The dim light poured in through the windows as Kristy opened her eyes. She glanced at the clock, 5:45 am. The small apartment she had managed to find in New York was blessedly quiet and she even had her own small balcony. She heard the coffee maker flip on across the room and after a few minutes the heavenly smell of a fresh pot made its way to her. The studio set up of the apartment afforded her little privacy as it was mostly just one big room, but she figured she wouldn't be doing much entertaining anyway so it wasn't a bother. She hauled herself out of bed and threw on a tattered white robe over her PJ's. Weaving her way threw the maze of unopened boxes she sighed at all the work that had to be done. The minisucle amount of furniture she had reluctanly taken with her sat in a group to one side of the space looking bare and out of place. The soft dawning light grew across the floor in pink streaks. She knew that she would some how have to find the time to unpack all of this stuff but she just didn't know when that would be. Kristy grabbed the only unpacked coffee mug out of the dish drain and filled it to the rim with coffee, flavored cream and sugar. The comforting scent of vanilla made her moan with delight. She walked over and threw open the french doors that lead out onto the stingy balcony. She stood breathing in her coffee and stole a few minutes to listen to her new city surroundings wake up around her.
She heard her cell phone ring inside and she groaned. She ran through the box maze to grab it off her night stand. She didn't even bother to check the caller ID for fear they would hang up.
"Kristy" she said into almost out of breath
"There’s my girl" Bubba said cheerily
"Bubba" she almost screamed like a little girl "what in the hell is going on man"
"Nothing much, hope I didn't wake you up" he said with a laugh at her reaction.
"No way, I am up. I've gotta meeting with Jeff's record company at 9:00" she said in between a big yawn
"How’s that going?" he asked
"Good I guess. Jeff is the best, he is so involved with is own career, so it makes my job way more easy" Kristy said as she sipped her coffee
"Got any new dates yet" he said curiously
"Yeah we start the summer tour in Florida on June 5th"
"wow, that’s soon and your birthday" he said with a note of joy in his voice.
She was so touched that he actually remembered, she didn't know what to say at first.
"We have five dates in Florida, then we go to Atlanta, Charlotte and then Nashville" she said ticking the dates off on her finger.
"so you are doing the Dirty South tour" Bubba said with a chuckle.
"yeah I guess" Kristy said in a weak tone as she staired at the boxes marked JORDAN STUFF in big bold letters
"Well, I guess I won't hold you up any more then" Bubba said as he noticed the shift in her tone. "I was just doing my weekly check in" he finished
"Bubba" she paused to swallow the massive lump in her throat " how is he?" she almost whispered
She heard him sigh deeply "Good I guess. He's making it work. The small amount of shows he has been doing have been bigger than ever but to those in the know we can see that his hearts not in it any more" he finished
"Tell him I said hi" she squeaked out through the rising lump
"I will" Bubba said heavily "Kristy, listen, I don't want to get back into the middle of this again, but it would do him a world of good to actually hear from you, he is really having a rough time"
"Oh yeah, a hit album and a tour of stadiums with women constantly throwing themselves at you sounds like a really rough time" she said with more bite in her voice than she really meant.
"Kristy" Bubba said scoldingly
"Sorry" she said hastily
"Look, whether you realize it or not he is constantly greiving for you" Bubba said quietly
"Ok, what ever" she said rolling her tear swollen eyes
"stop rolling those beautiful blue-green eyes" Bubba said with a laugh
The tears that welled finally spilled over as the familiarity they had struck her and she missed it so very much.
After her pause he spoke again. "There are certain songs that he now refuses to sing because of you" he said to emphasize what an impact she really was having.
She was completely stunned "What? Really?" she barked out quickly "What are they?" she finished curiosity getting the better of her
"You know what they are" he said and she heard someone's voice in the back ground speak to him. OK she heard him say in answer.
"well girl, I have to head off, but you better call me if you ever need anything"
"I will" she said with regret. She could really use him right now.
"Big Guy" she paused to start their traditional goodbye exchange but he cut her off
"The checks keep coming so don't worry about him from my end" he said to her unasked question "Love you girl" he finished.
