Life Goes On(Pt40)
Phil opened his eyes to the dim light. He blinked several times to clear his vision until his surroundings came into focus. The room he found himself in was not the same as before, but it looked vaguely familiar. He sat up, now realizing he had been lying on the soft bed. A large, black trunk sat in the corner with the words Def Leppard: Hysteria Tour spray-painted on the front. Clothes were strewn on the floor and a few vodka bottles lay on their sides...empty. He moved closer to the chest of drawers and looked at the pictures there. ‘That's us on tour for Hysteria.' Phil mused, looking at the picture of the five of them outside the plane.
His eyes were drawn to the picture beside it, it was of him and Steve, just outside of a building. Phil's eyes widen and he spun around to look at the room again. It was his room in the apartment that he and Steve had shared in London . Steve....all those memories from that happy time came rushing back. Phil ran to the door and threw it open, he bolted down the hall into the living room and stopped. He frantically looked around and didn't see him.
"Steve!" Phil yelled, darting his eyes everywhere. He knew what to expect when he came to the crossroads, but nothing could truly prepare him for this moment.
"You don't have to yell." Steve smiled, sitting up on the couch from where he had been lying down. "I've been waiting a long time for you."
"Steve...is it...is it..."
"Yes." He smiled. "Come sit by me."
Phil willed his legs to move to walk over to his long time friend. 'Almost forty years.' Phil thought, tears began to fall down his checks as he stood in front of him. Steve looked up at his friend, the smile never leaving his face. A strangled cry escaped Phil and he fell into Steve's arms...crying. Steve wrapped his arms around him, holding him tight until he pulled himself together.
"You don't have much time here, don't waste it getting my shirt all wet."
Phil sat up and wiped his face. "Sorry...it's so good to see you again. I...I can't believe you're here."
I'm always here," Steve held onto his hand. "You don't have to apologize."
"You said you have been waiting for me. How...how did you know I was coming?"
"I know everything." Steve started. "I knew that Sav and eventually Joe would come here." "To the crossroads?"
"Yes." "What about Vivian? Did you know he was too?"
"Yes, I knew Vivian was coming and I knew what his choice would be, he made that clear many years ago. And I knew about Brenda and Rebecca as well. But it was different for them. They weren't given the choice to go back like you have."
Phil glanced around the room, "Are they here...with you?"
"No. But they are close by."
Phil stared at him a moment. "Are you happy here Steve?"
"Yes. But sometimes I really do miss you and the guys, all the fun we had together."
"We've missed you too. I've missed you more than you'll ever know."
"I know that, but always remember that I will be right here...." Steve pointed to Phil's chest. "....and here." And tapped Phil's temple, then ran his fingers through his hair. "Want to jam a bit before you go?"
Phil's face lit up. "How much time do we have?"
"Space and time have no meaning here. It will feel like hours to you. But to them on the other side....minutes will have passed." Steve reached behind him and produced two acoustic guitars, giving one to Phil.
Their fingers flew over the strings, not playing anything in particular, but an entirely new guitar instrumental was born between them. The years apart melted away, even in this place of limbo, they were in tune with each other. Phil's fingers began to slow after awhile on the strings, as a tingle in the pit of his stomach began. He stopped playing and looked up at Steve.
"I have a decision to make don't I?"
"Yes." Steve replied. "You trusted Sav and Joe enough to send you on this journey? Trust them always and you will never be misled as you walk in the shadows of darkness."
"I do trust them." Phil felt the tingling deep inside him grow. Turning his head, but his eyes remained on Steve. "I know they will help guide me in the ways of the vampire." He heard the faint voices and looked around the room. "I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to you the first time."
"It's never goodbye." Steve smiled and stood up. Taking the guitar, he pulled Phil to his feet "Not that time and not this time either."
"But...."
"I've always been with you, you felt me."
