“Mom, what are you doing?” Kelly smiled, leaning against the doorway of the laundry room, watching her mother move clothes from the washing machine to the dryer.
“Laundry,” Jeanne replied simply.
“Kate and I’s laundry?”
“I wasn’t really paying attention to whose it was…”
“Mom, I can do my own laundry,” Kelly laughed. “How many times have we gone over this?”
“I’m sorry, but I’ve seen you work a washing machine, and I really don’t feel like having my house blow up.”
“I was twelve.”
“You nearly burned the apartment down…which wouldn’t have been the last time that happened…”
“Really, Mom? Really?”
Jeanne chuckled as she turned the dryer on.
“So, I talked to Kate.”
Jeanne sighed, turning to her, “I’m not going to do your dirty work, Kelly Brianne. I’m your mother, not your henchman. Now, you need to suck it up, and tell that girl the truth because you’ve been lying to her long enough, and I raised you better--”
“Mom,” Kelly cut her off with a smile.
“What?” Jeanne asked, blowing a tuft of hair out of her face.
“I told her.”
“Good,” she nodded. “What’d she say?”
“She asked me to be her girlfriend.”
“Oh, Lord, please tell me you are not in here hiding from that poor girl--”
“Mom,” Kelly laughed. “I said yes.”
“You said yes?” Jeanne looked at her in disbelief.
“I said yes,” she nodded. “I really like her, Mom.”
“Aw, sweetie,” Jeanne smiled as she walked over to her, and pulled her into a hug. “I’m so happy for you. She seems like such a great girl.”
“She is,” Kelly replied, hugging her back. “Thank you, for doing this for me.”
“Anything for my baby girl,” Jeanne squeezed her arm before going back to the laundry. “You know what? We should have your sister over for dinner.”
Kelly’s eyes widened, “Mom, no.”
“What?” Jeanne questioned. “You know she’s going to want to meet Kate.”
“Yea, to grill her. You know how she is. She’s worse than Jason.”
“She’s your big sister. She’s just trying to protect you.”
“Mom…”
“Too late, I’ve decided. Your sister is coming over for dinner. No more fussing.”
“Fine,” Kelly mumbled, turning to walk away.
“And no pouting, either,” her mother called after her.
Kelly laughed, shaking her head.
++++++++
“Should I be worried?” Kate asked as Kelly paced the floor of the spare bedroom.
“Yes,” Kelly nodded surely.
“Is she…is it the gay thing she has a problem with?”
“What?” Kelly stopped to look at her. She smiled softly at the nervous look in the taller girl’s eyes and walked over to where she was sitting on the bed. “No, she has no problem with the gay thing. It’s the me dating thing. In her mind, I’m still six.”
“You’re the hottest six year old I’ve ever met.”
Kelly laughed, her thumb grazing across the blonde’s jaw line. “You know what I mean. She wasn’t there when I grew up. It’s like she thinks I’m still way too young to date. She tries to scare off everybody: girl, boy, doesn’t matter.”
Kate reached out, pulling her down on her lap.
“You’re just getting bloder and bolder, aren’t you?” Kelly teased.
Kate grinned, stealing a quick kiss, squeezing her gently.
“You’re fixing to squeal again, aren’t you?” Kelly winced.
“I’m trying not to,” Kate laughed.
“What’s got you so excited, now?”
“You. This. The fact that I get to hold you and kiss you and…you’re mine.”
Kelly smiled, “I’m all yours.”
Kate let out a light squeal before stealing another kiss.
“Done now?” Kelly laughed.
“I think so,” she nodded.
“Good,” Kelly took her face in her hands, holding her still as she kissed her deeply. Kate’s hand soon found it’s way under the back of her shirt, smoothing over the small of her back. Kelly moaned in appreciation, pushing forward, laying her back on the bed. She pulled back, smiling gently down at her as their noses brushed playfully. She kissed her lightly before kissing her cheek and whispering in her ear, “Have I told you how beautiful you are, lately?”
“Kelly…” Kate wrapped her arms around her tightly.
“What?” she asked innocently, pushing herself up to look at her. “You’re extremely hot, and I think you deserve to know.”
“You said beautiful,” Kate smiled.