"You too" she said as the tears continued to spill out of her eyes.
"Bubba" she croaked out
"Yeah" he said with feeling. He could hear the tears in her strained voice.
"This is killing me too you know" she said collasping on the bed as the tears streaked through her hair
"Well, you two have to get your lives straight if you are ever gonna work" Bubba said with gathering strain in his own voice.
She sucked in a shuddering breath. I know was all she could manage in response. She wanted to tell him that she was now legally seperated and living in New York but she knew he would tell Jordan and she didn't want to cloud his mind or worse risk him showing up here.
"You ok girl?" Bubba said to her long pause
"Yeah, sorry to hold you up" she said swiping at her face and finally composing herself again.
"Promise you will call me if you need anything" He said in a ordering tone
"Ok Ok, mother I will" she said with a laugh more for him than her.
Yeah alright, she heard him say to the back ground again.
"Well, I will let you go sweetie, call me anytime day or night" he said with a new smile in his voice
"I will, promise" she said back and closed her phone.
She lay back on the bed for a moment longer and wondered where they were now. Stop that damn it, she mentally punished herself. She checked the clock.
"Fuck gotta get my ass moving" she said to the empty apartment.
She quickly down half of her luke warm coffee as she walked across the room to the bath. She was stripping off her clothes as she went to save time.
The hot water felt good against her skin and she resisted the temptation to just stay under the spray until she had used every last drop of the comfort. Feeling refreshed and composed again she carefully applied her makeup and spent extra time fussing with her hair. She was going swimming in the shark tank today and she was banking on them underestimating her. She pulled the cleaning bag off of her beige suit. She had to have it altered because of all the weight she had lost in the past few months.
"Only 15 more to go" she said to the mirror as she slid into the matching heels.
Looking at her reflection carefully she took a deep breath.
"well here goes nothing" she said to herself as she picked up her purse and breifcase and headed out the door.
She ran out of the building and the wind whipped at her hair, sending it flying in her face
"Damn it, why did I even bother doing it today" she said as she reached the curb to hail a cab.
She nervously fussed her hair back into its somewhat original state on the fifteen minute ride over to the record companies office.
Pushing through the doors, she checked her watch. She had five minutes to duck inside the lobby restroom to recompose herself before she jumped in the tank with the middle aged sharks of the record industry. Her insides were jello. Her cell chirped from her purse and she knew with out a doubt who it was before she even answered it.
"what, Jeff?" she said as she carefully reapplied her lipstick with one hand.
"where are you?" he said anxiously
"what do you mean?" she said with a smile. There was no answer. She could hear his breath quicken in increased anxiety.
"Kristy..." he sucked in a breath "don't tell me that...."
She didn't even listen to the rest as she exited the bathroom and closed her cell phone.
"I am always one step ahead of you, remember that boy" she said walking up behind him.
He whirled around, the phone still to his ear.
"So sorry I underestimated you," He said looking her up and down
She shot him a killer smile to test her look out. He grabbed her hand and twirled her around as he whistled.
"Man oh man, what till these goons get a load of the best the Dirty South has to offer" he said appraisingly
"None of that mister" she said, but the boost to her confidence was exactly what she needed at the moment.
"Come on girl, lets go blast them out of the water" he said as he offered his out stretched arm.
She laughed as she took it and stepped with him on to the elevator.
"Are you as nervous as I am" he said tapping one foot on the floor.
"Yes, I am, but please try not to make it so obvious" she said with a glance down at the noisy foot
He shot her a quick smile "sorry" he said as the foot stopped suddenly
The elevator dinged on the floor and they exchanged a look.
"well here goes nothing" she said with a deep sigh.
She felt Jeff give her a reassuring squeeze on her arm as she approached the receptionists desk.
The young woman sat surrounded by a high and carefully polished monstrosity of a desk as if in some kind of strong hold meant to protect her. She was speaking into a head set and her perfectly manicured nails clacked noisly on a computer keyboard. When she looked up and saw Kristy and Jeff standing there she flashed them the universal one minute gesture with those shinny nails and finished her conversation.
