"So how are you springing for this?" Carrie asked, playing a couple notes on the keyboard in Kelly's room as the short Texan changed from her work attire.
"Springing for what?"
"Being able to go out. You're still grounded, remember?"
"Yea, but Jason's here, and he's not here that often, and family comes first," she shrugged.
"Good enough reason for me," Carrie nodded, laughing softly as Kelly hopped on to her desk to sit so she could tie her shoes. "Are those new?"
"Yea, my mom got them for my birthday," she beamed, showing off her chucks.
"So, pretty good birthday so far?"
"Definitely. Guess what Jebbie got me."
"Y'all are talking again?"
"Yea, we're good."
"That's good," Carrie smiled. "What did she get you?"
"Studio time."
"Seriously?" Carrie's jaw dropped. "Kell, that's awesome. How pumped are you right now?"
"So pumped," she agreed.
"When is it?"
"Not for a little while, but still...freaking studio time."
"So cool," she nodded. "Oh, do I get to come watch you? Is that allowed?"
"Well, I sure hope so because I'd love for you to be there."
Carrie smiled.
Kelly held out her hands with a soft smile, and Carrie put the keyboard aside and walked over to her, taking her hands, "Thank you."
"For what?" she stepped to her as Kelly tugged on her hands.
"For making this birthday so great."
"I didn't really do anything," Carrie shrugged.
"Are you kidding? Care, you did everything. I mean, you went out of your way to make sure to celebrate my birthday even though I couldn't actually do anything because I'm grounded. I mean, you woke me up this morning by singing ''Happy Birthday" to me, and you baked me a cupcake, and you did the whole thing with my locker, and you remembered my favorite flower, and now you're going have dinner with me..."
Carrie smiled, "I just wanted you to have a good day."
"Well, you did a damn good job, then."
Carrie leaned closer, and Kelly gave a slight nod before she tilted her head to the side, allowing Carrie to kiss her gently.
Kelly smiled as she pulled back, "Thanks."
Carrie laughed softly, wrapping her arms around her neck, hugging her tightly, "I'm so glad you had a good birthday." She pulled back a little, cradling Kelly's face with one hand, her thumb grazing over her cheek. "And I'm so happy for you about the studio time. It's like...just the beginning, you know?"
Kelly nodded, leaning forward and brushing their lips together.
"You are so good at that," Carrie whispered.
Both girls looked up at the sound of the door opening.
"Oh..." Ashley eyed the pair of them closely. "Carrie, you're here. Hey."
"Yea, I picked Kelly up from work," Carrie nodded, her hands now resting on Kelly's knees.
"Glad you could make it."
"I wouldn't miss it," she smiled.
"Well, Jason was just asking me who's vehicle we were riding in, so you should probably go talk to him and get that figured out."
Carrie turned back to Kelly questioningly.
Kelly gave her a soft nod, smiling as she leaned to her, touching their cheeks together lightly.
"Happy birthday, baby," Carrie winked, giving her knees a gentle squeeze before turning to walk away.
Ashley frowned, watching her until she was completely out of the room.
"So what's up?" Kelly hopped off the desk.
"Nothing. Just been doing homework," Ashley shrugged. "I wasn't sure if Carrie was gonna be here or not. Jason asked me to make the reservation, so I only made it for three."
"That's fine," Kelly waved it off. "It's not like they'll only put three chairs at the table or something.."
Ashley sighed.
"Is something wrong?"
"No, it's just...she's staying here tonight?"
"Yea."
"I thought you said you didn't want anyone here."
"No, I said I wanted to wait to do something for my birthday until I wasn't grounded so everybody could be there. But since Jason's here, the rules have changed a bit. Plus, Carrie was probably gonna stay here anyway--she usually does on the weekends--so it's not like it's something special for my birthday," Kelly explained.
Ashley nodded, looking around the room.
"Are you sure nothing's wrong?"
"No, everything's...it's just..."
"Just what?"
"When someone calls someone else 'baby' the way Carrie just called you 'baby' it's no longer just a nickname, Kelly," Ashley pointed out, her voice thin.
There was a knock on the door, and Kelly smiled as her brother walked into the room.
"Y'all ready to go?" Jason asked. "Carrie said she'll drive."
"Yea, let's go," Kelly nodded, walking past Ashley and following her brother out of the bedroom.

Kelly smiled as Jason, Carrie, and Ashley all made a move to pull out her chair for her.
Carrie took a step back, motioning for Jason to do it.
Jason pulled out the chair before pulling out the one next to it for Carrie.
Carrie sat, watching as Jason hurried around to the opposite side of the table to hold out Ashley's chair before sitting himself.
"Having three dates is hard work," he joked.
"I don't know who you're trying to fool by being all gentlemany," Kelly teased.
