Chapter 41: Sunday morning
No one came to visit, because I was still asleep until two the next day. I woke up to get my first lesson in breastfeeding. Kitty was demanding Mommy feed her and I wasn’t going to let her down. Glenn walked in as the nursing coach sat with me, finally getting her to latch on. I looked up at him as he came in, carrying a dozen roses, Kitty’s teddy bear and a flat wrapped box.
“I swear that’s the most beautiful sight in the world.” He walked in and gave me a kiss, then moved down to kiss Kitty on her forehead. “How are the two most important women in my life?”
“She’s hungry and sleepy, and I’m tired. She gets red when shes sleepy, according to Chloe. She had her shift last night and watched her. Said she could stay in here tonight.”
Glenn nodded as the nursing coach left, leaving the three of us alone. He sat on the edge of the bed, watching Kitty feed and then yawn, ready for her nap. I put her up on my shoulder, letting her get rid of all the gas. It took about twenty minutes but I finally managed to get her to sleep. Glenn took her from me and held her as she snoozed, moving her hands aginst her face once in a while and making baby noises.
“She’s perfect. See Faith. Something can be perfect.”
I nodded, trying to get up. “She’s perfect. I wouldn’t trade her for the world.” I walked over to him, stepping gingerly because I was so sore.
“We created this. I still can’t believe it.”
I kissed him on the lips, feeling his other hand go around my waist. “Believe it. She’s here.”
He smiled, nodding toward the wrapped package on the table. “Your Dad sent that. I didn’t ask what it was. He wanted us to open it.” I sat next to him on the bed, opening the package. I smiled, seeing my dad had gotten Kitty a baby book, writing a note on the cover that said he was proud of all of his grandchildren, that he was happy for us and he would be there to see her on Sunday.
“When are we going home Sunday?”
“About ten. They want to make you lunch, whatever you want. Jess Amy and Sara said you needed something better than hospital food.”
I smiled, looking at Kitty in her father’s arms, right now gazing at him, awake from her nap. “Tell em to make sandwiches or something, I have to be able to eat one handed for a while.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
On Sunday when we got home, it was unseasonably warm. Everyone was in our kitchen, not wanting to take the party outside because it was still a bit cold. I was sitting in a rocking chair, holding Kitty as everyone came over to see her. She got passed from Grandparent to Grandparent first, then to uncles and aunts and freinds. Everyone got to hold her except the little ones. Mattie and Moore angry they couldn’t hold the baby. Amy had to explain they were too little and Kitty was a very new baby. They finally accepted it, so long as they could see her and say Hi to their new cousin as much as they wanted.
I was talking to Mark when Glenn brought her back to me, crying and hungry.
“Ok baby girl. Come on.” I took her and excused us, telling everyone it was time for lunch. I went into the living room and sat down in the bay window, staring out. I heard someone come in and saw Glenn and Mark, Mark nodding as Glenn sat behind me. He wrapped his hands around the two of us as he spoke, whispering into my ear.
“Do you remember when we agreed that we’d make Mark the godfather? Is that still alright?”
I turned and looked at Mark. “You finally agree to it?”
He nodded. “I want to. I promise to make sure she’s always taken care of.”
I smiled. “Sara gonna be godmama?”
“She said she would. You two going to have anymore little ones soon?”
I shook my head. “At least two years. I want to get used to traveling with a baby before we go trying for another.” Glenn looked down a bit. I turned to him and kissed his ear. “I do want another one, she’s only a few days old. Let me get used to her first before I start thinking about any others.”
She fell dozed as we talked, gurgling and rubbing her face. She hiccuped and smiled a bit from the gas. I handed her to to Glenn, turning to him as Mark left, saying he wanted to get something to drink. “Talk to me big man.”
“How long?”
“Two years. I wont ‘try’ for another two years.”
He kissed me, smiling weakly. “I think I need a nap as much as Kitty. I swear you said ten.”
“You do need a nap.”
He went and took her upstairs, bringing back down the baby monitor, telling everyone the guest of honor needed a nap after Mommy fed her.
Everyone stayed for a little longer before they had to go. Mark and Sara would take them all to the airport, Dad and the boys headed home with everyone to North Carolina for a while Glenn and I said we’d try to bring her down for Chritmas if her pediatrician said it was fine.
After everyone left, Catherine and David helped us clean up. I went up to take care of Kitty, hearing her squall and whine over the baby monitor. I fed, changed and held her, singing a lullaby as I started to fall asleep with her in my arms. Glenn came in and put her in the bassinette as I was falling asleep, climbing in bed with me and tell me again how proud he was, how happy and how much he loved me.
“You are my pride and joy as much as Kitty. I love you more than anything, Mama Sunshine.”
