Kristy sat at her computer and finished off the last of the emails that she needed to do that day. Everything was in motion now and she pushed back with a relieved sigh. She eyed the now empty coffee pot and felt her stomach churn as she remembered the entire amount that she had just finished drinking. Her nerves seemed to hum as she stood as if they were miles of tension wire that were wound way to tight. She stretched and finally felt her mind settle. The site was being updated and Sue was working on new promotional posters for the shows and the album. She had contacted all of the venues and radio stations to beef up promotion and had sent a press release to the towns in Florida that they were scheduled to play.
"God" she said to herself as she looked around at the jungle of boxes that seemed to surround her.
"I have got to get this taken care of" she said to the back of her hand as she massaged her temples. What in the hell possessed her to drink a whole pot of coffee. She figured she better use the energy while she had it and at least attempt to get her life in order. She sat down on her bed and pulled the first box to her.
After about two hours her small apartment was actually starting to look like someone lived there rather than just using it for storage. She still had pictures to hang and knick knacks to arrange but all in all she was proud of herself. She stared ominously at the last four boxes that remained unopened. Those were the ones labeled Jordan stuff. After her chance encounter today she just didn't know if she could handle tackling those today. She hoped that she would be able to shake the absolute surprise that she had felt at seeing him but it still lurked in the back of her mind. If Bubba had known where she was then why didn't he mention that they were here as well and better yet why was Chad even at that meeting? He had nothing to do with Jeff anymore or was there something going on that she had missed. She was so lost in thought the knock on her door sent her heart beating dangerously high.
She opened the door to a smiling Jeff who was for once nicely dressed.
"To what do I owe this surprise" she said opening the door for him
"Well I thought that I would drop by and see your new pad and maybe" he looked at her tentatively "entice you to have some fun with me tonight"
"Fun?" she said with a laugh "Fun is my middle name, what did you have in mind?"
He walked into the apartment and looked around.
“Nice” he said nodding his head with a smirk “going for the I really don’t live here look” he said turning back to her
“You should have seen it a couple of hours ago” she said with a wry smile.
“Storage unit” he asked absently as he checked out the bath room.
“How did you know” she asked in surprise
“Been there” he said absently as he made his way over to the old couch that she had reclaimed from a friend and eyed if for dirt before he sat down
"I didn't get that off the street incase you were wondering" she said taking the matching chair opposite to him
"well...I did wonder" he said laughing "anyways I figured we could go out to a nice dinner and maybe catch some music or a club"
"now Jeff are you asking me out" she said with a finger to her lips
Jeff shook his head "no no I just..."
She cut off his response laughing "lighten up kid, you will have a heart attack before you are forty" she said getting up and walking over to her closet to find something to wear "I would love to"
She stepped back out "Judging by your dress I guess we are thinking nice, not pizza" she said gesturing to his button up shirt and dress pants
"we could do pizza if you want but if you are going out with me you need to look hot" he said with a laugh
"oh well I aim to please" she said selecting one of her outfits
"Let me change and shake off the day and I will be with you in a moment" she said as she went into the bathroom.
After about twenty minutes she reappeared with a tight fitting cream colored top and camel colored pants. Jeff frowned at her as she zipped up her boots.
"What?" she asked as she looked down "is something wrong?"
"I was just wondering why an amazingly tall girl like yourself feels the need to put on 7 inch heels" he said walking over to her "it makes a short guy feel intimidated"
She laughed "these aren't 7 inch heels and I am sorry but these are the only brown boots I have" she said sticking her foot out.
"well then I know what I am giving you for your birthday then" he said laughing
She grabbed up her purse and opened the door for him "so where are we going exactly" she asked as they made their way to the stairs.
"I was thinking maybe sushi" he said with a shrug
"Ohhh I love sushi, and I haven't had it in ages" she said with excitement
They walked arm in arm down the busy street and she caught him up on all of her business of the day. They found a nice restaurant and went over to the sushi bar and order food.
They sat and ate and drank just a little too much sake so she had to grab the chair when she stood.
"you ok?" Jeff laughed at her
"Yeah I am fine" she said with a hand to her stomach "I will never know how raw fish and sake go together but some how it does"
"Yeah I guess so" Jeff said with a smile
"So where to next" she asked as her head finished swimming
"well I was thinking we could go to a show or a club" he said as he held the door for her
She froze on the side walk. A show? She hoped he didn't mean what she thought he did.
