"Pink flowers and bows,
It's all you should know.
The summer days,
It's all that you are, beautiful child,
But they'll never know,
They'll never know."

"Kelly?" a voice asked, touching her arm briefly, taking her out of her daze.
"Oh hey," she smiled at the doctor before her. "Care this is Dr. Lopez. He's one of the doctor's working on Alex's case."
"Nice to meet you," Carrie smiled from beside her, shaking his hand politely.
"You too," he nodded before turning back to the Texan. "Do you have a moment?"
"Um, yea, we were headed to a meeting, but we can be a couple minutes late," Kelly replied.
"Well, it might take longer than that," he frowned. "How about we go in my office?"
"Um...ok?" she nodded nervously, feeling Carrie place a supportive hand on her back as they followed the doctor out of the game room and to his office.
"You may want to sit," the doctor said, closing the door behind them.
"I'll stand."
"Kell," Carrie urged.
"Alright," she sighed, sitting down.
Dr. Lopez eyed Carrie carefully, "I don't think you should--"
"She's fine," Kelly cut in. "Can you just tell me what's going on?"
He rubbed his eyes tiredly, placing his glasses on his desk, "She's not doing well...at all."
"B-but I thought the treatments were helping," Kelly said, her voice shaky.
"They were," he replied softly. "But her body's stopped responding. It just doesn't have enough left to fight back."
Kelly took a steadying breath, "But you said...you said she had months."
Dr. Lopez looked up at her sadly. He hated this so much, "At the very most, she has weeks."
"Oh God," Kelly breathed.
Carrie's mouth fell, "But she was fine. She was perfectly fine the other day."
"You just never know sometimes," he replied. He reached over the desk, placing a hand over Kelly's, seeing the tears swimming in her eyes. "We have done everything possible. I promise you Kelly. And you...you're an amazing person, ok? Don't for once think that there was something more you could've done because you did all you could."
Kelly nodded, sniffing back the tears.
"Is there anything I can do for you? Either of you?"
"She...um...I promised her...she wanted to go home with me," Kelly struggled. "I told her when she was feeling better, I'd take her for a trip."
"Kelly," he frowned softly. "You know better than to promise something like that."
"You should've known better than to promise months," she replied, icily.
He winced.
"Sorry," she immediately apologized. "I know this isn't your fault."
Dr. Lopez chewed on his bottom lip thoughtfully, "I'm not promising anything, but maybe, just maybe if we can get her stable enough. I'll allow it. But there will be a doctor there with you at all times. The best time for her will probably next week sometime, it just depends, and it may be on extremely short notice, and I know how busy you are, so..."
"Deal. Done. Anything," Kelly nodded.
"Alright. So, do you want to see her? She's been asking about you since yesterday."
"Of course," Kelly stood, wiping the tears away, Carrie right behind her as they followed him to her room.

"Kell, wait a sec," Carrie said, stopping her from opening the door to Alex's room after Dr. Lopez had left them alone.
"I'm fine," she replied robotically, knowing what the first thing out of the country singer's mouth would be.
Carrie sighed, bringing a hand up to wipe away a tear that had fallen down the Texan's cheek, "Sure you are."
Kelly frowned, opening the door. She felt a large lump rising in her throat at the sight of the small girl lying there in bed. She looked so much tinier than normal with all the tubes and wires attached to her. Kelly took a slow steadying breath before walking to the side of the bed. Carrie closed the door behind her, taking a few steps into the room, but giving the two of them some space.
"My girl," Kelly sighed, touching Alex's face softly as she pulled a chair up next to the bed to sit on. She held the child's small hand in her own, her eyes stinging, but she refused to give in to the tears.
"Kelly?" she heard the soft voice crack.
"H-hey munchkin," Kelly laughed gently. "How you feeling?"
"Tired," she frowned.
"I know," Kelly nodded, her jaw twitching as she sniffed. "But hey, listen to me, ok? You need to get some sleep. You need all the rest you can get, alright?"
"You just got here," Alex pouted, trying to sit up, but too weak to.
"I know, but you need plenty of rest so you can feel better. Remember how you said you wanted to come to my house?"
She nodded slowly.
"Well, the doctor's said you can. You just have to get stronger first, and for that to happen you need lots of sleep, alright?"
"You're going too, right?" Alex asked hopefully, looked past Kelly to Carrie.
"I don't know," Carrie frowned. "That's up to Kel--"
"Of course she's coming too," Kelly cut in. "Anything you want kiddo. You know that."
Alex smiled as her eyes closed tiredly.
Kelly stood up, kissing the child's forehead gently, "You get some sleep. Sweet dreams only, you got that?"
"You'll visit more?" Alex asked softly, trying her best to fight against her heavy eyelids.
"Every free second I got," Kelly vowed. "You'll see me so much that you'll get sick of me."
"Already am," Alex replied, making Kelly laugh.
"That's my girl," she smiled as the small girl fell into a heavy sleep. She wiped her eyes before turning back to Carrie.
"How bout I just bring you back home?" Carrie suggested, not feeling up for the meeting much herself.
"Yea," she replied. "Um...sounds good."
Carrie nodded, holding the door open for her.
"Care," Kelly paused as they exited the room.
"Yea?"
"You'll be able to come, right? I mean, I know I kinda just blurted it out that you'd come without even ask--"
"I can come," Carrie assured her.
"Good," Kelly nodded taking a shaky breath.
Carrie felt her heart tear at the look of complete loss in her eyes, "Kell...I know you said you're fine, but I'm not, and I know all things considering, this is a lot to ask, but I could really use a hug."
Kelly looked up at her, her eyes watering once more as she wrapped her arms around the country singer in a tight hug. Carrie felt her own tears forming at the feeling of Kelly's against her skin as the Texan buried her face in her neck.
"It's gonna be ok," Carrie soothed, rubbing her back, trying to comfort her as best as she could, despite knowing that those words meant absolutely nothing at the moment.