"Hey now, I am the definition of a perfect gentleman."
"Since when?"
"Since I've decided it's time for me to grow up and become a man," he nodded.
"Ah, and what brought about this epiphany?"
"Love...something you are far too young to understand," he grinned.
"Oh whatever," Kelly laughed softly.
"I'm telling you: this girl is the one."
"She is?" Kelly raised her eyebrow. "More so than the last girl you said the exact same thing about."
"That...that was just puppy love," he waved her off.
"Sure..."
"Ok, ok, enough about me. Today's your day. Tell me what's been going on since the last time I saw you."
"Nothing much," Kelly shrugged.
"I heard you were in the school play."
"She was the lead," Carrie added.
"The lead?" Jason looked at his little sister impressed. "Did mom get video so I can watch?"
"Why? So you can tease me the entire time?"
"What do you expect? I'm you're big brother. It's my job, and since I don't get to see you a lot, I have to make the most of the time we do spend together."
"You're so full of shit."
"Now, what would Mom say about you talking like that?" he smiled.
"Nothing. Dad--Jimmy--on the other hand would have a fit."
Jason frowned.
Carrie looked between the two of them, noting the sudden increase of tension, "So, Jessica got Kelly studio time."
Jason looked at his little sister, his smile returning, "Oh yea?"
"Yea," Kelly nodded.
"That's awesome. I better get to hear the stuff you record."
"Definitely."
++++++++++
"So, Carrie," Jason said after thanking the waiter for bringing their food. "You're new here, right?"
"She's been here for a few months," Kelly replied.
"New to me," Jason corrected.
"Yea, I moved here from Oklahoma," Carrie nodded.
"Do you sing too?"
"Yea, a little."
"She's great," Kelly cut in. "And we're finally starting to get her out of her shell."
"A shy one in y'alls group?" Jason raised his eyebrow, looking at his little sister and Ashley. "Since when?"
"It wasn't my idea," Ashley muttered.
Carrie narrowed her eyes slightly.
"She's also on the softball team too," Kelly changed the subject. "And she's really good."
"Oh yea?"
Carrie shrugged, "Anybody with moderate talent would look good when they're placed on such a bad team."
"Very true," he nodded. "So why the move to good 'ole Texas here?"
"My dad's job," she replied simply.
"I saw him the other day," Ashley noted. "He's in a wheelchair, right? May I ask what happened?"
"That's kinda personal, Ash," Kelly replied.
Ashley frowned.
"She's right," Carrie nodded. "It's Kelly's birthday. This dinner should be about her, not me. So, birthday girl, how's your meal?"
"It's great," Kelly smiled. "This is a nice restaurant, Ash, thanks for picking it."
"I knew you'd like it," she glanced at Carrie.
Carrie resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

Jason frowned as Ashley got up from the table, heading towards the bathroom without saying a word, "What's up with her? She's been moody all night."
"Don't worry about it," Kelly sighed. "She's been like that a lot lately."
"Somebody should smack some sense into her," he teased. "I mean, it's y'alls senior year, right? It should be all fun and parties and hot guys, right?"
"Right," Kelly laughed softly. "Speaking of hot guys...tell me about this new love of yours."
"Cute, real cute," he smiled. "She's great, Kell...she really is. I think you're gonna really like her."
"I think you said that about the last girl, you dated. And we all know how that turned out..."
"You mean you getting chased by a moose?" he laughed. "Yea, I remember that. I don't think she took too kindly to you taking off on your bike, leaving her behind."
"Hey, when a moose is chasing you, it's every girl for herself."
"You got chased by a moose?" Carrie giggled.
"Long story," Kelly smiled. "Remind me to tell you later."
"I'll remind you to remind her," Jason nodded. "Because trust me, it's hilarious."
"Yea, yea...now, how about the girl?"
"Well, I hope you guys hit it off because she's gonna be your sister, after all."
Kelly's eyes widened, "What?"
"I proposed to her two weeks ago," he beamed.
"Aw, Jason..." Kelly smiled. "Really? That's great."
"I know," he nodded. "This is...this is it, you know?"
"Congratulations," Carrie smiled.
"Thanks," he laughed softly. "I was trying to figure out when to tell you, and then I remembered your birthday was coming up, so I decided it would the perfect time for me to come for a visit."
Carrie's brows furrowed as she turned to Kelly who's head was cocked slightly.
"You coming here was your idea?" Kelly questioned.
"Yea, of course," he nodded, accepting the bill from their waiter. "I told you, I wouldn't miss my little sister's eighteenth birthday. Why?"
"Well, it's just that...Ashley said it was her idea. She said she called you."
"No..." Jason shook his head. "I met up with her earlier today when I stopped to get a hamburger. The surprising you at school thing...that was all her idea."