"well..." he looked around anxiously "I have a friend that is playing a venue and I just thought that" he said with a pleading look
"Jeff, I don't know what the hell you are thinking but if your so called friend is Jordan Knight then you can forget it" she said with a hand on her hip
"Kristy, I think you should at least go and see him you never know" Jeff said in an almost pleading voice
"Jeff, I don‘t know if I can" she said as her throat tightened
"Kristy please just go with me, we can stand in the back if you want" he begged
She looked away from his sweet face and sighed. She really wanted to go, wanted to see him again, but she was so afraid of what he would do or say. What if he just blew her off, then her entire world would be shattered. She looked over at Jeff who was still giving her that boyish pout.
“You don’t have to talk to him, if you don’t want” he said grabbing her hand “Just go and see what you started” he finished as he leveled his gaze at her.
Her stomach jumped into her throat at his comment. What she started. She didn’t really start anything but she knew that in the back of her mind she would love to see the show that she once helped promote into greatness. She sighed and knew she was going to regret it "Ok you win, I will go" she finished with a hand on his arm
He tried his best to keep her laughing as they walked arm and arm to the venue. When they got there were people lined up everywhere.
"Oh my god Jeff, I don't know if we are going to get in or not" she said looking around at the swarming crowd
"oh we will" Jeff said standing up on tiptoes looking around.
Kristy was trying hard to figure out who he was looking for when she spotted Bubba's massive outline and bald head. Jeff waved at him and he motioned them over.
People eyed them curiously as they pushed through the crowd.
"Hey man long time no see" Bubba said as he clasp Jeff on the back.
"yeah good to see you too" Jeff said with a cough as he got his wind back
Bubba locked eyes with Kristy and she could feel the emotion in her throat rise.
He didn't say anything, she figured like her he couldn't with out any emotion so he just hugged her gently.
Bubba turned and lead them through the doors and into the venue. Kristy couldn't hold back the gasp as she looked around. The place was huge. So much bigger then the ones she ever saw him in.
They obediently followed him around the side of the stage and Kristy froze as Bubba started through the doors to the back.
"what?" Bubba said as he turned to her
"uh, yeah well I don't know if that is a good idea" she said nervously
"Oh god girl come on" he said with a gentle hand on her arm.
She reluctantly allowed him to lead her through the door and around to the green room. She held her breath as she walked in and couldn't even get anymore air as Jordan, Joe and Chad stood looking at her. They didn't seemed surprised and she eyed Jeff coolly as he shook Chad’s hand.
“Kristy” Joe said excitedly and ran over to give her a hug
She couldn’t help but laugh at his boyish excitement “Joe, how have you been” she said in his ear.
“Not bad” he said with a half smile as he released her.
Chad leaned over and hugged her and whispered Congratulations in her ear.
"thanks" she said back in an unemotional tone.
She knew Jordan was staring at her but for some reason she couldn't look at him. Jeff and Bubba began a conversation and were soon chatting animatedly. Joe and Chad were going over something that looked like a set list with her and Jordan standing around them just as on lookers. Chad glanced between them and exchanged looks with Jeff and Bubba.
"Jeff, listen I really need to show you something" Chad said motioning to the door as he opened it
Kristy shot Jeff a furious look as he turned walking out the door. He only smiled to her and added a small wave as he walked out. Her, Bubba and Jordan stood for a moment with the tension stretching dangerously tight in the quiet. Bubba looked at his watch.
"I really need to go and check security because its almost time for the doors to open" he said looking between them. She held his gaze desperately as if pleading with him not to go.
“And I need to make sure my music is ready” Joe piped up as he moved to the door.
She looked at him with a strained look and he gave her a wary smile as he and Bubba walked out.
She heard Jordan let out a breath and she cursed herself for not bringing her cigarettes with her. She felt she could smoke a pack at the moment. Jordan walked over to the table that was filled with drinks, alcohol and food. She smiled as he opened a new bottle of vodka and filled a shot glass. When he tossed back the shot, she laughed softly and walked over.
"I think I need one of those too" she said grabbing up a shot glass.
He laughed as he filled hers but it didn't reach his clouded eyes.
After she took hers she turned to face him. "I am sorry to surprise you like this, it wasn't my idea and I had no clue that they would do this to us" she said putting a hand on his arm.
"Its ok" he shrugged not looking at her
He took another shot and slammed down the glass in frustration.
When he pulled out a pack of cigarettes she sighed with longing.
"want one" he said offering it to her. He still wasn't looking at her
"sure" she shrugged as she pulled one out. He pulled out a pack of matches and struck one. He lit his and then offered her the dying flame. She inhaled as the end of her cigarette glowed, she exhaled the soothing smoke over the flame blowing it out.
"Pyro" Jordan muttered.
Her heart almost stopped. She looked up at him with a deep longing in her eyes. He still wouldn't hold her gaze.
He turned and began filling another shot. Before he could down it she covered the glass with her hand.
"I don't think you should do that, you have a show remember" she said taking the glass out of his now limp hand. He immediately ran it through his hair and walked over to the couch.
