"So how's the birthday going?" Lyndsey smiled as she and Mary joined Kelly and Carrie at their usual table.
"Awesome," Kelly nodded, accepting the brownie Mary handed her from her plate. "So have either of you heard from Ash?"
Mary turned to Lyndsey who shook her head.
"That's weird. She wasn't in class this morning."
"Maybe she's not feeling well," Mary suggested.
"Maybe," Kelly frowned. "Y'all don't think I was mean to her the other day, do y'all?"
"When?"
"When I said I wanted to wait to do something until we could all do it together."
"Not at all," Lyndsey replied. "I mean, that's a resonable request, especially since all of us were right there. If anything it was rude of her to bring it up in front of the rest of us. It was kinda like she was putting herself above the rest of us, you know?"
"I'm sure she didn't mean it like that."
The other three girls avoided her gaze.
"Y'all..." Kelly rolled her eyes. "Come on, now. I know Ashley's been acting a little weird lately, but she wouldn't outright push y'all to the side like that."
"Do you not remember calling her a bitch not too long ago at this very table?" Lyndsey raised an eyebrow.
"Well, I'd expect her to outright push Carrie aside," Kelly allowed with a frown. "But not the two of y'all."
"Thanks," Carrie laughed.
Kelly squeezed her knee gently under the table.
"Things have changed, KC," Mary shook her head. "She's changed."
"Things were rough for a while there, but I think she's trying to fix all that," she felt Carrie's hand take hers under the table, holding it there.
"I still don't understand why things ever got rough in the first place," Lyndsey noted. "And for that matter why would she outright push Carrie aside?"
"Yea," Mary nodded. "I mean, she's just as much one of us now as Ashley is."
Carrie felt herself blushing.
"Still gotta work on the shy thing, though," Lyndsey laughed.
Kelly smiled, studying Carrie's pink tinged cheeks, "She's getting there."
"But back to Ashley..." Mary said. "She's been so all over the place lately."
"I don't know. I don't feel right talking about her when she's not here," Kelly sighed. "Let's talk about something else?"
"Like what?"
"Like the fact that the lunch lady totally wears a wig," she smiled.
"You think?" Lyndsey turned to the lunch line.
"Definitely. What other eighty year old you know has a red afro?" she shrugged.
"I don't know," Lyndsey shrugged. "I always just thought she had really good genes."

"So how sucky is it to have to work on your birthday?" Carrie asked as they walked to her car after school.
"Not too sucky," Kelly admitted. "It's not like I'd be able to do anything anyway if I wasn't working. I'd be stuck at home...thinking about what I've done."
Carrie laughed, "And what is it that you did again?"
"I let your charm blind me and allowed you to talk me into sleeping through class," she nodded.
"Is that so?"
"Yep."
"So, it's all on me."
"Yep."
"Well, ok, maybe it is my fault," Carrie agreed.
"And you aren't even the one punished."
"Yea, I owe your mom big for not telling my parents. Like majorly big. Who's standing by my car?"
"Huh?" Kelly turned to look. "Oh my God."
"Is that Ashley? Who's the guy?"
"Oh my God!" Kelly squealed, running to Carrie's car.
Carrie watched as the older guy smiled, opening his arms to the short Texan, pulling her into a tight hug. She felt her stomach twinge slightly as she walked the remaining distance to her vehicle. "Hey Ashley," she nodded, shortly.
"Hey Carrie," Ashley smiled at her frown.
"Who's the guy?"
"Jason."
"Jason," she resisted the urge to scoff at his name.
"Care, come here," Kelly waved her over to where she was standing with one arm around the guy who's long hair was pulled back into a pony tail.
Carrie walked to her, forcing a smile.
"Care, this is Jason...this is my brother," Kelly beamed.
"Your brother?" Carrie felt herself relax.
"Yep."
"I thought he lived in Alaska," Carrie looked at him confusedly.
"Like I'd miss my sister's eighteenth birthday," he smiled.
Carrie laughed softly, shaking her head. She had no idea how she hadn't recognized that smile.
"What's so funny?" Kelly asked curiously.
"Nothing," Carrie smiled, holding out her hand to Jason. "It's really nice to meet you. Kelly's told me a lot about you."
"It's the price I pay being the cool older brother," he nodded, shaking her hand. "So who's up for something to eat? My treat."
"Oh, I can't," Kelly pouted. "I have work."
"As always," Jason chuckled. "Alright, then. After work, we'll go. Carrie, you game?"
"Oh, she can't," Ashley interrupted. "Her mom doesn't like for her to be out late."
"No, it's a weekend," Kelly shook her head. "She'll just come home with me tonight."
