"Hi," Kelly gave a soft smile as she sat opposite of Stephen.
"Kelly, thanks for doing this."
She nodded, "So, you wanted to talk?"
"Carrie...how's she doing?"
"She's doing ok. She got an A on her history test yesterday. She hit two doubles in the second game this week. You should've seen her--she was great."
"I don't think she would be too happy with me going to her game. She hasn't even called home."
"She misses you," Kelly replied. "And she worries about you. She's just hurt."
"Carole can be hard sometimes--"
"I think you hurt her more than her mom did," she admitted. "She feels like you betrayed her."
"I just want what's best for her."
Kelly studied him carefully, "You think her staying away from me is what's best for her?"
"No, you know that I think you're a great kid, Kelly," he sighed. "I'm just, I'm at a loss right now as to what to do. Carrie did break the rules by staying over on a school night."
"And I understand that. So ground her or something. Don't forbid her from seeing me. Carrie's shy, everyone knows that, although I still say she has absolutely no reason to be, but still, she is, and because of that, she doesn't have a large number of friends over here that she feels comfortable around."
"I know, and I do think that stopping Carrie from seeing you was the wrong decision."
"Then why'd you go along with it?"
"I know you may not understand it, but I need to support my wife."
"And you also need to make sure that your daughter is happy and feels loved, which right now when it comes to you, she is neither of those things."
"She hasn't called," Stephen shrugged. "What am I supposed to do?"
"Come to her game next week. It would really mean a lot to her."
He nodded, "Ok."
Kelly smiled, standing, "I better go...Carrie's probably waiting out back for me."
"It was nice talking with you, Kelly."
"You too, Mr. Underwood."
+++++++++
"So...how much do you love me?" Kelly looked up from her math notebook to across the table at Carrie who was studying.
"Well...usually that question is followed by a confession of some sorts, so I'm gonna wait to answer until after you tell me what you did," Carrie smiled.
"Well...technically this isn't my fault. I mean, I didn't go looking for him--he came to me."
"Who did?"
"Your dad," Kelly gauged her reaction carefully. "He came talk to me at the restaurant yesterday."
"Is he ok?" Carrie asked worriedly. "I mean, he's not in like pain or anything? His physical therapy's going good? Is Mom being a total bitch?"
Kelly smiled softly, "He misses you too."
"What did he want?" she questioned, calming down.
"To see how you were doing."
"What did you say?"
"I said he should come to your game next week...talk to you himself."
Carrie's brows furrowed as she got lost in thought.
"You're not mad are you?"
She shook her head.
"Want to take a break from homework and go veg out watching cartoons?"
She nodded.
Kelly laughed softly as she stood, "Come on. I think we may even have some popcorn."
+++++++++++
"So, you think my dad's really gonna come to the game today?" Carrie asked, watching as Kelly relaced her cleats for her.
"Of course," Kelly nodded. "Your dad loves you, Care. He wants to be there for you."
"Thanks," Carrie smiled as Kelly handed her a cleat before starting to untie all the knots on the other one's shoe lace.
"No problem. So how did this happen?"
"Um, well..."
Kelly paused to look up at her.
"Consider it a kind of hazing ritual."
"Hazing?" Kelly's eyes darkened. "Why?"
"New girl on the team," Carrie shrugged, trying to blow it off.
"Are they being mean to you?" Kelly could feel her anger rising.
"No, it's just stupid stuff like this. A couple of the other girls are mad that I wasn't even here for tryouts, and now I took the normal shortstop's starting position."
"But that's not fair," she protested. "You can't help it if you're better than her."
"It's ok."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to make a big deal out of it."
Kelly frowned.
"Please, don't make a big deal out of it. I don't want anymore crap from them."
"Alright," she nodded. "But if they're ever mean to you--"
"It's just harmless pranks...don't worry about it," Carrie assured, accepting her second cleat.