“Oh, yea, well, you’re that too,” Kelly shrugged.
“You’re crazy.”
“You’re cute.”
Both of their heads turned at the sound of a knock on the door.
“Kelly, quit making out with your girlfriend; dinner’s ready!” Kelly made a face at her sister’s voice.
“Sorry,” she apologized, turning back to Kate.
“Don’t worry, she’ll have to try way harder than that to scare me off,” Kate winked.
Kelly grinned, kissing her firmly.
++++++++++++++++
Kelly smiled at the feeling of Kate walking directly behind her, matching her step for step, staying close, “I really hope you’re not trying to hide behind me because there is a bit of a height difference that just isn’t working in your favor.”
“I know…can’t you walk on your toes or something?” Kate asked.
Kelly laughed, reaching back for her hand and pulling her beside her, “Come on, it’s not gonna be that bad.”
“You know, every time someone says that, it ends up being ten times worse than ‘that bad’.”
“You watch too much television,” Kelly shook her head as she led the way into the dining room, excited to be able to spend some time with her sister.
“Glad you could come up for oxygen long enough to join us,” Alyssa smiled.
“Nice to see you too, butthead,” Kelly greeted as her sister pulled her into a warm hug.
“So how long do we have you for?”
“A couple more days. I have a lot of work waiting for me.”
“How’s the hunt for new management going?”
Kelly made a face, “That’s the work I have waiting.”
“Why couldn’t you do that over here?”
“What would be the point of me being over here if I’m just going to lock myself in a room all day and read over contracts?”
“True,” Alyssa nodded. She glanced at Kate over the top of the Texan’s head. “Well…aren’t you going to introduce me to your new girlfriend?”
“Be nice,” Kelly warned.
“I’m always nice,” Alyssa smiled, nudging her out the way as she held out her hand. “Hi, I’m Alyssa.”
“Kate,” Kate smiled back nervously as she shook her hand. “Nice to meet you.”
“Ah, good, everyone’s here,” Jeanne smiled as she walked into the dining room. “Dinner’s ready. Why don’t y’all come help me bring the food to the table?”
“Yes ma’am,” Kate nodded, hurrying into the kitchen.
Jeanne raised a knowing eyebrow at her two daughters.
“What?” Alyssa asked innocently. “All I did was introduce myself.”
“Play nice,” Jeanne instructed. “She’s a real sweet girl, and your sister really likes her.”
Kelly blushed, “Gee, thanks Mom.”
“I’m just trying to help.”
“I know,” Kelly smiled, kissing her cheek as she walked passed her and into the kitchen.

Kelly sunk lower in her seat as her sister asked Kate question after question, knowing that once she got started there was no way of stopping her until she was satisfied.
“So did you go to college?”
“Yes, I did,” Kate nodded.
“Did you graduate?”
“Yea,” she laughed softly.
“What was your major?”
“Communications.”
“How were your grades?”
“I was in the top ten percent of my class.”
“Communications doesn’t seem all that hard of a major,” Alyssa shrugged.
“Hey…” Kelly fussed.
She shrugged again, her eyes still focused on Kate, “So what do you want to do with your life?”
Kate’s forehead wrinkled in confusion, thinking that would‘ve been obvious by now, “I want to sing.”
“You know, the music industry is very hard to break into and then once you do, it’s very fickle.”
“I’m doing just fine so far.”
Kelly smiled.
Alyssa frowned, “You mean on my sister’s payroll?”
Kelly winced, realizing where her sister was headed.
“I-I, uh, well yea, but…” Kate struggled.
“So did this thing start between you two before or after she hired you?”
“Alyssa…” Kelly warned, sitting up in her chair.
“I, um, after?” Kate glanced at Kelly nervously.
“So are you just content to live off of my sister for the rest of your life?” Alyssa questioned.
“That’s enough,” Kelly replied firmly, hitting her hand against the table.
“I’m just trying to look out for you,” Alyssa pointed out. “Those are valid questions.”
“I mean it. Just stop.”
“But--”
“She’s right,” Jeanne spoke up. “I know you mean well, but what you are insinuating is unfair and downright rude, and I will not tolerate you treating my guests that way, understand?”
“Yes ma’am,” Alyssa frowned, glaring at Kate.
