When the last fan left the room Jordan overturned the table in front of him and press photos went everywhere. He screamed frustrated as he threw his empty beer bottle against the wall where it shattered into a million pieces. He dropped to his knees and held his hands over his head as he sobbed.
"Why, Why did this have to fucking happen" he screamed as he looked up and pounded his fists on his legs.
Chad approached him cautiously looking around to make sure there was nothing else that could be thrown. He knelt down beside him and grabbed his arm.
"J, look it was for the best you know, just think what could have happened if we didn't find out what was going on" he said softly as Jordan visibly shook from anger
Bubba came over "yeah he's right if we didn't find out that Evelyn was having you watched then this could have been a bigger mess" he said gently patting his head.
Joe came running back in panting “I couldn’t catch her” he said as he gaze fell on Jordan.
Jordan visibly shook as he lowered down to rest his elbows on his knees.
"I am just so tired" Jordan said wiping at his now swollen eyes "I am so fucking tired of all of this" he said sending the press photos lying all around him flying with a swipe of his hand.
"Jordan it can't be helped" Chad said "It will all be over with soon and you can go back to the way it was" he finished
"Go back, go back" Jordan screamed at him "are you fucking kidding me, you can never just go back" he said getting to his feet. "I am just so fucking tired of all of this" he said again to the floor.
"Jordan, like Chad said it can't be helped" Bubba added with a pat of his back
"You guys don't understand" Jordan said with a laugh that was not even close to humorous "I am tired of all of it" he said snatching up a press photo off the floor "I don't want to be Jordan Knight any more" he said ripping it in half and tossing the pieces haphazardly.
Joe reached out for his arm as he got up to leave. Jordan threw it off and shot him a look of mingled misery and fury.
Chad and Bubba looked at each other in shock as Jordan stomped out of the room and slammed the door.
Chad raced after him not sure where he was going to go. He held back when he saw him heading for the stage. He walked to the side entrance and had to swallow the lump in his throat that rose when he saw him sit down at the keyboard and begin to play. He let him play a little while and he watched the emotion run through his face. After a few minutes he walked across the stage clapping.
"Why on earth wouldn't you want to be someone with talent like that" Chad said
Jordan banged his hands down on the keys "You just don't get it do you" he said with an angry smirk "what’s the point" he said sliding his hands up the keyboard.
"what do you mean what’s the point" Chad said walking over to him
"what’s the point of all of this" Jordan said motioning around "the music, the fans, the fame, what is it really worth" he finished with a challenging stare
"its worth everything" Chad said almost reverently
"see that is where your wrong my friend" Jordan said pushing to his feet "all of this isn't worth shit if you don't have someone that makes it mean something" he finished with another long swipe of the keys
"what are you saying" Chad said in a scared tone
"I don't know anymore" Jordan said passing the mic stand back and forth between his hands "I just don't know if this is what I want any more" he said as he watched it move almost hypnotically
"you have to be fucking kidding me, just when we were getting back on top" Chad said almost in anger
"and look at what that has cost" Jordan said walking over to him
"so are you telling me its over" Chad said with emotion
"I don't know what I am telling you" Jordan said as he jumped down off stage. He turned to look back up at Chad. "all I know is that one of the things that made it worth it and gave everything meaning for me just got her heart broken and I don't know if I can ever find a way to put it back together, so what I telling you is" Jordan said as he turned to walk up the isle "you just better hope she thinks its worth it" he said as he pushed through the venue exit doors.
Bubba caught him as he walked toward the entrance. "don't go out there, there are people still hanging around"
"I need a walk" Jordan said running his hands through his hair nervously
"I know you do man but go out the back and take a cab to somewhere that you can walk in peace" he said handing him a slip of paper. Jordan slid it in his back pocket as he walked to the back doors. He held up his cell phone and shook it toward Bubba as if to let him know how to catch him if he need him.
"and quit scaring Chad" Bubba said with a laugh as he pushed out the doors.
When he got in the cab he opened the torn page and it revealed a neatly printed address. He excitedly told the numbers to the cabby. After a fifteen minute ride the cabby pulled up at a somewhat shabby row of apartment buildings. The ones facing the street had small balconies that over looked the weather worn park. Over the tree tops you could see the bright lights of the city blink on and off. He got out and paid the driver. Not knowing really what he was doing and only half remembering that he probably was being followed he sat on a bench across the street from the building and stared intently at the glowing windows. He wondered which one belonged to her. The apartment on the top floor in the corner was still brightly lit and he could see a faint fog over one of the windows. As he watched someone from inside opened the window, he could see the steam rise out into the cool night air. When the breeze stirred he caught the faintest smell of oranges and felt his heart seize with the memory of how her hair smelled when he buried his face into it. He also caught the soft sounds of piano music as it played in the night. He couldn't be sure that was her, so he decided to watch for a while. After a few moment of moving around he saw the balcony doors open and she stepped out, in a worn button up shirt and flannel pants. The bands that had been gripping his heart tightened as he recognized his long lost shirt and the faded flannel pajama pants that she had been wearing the first night he met her. He looked on as he saw her lean against the railing and stare off into the night. After a few moments she hung her head and shook with emotion. He watched on in helpless agony as she slid down the worn railings to sit in a dejected heap on the old supports. He found himself wanting to run to her and caught himself as he was half rising off the bench. When the gravity of the situation finally settled in his mind he sat down and shared her agony as he hung his head. The space between them felt like miles as they both sat and suffered alone, silently. He didn't know how he was ever going to make this right or if she would even give him the chance too but he knew now, like he had never known before that she was the only thing in his life that ever made it worth it and he just had to get her back no matter the cost. The minutes stretched on into an hour or so and his concentration on her form was broken when a cab pulled up in front of her building. When he saw Jeff get out he shot to his feet.
"Hey" he hollered at his shadowed form
He watched Jeff turn around cautiously and spot him standing in front of the bench. He noted the hesitation in his posture before he committed to jogging across the street to meet him. The expression on his face when he arrived was not friendly or the least bit welcoming.
"what in the hell do you think you are doing here" he spat angrily through the night
"Jeff listen, you don't understand" Jordan began
"Don't understand, what the hell is there to understand" Jeff said as he forced out the words in a harsh whispers
"There is a reason why things didn't happen the way they were supposed to tonight" Jordan said trying to calm him down
"All I understand is there is an amazing woman up there" and he gestured to her crumpled form on the small balcony "that had her heart shattered in to a million pieces tonight because you can't be man enough to even acknowledge her" he said with a poke in Jordan's chest challengingly
"Jeff, man come on, you know" Jordan began
"I know what?, I thought I did know something but I guess I don't, Jordan listen just don't come around anymore, she doesn't need this right now" Jeff said as he shook his head
"Hey man" Jordan said beginning to take the offensive
"No, look, if I ever see you near her or hear of you trying to contact her again, you will have me to deal with" Jeff said with a final poke of Jordan's chest before he jogged across the street and into the building.
Jordan looked on for a few minutes more to see Jeff walk out onto the balcony and help her up off her feet and back inside the apartment. He let out a frustrated sigh and began a slow walk back to his hotel.
