for Kelly to wake up."
"Kelly? Wake up before noon? Since when?"
Kate laughed softly, "Yea, I guess you're right."
"Come on, come with me," Jeanne motioned for her. "I'll fix you something to eat for breakfast."
"No, you don't have to do that, really. I can fend for myself."
"Nonsense, you are my guest in this house, you will not fend for yourself," Jeanne replied. "Now come along. You can tell me all about yourself while waiting."
"Yes ma'am," Kate nodded, following her to the kitchen.
++++++++++++
"So I didn't start taking music seriously until I was older," Kate shrugged. "I mean, I've always loved music, and I was always singing when I was little, but I don't know...as far as something I could do for a living? It just didn't really cross my mind, you know?"
"Sometimes, it takes people a little while longer to realize what they are meant to do in life," Jeanne nodded, placing a plate of eggs and bacon before her to add to the plate of biscuits.
"Yea, but in a way it sucks because I just started playing guitar and piano a couple years ago, so I'm way behind compared to like Jill who's practically been playing her entire life."
"It's never too late to learn something new," Jeanne replied, pouring a glass of orange juice. "What matters is that you're playing them now, and that you love it."
Kate smiled.
"Do you love it?"
"Playing instruments? Yea, I mean, the feeling I get when I learn a new song...it's so great."
"I meant all of it."
Kate nodded, "Yes, I do. Nothing makes me happier than music and performing it."
"Then that's all that matters," Jeanne smiled, patting her hand as she joined her at the table.
"What about Kelly? Was she always so...driven?"
"Very much so," Jeanne chuckled. "No matter what it was, if she wanted something, she would do everything in her power to get it and then some. She wanted to live on her own in Texas right after high school, so she worked four and five jobs at a time to make ends meet and be able to pay her rent and electricity bills and for food. She wanted to go to L.A., so she moved out there with this girl she hardly knew and lived in this tiny bedroom in a rundown house for months with several other people she had never met. Even when she was little, she was like that. I remember this one time--I believe she was in the first grade--she decided she wanted to win her class spelling bee. Now, this was the day before the spelling bee that she decided this, mind you..."
Kate giggled.
"So she studied all day that day, and all night that night, didn't sleep at all. I practically had to carry her into her class, she was so tired."
"Did she win?"
"No, unfortunately she fell asleep in the third round and missed her turn."
"Yea," Kate laughed. "That sounds like her."
"People are always telling me that her voice is surely a blessing from God," Jeanne smiled. "But I think her drive is an even greater gift."
"There are a lot of people out there that can sing," Kate agreed. "But I've never met anyone that works as hard or is even willing to work as hard as she does."
"Now, y'all wouldn't be talking about me by any chance?" Kelly grinned as she walked into the kitchen.
"Nah, we're talking about Britney Spears," Kate smiled. "That girl is just so damn talented."
Jeanne cleared her throat.
Kate's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"It's rude to curse at the table, Katherine," Kelly explained. "Didn't your mother teach you any manners?"
"Ok, ew, don't call me Katherine," Kate made a face.
"Katherine's a lovely name," Jeanne commented.
Kate narrowed her eyes at Kelly as the short Texan slid into the seat next to her.
"Slept good?" Kelly smiled, leaning in to kiss her softly. "Sorry," she apologized at her blush.
"It's ok," Kate replied, taking a nervous breath before kissing her on the cheek in reply. "And I slept great. By the way," she turned to Jeanne, "I meant to tell you this yesterday, but this house is really nice."
"Why thank you, dear," Jeanne smiled broadly. "I designed nearly all of the interior myself."
"Well, you did an amazing job."
Kelly giggled at her mother's growing smile. "Told you so," she whispered as she started to fill her empty plate with food.
+++++++++++++
"So really, you offered to do the dishes just so you could get me alone," Kate smiled as she stood with her back against the sink, Kelly's arms on either side of her, keeping her there.
"I just wanted so say good morning," Kelly shrugged innocently.
"Mmhmm..."
Kelly grinned as Kate's arms wrapped around her waist.
"So how'd you sleep?"
"Like I used to."
Kate raised an eyebrow.
"Like crap," Kelly replied simply. "I woke up, and without you there for me to not want to wake up, I got all antsy."
"How many songs did you write?" Kate asked, knowingly.
"Two, and I won five games of solitaire, and two games of online scrabble."
