Smoke billowed around the room, making shapes against the small lights at the centre of each small table. Wine was clinked, kisses shared, people were relaxed and happy. Jade leaned back in the small jazz club and closed her eyes; Gerard’s voice filled her soul. Her man stood on the stage, in his tux. Bow tie creased and hanging free round his neck, he stood with his hands in his pockets singing softly.
” What a difference a day made, twenty four little hours
Bought the sun and the flowers where there used to be rain
My yesterday was blue dear
Today I'm a part of you dear
My lonely nights are through dear
Since you said you were mine
Oh, what a difference a day made
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy since that moment of bliss
That thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you, is you”
Every so often his eyes caught her and she found herself blushing like a schoolgirl as his eyes bore through to her heart. Gerard half smiled and turned his attention to the rest of the small club.
”My yesterday was blue dear
Still I'm a part of you dear
My lonely nights are through dear
Since you said you were mine
Oh, what a difference a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy since that moment of bliss
That thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you, is you, is you”
Looking around her Jade watched people stop and take notice of his voice, he was stood beside the piano, and she knew he could hear Jamie Cullum’s voice over his own. It was his favourite Cd at the minute and the sudden love of Jazz music that had brought them to this quiet amiable bar. Applause filled the air as Gerard stood back; thanking the pianist he stepped down, nodding at the man about to follow him up. Walking back toward Jade he sat beside her and clasped her hand in hers.
”You ok?” he asked.
Jade smiled at him, and he smiled back. Really smiled. There was a time he smiled and she could see a hurt behind it, during everything they had been though he was never completely happy. Now however it shone out of him.
”I couldn’t be happier,” she said softly, kissing him on the cheek.
Earlier that week they had said goodbye to his family and dropped them off at the airport, she had watched him clutch his mother tightly and tried to understand the love they shared but she never would. Jade loved her mother but she wasn’t there for her when she needed her most. Her father was still dying of Cancer but she couldn’t bring herself to go and see him, she felt no love when she thought of him. Watching them made Jade want a child, a child she would love unconditionally. A child who she would never abandon or use, a child she could share everything with and that child would never leave her. Gerard’s child.
”Gerard can we go home now?” she asked timidly, “I know you love this place, but I’m feeling a bit ill” Jade smiled, and held his hand.
Gerard looked her up and down, “Yeah of course. Are you ok?”
”Yes, I’ll be fine, I just need some air”
Hand in hand they left the club and walked the 20 minutes or so back home. Jade walked in silence, unsure of what to say. The night was cold and she wrapped her shawl tighter around herself, Gerard had tried to give her his jacket earlier but she had insisted he kept it. She would rather be cold than think of him being cold, now she was beginning to wonder why she had said that, but they were only a few blocks from the house. Gerard grinned down at her, knowing what she was thinking and pulled her tighter to him, rubbing her arms. “I’m going to buy you a lovely winter coat” he sang out loud.
”Are you going to sing when you give it to me?” Jade laughed.
”If its raining, I only sing in the rain you know” Gerard smiled down at her and quickened their pace, “Come on, I’m cold now, I dread to think how cold you are”.
Running through the front door, Gerard turned and shut the cold air outside. They both stood in the dark in the hallway; within minutes their mouths found each other.
Stopping for a second Jade stepped back, “I can still see you, you know!” she whispered, reaching out and encircling his waist.
”You cannot, its far too dark. I cant see you”
”I can still see you perfectly in my mind, I was thinking the other day if I were to go blind it wouldn’t really matter”
”You think the weirdest things, but they are always very lovely to hear” Gerard laughed, groping about in the dark trying to find the banister.
”Why don’t you just turn the light on?” Jade asked, stumbling along side him.
”Because we are supposed to know our house inside out, we should be able to manoeuvre in the dark” he laughed, tripping up one step, “Oh shit that hurt. Get the light”
”Nope we must learn, or eat more carrots, come on we are half way up anyway” Jade tugged him to his feet and led him the rest of the way up.
In the bedroom finally they found their way to the bed, the moonlight shone through the window so it was easier to see each other and remove their clothes slowly.
”Sing for me again Gerard” Jade asked, stroking his hair softly.
”What do you want me to sing?” he asked, lying his head on her naked chest.
”How about shave that beard your giving me a rash?” Jade said seriously. Gerard shook with laughter. “I’m not sure I know that one. I promise I will shave soon” he nestled his head back between her breasts and sighed with content.
”Jade can I make love to you” he asked quietly.
”Well that sounded enthusiastic” Jade giggled, “No I want you to sing for me. Please, just for me”
Gerard climbed further up her body, and rested on his side, one arm over her he planting a kiss on her forehead he thought for a few minutes then softly began singing to her.
”Sure I know you’d like to have me
Talk about my future
And a million words or so to fill you in about my past
Have I sisters or a brother
When’s my birthday how’s my mother
Well my dear in time I’ll answer all those things you ask”
Jade sighed, recognising this as her favourite song off his favourite album. Leaning back, she watched him grin as he started his second verse.
”But for now I’ll just say I love you
Nothing more seems important somehow
And tomorrow can wait come whatever
Let me love you forever but right now
Right now
Some fine day when we go walking
We’ll take time for idle talking
Sharing every feeling as we watch each other smile
I’ll hold your hand you’ll hold my hand
We’ll say things we never had planned
Then we’ll get to know each other in a little while”
Jade slid down the covers and Gerard’s hand stroked down her body, circling her nipples he’s continued lower and gently pushed two fingers inside her. Jade groaned as his voice reached her one more time.
”But for now let me say I love you
Later on there’ll be time for so much more
But for now meaning now and forever
Let me kiss you my darling then once more
Once more
But for now let me say I love you
Later on I must know much more of you
But for now here and now how I love you
As you are in my arms I love you
I love you
I love you”
By now Jade was writhing around, unable to think straight. His voice combined with his touch was driving her toward her peak, and she whimpered softly as she felt her orgasm roll over her body several time. Gerard smiled and kissed her softly.
”Will that do?” he asked, “Can I stop singing and make love to my wife now?” he smiled, reaching over to the bedside table to fish out a condom.
Jade reached out and held his arm, pulling it back toward her, “No” she whispered. Gerard looked down at her and felt a surge of love.
”Are you sure its what you want?” he asked, hugging her close. “It’s a big thing are you ready?”
”If you are” she smiled, feeling nervous and excited. Gerard kissed her slowly and meaningfully then carefully entered her. As they moved together they felt a new kind of love, a kind of love that wanted a child. As they hit their peak, for the first time he filled her properly and he felt a protective streak run through him, the idea that even right now Jade could be carrying his child turned him on and made him want to look after her forever. Holding her as tight as he could, he kissed her once more and then cuddled her to sleep.
As jade pottered about the house the next day, she found herself excited about the prospect of becoming a mother. The idea of Gerard as a father made her feel like her heart had exploded, they would be a perfect family, she decided. They would have a child and raise it like any child deserved to be raised, with love and devotion. Glancing out the window she watched Gerard watering the garden, he turned to look up and waved at her. Grinning she waved back, and stuck her tongue out. Dropping her washing she decided to run down and join him, knowing they would end up squirting water at each other and running around like two children. But chances like this wouldn’t always be there she thought to her self as she crept up behind him and jumped on his back.