"Ah yes, Mr. Timmons and Ms. Knox, they are expecting you go right in" she said with a gesture over to the massive oak doors of the conference room. The high polish shine on them reflected their images as they stood before them. Confusion set in as Kristy reached for a door handle that wasn't there. She heard a low mechanical buzz from the receptionist desk and the doors swung smoothly inward. The conference room was typical. Big glossy oblong table standing like a flag ship in the center of the room surrounded by high backed leather chairs that were currently occupied by middle age men in various states of balding. The view of the New York sky line from the floor to ceiling windows on the opposite wall was jaw dropping as if to offer a distraction from the hours of boredom that had to be present. She and Jeff stepped in and sized up their opposition. Sharks, Kristy thought as she met each mans gaze one by one with a small nod and her usual plastered smile.
"Oh my god" she heard Jeff murmer through his greeting smile and at the same moment she had to do a double take at the man sitting to the right of the head seat.
"Chad" she whispered through her smile, teeth now clenched as her blood boiled under her skin. She almost didn't reconize him all polished and pressed in an expensive suit. He grinned at her and nodded his head slightly.
She had to shake her head gently in order to clear the confusion. Why the hell was he here? The question threatened to unsteady her so she pushed it away in order to focus.
"Gentlemen" she said out loud her voice coming out in a commanding steady tone "Let's get started"
They all rose as she and Jeff approched the table and Jeff pulled out a high backed chair for her to sit. She fished her disks and folders out of her obviously cheap breif case and organized them on the table before her as the introductions were made.
"Well gentlemen, Jeff has had an amazing response from the few shows we have tested his latest music out at and we feel that its time he did a proper tour with it but to do that sucessfully we need an album" she finished with confidence.
"See I told you she would come out with guns blazing" Chad said from his end of the table with a smirk on his face.
She shot him the biggest who in the fuck do you think you are look and he had the balls to wink at her.
"As Mr. Zimmerman so elequently pointed out, I am not here to wastes anyone’s time. We need a release date for the album and preferably this summer" she added finishing her gaze around at them with the man in the head seat.
No one commented as she got up to insert her disk into the computer. She keyed up the presentation she and the girls had so tirelessly worked on and stormed her way through it confidently. Figures, facts and projections poured off her tongue just as she had practiced. She was happy to note that all eyes were on her as she spoke and they only breifly looked away when she made mention of a display on the wall screen. When she paused to feild any questions one executive spoke up.
"What about his website"
"Under previous management" Kristy began not looking at Chad. She was so happy that baldy had lead the discussion in that direction, this is where they really shined. "Jeff's site was placed in the hands of persons not so experienced in web based productions" she finally looked over in Chad's direction "and if fell into disaray" she finished with a wink of her own. She gestured to the Jeff's new home page now displayed on the screen. "I have put together a team that does fantastic work and will also manage and maintain the site on a daily basis." She felt a slight bit guilty for taking credit for putting them together when she had really been the add on but she couldn't take time to go into all the sticky little details now.
"Doubling Liz and the girl's work load" she heard Chad say from behind her.
"Yes and no" she said meeting his cocky gaze. She was not going to let him call her out right now.
"Kelly is the main manager for this site so Liz can keep up with Jordan's" she finished and had to stifle a laugh at the word she almost used for manager. She figured that webmistress was not the right term to spout off in a room full of middle age baldies.
"Oh so these are the same people that handle Jordan Knight's site" another executive commented glancing down in Chad's direction.
She had to get the focus back on her and Jeff, not Jordan so she cut off Chad's answer. "No" she interjected which warrented a glare from Chad. "Jordan has official sites in many countries and Liz and her team are based in the UK" she finished pleased that she could give them the credit that they so deserved.
"Beautiful work" the executives commented as she navigated them through the site. They loved all of Sue's graphics and how easily you could navigate through the information. She closed down the presentation and took a steadying breath. Now it was time for the knock out punch. Low and quick her dad had always told her. Don't flinch, go for the straight knock out, she reminded her self silently as she straightened.