"Well, that sounds like a productive night to me," she teased.
Kelly giggled as she reached up on her toes and kissed her. She could feel Kate's arms tightening around her, and she smiled into the kiss, bringing a hand up to stroke along her jawline before pulling back, "Good morning."
"Good morning," Kate smiled, pressing her lips against her forehead as she hugged her tightly.

"You're scared of my momma," Kelly teased as she and Kate swung on the swing in her mother's backyard.
"Maybe..."
"There's nothing to be afraid of," Kelly assured, sliding their hands together. "I swear, I was just joking when she said she had run off some people. Plus, she seems to really like you."
"I just...I don't know where to start. I mean, I don't know what to ask," Kate shook her head, her eyes nervous.
"Hey," Kelly soothed, running her free hand over the back of Kate's hand that she was holding. "It's ok. It's not like my mom's gonna be judging you or anything. Feel free to ask whatever you need."
"Maybe this was a stupid idea."
"No, it's not. It was smart. You're afraid of what will happen with your family. Who better to ask than a person who's been through it on their side of things."
"I don't think afraid's the right word," Kate noted.
"No?" Kelly watched her closely, smiling at the way the sun was shining through her hair, turning it golden.
"I just...I need to know. I wanna be prepared."
Kelly's head cocked to the side curiously.
"Kelly..." Kate turned to face her. "I-I know you want me to wait, but time isn't going to change anything. I like you... a lot. And I wanna do this for real."
Kelly's brow furrowed, and she looked at her regretfully.
"What? What's wrong?"
"I can't," Kelly replied softly as she shook her head.
"You can't?" Kate gave her a confused look.
"Not yet. You don't know the full story. Just wait...please?"
"What am I waiting for?" Kate asked, leaning closer to her. "Kell, I want this. Trust me, I've thought about it--it's all I can think about--and I know I want this."
Kelly accepted a gentle kiss before pulling back, "You need to talk to my mom."
"I will," Kate assured. "But that's not going to change how I feel about you, I promise."
"Kate, please, can you just do this one thing for me?"
"Ok," Kate nodded. "I'll talk to your mom. And after I do that, will you finally believe that I'm ready?"
"I just don't want you to get hurt because of me," Kelly explained. "You need to know what you're heading into."
"There you go thinking I can't take care of myself, again," Kate smiled. "Don't you think I should get a say in this?"
"You will," Kelly smiled back. "After you know all the facts, and realize that it's not all pink kisses."
"Pink kisses?"
"Well, I know you love pink, and I know you love kissing me, so..."
"Oh, so I love kissing you now, huh?"
"Absolutely. In fact, I'd say you were just about addicted to it."
"Addicted?" Kate giggled. "Well...yea, that sounds about right..."
Kelly grinned, wrapping an arm around her and pulling her closer. She kissed her cheek softly, "Thanks for being patient."
"For me being patient? How long did you wait for me?" Kate raised an eyebrow. "I'll gladly do whatever you need me to do to let you know I'm serious about this."
"Well, right now I think I need you to lay with me on this swing," Kelly replied as she laid back, pulling Kate with her.
Kate giggled again, nuzzling into Kelly's neck.
"I missed this last night," she breathed in contently.
"Me too," Kate kissed her neck as she wrapped her arms around her.

Kelly yawned as she pulled the rental care into her mother’s driveway. She had been too antsy to just sit there and wait while Kate talked to her mother, so she had grabbed the list of groceries off the refrigerator and went shopping for her mom. She hoped that they would be done by the time she got back because she wasn’t sure how much knotting and turning her stomach could take. She grabbed the bag of groceries from the passenger side before climbing out of the car, closing the door with her hip.
She made her way inside the house, rushing to the kitchen to place the bags down before she dropped the one that she was hanging onto by her pinky. She let out a sigh of relief as she made it to the counter without dropping a single bag and started to save everything up. A pair of soft hands on her hips caused her to jump in surprise, and she turned around to find Kate standing before her with a soft smile.
“I was wondering where you went,” Kate admitted, chewing on her lip nervously, yet her hands remained on the shorter girl’s hips, and she took a step towards her.
“I’m not very good at just sitting by myself and waiting,” Kelly replied. “So I went pick up some stuff my mom needed.”
“I missed you.”
“I wasn’t gone that long,” Kelly’s eyebrows scrunched in confusion.
