She thought of just drowning herself in the hot water as it scalded her face and shoulders. She had been right about everything from the beginning, she was nothing to him and tonight finally proved it. Her face felt tight from the swelling the torrent of tears that she had cried in the cab and up to her place had caused. She was so empty of everything that she felt hollow and lifeless. She had nothing else, no more tears, laughs, nothing, it was all gone and all used up. Her absolute worse fears were true. It all had been a joke to him. Everything they had was a small fleeting romance that he could scoff off easily. And she had played the star struck fan perfectly. She was such a damn idiot. It all felt a waste to her. Why had she believed for a moment that she could ever had been more than just a fan in the crowd. The one thing that she was completely lost on was why on earth Bubba and Jeff had kept on encouraging her. She had always thought that they knew the real him and knew what he wanted but they were fooled too. She knew after tonight Jeff’s encouragement was over, completely. Why had she agreed to go? What was she expecting to happen tonight? She knew in the back of her mind that she would regret going and had reminded herself of that many times but that naïve star struck fan in her actually expected him to start crooning to her on stage in front of God and everyone. She mentally smacked herself again. She had to be the worlds biggest fool. The water became icy at an alarming rate and she shut it off quickly. Her desire for a steamy drowning death drained away with the last of the now frigid water. When she drew back the shower curtain the steamy fog was so thick she could barely see the mirror across the room. She went over and opened the small window to let some escape into the breezy spring air. She wrapped herself in her robe and went out into the living room. She absently switched on the stereo and some classical piece floated out in a futile attempt to sooth her raging nerves. She crossed to her closet and pulled out her traditional PJ’s. She held up the shirt, his shirt, that she had always slept in. Why did she have to be so damn stupid? She knew that she should just get rid of it but something kept her hanging on. She pushed out the patio doors into the twinkling night and leaned on the battered railing. Her head was so filled with thought and emotion it suddenly became too much for her to hold and she had to rest it on her arms. Jeff’s advice seemed to echo in her head. Maybe this wasn’t worth fighting for, and at this point she didn’t know how she could fight anymore. The emotion welled again and she was powerless to stop it. He wouldn’t even look at her. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at someone he supposedly loved. She was overwhelmed by the tearless sobs that overcame her. She turned and slid down to sit against the rails. She sat with her head rested on her folded arms and let the memories overtake her. She began shaking when the memory of that first absolutely heart stopping smile he ever gave her as it flashed in her mind. Part of her still couldn’t believe that everything he had said to her was a joke. The one constant thought that had plagued her from the beginning surfaced again. What did he see in his wife that he couldn’t see in her? What made him want to stay with a women he despised rather than one he professed to need more than anything. She knew it really went back to the fear of him loosing everything he had built for himself in life. She thought of Michael and the amazing love they once had together and how it had slowly died away. Maybe that was the point maybe love just wasn’t strong enough to last for ever. The thought sent a new wave of grief through her and she cried tears that she hoped had forever dried up.
Jeff stepped out onto the balcony and stood looking down at her. Her still dripping wet hair was in loose curls covering her face as it rested on her arms. The strands swayed in the breeze. He looked down to the side walk and could see Jordan’s outline watching her. Anger swelled inside of him again as he thought of the needless torcher he had put her through all because he thought Jordan was going to do anything to win her back. He sighed and fought back his own tears when she finally looked up at him. Her face was red and puffy and her eyes looked like she had been in a boxing match.
“Oh god girlie” he whispered gently as he went over to her. He knelt down and rubbed the wet curls that were matted to her face out of the way.
“I have no idea what to do” she said pleadingly as he looked at her in desperation.
“We pick ourselves up and move on the best we can, sweetie” he said still trying to remove the hair from her cheeks.
“I don’t know if I can” she whispered back at him as her chest heaved again.
He gently helped her to her feet. As they went through the French doors he saw Jordan walking up the sidewalk with his head down.
“Coward” he muttered to the breeze
“Sorry” she said turning around to him
“Nothing” he said with a laugh
“What?” she asked to his inappropriate laugh
“well, you just sounded so British just then” he admitted laughing again
She smiled for the first time. “You must be on the piss” she laughed in her best attempt at a British accent.
“The Piss?” he asked with a weird look “I don’t think I really want to be on that”
She couldn’t help but laugh hysterically. She collapsed on the couch “I sure could use a dose of my girlies tonight” she said through the hand she was swiping at her face.
“Why don’t you talk to them” he said with a glance over at her computer
She laughed again “Well mainly because its about 4 in the morning over there” she said checking her watch “and I think I have given them enough to do today”
“How did you meet them” he asked as he sat down beside her. He was trying to keep her good mood going.
She sucked in a breath “Well to tell you the truth we really owe it all to Jordan” she said trying to fight back the tears “But its so much more than that now” she finished looking down at her hands.
“I want to here the whole story” he said taking her hands before she lost it again.
“Ok” she said looking over at her boxes “but I need my pictures”
He followed her gaze to the Jordan stuff boxes. He sighed. This was not going as he planned. “Don’t worry about the pictures we will get those later” he said with an absent gesture at the boxes.
“Ok, I guess I can do it with out those” she said and she began the story about how her and her friends met. She was deep into the conversation throwing her hands around and laughing when her cell phone rang. She jumped with a hand to her chest and walked over to it shaking.
“Just Joe,” she said in relief as she answered.
“Yes” she said curtly
“Look Kristy I know tonight was terrible but you have to” he began in a rush
“Joe, just stop” she said holding up a hand “I have just had the worse night of my life and I don’t want to rehash it again”
“Kristy” he pleaded “please you have to understand”
“I understand perfectly well what went on tonight and I just need to get over it” she said pacing around with a hand on her hip.
“Kristy, look there is a perfectly good” he tried to start again
“will you please just stop” she said raising her voice “I can’t deal with this right now so please just leave me alone” she finished in frustration as the tears began again.
“Ok look, maybe it is a little soon to go over this but you need to know what really happened” he said with defeat in his voice “Just call me tomorrow”
“I don’t think so” she said sobbing now “I really just need to move on with my life
“Kristy please call me tomorrow, I need to talk to you” he almost whined
“Ok, Ok, just stop the whining please” she said frustrated “where will you be”
“We leave for LA in the morning so I probably won’t be available until about 2 your time but please call me” he said with urgency
“I will” she huffed
“It will be ok” he added
“Yeah it will because I am going to make it ok” she added before she closed the phone. She pressed the power button and threw it in her chair. “No more of that please” she said as she went back over to the couch.
“You ok” Jeff asked as she flopped down
“No” she said as her face broke
“Kristy” he said lightly as he smoothed her still wet hair
“Jeff, I really loved him” she sobbed as she fell into his lap “and I guess I really thought that we would make it back together” she admitted as her tears streamed into his pants.
“Kristy, you will be ok, I promise” he said as he leaned over to kiss her cheek lightly.
“Jeff don’t leave me” she pleaded
“I wasn’t going to” he said as he pulled her into his arms and squeezed her as she sobbed.
After about an hour she had exhausted herself into sleep. She stirred lightly as he got up to carry her to the bed. He gently laid her down as she groaned and turned over. He felt his heart break. She was beautiful and one of the most genuine people he had ever met in his life and it was killing him to see her go through this. He smoothed her hair down again and a thought occurred to him. Usually he would get mixed up with women like this. Desperate and emotional. For the first time he didn’t feel any romantic urges to her what so ever but the love he had for her swelled in his chest. He had to make this up to her. He couldn’t believe he put her through this. He got up from the bed and walked over to the computer to leave her a note. Two days it said in big letters and he grinned as he stuck it to her monitor.