The voices grew louder. The tingling stronger, it pulled at him. Phil held on to Steve's hand a little tighter. He glanced away from Steve to another part of the room, to where the voices were the strongest. Sav and Joe were calling out him, to bring him back to their world. He could clearly hear them calling his name. Hear the tremor of panic in their voices.
Phil looked back at Steve and listened to their voices. This was it, his decision, his crossroad.
Steve smiled a sad smile at him. He would love him to stay, but that wouldn't be what Phil truly wanted in the end. Steve leaned forward and kissed Phil. "Trust Sav and Joe, they will love and protect you for eternity, just like I will." Steve released Phil's hand and gently pushed him towards the beckoning sounds of their voices.
Phil looked at Steve once more before he stepped away from him toward the sounds.
"Phil." Steve called out.
Phil turned to him.
"I have been and always will be watching over you and yours. Could you tell the guys that for me? Rebecca, Brenda and Vivian will be doing the same and send their love with you on your return journey."
A single tear fell down Phil's check, then he smiled at Steve. "I knew it was you all those years watching over us. I love you Steve."
"And I you." Their eyes remained locked together as Phil backed away and was gone. Steve wiped his own tears from his face. "I'll always be with you."
Rebecca moved from the shadows to stand beside Steve. She wrapped her arms around his waist. Brenda did the same on the other side. Vivian came to stand behind him, his arms joined the others, to form a tight bonding between them.
"It's going to be alright Steve." Rebecca whispered. "This is what he wanted."
"Yes he did."
"It's never really goodbye." Vivian said, looking at the place where Phil had disappeared from their view.
Steve glanced back at Viv, smiling. "No it isn't."

Sav bit into his wrist and held it over Phil's open mouth, the blood dripped from the open wound and repeated. "Come back to us Phil."
"He's taking it." Joe sighted in relief when he saw Phil swallow.
Sav placed his wrist flush against Phil's lips. He felt the gentle pulls on his blood, they grew stronger the more he took. Sav sucked in his breath as the pain began as the vampire was born in Phil, the pulls grew stronger and the pain more intense. Sav groaned.
Joe looked up at him and saw the pain etched on his face. "Sav, are you alright." He asked with concern. Of all his years as a vampire, Joe had never witnessed anyone being brought across. Although he knew how to do it, he had never brought anyone across before.
"He...he needs more." Sav said in a rush.
Joe quickly bit into his wrist just as Sav was yanking his away. Phil's eyes flew open at the loss of blood flowing into him. Joe offered his and Phil grabbed his arm and began sucking on it.
"W...aahh...why is this more painful than a...a blood kiss?" Joe asked.
"The pull is much stronger. He's starving as the vampire grows strong inside him. The more we're able to give him now, the less painful first hunger will be for him." Sav told him drinking from the bottle he had taken from the bedside table.
"How...how do I know when to stop giving it to him? It's really starting to hurt." Joe's breathing became labored.
Sav took a hold of Joe's arm and gently pulled it from Phil. Phil's eyes locked on Sav who was softly talking to him. "Rest now, your body has many changes to go through and you'll need what strength you have to get through it." He leaned in closer to Phil. "Sleep now...." He caressed his face. "...we'll be here when you wake." Sav kissed him on the lips as Phil closed his eyes. Sav sat up and looked back at Joe. He had flopped on his back on the bed. Sav leaned over him.
"How do you feel?"
"Um...I...I feel weird...hungry." Joe told him.
Sav had him sit up and gave him a bottle of uncut blood. "Drink this."
Joe took it from him and guzzled most of it down. He looked at Sav and smiled. "Now I know why not many are brought across. It takes too much out of you."
"Yes it does. You should rest to."
"What about you?" Joe asked.
"I'm fine."
"No your not. I can see it in your eyes." Joe reached up and pulled Sav down against his chest.
"Ok...I'll rest for a few minutes. Phil will sleep for a while."
The three men lay across the bed. One in a deep sleep while his body continued to change. The other two, lay wrapped around each other in a lover's embrace as a light sleep claimed them.
