Chapter 45 Diagnosis
Craig Scott lay motionless, listening to the commotion going on around him. As best as he could tell there were plenty of people here, wherever ‘here’ was. He’d figured out that he was in a hospital, probably Duke he guessed, but couldn’t remember how he got here. He could hear Chris and some woman arguing, probably a nurse he thought, and now it sounded like Ric was here too, and there was absolutely no mistaking Popi’s voice.
“Wow, I must be in pretty bad shape if Ric is here.” He lay there trying to sort out the different voices and make some sense of the conversations. Again he tried to open his eyes,
“Nope, they don’t work” he thought.
Speaking was another of those things he couldn’t seem to do. He tried moving his hand and though it felt like it was moving it must not have been cause nobody seemed to see it. He decided that since he couldn’t get anyone’s attention that he would just relax and listen, see if he could find out anything interesting. He smiled to himself thinking that this was kinda like what he and Chris used to do when they were little, and Raven was on the phone or on the porch with Ric and she thought no one was around.
“Always came up with major blackmail info on those two” he laughed, and then he wondered,…” did they hear me?”
Chris was firmly entrenched in Raven’s arms,
“Yeah” he said boldly, “My family’s here now.” “Now we’ll see whether I can get some answers…now we’ll see!”
Raven cradled him against her, covering his face protectively with her hand, kissing the side of his head.
“Are you all right?” she asked, her eyes wide with panic.
“I’m fine, Rae, I’m fine…but Craig,” his voice trailed off into silence as he turned to stare at his brother’s still body.
As Vin and Eric continued to gain control of the room her eyes fell on Craig’s lifeless form. Releasing Chris she moved slowly to the side of his bed. His face was so badly bruised and swollen she almost didn’t’ recognize him, and the tubes; there were so many tubes.
“Ric” she called over her shoulder, panic evident in her voice. Eric moved quickly to her side picking up Craig’s chart from the foot of the bed as he did. Flipping through the chart memorizing everything as quickly as he could. Raven was going to have questions and she would want him to provide the answers. She turned to him her eyes wide with disbelief,
“Ric, what does it say?”
He looked through a few more pages, with Raven anxiously waiting for a reply,
“So far everything looks like it’s under control…the arm, pelvis…even the leg….are good to go.”
He flipped through a few more pages,
“The damage to the kidney…much much less than they initially thought, looks like minor bruising, should heal nicely with bed rest.”
Again he turned more pages,
“The spleen….removed, and it’s noted that he responded nicely after that.”
“What else?” She said as she turned back to gaze at her brother.
“He hit his head pretty hard Jic…there is …some fluid build-up” he said the tone of resignation apparent in his voice.
“But they’re monitoring the head injury closely.” Anticipating her next question he answered before she asked,
“They’re giving him something to keep him from developing blood clots, and a little something for pain, the respirator is just to make it easier for him to breathe…this way he doesn’t have to work so hard, that’s why there are so many tubes.”
She turned back to Craig, “His face…”
“Don’t worry babe,” Vin said as he moved to stand on the other side of the bed, “I’ve been in bar fights where I looked worse than that…it’s just a little swelling, it’ll go down…right Ric?”
“Absolutely, just some swelling Jic. Remember that day I saddled Antelope without shaking out his blanket?” “He had that burr under the saddle and kicked the crap out of me?” “I looked ten times worse than this, remember?”
A faint smile crossed her face, she did indeed remember, but somehow, right now looking at her brother fighting for his life, it wasn’t much consolation.