“No, I…” Kate sighed. “I was trying to be romantic.”
Kelly smiled, “Oh yea?”
“Yea.”
“You kinda sucked at it.”
“Kell…” she fussed.
Kelly grinned, tugging her closer.
“Unh-uh,” Kate shook her head. “I know that look. You don’t get to go and be all seductive right after being mean to me.”
“You think I’m seductive?”
Kate blushed, “Shut up.”
“You think I’m seductive,” Kelly’s grin grew as she wrapped her arms around the taller girl’s waist.
“You’re mean.”
“Yea…seductively mean,” she wiggled her eyebrows.
Kate giggled as Kelly reached up on her toes, “Are you gonna kiss me now?”
“Is that what you‘ve been trying for?”
She nodded, her eyes closing as Kelly leaned towards her, pressing their lips together gently, feeling herself smiling at the touch.
“Have I told you lately how much I like you?” Kelly asked, tucking a piece of hair behind the blonde’s ear.
“It’s been a couple of hours…”
Kelly laughed, pulling her to her in a warm hug. “So how’d the talk go with my mother?” she questioned as she stretched up to rest her chin on Kate’s shoulder as they slowly swayed together.
“It went really well.”
“It did?” she couldn’t keep the hint of surprise out of her voice.
“Yea, your mom is really great, Kell. She was willing to talk about anything I needed. It was just…it was nice and informative and…”
“And?”
Kate pulled back from the hug, “Kelly?”
“Yea?”
“Can you be my girlfriend now? Cause I really, really want you to be, and I just…I don’t see any reason to wait. I did what you asked--I talked to your mother. I’ve thought about it. I’ve done everything, and I want this. I know I do.”
Kelly frowned as she took a step back, finding her back pressed against the counter.
“Kelly?”
“What exactly did my mom tell you?”
“We just…we talked about you, and how it was for her from a parental point of view, finding out, and stuff like that,” Kate replied, confusedly.
“And you’re ok with it?”
“Kelly, I don’t…I don’t know what’s going on. Would you please just tell me, cause I don’t like this,” she shook her head, taking a step back.
“Kate, no, I’m sorry,” Kelly quickly stepped back to her. “I just…I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
“I know, and I’m ok with this. I know what I’m getting into, and I’m ok--”
“No, you don’t. You don’t know what you’re getting into, you’re--”
“Then why don’t you just tell me?” Kate crossed her arms.
“Kate, I’m sorry,” Kelly let out a deep breath, moving so that she was right in front of her. “I’m sorry,” she repeated gently as she took Kate’s arms and unfolded them, wrapping them around her back instead. She smiled at the small smile forming on the other girl’s face. “You’re right, I’ll tell you. I should’ve told you a long time ago. It isn’t fair to you that I’ve been keeping this from you.”
“Keeping what?” Kate asked, finding herself swaying once again with the Texan, almost as if they were dancing on the spot.
“My mom…did she say anything about my dad?”
Kate’s brow furrowed in thought, “No, but what does he have to do with anything? I thought y’all hadn’t talked in forever? You said your stepfather was the only dad you needed growing up.”
“That’s what I meant,” Kelly explained. “Did y’all talk about my stepfather?”
“You know…I don’t think we did. We talked about your mom, and Jason, and your sister, but no, not about your step dad. Why?”
Kelly’s hands slid up Kate’s arms, “My mom and my step dad are no longer together. They, um, well, their divorced was just finalized not too long ago.”
“Oh, Kelly…” Kate pulled her into a hug. “I’m so sorry, I wish you would’ve told me. I would’ve been there for you.”
Kelly shook her head as she buried her face in Kate’s shoulder, “I didn’t want to scare you away.”
“What do you mean?” Kate asked, her arms wrapped tightly around the brunette, keeping her close.
“My step dad…he’s the one that left my mom.”
“Ok?”
“And he left because of me.”
“Now, Kell, I know sometimes it may seem like that, but--”
“No,” Kelly pulled away, wiping the tears off her cheeks. “I’m not…I’m not some child that doesn’t understand. He left my mom because of me, because of who I am. You can ask Jason, you can ask my mom or my sister…you can even ask him if you’d like. I still have his number.”
“Kelly…” Kate reached out, stroking her cheek softly with her thumb.
