A/N: Okay, so this chapter is a long one, but with a lot of stuff packed in. The last part (from the asterisks on) of it is taken (for the most part) loosely from Emo_Koala's fic, as she reached this part first. We chatted about the plot and such and trust with the story, so don't think we're thieves. Anyways, here's the chapter and I should have the next one up fairly quickly with the trial results (also taken from Cat, she's the law student, I'm not). So *hugs* and enjoy! :)

The trial had been going on for almost a week already and Rebecca was more than feeling the effects of it. She hated the entire process of the trial, hated having to get out and go to the court everyday for hours on end, when most of the time nothing happened aside from having nasty things from her past pulled up and drug out before the entire jury. Every morning or afternoon they would be forced to sit in the courtroom for several hours a day listening to the opposition trying their hardest to make them look as bad as they could.
Pete had been forced to open up about some of his most hidden things, as well as the nude pictures scandal. Ryan’s relationship with his father had been torn apart and picked as far as could be done. Cat had been forced to talk about her school days and the horror of the accident that had first put her in the hospital years ago. Rebecca had been forced to openly talk about her disastrous relationship with Aiden and the consequences of that, which had rattled her more than anything else. The opposition had even made others discuss some of the less than appealing facets of their lives, despite it having little to nothing to do with the case.
Rebecca had spent most of the time when not in court in her room to herself. She just hated to think of having to see everyone’s reactions to her. She felt like the cause of the lawsuit, and she hated to think of how they might treat her differently because of that. Not to mention the biggest reason she stayed locked in her room, the revelations around her relationship with Aiden.
She had kept it a secret for so long, with only Pete and then much more recently Patrick knowing about it. Spencer had known of a good portion of it as well, but not the entire nasty story. And she had wanted it to stay that way until she was ready to reveal it. But now everyone knew all the sordid details of that period of her life. She could see the pity in their eyes when they looked at her after the revelation in court and she detested them for it. She had survived that part of her life with only a few scars that weren’t on the outside, and she hated to be reminded of it.
Most of the time, Rebecca simply stayed in bed going between fits of anger at anyone who crossed her mind to being reduced to tears. She had heard Pete and Patrick talking about her as she had left to use the restroom, and she had sat hidden on the top stair, biting her finger to keep from making any noise as the tears ran down her cheeks.
“Pete, I’m really worried about Reby. She barely comes out of her room, and when she does she doesn’t speak and goes right back to her room. She looks as if she’s waiting to die. I know she was devastated when she was forced to talk about what happened with Aiden, but now I’m seriously worried that she might hurt herself.”
“I know, alright. I live here too. This is my house, she is my sister. I don’t know what you think I can do about her hiding away. It’s just what she does when something big happens. After Aiden ... well you know, she locked herself away for an entire week. The only one who managed to get her out of the room was Spencer, and even that took a huge amount of work and time. There was a lot of screaming and slamming stuff around, and from what I know of it, a few hurt egos in the process. But eventually she came around. You just have to give her time.”
“And risk having her do something to herself? Pete, I’m scared that she might actually try to hurt herself. It wouldn’t be the first time, you know.”
“Are you trying to say something about Becca?! God, I would have thought that you of all people would have better understanding for her. You are still her boyfriend. Just give her a little time and she will be fine. Becca is stronger than you seem to be giving her credit for.”
“I wasn’t --- Just nevermind, Pete. I was only saying that because I’m worried about her. It can’t be healthy for her to stay locked up in her room all day and night, refusing anyone who tries to talk to her. She’s barely even eating. And we both know that isn’t healthy. I’m just really worried about her.”
Rebecca could tell that despite the heated words just a moment earlier, that they were still close friends and she slowly stood and crept back into her room, relocking the door as she did. She walked over to her bed and curled back up on it, pulling the fairground bear that Aiden had won for her on one of their first dates, close to her. Normally the bear stayed up on her dresser where she would always have the reminder of when things were good with Aiden, but ever since the trial, she had taken to sleeping with the bear. It was beginning to look like an actual stuffed animal rather than a collectable that had been in storage since purchase. She turned her attention to the door as she heard footsteps outside followed by a light knock that she could tell without asking was Patrick.