She downed the shot herself and took a deep steadying breath as she walked over to join him.
"Jordan, please look at me" she said as she tried her best to cover the pleading in her voice.
He looked up reluctantly and she could tell that he was looking over her shoulder not into her eyes.
"what’s with you lately" she asked with concern in her voice.
She watched him shrug as he exhaled the thick smoke.
The silence stretched into miles between them as they sat beside each other on the couch.
"thanks for coming" he muttered to the couch and she jumped a little at his speech.
She turned to him and finally their gaze met. She felt fire erupt in her middle and couldn’t help lick her dry lips.
“Don’t do that” he whispered lightly still holding her gaze.
“What?” she asked vaguely
“Lick your lips” he said staring at them almost possessively
She smiled. He reached up and ran a finger down her face and the slowly moved it across her bottom lip. She sighed longingly and he leaned into her. When their lips met he couldn’t stop himself from running his tongue across her bottom lip as she shuddered. She pressed herself again him as she deepened the kiss. He grabbed at her like he had never before. She wanted him. She needed him. She pushed back hastily as he gripped her arms.
“Jordan I can’t do this” she said breathlessly.
“Neither can I” he said dejectedly as he looked back down at the floor. She thought she saw tears in his eyes.
She was about to respond when the door opened. Jeff and Chad stood there grinning as if half expecting them to be in the middle of sex. She noticed the drop in Jeff's face as he looked from her to Jordan.
"Time to start man" Chad said and she could hear the disappointment in his voice.
Jordan got up with out a word, put out his cigarette and followed Chad out to the side stage entrance.
Bubba appeared and motioned for them to follow.
He put them in a spot on the corner of the stage where they had the best view and Kristy watched the excited girls waiting for the show to start. Jeff stood closer to the door hoping to avoid recognition.
Joe started the show and the fans weren’t disappointed. He did some old numbers and some new ones that Kristy had never heard before. He kept smiling and winking at her the entire time. For the last number Jordan came out to help him sing Cover Girl. The acoustic remake was one of her all time favorites. Joe moved over to where they were standing and Jeff nudged her playfully. She watched Joe look back at Jordan who was on the opposite side of the stage leaning into a crowd of girls singing. He gave Jeff a confused look and kept on.
When Jordan came back out for his set, it was like he was a different person. He was so full of energy moving from one dance move to the other. She couldn’t see the moodiness from earlier.
She watched him mesmerized and noted that he was moving better than she had ever seen. His energy on stage was electrifying. He did some really old numbers and she couldn't help the laugh that escaped her as Jeff caught her singing along. Chad kept looking in their direction as if waiting for her just to jump on stage and tackle Jordan any minute. She happened to lock eyes with Jordan several times and registered the shock in them when he quickly looked away. In the break before he went to the keyboards for the slow numbers, while he and Chad chatted up the crowd, Jeff looked over at her like he had just won the lottery. Almost like he was expecting something to happen. She held her breath when he sat down and began to play, she only released it when she realized that he wasn't playing anything that would irreversibly stir emotions inside her even though most of his music had some effect on her one way or the other. Jeff seemed to loose his excitement as Jordan played his way through the slow tunes. By the time he had finished and returned to center stage to rock out his new material Jeff was visibly pissed. Before the first number began she noticed the questioning look that Chad and Jeff exchanged across stage and wondered what was up. When Jordan finished the show with two of his most recent hits to top the charts, Kristy thought the place would explode from the noise. She stood back and looked around at the pack venue. It was wall to wall people on both levels. She smiled grimly to herself, she guessed she had a small part in this. She was lost in thought when a hand on her shoulder made her jump.
"Come on girle" Bubba said with a nod to the door where people with backstage passes were streaming through.
"Uh, I don't think so" she said waving him off "I really need to go"
His grip on her shoulder became stronger as he stared her down "Come on please" he said sternly as she watched Jeff disappear through the door over her shoulder.
She shrugged and allowed him to lead her back. She saw all the glances from the waiting fans she received when her and Jeff were admitted to an even larger room than before.
She looked around and spotted Joe, Chad and Jordan standing in the back behind a small table filled with their new press photos. She actually caught herself wanting one but laughed and shook her head when she realized how silly that would be of her. She looked over to the other corner where Jeff and Bubba stood and noticed that they were actually having a heated argument. Jeff was gesturing around angrily and one time pointed in her direction.
She stood back when one of the bouncers led in the first wave of fans for their pictures and autographs. She couldn't stop the tears from filling her eyes as she watched two young girls giggle with anticipation. Her heart almost broke open as she longed for her friends. They had once been those silly girls and she found herself wanting to walk over and impart some of the vast information she had come to know about fantasies with pop stars.