Kelly nodded, frowning slightly.
"Maybe you just misunderstood," Jason offered.
"Yea..." she reached out, taking Carrie's arm as the taller blonde stood. "Where're you going?"
"To the bathroom."
Kelly couldn't help but smile at the anger in Carrie's eyes, "Wait until Ashley gets back?"
Carrie mumured something about that defeating the purpose, and Kelly laughed lightly.
"I need to go too, and it's totally not safe to leave Jason alone in a restaurant. He'll just keep ordering more and more food."
Carrie nodded, sitting back down.

Carrie shifted uncomfortably as she sat in the backseat with Ashley who had been completely silent since returning from the bathroom. She watched as Jason, whom she told could drive, tried to make small talk with his sister in the front. Kelly would respond every now and then, but she sat with her arms crossed, and her jaw set, a clear sign that she was upset which only made Carrie's anger rise at the girl sitting next to her.
Finally, Jason pulled the car up to the curb in front of the apartment complex. All four got out the car, silently.
"So, um, night, Ashley," he gave her a wave before making his way to their apartment.
"Bye," she replied, walking to her car.
"Bye Ash, thanks for coming," Kelly forced a smile.
"Drive safe," Carrie nodded, standing beside Kelly, her hand resting lightly on her back.
"Sleep well with your baby," Ashley smirked.
Kelly felt Carrie tense in next to her, and she put a hand on her stomach, keeping her there. "Good night, Ash," she said firmly.
Carrie allowed Kelly to turn her, guiding her away from the vehicles.
"I wouldn't stand so close too her, KC," Ashley warned.
"Oh yea?" Carrie turned back around to her. "And what is that supposed to mean?"
"I'm just saying..." she smiled. "I heard your mom has a problem with that sort of thing. You wouldn't want her getting wind at how close you two have become, would you? It would probably shatter that perfect little life of yours."
"You ignorant, jealous bitch," Carrie spat, moving towards her.
"Care, no," Kelly stepped in front of her, holding her back.
Ashley laughed.
"Keep on laughing," Carrie nodded. "Just remember that I'm the one sleeping in her bed tonight."
Ashley's laughter stopped immediately.
"Carrie, inside," Kelly demanded.
"Kell, come on," Carrie argued, turning to her.
"I told you, I'd handle it the next time she started, and I'm going to. So go."
Carrie cursed under her breath, turning and walking towards the apartment complex.
Ashley turned to unlock her car.
"Where the hell do you get off acting like that, Ashley?" Kelly asked heatedly, quickly closing the distance between them. "I mean seriously, what the fuck is your problem?"
Ashley rolled her eyes, "Whatever, Kelly."
"Don't whatever me," Kelly closed the car door she had opened, keeping her from getting inside. "You ruined my birthday, you know that? My brother comes down to surprise me and to take me out to a nice dinner, and you completely screwed that up for me. Tonight should've been so much fun. He told me he proposed to his girlfriend. We should've been celebrating, but you completely and utterly ruined it for me. Thank you so much, Ashley. It's really, exactly what a best friend should do."
"Best friend? Come on, Kelly, you can't honestly say I'm still your best friend."
"Not anymore," Kelly shook her head. "Not after tonight. You know, I was giving you another chance. All I asked for was a simple apology to Carrie, but you couldn't even get over yourself for five seconds to be able to do that. Instead, you continue to be just as big of a bitch to her as you were before. You haven't changed, so I don't even know why you bothered to start hanging out with me again, Ashley, because you know I don't stand for this drama bullshit."
"Kelly..." Ashley shook her head, her voice softening.
"Not to mention you lied to me--"
"I didn't lie to you."
"You said that you called and told Jason to come down here. You said that was my birthday gift, but you lied. He came down here himself for my birthday and to tell me he got engaged. He told me that."
Ashley's face fell, "Kell, I'm sorry."
"No, you're not," Kelly shook her head. "If you were sorry, you would've stopped this crap a long time ago. I can't believe you would stoop to doing something so low as lying to me about a stupid birthday gift just so you could one up Carrie. I mean, seriously, it's time to grow up, Ashley."
"Kell..."
"No," she put a hand up, stopping her. "No, just...I'm done...I'm done. Thanks, Ashley, for making this birthday one I will never forget."
+++++++++
Kelly let out a tense breath as she closed the apartment door behind her.
"So what was that all about?"
She looked up to find Jason stretched out on the couch, flipping through the television channels.
"Stupid high school stuff," she shook her head. "And quit changing the channels. There's only three...just like there's always been.
"Yea...guess I was just hopeful things had changed."
Kelly frowned, "Where's Mom and Dad?"
"Mom and Jimmy are sleeping. It's past ten," he pointed out.
"That's true. I worked kinda late today. Sorry about that."
