Chapter 48
The Friday after Thanksgiving - late evening
*********************
James was worried. Something was going on with David. He’d been behaving oddly all evening. Of course, it could be the drink. James hadn’t been counting but he knew David had had several glasses of wine at dinner and he was on his second brandy now. He realised in the few weeks they’d been together, he’d never seen David drink more than the odd beer. He had no idea what David’s capacity for alcohol was or what kind of drunk he’d become: affable, exuberant, belligerent, morose…
He glanced across at David who was currently sitting in the armchair nearest to the fireplace. David was staring into the fire, apparently ignoring the conversation all around him. Morose, it was then…
After the children had been put to bed the family had spent the rest of the evening playing charades and chatting. The conversation had ranged from how the children were getting on at school, through Hollywood gossip to politics - both local and international. David clearly had little interest in the latter whilst James had enjoyed an animated debate on American foreign policy with Jon and Beth. He’d started to wonder if vie views were embarrassing David but it wasn’t as if the discussion had become particularly heated. Although he found himself in general agreement with much of what Beth had to say, he and Jon had differing opinions on many of the issues discussed but none of them were in danger of falling out over their differences. The discussion had remained friendly throughout. But, perhaps, James conceded it wasn’t polite to disagree with his hosts. He’d apologise to David later.
“Refill, anyone?” Dave asked, offering the brandy bottle to Jon who shook his head. Beth took it from him and poured a generous measure into her own glass and topped up David’s.
Bo and Patti had been finishing off winewine left over from dinner whilst David, Jon and Beth had switched to the brandy. James was thankful no one had pressed him to join them. He and Dave had contented themselves with coffee. James knew it was silly of him to refuse the occasional drink. After all, what harm could one glass of wine do? But his father’s words still rung in his ears as though he’d only heard them yesterday, “All who imbibe the Devil’s brew will join him in Hell.” Of course, after the visit with his mother he now had another reason to expect to end up in Hell. Maybe he had nothing to lose any more. Perhaps he would join them all in a drink tomorrow…
“Well, I don’t know about the rest of you but I can hardly keep my eyes open,” Patti announced. “I’m off to bed. I’ll see you all in the morning. Goodnight, Darlings.”
“Me too,” Dave said, standing up to offer his arm to his wife “Ni “Night, Mom… Dad,” Bo and David chorused.
“Sweet dreams,” Beth added.
“Breakfast at eight for those planning on riding the range with me,” Dave reminded everyone as he and Patti left the room arm in arm. David had been right. It was obvious from the way Patti and Dave looked at one another, they were still very much in love. James was conscious of the fact that David hadn’t looked at him like that once all evening. Something was wrong…
“Are you coming with us, James?” Bo asked. “You could take Mom’s horse. She’s staying behind… more baking…”
“Er…” James began. How could he put this and not look a fool. “I’ m afraid I’ve never learned to ride.”
“We could teach you,” Bo said, excitedly. “Couldn’t we, David?”
“Oh, no, I’d slow you down,” James said. “I wouldn’t want to spoil your fun. Please… you go ahead without me. I’ll keep Patti company. Maybe I can learn to cook.”
“Are you sure?” Bo asked. “About the riding, I mean, not the cooking…”
“To tell you the truth,” James began, “I’m kinda jet-lagged. I was looking forward to sleeping in.”
“Okay, then, but if you change your mind…”
Bo stood up.
“You do know you’d be welcome to join us, James, don’t you?”
He nodded and stood up allowing himself to be pulled into a hug. She kissed him on the cheek and wished him goodnight.
“Goodnight everybody,” Jon said as Bo took his hand. “See you tomorrow.”
With that Beth bounced up out of her chair and started toward him. As she launched herself at him, James felt David’s arm slip possessively around his waist. He hadn’t even noticed he’d gotten out of his chair.
“Goodnight, Little Brother,” she said, smiling in David’s direction. “Goodnight, James.”
“You too, Beth,” David said.
Before James knew what was happening, Beth had planted a kiss on his mouth.
“Sweet dreams,” she giggled and dashed from the room.
*****************
“I wish she wouldn’t call me that…” David muttered as Beth disappeared into the hall.
“I think it’s kind of sweet…” James began.
“She knows I hate it…”
“Why didn’t you tell me about her?” James asked once he was sure she was out of earshot.
David frowned.
“Beth… She’s a real live wire.”
“You say that as though it’s a good thing,” David said, removing his arm from James’ waist.
“I do. I think she’s great,” James said. “Nothing like I’d expected from what you told me about her… and she has no idea how attractive she is, does she?”
“You think she’s attractive?”
“Well, yeah. Don’t tell me you don’t.”
“She’s my sister. I can’t say I’ve ever really noticed…”
“Well, take it from me she is. If I was straight, I’d be making a move on her…”
“Are you sure you haven’t already? You two hardly took your eyes off one another during dinner…”
“What?”
“And did you really have to spend all that time in the kitchen with her? How long can it take to load a dishwasher?”
“David, I… What do you…? You’re kidding… David, you are kidding, aren’t you? You couldn’t possibly think I’d…”
“Hit on my sister?”
“But, David…”
“You don’t just find her attractive; you’re attracted to her!” David exclaimed, starting for the hall.
“No, I’m not.”
James followed David into the hall and grabbed his arm to try and stop him.
“Yes, you are,” David replied, shaking him off.
“Well, who wouldn’t be? She’s charming, intelligent, witty…”
“Thought so,” David said grabbing his coat the the rack and shrugging it on.
“David, wait! I only meant… Please… It doesn’t mean anything. You know I love you. I’m not going to hit on your sister… Where are you going?”
“To walk the dogs.”
“David, please…”
With that David headed for the studio. James watched as he opened the door and both dogs rushed to greet him. He wanted to follow but his heart was in his mouth. He didn’t have the courage. He took refuge in the kitchen instead. He could make a start on the pots and pans.
Shit! What had he done? He’d just been making small talk with Beth. Why on Earth did he have to go and say he found her attractive? He wasn’t even sure he would have hit on her before he met David. Okay, who was he kidding? Of course, he would. She was exactly his type. But that was then. The world had turned topsy-turvy in the last couple of months. It didn’t matter how hot a woman was now, or a guy, there was only one person he wanted to be with… David.
