Celebs featured: Galadriel Stineman, Ashley Johnson, Ava Sambora
Galadriel is a nerd, if her parents being big Tolkien fans didn’t already tip you off. It wasn’t surprising that she was friends with Ashley. She played a live-action version of one of Ashley’s animated characters and played a girl named Ashley in a video game. There was a gaming room on the resort that they liked to frequent. It was laid out like a smaller version of the indoor theater with a projection booth aimed at a screen. Here, a PC was connected to the projector, and wireless controllers were used instead of a keyboard.
Ava didn’t play video games, but found no harm in watching Ashley and Galadriel take turns playing Batman: Arkham Asylum.
The first question Ava had was “What’s with Catwoman’s outfit?”
Ashley and Galadriel looked at her, slightly puzzled.
“She’s a thief, right? How is that cleavage suppose to help in robberies?”
“Trust us, Ava,” spoke Galadriel. “That is not a hill worth dying on.”
Ava wanted to ask what she meant by that, but ultimately decided against it.
Then the opening credits played over the following exchange of dialogue. Batman tells Hugo Strange that he “won’t get away with this,” to which Hugo Strange insists, “I already have.”
“Wow,” Ava muttered, “that is some really cliche dialogue.”
Ashley turned to Ava and said “Well, sometimes you can overlook that.”
Ava couldn’t help pointing out things. After Bruce Wayne had his head smashed against a monitor, beaten with rifles and punched multiple times, and hit with a lead pipe, why is a kick to the head what finally knocks him out cold? Why didn’t Bruce Wayne just sneak his way into Arkham City instead of letting himself get captured? How is it fair that most of the enemies Batman fights are people who don’t have armor and get left to lie on the ground with potentially serious injuries? What's the point of those augmented reality training exercises?
Later, when Batman was about to take Ra’s al Ghul’s test, Talia told him, “Destiny will decide your fate.”
Ava asked, “Hey, uh, aren’t destiny and fate the same thing?”
Galadriel sighed and paused the game.
“Alright, listen, Ava. Every point you make is valid, but every point has already been made.”
Ashley chimed in, “This is a big budget game based on a popular IP. Believe us when we say everyone has already nitpicked the game. But the truth is that it doesn’t really matter.”
“You don’t think this is just accepting low effort?” Ava questioned.
“Well,” said Galadriel, “it’s not entirely low effort. The rest of the game clearly had a lot of detail put into it. And it’s like Ashley said, you can overlook the smaller points. To most gamers and comic book fans, they’re not dealbreakers.”
“The test of good entertainment isn’t how many flaws it has,” Ashley concluded. “It’s whether the product can make you not care.”
Galadriel handed the controller over to Ashley.
“You wanna take the fight with Mr. Freeze?”
Ashley smiled, “I would be honored.”
