"So your birthday's next Friday," Ashley pointed out with a smile as they all sat around their usual table in the cafeteria.
"Yep," Kelly nodded.
"Any plans?"
"I'm grounded until Monday," she frowned.
"Well maybe we could all go over," Carrie suggested.
"No parties," Kelly shook her head. "But it's fine...we'll just do something the next weekend."
"You don't want to do anything at all on your birthday, though?" Ashley asked. "I mean, you may not be able to have a party, but I can still come over just to hang out or whatever, if you want."
Carrie raised an eyebrow, turning to Lyndsey and Mary to make sure she wasn't the only one that heard that. She wasn't as Mary and Lyndsey both had confused looks on their faces.
"No, that's alright," Kelly replied. "I'd rather just wait so we can all do something together."
Ashley nodded, looking down at her plate.
"We have that meeting for choir," Carrie noted. "Don't forget."
Kelly turned to the clock on the wall, "You ready to go now?"
"If you are."
"Yea, let's go," she nodded, standing. "Bye y'all. Lyndsey, see you at work."
Lyndsey smiled, giving a short wave.

"So, choir meeting, huh?" Kelly asked as they sat on the bench in the dugout.
Carrie shrugged as she stretched out, laying her head in the Texan's lap.
Kelly smiled, running a hand through her hair.
"So Ashley has been nice lately..."
"Yea, she has. Has she apologized to you, yet?"
Carrie laughed softly, "I doubt she'd ever talk to me unless you're there and she had to."
"She said she would," Kelly frowned.
"Oh...well...maybe she just hasn't had a chance to yet?"
"It was a week ago."
"Maybe she forgot."
Kelly rolled her eyes, leaning back.
Carrie took Kelly's hand in her own, bringing it to her lips. She kissed her fingers softly.
"So how are things at your parents'?"
"They're ok," Carrie nodded. "A lot better than before."
"You think I'm gonna be allowed over there any time soon?" she smiled, teasingly.
"Give it a little more time," Carrie smiled back, kissing her hand. She brought their hands up to the shorter girl's neck, touching it gently. "You did that yourself?"
"I'm not completely useless when it comes to make-up."
She laughed softly, "No, I guess not. You did a good job."
"You know," Kelly rested their hands on Carrie's stomach. "I really wish I had known you when I was younger."
"Why, so by now you'd be an expert kisser?"
"No," she laughed. "Just because...I don't know...it's nice talking to you. It's very relaxing, you know? And I feel like that could've really helped me...to have someone to talk to."
"Yea, but then you may have never started writing, and that would've been a shame."
"Nah, I would've started writing anyway. That's just something I can't help."
Carrie smiled.
"I also wish I would've known you when all that stuff with your parents happened," Kelly poked her stomach softly. "I don't know how you dealt with all that by yourself."
"Same way you dealt with your parents' divorce by yourself," Carrie reminded. "You just...you're forced to deal."
Kelly nodded, "Yea. I guess I just don't like the thought of you being forced to deal."
Carrie gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
"So how long is this choir meeting of ours supposed to last?" Kelly smirked down at her.
"I figure until the end of lunch," Carrie shrugged with a grin.
"Sounds good to me," Kelly agreed, feeling Carrie's other hand join their two that were on the taller girl's stomach.
Carrie held Kelly's hand in both of her own, becoming lost in thought about nothing in particular as Kelly closed her eyes, leaning back to enjoy the sun that was warming the air around them.

"Hey," Lyndsey smiled as she looked up from the candy counter to find Carrie walking in to the movie theater.
"Hey," Carrie returned the smile. "Can you do me a favor?"
"Sure."
"I dropped Kelly off a while ago, and when I got home, I realized she left her math book in my car. Can you make sure she gets it? I don't know if she has homework or anything."
"Yea, of course," Lyndsey nodded, taking the book that Carrie was holding out. "I'm bringing her home, so I'll give it to her then."
"Thanks," Carrie gave another smile before turning to walk away.
"Hey, wait a sec."
She turned back around.
"So, was it just me and Mary or did you totally feel like Ashley was throwing us under the bus today?"
"What do you mean?"
"With the whole birthday thing."
"Oh yea..."
"You so did, huh?"
Carrie laughed softly.
"Ok, good, because for a second there Mary and I thought we were being crazy, but I mean, she was seriously like, forget the rest of your friends, how about I just come over without them?"
"Yea, that's what it seemed like," Carrie nodded.
"And I mean, I get that they're best friends and all, but I don't know...it was definitely a 'what the hell?' moment."
"How does that work?" Carrie asked curiously.
"How does what work?" Lyndsey asked, handing her a bag of M&M's.
She smiled, accepting them, "Ashley and Kelly are best friends. You and Mary are too?"
"Yea."
"And then Jessica and..."
"Her boyfriend. You haven't met him yet, have you?"
Carrie shook her head.
"He's a really sweet guy, and they're adorable together. They totally have the best friend slash love thing going on. Totally enough to give you a toothache sometimes, though, because they're so cute."
"That's cool."
"Yea, you know, usually we all hang out together, but sometimes we break up into our smaller groups, although that's all changed since you got here."
"Me? Why?"
Lyndsey handed her a drink.
"Oh, I don't really like lemonade," she admitted.
"It's ok," Lyndsey shook it off. "Jessica's not the manager today, so I have to make it look like you're a customer and not just a friend talking to me."
Carrie laughed.
"The manager today is a real dick, like majorly," she rolled her eyes. "Oh, but, I mean, did you want something to drink like for real? Because I can fix you something."
"Oh, no, I'm good."
"Ok, so what were we talking about?"
"The group dynamic changing?"
"Oh yea," Lyndsey nodded. "It's still me and Mary, right? But now it's more you and Kelly, and then Ashley hangs out with Jebbie and Boo when they aren't locked in some room, sucking face."
"Boo?"
"Jebbie's boyfriend...it's a nickname."
"Ah..."
"You know, Kelly was right...you're pretty cool once you stop being shy."
"Yea, it just takes me a while," Carrie nodded. "Being one on one helps though."
"You warmed up to Kelly right away."
"It's hard not to, though, right? I mean, she has to be the most comfortable person to be around ever."
"True," Lyndsey nodded. "She's definitely something special. She's going places, you know?"
"Yea."
Lyndsey tapped the counter, looking up as a few customers worked in, "Ok, girlie, I'm gonna have to bail on you and get to work, but I'll make sure to give Kelly the book."
"Thanks," Carrie waved before walking out of the theater.

