Chapter 43
The Friday after Thanksgiving - early evening
*******************
James could hear a commotion in the hall as the front door was opened to admit the visitors. He closed the album he’d been looking at and returned it to the bookshelf beside the couch.
David was already on his feet, holding out his hand to him.
“Come and meet Bo,” he said. “I’m sure you’ll like her.”
“How do you know it’s Bo and not Beth?” James asked, allowing David to pull him to his feet.
David laughed.
“From the noise,” David said as a squeal of excitement reached their ears.
It sounded like a young girl.
James followed David into the hall.
As they rounded the corner a small dog rushed toward them and leapt at David who caught it easily. He didn’t seem at all surprised to have twenty pounds of what looked like solid muscle hurtling toward him.
“Shit!” James exclaimed.
“Meet Fritz,” David said, rubbing the dog behind one ear.
James took a step away from the dog. A loud woof caught his attention and he turned to see an enormous black dog bounding toward them. He flattened himself against the wall hoping it would continue past him. No such luck. It had stopped, looked up at David and then at him, before starting to nuzzle his crotch.
“Bertha!” David cried. “Leave James alone.”
The dog ceased its sniffing and turned to David, wagging its tail enthusiastically as he bent to pet it.
James remained motionless hoping the dog would forget he was there.
“How are you girl?” David said as he hugged her. He let the small dog slip to the floor and it scampered off.
The huge animal began to lick David’s face.
“Oh, Bertha, do you have to do that?” He looked up at James. “She misses me,” he explained. “She’s my dog… They both are… but it got too difficult looking after them properly in LA with the hours I was working so Mom and Dad agreed to keep them here for me…”
The dog turned her attention back to James.
“It’s okay to pet her,” David said. “Look, she likes you…”
Bertha had resumed sniffing him.
James covered his privates with his hands.
David laughed.
“She won’t bite,” he said, looking up at James.
James swallowed nervously. He could feel the blood drain from his face.
“James, are you okay?”
David grabbed Bertha’s collar and pulled her away from him.
“I’m sorry, Baby. You don’t like dogs? I had no idea…”
“Er… bad experience once,” James replied, trying to keep his cool.
“… but she’s a soppy old thing, aren’t you, girl? You wouldn’t hurt James, would you? You’re quire safe with her, Baby.”
“What about the other one?”
“Oh, I expect he’s gone to check on Ginger and Marmaduke,” David said, opening the door to the studio and pushing Bertha inside.
“Ginger and Marmaduke?”
Please let it be cats…
“Cats,” David said.
Thank
“You haven’t met either of them yet?” he sounded surprised.
James shook his head. He’d noticed all the internal doors had catflaps so he’d assumed the family had had a cat at one time. He’d also noticed the catflap avidavid’s room was set in the exit-only position. Maybe David didn’t like cats…
“I expect they’re asleep on one of the beds. They spend most of their time…”
“Uncle David!” a tiny voice screamed as a young girl, aged about six, came running into the hall followed by Patti.
“Lizzie!” David said, as she threw herself into his arms. “How’s my favourite niece?”
He picked her up and her her so that she could look him in the eye.
“I’m your only niece,” she said.
“That doesn’t mean you can’t be my favourite,” he said. “Don’t I get a kiss?”
James smiled as he watched her plant a loud kiss on David’s cheek.
“Mommy says you have a boyfriend,” she began. “I want to see him…”
James came out from his hiding place and David turned her so that she could see him.
“Lizzie, meet Uncle James,” David said.
James smiled.
“Oh, what pretty hair you have?” she said, reaching out to touch it.
James laughed and bent his head so that she could run her fingers through it.
“Well, thank you, Ma’am, but it’s not half as pretty as yours,” he replied, lifting one of the auburn ringlets resting on her shoulder. He tucked it behind her ear and smiled at her.
Surneurned back to face David.
“I like him,” she announced. “He can stay.”
“Uncle David!” another voice cried. This time it was a young boy. James guessed he was about eight.
Patti moved to take Lizzie from David.
“I want Uncle James to hold me,” Lizzie said.
David shrugged. James nodded to let him know he was okay with it.
David held her out to him and she wrapped her arms around his neck as he took her weight.