"well gentlemen, I have given you everything I know of to prove to you that Jeff's more than capable of making head way with an album. All I can do now is give you a choice." She paused and was pleased with herself as she watched many of them jerk to attention.
"Either you give us a release date or we can find another company who will" she finished as the sweat rolled down her palms.
She nodded at Jeff as she gathered up her files and then she confidently strod out of the board room behind him.
"Holy shit" Jeff said after the doors closed with a click. "what do we do know" he finished turning around to look at her.
"we wait" she said tapping a finger to her glossy lips "and if I did my job right, hopefully it won't be long"
She glanced back at the receptionist who was chatting animatedly on the phone. After a few minutes of nervous pacing that felt like hours, she paused and looked over at her.
"Ms. Knox, they are ready for you again" she said.
Kristy heard the buzz of the doors again and she sucked in a steadying breath. As they swung gracefully inward Chad stood before her.
"Way to go girl" he said softly as he shook her hand. He pulled her into him and gently whispered into her ear "You better call me, we need to talk" he finished by pressing a business card into her hand.
"Jeff" Chad said with a nod as he strode out.
The executive at the head of the table rose.
"Ms. Knox you drive a very hard bargin but we admire your professionalism and your belief in our artist" He said with a nod at Jeff who stepped up besided her and laid a hand confidently on her shoulder.
"You have your release" He said gesturing to a time table on the wall screen.
She let out the nervous breath she had been holding in.
"The single will release in four weeks in 25 major radio markets with the album to follow between four to eight weeks depending on the response" He turned back to her "Start your tour Ms. Knox and lets hope you can back his talent up"
"You can count on that" she said with a brilliant smile and nod at the room. She decided just to turn and leave while luck was on her side and before they could change their minds.
She and Jeff didn't speak until they reached the lobby. She walked out into the spacious entrance and looked up at the high glimmering chandelier. She clinched her fist and let out an excited breath.
"oh my god" Jeff's voice echoed around her "You fucking did it" he said as he picked her up around the waist and spun around. Before he sat her down she took his face in her hands "We did it" she said and kissed him on the lips noisily.
He sat her down and she put her hands on his shoulders "are you ready for this" she asked trying to look concern but the joy kept shinning through.
"You bet your sweet ass" he said "so now what" he shrugged
"I have got a lot of calls to make and emails to send" she said as they walked out
In the blinding light of the sidewalk she froze in her tracks. Chad was climbing into a black SUV. She turned around quickly.
"Oh shit" she said to Jeff who was smiling giddy at the passing cars.
"What?" he said looking around
"Don't look idiot" she said trying to fake like they were just having a casual conversation.
The SUV slowly merged into traffic in front of where they stood and she saw the look of complete confusion on Bubba face as he peered at her through the passenger side window as they drove away.
"oh god" Jeff said as he put a hand to his head
"No worries" she said composing herself "we have work to do"
Jeff looked at her with a grim expression as she looked after the SUV in the crowded street.
"are you ok" he said placing a hand on her shoulder "I had no idea those guys were going to be here"
"How could you" she said her eyes filling "they didn't know I was in New York so I am sure it wasn't intentional" she finished as she hung her head.
"How long has it been" Jeff said as he rubbed her arm for comfort
"what?" she said looking into his eyes
"How long has it been since you have seen or talked to him" Jeff said as he fished out his hankerchief for her
She took it and shrugged as she dabbed at her eyes "I don't know two months or so"
"Maybe you should talk to him" Jeff said tentatively
"I don't have time for this" she said suddenly "We leave for Flordia in three days. I will email you all the details tonight." she said in a rush as she threw up her hand for a cab.
"Kristy" Jeff said pleadingly as the cab pulled to a stop
She turned to face him and he could read the misery in her eyes. "Jeff I have moved on, he has" she paused "done what ever he has done so lets just leave it at that please" She touched his arm "I will call you later"
He grinned at her in an attempt to make her smile
"You need to get ready to leave" she said as she got in the cab
He nodded in response
"Three days" she mumbled through the glass window as she held up three fingers.