“Now, let’s all just enjoy this nice meal, shall we?”
Kelly nodded, smiling thankfully as her mother patted her hand reassuringly.
++++++++++++++
Kelly muttered a string of curse words under her breath as she did the dishes after the meal was over, clanging them loudly in the sink.
“You know, I don’t think Mom would be too happy with your language right now,“ Alyssa noted as she walked into the kitchen.
Kelly forced down a frustrated groan.
“And I really don’t think she’ll be happy if you break her favorite china…”
Kelly tossed the forks in the sink, causing the soapy water to splash onto the counter as she turned to face her, “What do you want?”
“I didn’t mean to make you so upset,” she replied, slipping her hands into her pockets.
“Yea, well you did. How could you…I mean…damn it,” she cursed, unable to get anything else out. “If you…if you only knew her, but no, you just…you just…God, I am so freaking pissed at you right now.”
“Kelly, I’m sorry.”
“If you only knew her, and knew how amazing she’s been to me and how much she’s supported me with all the bullshit going on right now with work, if you only knew…you’d feel like shit right now for the way you were to her, hell, I feel like shit right now for you.”
“Kelly, come on, I’m just trying to protect you. People are trying to use you all the time, and I hate seeing that. I hate seeing you get hurt. Don’t you remember the last time you were with someone you worked with? Remember how that ended up?”
“That was different.”
“How?”
“Because this is different. Kate’s different.”
“How do you know?”
“I just do, alright?” Kelly sighed. “I just do. I’ve never…she just…she just makes me so happy. And I trust her so much. Right from the beginning I’ve always been able to tell her everything, and she tells me everything, and I just…this is different.”
Alyssa took a deep breath, studying her little sister closely.
“Can’t you at least give her a chance? Get to know her a little before you go making judgements about her?”
“Sure,” she nodded, watching the relief roll over her.
“Thanks,” Kelly offered a forced smile before turning back to finish the dishes.
++++++++++
“You wanna go swimming?” Kate asked as she and Kelly lay together on the sofa. Alyssa had long since left to go back home, and Jeanne had already retired for the evening.
“Random much?” Kelly replied, scooting as close to her as she could.
Kate shrugged, “It helped you relax last time.”
“You just wanna see me nearly nekked again.”
“Please, all I have to do is say the word and you’d be stripped down to your birthday suit in 2.2.”
Kelly giggled.
Kate smiled, kissing her forehead.
“And plus, I am relaxed,” Kelly added.
“No you’re not, you’re still mad at your sister.”
Kelly sighed, pushing herself up, “Well aren‘t you? I mean, she was so far out of line, it’s ridiculous.”
“You know I don’t think of it that way,” Kate replied, her hand soothing up one of Kelly’s arms. “I mean, I know you’re the boss, so technically the money comes from you, but I don’t know…it’s not like you go around handing out our paychecks, or even that it’s your name that’s signed to them--it’s some random guy’s--so I don’t put the two together. If I did, it’d just be weird.”
Kelly nodded.
“And plus, I work my butt off for this job. It‘s days and days of traveling, late hours would be an extreme understatement, and let’s not even talk about how long it’s been since I’ve seen my family. It’s a job, an amazing job, but it’s still a job, and I’m not gonna be made to feel guilty about working my ass off in order to live my dream.”
Kelly smiled, kissing her softly.
“You know me,” Kate tugged on her shirt lightly. “And you know this…it’s real, and it’s amazing, and fuck what anybody else thinks.”
Kelly’s eyebrows flew up, “Excuse me?”
“That’s what Ashley told me when I was worried about what other people would think of me for dating you,” Kate blushed.
“Well, she does have her moments,” Kelly laughed. “You were worried about people being like Alyssa?”
“No,” Kate shook her head. “I never even thought of that. I was more worried about what it means for me that I like you.”
“Ah…” Kelly nodded. “Yea, that’s always a tricky question.”
“Yea, but for now it’s enough for me to know that I like you…a lot.”
“A lot?” Kelly grinned.
“A whole lot.” Kate could feel herself blushing again.
“How are you so cute all the time?”
“It’s a gift,” Kate smiled as Kelly pressed their lips together warmly.