"Ok," Kelly agreed, standing from the piano bench in the choir room. "You should go get changed for the game. Do you want me to get you anything to drink?"
"Um, yea, can you get me a gatorade?"
"Sure."
"Thanks," Carrie smiled, giving her a quick hug. "See you in a bit."
+++++++++++
"Here you go, All-star," Kelly smiled as Carrie climbed on the bench in the dugout to be able to reach over the fence, grabbing the drink.
"Thanks, so much, Kell. I'll pay you back after the game."
"Nah, my treat...if y'all win. If y'all lose, you better pay me back plus interest," she grinned playfully.
Carrie laughed, stepping down so that they were eye level. She lowered her voice, "Is he here yet?"
"No, not yet," Kelly admitted, linking her fingers through Carrie's that were hooked in the fence. "He'll be here, though, I promise."
"And if not?"
"If not, I'll buy you a lifetime supply of gatorade."
Carrie offered a small smile.
"Hey, don't worry about it. He'll be here. You just go play hard, alright? Don't give the other girls a chance to say you don't deserve to be a starter, ok?"
Carrie nodded, looking around to make sure nobody else had heard.
"Good luck."
"Thanks, Baby," she replied softly.
Kelly smiled, winking before she turned to take her normal spot in the bleachers.
++++++++++
Kelly turned at the feeling of somebody beside her. "Oh, thank God," she smiled as Stephen locked the wheels of his wheelchair so he could sit next to her. "Hey, Mr. Underwood."
"Hey," he replied with an apologetic smile.
"Thanks so much for coming. I kinda told Carrie, and she's been really looking forward to seeing you again. I was almost worried you wouldn't make it."
"No...I made it."
"Is everything ok?"
"There you are dear," Kelly looked up at the sound of Carrie's mother's voice. "I turned back to get my purse, and you had already left."
"Sorry," Stephen whispered to the short Texan before turning to his wife. "Yes, well, I said we were running late. Carrie's usually in the top of the lineup, and I didn't want to miss her bat."
"Don't worry, Carrie's on deck right now," Kelly assured him.
"Kelly," Carole nodded, fixing her lawnchair to sit beside her husband.
"Hi Mrs. Underwood," Kelly replied, giving herself a mental pat on the back at her ability to keep her tone light.
"So deck? What's that?"
"That means she's going to bat next," Stephen explained.
"Oh, so that's her right there?" she motioned to the girl standing in the on deck circle.
"Yes."
"Carrie!" Carole called out.
"Shh," Stephen cautioned. "She's supposed to be timing the pitcher right now."
"Oh, nonsense, I'm her mother. Carrie!"
Carrie turned around confusedly. Her jaw dropped slightly at the sight of her mother sitting next to her father. She looked at Kelly who shrugged helplessly, motioning for her to turn back to the field.
"Well, that was rude," Carole sighed as Carrie turned her back to them.
+++++++++
"So I never really understood the point of this game," Carole noted.
"The point is to win," Kelly replied dryly. Carrie had struck out her first time at bat and popped up the next time as well as over threw first base and dropped an easy line drive. Kelly couldn't help but blame Carole for the way Carrie was playing.
"I never understood what all the fuss was about," Carole shrugged. "It's all pretty boring if you ask me."
Kelly held her breath as the girl at bat popped up. She let out a sigh of relief when Carrie caught the ball for the third out of the inning. She watched the Oklahoma native jog off the field, talking to the coach real quick before hurrying out the dugout and into the school.
"Where's she going?" Carole asked confusedly.
"Bathroom," Kelly replied, standing. "I'll be right back. I'm going get something to drink." She walked around the bleachers, making sure Carole wasn't watching before she hurried into the school building and to the nearest bathroom. "Care?"
Carrie looked up at her from where she sat on the bathroom counter, "Took you a while."
"I didn't want your mom to follow," Kelly replied.
"I don't have long. Lord knows it'll be three up, three down."