“Where’s Mommy?” James asked.
“She’s outside,” Lizzie said waving her arm in the direction of the front door, “with Daddy and Grandpa.”
“They’re unloading the car,” Patti explained.
“Not too big a man for a cuddle, are you, Davy?” David said to his nephew.
The boy shook his head and looked uncertainly from David to James.
“This is James,” David said.
“Hello, Davy,” James said.
The boy nodded to him.
David picked him up and instead of holding him as he’d done Lizzie he flipped him over and held him upside down. The boy squealed in delight.
David set him down on his feet just as David’s father came through the front door accompanied by a woman. They were laden down with packages. It seemed Patti wasn’t the only one to have visited the sales today.
“Oh, David, you came back!” she said. “And I see you’ve brought James. It’s lovely to meet you, James…”
James returned her smile.
“You too,” he said.
“Oh, put her down,” she added as Lizzie started to swing her legs. “Lizzie, you’re too heavy for that…”
James returned Lizzie to the floor with a grateful nod.
“Go and see what Grandma has for you, Darling…” the woman said, patting her on the back.
The child ran off in the direction of the kitchen.
The woman extended her hand to James.
“Everyone calls me Bo,” she said. “I’m so pleased you could make it after all…”
James shook her hand.
“I’m glad to be here,” James said. “What a beautiful daughter, you have. She’ll be a real heartbreaker one day…”
Bo laughed.
“Oh, she already is. You should see the way she can twist David around her little finger… Come with me, James. I want to learn all about you.”
She took him by the arm and turned to face David.
“Davy, why don’t you make us all some hot chocolate… You do like hot chocolate, don’t you, James?”
“Er… yes.” It had been a while since he’d had any though.
“Then that’s settled,” she said. “We’ll be in Mom’s studio…”
She tugged James’ arm. He didn’t budge.
“Er… the dog…” he began.
“Oh, I forgot,” David said. “I’ve put Bertha in there for now. James is a bit nervous of dogs. Why don’t go igo in the den while I round up Fritz.”
David was smiling at him.
“I’ll let you know when it’s safe to come out.”
Much to James’ embarrassment, David bent forward to kiss his forehead.
Bo smiled and David headed off to the sitting room.
“This way, James,” Bo said, leading James back toward the front door. “The den is down here.”
She opened a door which James had earlier assumed led to a cloakroom. Just then a man, in his late thirties, who James guessed must be her husband entered the front door followed by Dave.
“It’s getting cold out there…” the man said.
Dave closed the door behind them.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw…” he began.
“Oh, hi!” the man said on seeing James.
Bo paused to introduce them.
“This is my husband, Jonathan,” she said.
“James,” he said taking James’ hand and slapping him on the shoulder. “It’s good to meet you. Call me Jon.”
“Likewise,” James mumbled as he felt the bones of his hand being squashed together in Jonathan’s vice-like grip.
Bo handed her coat and gloves to Jonathan.
“Take these upstairs for me, Darling,” she said, “and then, why don’t you come and join us. David is making hot chocolate.”
“What about Lizzie and Davy?”
“They’re with Mom in the kitchen. Lizzie is helping Mom to make pastry. Davy is going to watch Dad pluck a pheasant.”
“Then I’d better not keep him waiting,” Dave said, heading into the kitchen.
“Ah,” Jon said, addressing Bo. “Then it’s your turn to bath them both tonight.”
“Okay, but you get to clean their boots,” she replied, leaning forward to kiss him on the cheek.
Jonathan smiled and started up the stairs as James followed Bo into the den.
A large ginger and white cat, apparently asleep on the couch, opened one eye and looked at them.
“Ginger?” James enquired.
“The very same,” Bo said.
Ginger rolled over, stretched and chirped a greeting.
“He’s beautiful,” James said, sitting next to him and holding his hand out for Ginger to sniff it.
Ginger licked his fingers.
Bo sat down on the other side of the cat and stroked the back of his head. He began to purr.
James ran a finger ovingeinger’s neck from his chin downwards. The purring increased in volume.
“So, James, tell me how you and my brother hooked up,” she commanded.
Oh, dear! Just when he thought everything was going so well…