“Patrick, please just leave me alone.”
“Reby, why don’t you come down and watch a movie? Or at least open the door and let someone else in there with you. We’re all worried about you.”
“Don’t bother yourselves. Just leave me alone. I think I’ll just take a nap.”
“Reby you have to eat something before the closing arguments.”
“Great, Patrick, remind me that I get to hear if I’m innocent or guilty in a few hours. I’ll really be able to eat knowing my life is about to be decided by people I don’t know in just a few measly hours.”
Rebecca sarcastically spat back at him, bursting into tears at the mere thought of all the court troubles being finished in a few mere hours. She turned her head into her pillow as she sobbed, muffling the sound and clutching the bear tightly in her grasp. She could hear Patrick on the other side of the door pacing and talking to what she only could guess to be his phone. She managed to calm down for a moment long enough to walk over to her desk and open the small hidden mini-fridge she had bought one summer while Pete was first getting the band set up and such, where it was a disaster area everywhere else in the house and she had stayed to her room mostly for safety. She pulled out a bottle of soda and went back over to the bed and curled up at the head of the bed with the bear closely tucked to her side.
She opened the soda and contemplated turning on her television to watch something, but then decided against it. Most of the things she watched on television were either sappy shows or various music channels to keep up on the boys. The sappy shows would only make her feel worse, and the music channels would probably mention something about the trial in the news portions. So she merely took her iPod and headphones and started to listen to music, but found that too wasn’t a good distraction, as most of the bands on her iPod were of friends/family.
*** Just as she was about to give up and turn on her music and listen to the classical playlist, Rebecca turned to the door at the sound of the dogs barking from downstairs. That meant visitors, which inevitably meant another assault on her to come out. So she put her iPod down on her bedside table, curling up on her side with the bear tucked in at her side, trying to ignore all the other sounds coming from the other side of the door. Although when she heard Spencer’s voice in the hallway, she cheered up a little, but not enough to come out of her room.
“Beckanne?”
“Please Spence, not now.”
She hated her voice for having the annoying weepy sound that only came when she had been crying. And she could tell from the sounds on the other side of the door that Spencer was not going away. Although at the sounds of what she knew to be something trying to pick the lock on her door, she got up and walked over to the door, as she knew that Spencer would eventually get it unlocked, as they had used his uncanny knack for picking locks on several occasions to enact some of their various plots. She reached the door just as Spencer managed to get it unlocked.
“What the hell do you want?”
“I want to see to it that you haven't tried killing yourself or anything. Because it seems to me, that you think all of this is your fault.”
Rebecca glared at Spencer as he walked into her room and closed the door behind him. She didn’t relent as he told her he was merely wanting to make sure she was still alright. Yeah, that’s what everyone else said. Although he had hit the nail on the head with his assumption that she thought everything was her fault. Because it was. At that thought, she felt the tears coming on again, and she rushed back over to her bed again, muffling the newest wave of sobs in her pillows.
“I could have kept my temper at bay, I could --- “
She felt the side of the bed lean down and then the reassuring feel on Spencer rubbing light circles on her back. She knew that he worried about her, like everyone else, but she was stuck in her rut with what looked to be no escape, at least until the end of the trial.
“And Cat could have let you get hit by the car instead. Or Ry could have kept dating Amber, rather than think again about breaking up with her to date Cat. Look, no matter how much we re-think the situation, things happen for a reason. We just have to accept things the way they are, regardless of what harms may come along the way.”
Rebecca turned and looked up at Spencer, trying to get him to understand why she was so pessimistic and upset. Normally she would have just shrugged off the criticism and continued along her way, but this line of attack had really wounded her.
“But Spence, you saw the stories, and you saw the paperwork --- “
“And I also saw how quick Cat was to ship her father from England to help us out here. Don't you see, whether we like it or not, we really have to work on this. The thing is, if we don't do it as a team, we'll surely fail. Now Becca, do you really want to fail at this? I know you, if you failed at anything, you would surely blow a gasket.”
Rebecca laughed a little at Spencer’s comments about her freaking out if she were to fail at anything. It was true, of course, but it seemed to overlook the fact that this really wasn’t in her hands. She was at the mercy of twelve strangers on this matter. She looked down at her hands, if for nothing else but to escape Spencer’s gaze.