“That’s what I was hoping my mom would tell you. I was hoping she would tell you so I wouldn’t have to, but that really wasn’t fair of me, because this has been so hard for her. When he found out…when I told him…he thought I was joking. Then, he thought it was some, some publicity stunt that Jeff had cooked up. When I finally convinced him it wasn’t, he couldn’t even look at me.”
Kate felt her heart breaking for the small singer before her.
“He refused to talk to me. He said it went against everything he had taught me, growing up. And…and he said anybody who went along with it, who continued to be apart of my life was supporting it which in his eyes was just as bad.”
“And your mother never waivered from your side.”
“Not for a second,” Kelly chewed on her bottom lip.
“I’m sorry,” Kate ran a hand through her hair before pulling her back to her. “I’m sorry, baby, I’m so, so sorry that you had to go through that.”
“I think what sucks the most is knowing that my mother never once blamed me for his leaving.”
“Because you blame nobody but yourself?”
Kelly nodded against her shoulder, clinging onto her t-shirt tightly.
Kate pressed her lips firmly against her temple, “It’s ok.”
“I’m sorry for not telling you sooner.”
“It’s not something that’s easy to talk about,” she replied, rubbing gentle circles onto her back.
“I was more afraid of losing you, really. I knew you’d get scared about what would happen with your own family when I told you, and I just wasn’t ready to lose you yet.”
“I am scared,” Kate admitted. “But I was scared before you told me. Relationships in general scare me. Then this…all of it is so new to me, you know? And you, you mean so much to me, and I’m afraid of losing you too.”
Kelly buried her face in Kate’s neck.
“But that’s just all a part of it. It comes with the package, right? If this were supposed to be easy, then it wouldn’t be worth it, you know? But Kelly, I’m not going into this without a clue. My best friend is gay. I was there with her when she came out to her family. Me talking to your mom was more of a way to reassure myself of what I already knew.”
“But my step dad--”
“Is an ass,” Kate cut her off. “And you know what? I’m sure he’s not going to be the last ass that we encounter, and I’m ok with that.”
“But what if…what if someone close to you does that?” Kelly asked, pulling back just enough to be able to look up at her.
“Kelly, I…you…the way you…how I feel…” Kate shook her head, laughing at her inability to find the right words. “It’s worth it. You’re worth it.”
“Nobody wants to lose their family.”
“I’m not saying that I do, I’m just saying that you mean so much to me, and you make me feel things, amazing things, that I’ve never felt with anyone else before, and if this is only the beginning, then I can’t even imagine what I’m going to feel for you weeks or months from now. I seriously can’t imagine it, but I want to find out. I want nothing more than to find out how incredible this is going to be.”
Kelly found herself tearing up again.
“So…I’m going to ask you this again, and you know what? I’m going to keep on asking it until you get your head out of your ass long enough to realize that I’m ready, ok?”
“Ok,” Kelly giggled softly.
“Can you be my girlfriend now? I mean…” she blushed. “Will you? Will you be my girlfriend? Cause I…I really like you, Kelly Brianne Clarkson, and it would mean the world to me if you said yes, so please don’t make me keep on asking--”
She was cut off as Kelly took her face in her hands and pulled her down into a warm kiss, “You’re so cute when you’re nervous.”
Kate felt herself blushing deeper.
“And you totally find me seductive,” Kelly grinned.
“Kell…”
“Yes?”
“Answer me.”
“Answer you about what?” she asked innocently.
“Are you gonna be my girlfriend or not?”
Kelly laughed, “Well yea, geeze…you don’t have to be so mean about it.”
Kate threw her arms in the air, groaning exasperatedly.
“Kate?”
“What?” she turned around, her hands on her hips.
Kelly quickly stepped to her, kissing her firmly, feeling the blonde sigh against her lips. “Yes,” she whispered, pulling away just enough to speak. “Yes, it would seriously rock my socks to be your girlfriend.”
Kate let out a slight squeal before pressing her lips back against Kelly’s, causing her to stumble backwards.
“Whoa there,” Kelly laughed, reaching out for the sink to steady herself.
“Sorry,” Kate could feel her ears burning. “I just get excited sometimes.”
“I know,” Kelly nodded, smiling as she reached out for her. “I can’t wait to see what else I can do that’ll make you squeal…”
“Oh god,” Kate’s cheeks turned crimson as she buried her face in Kelly’s neck.