Ashley's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Cool," Jason nodded. "Ok, you're ready to get going Ashley?"
"Y'all rode together?" Kelly asked.
"Yea, she wanted to surprise you," he shrugged, giving her another hug. "See you tonight?"
"Duh," she pushed him away playfully.
"Happy birthday," Ashley smiled.
"Thanks, Ash," Kelly hugged her as well. "This was really, really sweet."
"Oh, it was nothing. I didn't want to get you some little gift that you'd never use or something silly like flowers that will just die in a few days, you know? So, I called Jason up, and he said he was planning on coming down here anyway soon, so voila."
"Right on," Kelly nodded. "Well, I have to be heading to work. So, I'll see y'all tonight."
"Ok. Bye Carrie," Ashley beamed.
"Bye Ashley," Carrie's jaw clenched as she got into her car, closing the door firmly.
Kelly walked around to the other side, getting in as well.
Carrie took a deep breath.
"I'm sure she didn't know y'all got me flowers," Kelly tried to soothe, feeling the other blonde's agitation.
"Of course she knew, Kell," Carrie sighed. "That's how she is. I know you don't want to believe it because she's your best friend, but it's true."
Kelly frowned.
"I know, I know," Carrie reached over, taking her hand. She quickly looked around the parking lot before she brought it to her lips, kissing it softly. "I'm sorry. I know it's your birthday, and your brother's here, so I'm not gonna make a big deal out of it."
"Thanks Care," she smiled softly.
"Can you just..."
"Next time she does something like that, I'll tell her something," Kelly assured. "Lyndsey and Mary were right--she shouldn't be treating you any differently than the rest of them."
Carrie wanted to point out the fact that the flowers were from her as well as Lyndsey and Mary, so in reality Ashley was taking a shot at all three of them, but she kept her promise and refrained. Instead, she kissed her hand once more as she pulled out of the parking lot, keeping their fingers laced, as she rested their hands on her lap.

"Kelly," Jessica gave a small smile as Kelly walked into the movie theater.
"Hey," Kelly nodded back, clocking in.
"Can we talk for a moment?"
"Sure," Kelly followed her into the break room.
Jessica stopped in the middle of the floor, turning around to face her. "I, uh...I've been meaning to talk to you for a while now. I know I need to apologize for the way I reacted to the whole Ashley situation, I just wasn't sure how to do it, so...happy birthday," she held out an envelope.
"Aw, Jebbie, you didn't have to get me something," Kelly replied. "We were both a little wrong, I think."
"Kelly, you've been my friend longer than Ashley has, and even if that wasn't the case, I was trying to hold you to some impossible standard. You can't make everybody happy, you know? Even though, I know you definitely would if you could. I just...I was wrong. I know that, and I'm sorry."
"It's ok," Kelly smiled, giving her a hug. "I'm just glad we're good now. I missed my Jebbie."
Jessica laughed, ruffling her hair, "Well, here, this is still for you. I've been working on this for a while, even before our argument, so don't think of it as an apology, just think of it as a birthday gift."
"Alright," Kelly accepted the envelope. She opened it up, taking out a sheet of paper. She glanced over it quickly, "Is this...is this what I think it is?"
"What do you think it is?"
"Did you buy me studio time?" Kelly looked up at her in awe.
"You can't really go out to L.A. to become a singer without a few demos, right?"
"Oh my God...Jebbie," Kelly hugged her again. "Thank you so much. This is so amazing. Please tell me this didn't cost too much."
"No, don't even worry about it," Jessica shook her head. "A friend of mine from college used to work part time there. It wasn't too bad."
Kelly grinned broadly as she read over the paper again that contained the date and time she would be in the studio, "Dude..."
Jessica laughed softly, "I'm glad you like it."
Kelly shook her head, still smiling from ear to ear, "An actual studio..."
Jessica gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, "You're gonna do great."
"Thank you so much," she repeated, looking up at her.
"So how's the rest of your birthday going?"
"Good. Jason's here."
"Oh yea? That's cool."
"Yea, Ashley called him. That was her gift."
"Ashley?" Jessica raised an eyebrow. "Y'all are talking?"
"Yea, sure," she nodded. "You didn't know that?"
"No," Jessica shook her head. "I didn't think...I was under the impression that she wasn't ready yet."
"Ready?"
"Yea, I don't know, I guess I was wrong," she shrugged, avoiding her gaze for a moment.
"Oh, hey we're going eat tonight with Jason. You wanna come? You should invite Boo."
"Nah, I can't. I'm working a double, but y'all have fun."
"Alright," Kelly agreed. "I'm gonna save you a piece of cake, and come bring it when we're done."
"Sounds great," Jessica nodded with a smile, following her out of the break room.