“No, I just us to get over this ... In one piece.”
This seemed to have been the answer Spencer was looking for, or at the least hoping for, because he nodded with a bit of what seemed like a smile.
“Okay, then if that's what you want, you have to hang in there. I mean, from the looks of it, Pete and Ivy are about to skin each other alive, Patrick.... Well Patrick is really starting to get hit hard about what you're going through. Ry and Cat both look like they're starving themselves, and I think Cat's health is on the fritz lately.”
As Spencer mentioned how everyone else was taking the trial and such, Becca felt her stomach drop. Pete and Ivy were having troubles wasn’t exactly news as she had heard the recent screaming fights they had started having. Pete was taking the trial too much to heart according to Ivy, and Ivy was being insensitive and callous in Pete’s current opinion. She had been afraid that Patrick would take things roughly, and the argument she had overheard was proof of it. Hearing that Ryan and Cat were both neglecting themselves made her feel bad. She had known that Ryan had the habit of not eating when upset, and she had seen a similar sort of pattern with Cat the times they had shared a room while visiting the guys. Although hearing that Cat’s health was on the line made Becca worried. She glanced up at Spencer, worried.
“What?!”
“Don't say anything. I heard her talking to Ry last night behind closed doors. She's pregnant, and it doesn't look good. They're not sure if her body's taking it well, especially with the stress of this case. She's not going to say anything to anyone but Ry until it's over, the case I mean. And trust me, she's an emotional wreck as it is. I think she need her best friend Becca, and seriously we need you for her too. I mean, guys aren't really good at that sort of thing ...”
At the news of Cat being pregnant, Rebecca felt her mouth hang open a little. Of course she didn’t think that Ryan and Cat were the most innocent of couples, but to be expecting a baby? That was certainly news to her. Although to hear that it wasn’t looking good for Cat and the pregnancy, Becca covered her mouth with a hand. By the way Spencer was talking, it was as if they were expecting Cat to lose the baby, and that would be worse than devastating. She also knew that if Cat were to lose the baby, she would feel to blame herself, because of the trial which had caused all the stress on Cat.
As the large clock from the hall started to chime, both Spencer and Rebecca jumped. By the time it was chiming, she knew that she would have to get ready for the closing arguments of the trial. She hated to think that within a short amount of time she would be hearing if she was innocent, but she would have to start getting ready to be presentable.
“Oh God, if I don't get back there soon, I won't be able to get ready in time.”
She nodded, following him to the door, biting her lip as her mind started to work on what all she would need to do before the trial. She tried to keep her mind off the fact that she might be found guilty in Amber’s twisted little plot of revenge on them all.
“Um well, if I can get ready in time, I think I might show up, just not making any promises, okay?”
“Just as long as I know you won't try anything. The world would be a sad place if you did.”
She smiled as Spencer gave her a light kiss on the forehead. Although she could see a bit of hesitation on his part, and she knew that it was her fault that the flicker of hesitation was there, but she tried not to dwell on it. She turned around to start gathering things to grab a shower so she could start getting ready for the trial when she heard a light tap on her still open door.
“Um, is it safe...?”
Rebecca turned and smiled seeing Patrick standing in the doorway, looking worried. She could tell by his expression that he was worried that she would be upset with him for coming in and would refuse to speak to him again, locking everyone out again. She grabbed a towel and turned back to him with a smile.
“For now, but you ought to scoot so that I can catch a quick shower, to go to this thing.”
She could see him visibly sigh in relief. His face returned its normal jovial smile, and he leaned lightly against the doorframe. It was then that she saw first hand how hard he had taken her self-imprisonment, and she felt a spark of guilt that she had worried him so. She giggled as he wiped his forehead, loving how good it felt to laugh again, as she had been so deprived lately. She noticed that he was only half dressed in one of the suits that he had been wearing to the trial, and giggled as she walked back over to the door, towel and bathrobe in hand.
“Now shoo, finish getting ready so that I can.”
Rebecca couldn’t resist giving him a quick kiss as she walked past him heading towards the bathroom with the first smile she had worn since the trial had started.