"I know," she nodded, walking to her. She stood right in front of her, placing her hands on her knees. "I'm sorry."
"You couldn't have known she'd come," Carrie shook her head.
"If it helps, I think your dad was just as surprised that she came as the rest of us."
"I don't want her here," her voice was soft.
"I know," Kelly rubbed her hands over the top of her thighs soothingly. "But please don't let her get to you. You know that's playing right into her hands, right? I can already hear what she's going to say: why are you wasting your time out there if you aren't any good?"
Carrie couldn't help but laugh at Kelly's impression of her mom, "Yea."
Kelly smiled, "I know you're great. Everybody else out there knows you're great. Don't let your mom steal your spark...and I'm not just talking about softball either, alright?"
Carrie nodded.
"Good," Kelly helped her down from the sink. "Think you have enough time for a little practice before you go out there? I'm feeling kinda rusty..."
Carrie smiled as their eyes met, "I think I have time for a quick one."
Kelly bit her bottom lip as the taller girl reached up, cradling her face as she gently pulled her forward, pressing their lips together in a sweet kiss. Her heart sped up as Carrie's thumb grazed her cheek softly before she pulled back.
"How's that?"
"When my mind stops being fuzzy, I'll let you know."
Carrie giggled softly, wrapping her arms around her. She felt herself sigh in content as Kelly hugged her tightly, "You always know exactly what to say and do."
"I just want to make you happy."
"Well, you're doing a very good job at that."
Kelly smiled as she pulled back.
"I should be heading back out there."
Kelly nodded, "I'll wait a couple minutes so it won't seem so suspicious."
"Promise you'll be there after the game so I'm not stuck by myself with my mom?"
"You drove me here...where would I go?"
"You know what I mean."
"Of course," she promised. "I'll be there."
"Thanks," Carrie gave her arm a gentle squeeze as she reached up, kissing the Texan's forehead.
+++++++++++
"Great finish," Kelly smiled, hugging Carrie as she exited the dugout.
"I thought they lost?" Carole asked, causing the two of them to break apart.
"Yes, but Carrie had an RBI and a great double play. She was able to finish strong despite her shaky start which is not an easy thing to do," Stephen explained.
"Thanks Dad," Carrie smiled, hugging him.
"You'll get 'em next time," he patted her back.
"Thank you so much for coming," she pulled back.
"So, are we ready to go?" Carole interrupted.
"If you're ready," Stephen looked up at his wife.
"Come on, Carrie," Carole motioned as she started to walk away.
Carrie looked at her confusedly, "I'm not going with you."
Carole frowned, "Carrie, come on. We are going home."
"I'm going home with Kelly," Carrie said surely.
"Enough of this nonsesnse," Carole replied, grabbing her arm. "You're coming home with us."
"No, I'm not," Carrie pulled out of her grip, thankful for Kelly as the short Texan stepped beside her protectively.
"Carrie, I am serious," Carole said firmly. "Now, let's go."
"No," Carrie shook her head, taking a step back. "Did you really think that just because you come to one game, that everything would be forgiven?"
"Carole, it's time to go," Stephen cut in.
"I'm not leaving without her," Carole said.
"Then you're going to be here for a long time," Carrie replied. "Come on, Kell. Let's go."
Kelly nodded, "It was nice seeing you again, Mr. Underwood."
"You too, Kelly," he offered a gentle smile.
"Carrie," Carole grabbed her once more as she tried to pass.
"Let her go," Kelly demanded, her voice low, her eyes ablaze.
"Don't tell me how to treat my daughter."
"Let her go," she repeated, practically shaking.
"Kell," Carrie managed to twist away from her mother to be able to place a hand on Kelly's stomach, holding her there. "It's ok. I'm ok," she whispered. "Come on, we'll just go this way."
Kelly could feel angry tears forming in her eyes.
"Shh," Carrie soothed. "The last thing you want to do right now is cry, I know that."