"It's ok. Why don't you go get some sleep? You'll feel better in the morning."
Kelly nodded, walking through the living room and down the hall to her room. Carrie was already curled up on her bed in her pajamas, facing away from her. Kelly sighed, turning off the lights. She changed into a pair of pajama pants, tossing her shirt aside before she climbed over Carrie, taking her usual spot between her and the wall.
Carrie reached out, placing an arm around her. She froze at the feeling of her arm against the Texan's bare stomach. She slowly let herself relax, pulling Kelly back, closer to her. She kissed the top of her shoulder, "I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault," Kelly replied, her voice tense.
"I shouldn't have let her get to me."
"It's not your fault," she repeated.
Carrie kissed her shoulder again.
Kelly placed her hand over Carrie's, wrapping her arm more around her.
"I'm sorry your birthday got ruined."
"It wasn't completely ruined. It started off great. I haven't forgotten about that."
Carrie kissed her cheek softly.
"I just...I never thought Ashley could act like this. I don't get it."
"Love is a funny thing," Carrie shrugged. "Jealousy's even funnier. It makes people say and do things they would never do otherwise."
"She's jealous of you and I, huh? Of how close we are," Kelly turned onto her back to look up at her.
"Yea," Carrie nodded, her hand still on the other side of the shorter girl, causing her to hover over her.
"I never replaced her as my best friend," Kelly shook her head. "That would be impossible. Or at least, it would've been before now."
"Would've been?"
"It's too late now," her voice cracked softly.
"Oh, no, no, baby," Carrie placed her hand on her stomach, her thumb smoothing over the soft skin. "It's ok. Please don't cry."
Kelly sniffed, and she felt Carrie lean down.
Carrie pressed her lips against her forehead, lingering there.
"I just don't know what to do anymore," she cried softly.
"Shh..." Carrie whispered against her skin.
"What am I supposed to do?"
Carrie pulled back so she could look at her, "There's nothing you can do. It's Ashley that needs to change. You've been so patient about everything. She just needs to get over this...that's the only way this mess can be fixed."
Kelly sniffed again.
"And don't feel guilty about being upset with her. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: her liking you does not give her the right to act this way. It doesn't, Kell, and you were right to stand up for yourself."
Kelly shook her head, "I was standing up for you."
Carrie smiled, her hand still resting on Kelly's bare stomach.
Kelly raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"I, um...I'm not wearing a shirt, huh?"
"No," Carrie laughed softly. "I think you were too upset to think about it when you were getting ready for bed, and you just followed your normal routine. Do you want me to grab you a shirt?"
"No...it's ok...I'm just glad that for once I decided to wear a bra."
Carrie smiled, her hand slowly making it's way over her stomach. "Can I, uh, can I offer my opinion about something?"
"Of course," her voice was soft as goose bumps rose along her skin.
"I don't think Ashley is jealous of you and I in the best friend sense."
"What do you mean?"
"Why do you think I made a comment to her about sleeping in your bed tonight?"
"Because you knew it would make her mad?"
"Why?"
"Because she thinks there's something going on between us," she looked up at her.
"Yea," Carrie nodded.
"I don't understand why people have such a problem with other people being happy."
Carrie smiled, her hand moving from Kelly's stomach to her hand, linking their fingers together, "You know it's still your birthday."
"Yea."
"So, there's still time to save it and have it end on a happy note."
"True. What would you suggest?"
Carrie shrugged, bringing Kelly's hand up, placing it above her head. She let her fingers trail down the underside of her arm.
Kelly giggled lightly.
"You're ticklish," Carrie grinned.
"Extremely," Kelly nodded.
"You know, that's not something you should ever admit."
"I trust you," she replied, swallowing hard as Carrie's fingers grazed along her collar bones.
"You told me I need to stop thinking, but in order for me to do that, you have to promise me something."
"Ok?"
"Promise you'll tell me if you ever don't feel comfortable with something."
"I promise."
"Good," she smiled.
"Does that mean you're gonna kiss me now?"
"Do you want me to?"
"Yes."
Carrie leaned down, pressing their lips together softly. She smiled, feeling Kelly smiling against her lips. "You're so cute."
Kelly laughed lightly.
"Happy birthday," Carrie tilted her head, allowing her to kiss her more properly.
Kelly reached out, pulling Carrie completely on top of her.
Carrie grinned broadly as she broke the kiss.
"I was cold," Kelly shrugged.
"Sure..."
Kelly laughed, wrapping her arms around her, pulling her down into a hug.
Carrie flipped them over, letting Kelly lay on her. "How's your birthday looking now?"
"Definitely one I'll be happy to remember," she nodded, pushing herself up to kiss her gently before snuggling back into her, feeling Carrie's arms wrap around her securely.