Carrie smiled as she quietly snuck into Kelly's room, holding a cupcake with a single lit candle in one hand. Kelly was sleeping on her stomach, the sheets down around her waist, revealing her bare back as she snored softly. Carrie walked over to the bed, kneeling down beside it. She kissed her forehead before starting to sing softly, "Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Kelly. Happy birthday to you."
Carrie watched as Kelly's eyes opened slowly. The Texan smiled at her groggily, "Hey..."
"Hey," Carrie laughed softly.
"What time?"
"Seven-ten. I gave you an extra ten minutes since it's your birthday and all."
"You're so thoughtful."
Carrie laughed, holding out the cupcake.
"Did you make that for me?"
She nodded, "Make a wish."
Kelly closed her eyes tightly before blowing out the candle.
"What did you wish for?"
"I can't tell you," she giggled, dipping her finger in the icing on the cupcake. She touched it to the tip of Carrie's nose.
"Hey..." Carrie protested with a smile.
Kelly laughed, tasting the icing on her finger, "That's good."
"You can eat it on the way to class," Carrie nodded. "But you've got to get moving because we're ten minutes behind now."
Kelly grumbled, closing her eyes.
"Kell..." Carrie laughed softly, reaching out to rub her back soothingly. "Come on. You've got to go to school."
"No," she pouted.
"Why not?"
"It's my birthday. I shouldn't have to go."
"While I whole-heartedly agree, that doesn't seem to be the case. So you've got to get your booty up, because I'm pretty sure you don't want your mom to extend your grounding."
Kelly groaned.
"Baby," Carrie smiled, her hand pausing on her lower back. "Today's Friday. You can stay in bed all day tomorrow, and pretend it's your birthday then."
"Ok," she sighed.
Carrie chuckled, reaching forward to kiss her forehead again, "Ok. So, how about you get up, and I'll go grab you some juice?"
Kelly nodded, smiling softly as Carrie kissed her forehead a third time before standing and exiting the room.

Carrie smiled as she walked with Kelly to the Texan's locker. Kelly paused, her mouth hanging open slightly.
"Y'all are dead," she laughed softly.
"It was all Mary's idea," Carrie took her arm, urging her forward to her locker that was decorated with balloons and streamers.
"Happy Birthday!" Lyndsey and Mary cheered when they got there.
"Y'all..." Kelly smiled, hugging all three of them.
"There's a surprise in there," Mary noted, pointing to her locker.
Kelly raised an eyebrow, opening her locker cautiously, "Aw..." She reached into her locker, pulling out the sunflowers.
"Carrie said they were your favorite."
Kelly turned to Carrie who shrugged with a smile, "You guys...y'all really didn't have to do all this."
"Of course we did," Lyndsey put an arm around her. "It's your birthday. You're like royalty today."
"Do I get a crown?"
"Got it right here," she took a tiara out of her booksack, placing it on her head. "I stole it from the drama department. I figured they owed you after all the stuff you've done for their plays."
Kelly giggled, "How do I look?"
"Like the coolest person ever," Mary nodded. "But the bells about to ring, so we've got to get going. See you for lunch?"
"Definitely."
"Cool...I've never ate with royalty before," she teased.
Kelly hit her arm playfully as she and Lyndsey gave her another hug before they started to walk to class.
Carrie smiled, reaching out and straightening the tiara, "It suits you well."
"Yea?" Kelly posed playfully.
Carrie laughed, pulling her into a hug, "Happy Birthday, baby."
"Thanks, Care," Kelly hugged her tightly.
"You like the flowers?" she pulled back enough to be able to look at her.
"They're perfect. Thanks so much for remembering."
"Wasn't that hard," Carrie gave her arm a gentle squeeze. "Now come on, you don't want to be late to class and stuck in detention for your birthday."
"Definitely not," Kelly nodded in agreement, taking Carrie's arm that she offered, allowing the taller girl to guide them through the hallway.