She turned and walked over to the quiet corner. She watched Jeff leave and resisted the urge to run after him. Bubba walked over with a smile.
"Enjoy the show" he said
"yeah it was great" she said with forced enthusiasm as she watched Jordan smile for a picture with a fan.
"they just keep getting bigger and bigger" he said looking around.
"yeah" she said absently as she watched Jordan kiss an exceptionally attractive girl on the cheek and smile beautifully for the picture. He engaged her in conversation as the others looked on expectantly. She watched him lean in to hear her comment and then throw his head back in a laugh. The girl put her hand lightly on his arm as she laughed at his response.
What in the hell? She thought as fury and a deep hurt coursed through her veins. He was flirting with another fan when he knew she was in the room. She felt sick and had to resist another urge just to run out. Bubba noticed where she was looking and stepped into her line of vision as she saw the girl start to right something on a piece of paper for him.
Jeff walked back in almost stomping and looked over at the table in disgust before joining her at her side.
"I think we need to go" he said in an angry tone
"Jeff what’s wrong" she said curiously as she registered the frustration on his face
"Nothing" he said shortly
"should I say bye then" she said looking over to the guys who were busy with a new group of eager fans.
"If you want" he shrugged and she could tell his was way beyond upset.
She decided to show that she could be the better person and at least be polite so she walked past the line of anxious fans and around behind the table.
"well guys, we are going so I figured I would say bye and wish you good luck" she said looking around at them
Finally Jordan met her gaze and a pleading look came across them that almost made her scream in frustration. If he wanted her to stay then he would have to ask. She held his gaze trying to make him see that she would stay if he would only reach out but he closed his eyes slowly and turned away. She felt the tears well again and she had to blink rapidly to keep them from spilling over.
"Bye girl" Chad said with a half hug
"Bye" Jordan croaked out and she could tell that he was shaken.
When he turned from her Bubba placed an arm around her shoulders and lead her out of the room with Jeff behind them. When they were out in the corridor she saw the fan that Jordan had just interacted with leaning up against the wall talking to the bouncer as if she was waiting on them. The sight shook her so much she couldn't hold back the tidal wave of emotions any more. She leaned into Bubba's massive body and let the sobs over take her. After a few minutes of sobbing almost soundlessly the gentle pats from Bubba on her back and Jeff's rubbing her hair soothed her enough to look up.
"Kristy listen" Bubba began
Jeff cut him off in an almost vicious tone "Look Bubba she doesn't need this right now, I should just take her home" Jeff said taking her up into his arms.
"I think I need to explain" he said pleadingly as Jeff started to lead her away
"I think that actions speak for themselves" Jeff said heatedly as he lead her through a back stage door
Once they were outside Kristy could no longer hold up her false calm and she collapsed on the damp ground crying. Jeff knelt over her trying to sooth her with gentle sounds and touches.
"get off me" she finally screamed at him angrily
"Kristy, I am so sorry" he said as she finally got up
"sorry, sorry, you are sorry, he should be the one who's sorry" she said angrily
"No I should, I shouldn't have brought you here tonight" he said taking her shoulders "I thought, well I was under the impression that things would be different" he said looking back at the door they had exited.
"Thanks Jeff but some things are just not worth fighting for anymore" she said shaking her head at the ground
"Kristy, I have learned over the years that sometimes the things you fight the hardest for turn out not to be worth it" he said rubbing at her back. The gravity of his statement left her gasping for air that had seemed to disappear. This was what she needed to know and now that she knew that she had never really been anything to him, she desperately missed her ignorance. Her mind swam with painful memories of everything they had said and done to each other. She had actually thought that if she left him he would coming running back to her, but she was so wrong. At this point she had never been more wrong in her life. Anger welled inside of her at everything she had endured just to be apart of him. She gritted her teeth hard to keep from screaming. Jeff's gentle touches no longer were soothing, they suddenly became annoying. She was not a child and crying over some man was not going to get her where she wanted to be in life. Now that she had all the answers she just need to pick up and move on.
Joe can running out the back door and stopped to gape at the scene before him.
“Kristy” he said reaching out for her
She jerked away from him. "I just need to be alone now" she gasped as she turned to leave the alley way
"Kristy let me explain" he called after her
“Leave her alone” Jeff said heatedly and ran after her.
“Are you ok” he said panting to catch up with her brisk pace
"yeah I will be fine, I will call you tomorrow" she said glancing up the side walk for a cab
He was jogging up beside her as one pulled to the curb "I will call you later to make sure ok" he said as he opened the door for her
"Just remember you have three days" she said to his face as she closed the door
"Do you ever stop working" he said with a laugh as the cab drove off