Kelly nodded, allowing Carrie to turn her around and guide her away. "I hate your mom," she muttered through gritted teeth.
"I know," Carrie rubbed her back comfortingly as they walked to her car.
++++++++
"Care, I honestly had no clue that she was gonna be there," Kelly said for the twentieth time that night as she rummaged through her dresser for a set of pajamas.
"I know," Carrie assured her.
"I just...I never thought--" her breath caught in her throat as she turned around to see Carrie standing right behind her.
"Sorry," she laughed softly.
"I'm sorry, Care. I don't know what she was thinking showing up at the game, and then trying to force you to go home with them? She was crazy."
"Are you ok?" Carrie studied her face carefully. "You were really upset when I pulled you away."
"Yea, I'm fine. I just didn't like seeing her treat you like that," she replied softly, unable to hold the other girl's gaze in their close proximity. She looked at the floor nervously.
"What if I said I didn't want to talk about it anymore?"
Kelly shrugged, still looking down, "That's fine."
"What if I said I just wanted to feel happy?" she asked, gauging her reaction.
Kelly looked up at her, realization in her eyes.
Carrie inched closer, placing her hands on either side of the shorter girl against the dresser behind her.
Kelly could only nod as her heart raced in her chest.
Carrie stepped into her, kissing her firmly, pinning her there.
Kelly drew in a sharp breath, surprised. Her hands instinctively reached for the other girl's waist as she returned the kiss, her heart now pounding at the feeling of Carrie's body pressed flush against her own. Carrie cradled her face with one hand, tugging on her bottom lip with her teeth, egged on by the soft moan that escaped the Texan's mouth. She tilted the shorter girl's head back, loving the way Kelly's hands were clutching onto her sides, holding her there.
Carrie deepened the kiss as Kelly pulled her even closer. She brushed her tongue against the other girl's bottom lip and felt her freeze. She pulled back, breathless, trying her best to slow her racing pulse, "You ok?"
Kelly nodded, gazing back at her with a mixture of emotions, "That was...was that..."
"My tongue?" Carrie offered. "Yea...is that ok?"
Kelly was running her fingertips against her lips, "Yea...so that's what a french kiss feels like?"
"Um," she laughed softly. "Not exactly. You kinda stopped before the kiss actually began."
"Oh," her brows furrowed.
"Not that there's a problem with that," Carrie quickly assured. "Whatever you want or don't want to do is fine with me."
Kelly was still running her fingers over her lips.
"How'd it feel?" Carrie asked, realizing she was gonna have to ease it out of her.
"Different."
"Good or bad?"
"My knees buckled, and I thought my heart was gonna explode."
"So, good," Carrie nodded with a soft smile.
"So it gets better?" Kelly looked her in the eye.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, if it was like that and the kiss hadn't even started yet, then I can't even imagine how it must feel once it does."
"Yea," Carrie nodded with a slight laugh. "It somehow manages to get better."
"Maybe next time, when we do that we should be sitting," Kelly suggested thoughtfully.
"Ok, whatever you're comfoftable with."
"I just...the knee buckling...probably not safe standing up."
"Yea, I think you're right," she giggled.
Kelly's eyes examined her face carefully, "You're ok?"
"Yea, sorry if I got a little carried away," she reached up, tucking a curl behind the other blonde's ear.
"That's ok. I don't mind."
Carrie smiled as she pulled her into a hug, "What would I do without you?"
"You'd probably be hanging out with Stacey, wearing one of those ridiculous headbands they all had on today...I mean, did you see those things?"
Carrie shook her head laughing as she pulled back, "You're such a dork."
"You say that like I don't have fifty people a day telling me the same thing," she grinned. "You'd think you could come up with something original by now."
Carrie rolled her eyes, "Come on, I'm starving. We'll go get some hamburgers. Think of it as my payback for the gatorade plus the interest."
"Care--" she started to protest.
"Nope," Carrie shook her head. "A deal's a deal."
